Excerpts From Clark's Shows: Discount Eyewear

Oct 12, 2009 -- Zenni Optical spawns competitors

Clark is into wearing cheap prescription glasses that don't skimp on style, as you may know if you've ever seen him on TV.

Many years ago, a listener shared a tip about ZenniOptical.com, which offers prescription glasses at $8 ($12 with shipping) for complete frames and lenses.

Clark's progressive lenses with some additional add-ons cost him a whole $37 -- nothing compared to what it might have cost in the past.

Yet Zenni has created so many Clark Stinks postings. One of the chief gripes is that Zenni doesn't offer any customer service after the sale. Even more vocal criticism came from people who are in the eyeglasses business themselves. But Clark had his Zennis vetted by a professional and the optometrist could find no fault with them!

In reality, Zenni has been an industry changer. Now you have competitors like EyeBuyDirect.com and GlassesUnlimited.com offer prescription glasses at similar price points. It's a wide open field.

Jul 27, 2009 -- Time-release contact lenses to help glaucoma patients

New changes in medicine promise to help millions stick to treatment regimens more efficiently thanks to improved delivery systems.

For example, Wired Science reports that a new breed of contact lens is being developed that can time-release medication directly to your eye.

This breakthrough is expected to help glaucoma patients, who routinely skip their eye drops almost 60% of the time -- even though doing so can lead to blindness.

When it comes to skipping medication, Clark himself confesses to never having completed a 10-day cycle of antibiotics in all of the 15 or so times they have been prescribed to him. The reason? He's just too flaky to remember.

Interestingly, the contact lens solution wouldn't be one that would help Clark either. His blink reflex is too strong to allow his eye to hold a contact lens, as he discovered early in his TV days when a news director wanted to get him out of glasses on-camera but couldn't!

Oct 15, 2008 -- Zenni Optical causes Clark marital strife?!

Clark's love of Zenni Optical -- the ultra-cheap online retailer of glasses -- recently caused a little marital discord between the penny-pincher and his wife.

When the couple's 9-year-old daughter Stephanie needed glasses, his wife Lane wanted to go to Costco. Clark nearly had a coronary as he looked at the frames Stephi liked -- they were $80! He quickly suggested Zenni, prompting Lane to blow her top and tell him not to be so cheap. (Editor's note: That's the clean version of her diatribe!)

So they reached a compromise: Stephi got the Costco frames, but also got a spare pair from Zenni for $19. It turns out that she likes the Zenni frames better than the Costco ones!

Listeners, however, haven't always embraced Zenni. The company grinds their glasses in communist China, starting at $8/pair with shipping costs of $4.95. Some listeners have been particularly upset that there's been no service after the sale. Zenni is all about the price -- not the customer service.

Nov 09, 2007 -- Clark's shaving, eyeglasses cheapness rankles some

Clark's cheapness has set off a couple of recent firestorms. Syndicated financial writer Greg Karp recently wrote about Clark's use of a single 17-cent razor for a year. Last March, Clark graduated to his second razor. But spending 34 cents on blades for two years is pretty good, don't you think? Yet many people have expressed that they think this is cheapness without a purpose because his razors are so cheap to begin with. In a way, Clark agrees -- but he'd definitely be saving a lot over time if his blade of choice was an expensive one. Other people are upset with Clark over the Zenni Optical issue. For those of you who don't know, Zenni provides deeply discounted prescription eyeglasses starting at $8. Clark himself wears progressive lenses from Zenni that cost him $41. But some people wonder how they can be any good if they're so cheap. Clark's friend Jim Strickland, an investigative reporter for WSB-TV, recently did a story about eyeglasses where he compared Zennis and a number other more expensive brands. The Zennis had perfect prescriptions versus the glasses that were filled at well-known optometry chain stores. The message here is that buying cheap glasses does not automatically mean you'll get bad quality. Consumer Reports recently revealed the three best places to have your eyeglasses prescription filled: At an independent practice where the optometrist has his or her own dispensing operation; at a Costco location; and at the For Eyes Optical discount chain.

Jun 27, 2007 -- Zenni Optical still doing it

ZenniOptical.com is still giving amazing deals on prescription eyeglasses to the public. $8 is all it costs for basic prescription glasses. Clark has ordered a pair and so have others on the staff and the customer service and the products have been fantastic. Clark finally got his in and he has not had any problems with them. So if you want some cheap prescription eyeglasses that don't feel cheap, check out Zenni!
