Cell phone companies revive The Cram

RIP-OFF ALERT: There's something brewing right now that Clark considers akin to a national scandal. The cell phone companies are in cahoots with rip-off artists and they're stealing your money.

Here's the background: Do you recall back in the landline days when people were falling victim to "The Cram"? Phone companies would bill them for fake charges attributed to a "marketing" company.

These bogus fees would pop up on a page of unregulated charges on a monthly bill. The phone companies would get a cut of the action when they teamed up with these 3rd party aggregators who initiated the charges. Many people would pay year after year without question because they were so confused by their bills!

Now this same garbage is popping up with cell phones. The cell carriers are doing courtesy billing for 3rd party crooks that push a variety of messaging services. And, of course, they're getting a cut of the money once again.

People are getting burned in 2 ways, actually, because cell companies are also raising the cost of text messaging. This is a virtually free transaction for them, yet they're raising rates to as high as 20 cents/text message.

People are being billed for messaging services they never signed up for. For example, Clark is getting spam text messages ads. The cell carriers love this -- especially if you're not on an unlimited texting plan -- because every spam message is more money for them.

If the history of "The Cram" is any indication, the FCC probably won't get involved for several more years. So you must take the responsibility of reviewing your cellular statement page by page every month. Many people just get their bill charged to their credit card every month and never see a statement. Don't be one of them! Get a paper statement and scrutinize it. This is war. They think they can get away with stealing your money, but they can only do so if you allow it!

the FCC is such a ridiculous organization
  • JP said, "I know a customer is lying..." Yeah right and I suppose you figure it out by looking into your crystal ball. It is that precise condescending attitude which infuriates customers. Now the fact is that I OWN my cell phone. I PAY for a service. Cell companies are under the seriously mistaken impression that they are the ones who can make the rules. Customers are paying for a service, a service which is not being provided in an appropriate manner. When are people not only going to stand up to reps such as JP, but to entire corporations? It is time to be heard. Write your government representatives, call your cell phone company to register an official complaint against their policies, report abuses of cellular companies to the BBB, the FCC and the FTC. Make your voice heard!
  • Cell Phone Charges
My cell phone service is with Consumer Cellular. They don't make you sign a contract and they email an easy-to-read, detailed bill. However I've noticed 10 tax and surcharge charges ranging from 2 cents to $1.88. Is it possible that some of these are bogus? If so, how can you tell which ones are the frauds?

Your show is consistently wonderful - I really learn a lot and enjoy every one I hear. I appreciate your demeanor and attitude on the show which is always helpful and never demeaning. I have recommended your site and show to everyone I can get to listen.
On one of your shows, you asked about teens and driving. With my kids (I have 6 - all grown and on their own) they had to demonstrate responsibility to get a license - with their school work, and with saving $ for car and insurance. They also were not allowed to ride with any of their friends who had not purchased their own car and insurance. It worked well for us, and I was willing to drive, if necessary.
I have tried to call in to the show several times, and even with speed dial, the line has stayed busy.
I'm not looking for a response, however, if you keep records, my email is Julie.Kelly@co.nevada.ca.us
    Thanks for your good work.
    Julie
  • I am a recent victim of "The Cram"
I was recently victimized by Embarq (Naples,FL) in cohort with a company called ILD. However, I was re-imbursed after strongly detesting the charges. This is very widespread and mostpeople are not aware.
  • u.s. cellular
at u.s. cellular, a) all incoming text messages are free. b) you have the ability to request that all text messages be blocked, if it takes that much time out of your life to delete a message from your phone, or to simply ignore it.
  • tmobile doesn't let you block them
They are being sued and Clark howard is right, this is WRONG
  • T mobile will not block text messages!
JP, T mobile will not block messages nor take charges off. If you get spam they will put free messages on so that you don't have to pay for the next batch of them. I have spoken to 3 or for reps about these issues and know that they do not refund or block them, so you are out of the money if it happens to you!
  • Once again, Clark is misleading!
Clark is so blinded by his hatred for the cell phone industry that it impossible for him to be objective! We can indeed block all text messaging and my company (AT&T) will automatically credit back any unauthorized fees virtually on the word of the customer. There are many times when, as a customer service supervisor, I know a customer is lying when they say "I never authorized this!" There are several levels of approval that the customer has to actively accept for this billing to take place, but we still credit them. Clark, try to let go of that one customer service rep that made you so mad and try to be unbiased for a change!
  • Blocking text
I am a verion customer and yes they CAN block text message all together if you don't want it at all. So if you don't have it on your plan and your getting charges just blck it.
  • cramming
need legislators to make this illegal - that is the only time they will stop doing this.
  • spam text mssages
Verizon and Cingular both have security code sitting for messages like Charkhoward does to post a messages here. This slows up the spam thanks goodness.
  • Scrutinize... then what?
So I scrutinize the statement and find text charges even though tex messaging is not in my plan. So what do I do? T-Mobile's customer no service says "sorry we can't help you." So I pay. Clark, now what? We can't wait 2 years !!!!
  • Spam text messages
I called Verizon to complain about spam text messages. Because I have no text plan, each one was costing me 20 cents. They had no way for me to turn off text messages or limit them only to messages sent by someone already in my address book, but they did have one suggestion that did really help. Verizon has a site that can be used specifically for sending text messages from the internet to cell phone users. If you log in using your existing online account name/password (or create one if you've never created an online user name/password with them) and then change your preferences to not accept any text messages sent from the internet, that will block anyone that's spamming with the equivalent of email text messaging.

So far it's kept me from receiving any new unwanted text messages--I hope this continues to be the case! This tip should be better publicized by Verizon, though they're making money off of those who don't know about it yet, so I'm not holding out a lot of hope there.

  • cram it
so what do I do when I get crammed? We have a two year contract, (suck right?) and have no leverage
