Tiffany's and eBay continue court battle over bogus goods

Are designer accessories and clothing for sale on eBay the real deal? Most of the time they're not. Tiffany's has been fighting eBay for about 5 years over this matter. The jewelry retailer says its reputation gets trashed whenever people buy bogus Tiffany's merchandise from eBay. But so far eBay has been reluctant to take responsibility for the impostor goods being sold through its site. Clark and his executive producer Christa have been fighting about this point forever. She says it's a case of buyer beware, while he thinks eBay has serious responsibility to intervene here because they get a cut of every transaction. In fact, eBay used to advertise on its website saying that they have Tiffany's wares for sale. The case is now in court and a judge will rule on the matter.

Clark uses eBay about 15 or 20 times a year to pick up electronics and cell phone accessories on the cheap. One of his recent purchases was a cell phone charger for $5, which included shipping. He quickly contacted the seller when it turned out the merchandise didn't work for him. When he didn't get a response, he got online and gave the seller a bad rating for not following through on the transaction. Clark knows that he's getting aftermarket goods -- usually made in China -- when he buys on eBay. But potential buyers of designer goods need to know that they may be getting a fake online.

Invasion of the PODs

There's a new recipient of the old "car on blocks" award. You know the saying, "Stay away from neighborhoods that have cars on blocks," right? Portable on-demand storage (PODs) units are getting that kind of stigma now. Instead of you going to storage, you bring the storage to your front yard with a pod. Leaving one on your property for too long is a sure way to drive your neighbors crazy. The Washington Post reports that there's now a big backlash over the prevalence of PODs. You'll see them invading neighborhoods of all price points, in addition to construction sites. And these things aren't cheap, either; they can cost nearly $400/month to rent! So townships are getting ordinances passed to restrict or to require permits to have PODs on your property. The original concept with PODs was that you loaded them up and moved to another place or had them stored elsewhere. It's a more recent phenomenon that they've become at-home storage units! Clark's wife would kill him if he got a POD at their house.

Tattoos for cash?!

What do you do if you're 23 years old and looking for a new source of income? Try finding someone who's willing to pay you to get tattooed, of course! That's the latest idea cooked up by Joel, Clark's young associate producer. Joel currently is inkless; if he remains that way, he'll be one of only 60 percent of people between the ages of 25 and 40 who isn't tattooed. Even traditional holdouts like educated college women are now giving in to the tattoo trend. Clark's 18 year old daughter is now of age and he tells her she's free to get as many tattoos as she wants . . . if she wants him to stop paying for her college!

Joel has discovered a website that he's seriously considering using called LeaseYourBody.com. Here's how it works: You decide on a certain dollar amount that you'll accept for a temporary tattoo and post it to your profile on the site. Then advertisers log on and select the candidates they like. You get to pick the part of your body you're willing to cover. (Forehead tattoo, anyone?) There was one instance of Goodyear offering a free set of tires to anyone who got a permanent tattoo! With that in mind, we're dying to know: Are there any listeners out there who would be down with some Clark Howard ink??

Bill Me Later a win/win for online shoppers and merchants

Do you often shop online? If so, you may see an option when you're checking out called Bill Me Later. This Baltimore-based company allows you to shop online without divulging your credit card information to every vendor. It's fast becoming the friend of merchants and customers alike, while Visa, MasterCard and the other traditional cartels grow to despise it. With Bill Me Later, you simply enter the last four digits of your Social Security number and you either get instant approval or you're denied. This is a more secure method to shop online. The other advantage is that Bill Me Later sometimes offers extended payment times at no interest. In addition, this is a money saver for businesses too. Merchants pay a lower fee per transaction than they would to process a normal credit card transaction. So Bill Me Later is a win/win situation for both consumers and businesses.
