Mar 02, 2010 -- Coupon use rises for the first time since 1992

For the first time in 17 years, the number of coupons redeemed in the United States has seen an uptick. This is big news considering that couponing last reached a peak in 1992 and had declined every year since. But now, out of economic necessity, we're again returning to couponing.

A recent analysis Clark saw by a financial writer revealed that coupon users get a return on their time that's roughly equal to about $100/hour tax free. Who out there wouldn't like a $100/hour tax-free job? Of course, couponing is not 40 hours a week. But the message here is that avid couponers can save substantial money.

If you like the sound of that return on investment, the simplest tip Clark can give you is buy three copies of your Sunday newspaper every week. There are big savings to be had in all those glossy coupon inserts.

In Clark's TV work, he interviewed Coupon Mom and she shared a tip that he'd never thought about. Very often, a manufacturer's coupon will show a picture of an expensive item, but the coupon will also apply to cheaper items of the same brand. That coupon could wind up getting you something for free!

So get organized -- you'll need to be patient and have a tolerance for tedium -- and just keep remembering $100/hour back to you and the IRS doesn't get any of it!!

  • Printable Coupons
    Hi,
I just tried using my first printable
coupons at Walmart and they will NOT accept them. The printable coupons won't run thru their scanner.
  • Qpon User for Life
I have been qponing now for six months and have managed to save over 60% of my total grocery bill. I use a new site called qponqutie.com that focuses on Atlanta and have been very pleased. Keep up the good work qpon people.
  • Using Multiple Q's
You most certainly CAN use multiple Q's-I do it every single week at both Publix and Kroger here in Atlanta. Someone doensn't quite know how the game is played LOL!
  • Q-pon Wisdom
You really can make a killing in the qpon game. We do every dingle week here in the Atlanta area. I have such a great stockpile at home from all the free merchadise, my OOP for weekly groceries/health & beauty/cleaning supplies has dramatically gone down! We have SO much stuff we've gotten free, I had to set aside one of our spare bedrooms to house it all. I never pay for tpaste/brushes/floss, make-up, deodorant, shampoos/conditioner, skin creams. lip balms, beauty tools, snacks, etc. THe list goes on and on! Just this week as an example, I got 20 bottles Gillette Mens Body Wash FREE, except for tax, FREE GE litebulbs. ANd it only took a quick 10 min. in the store. You can get organized where you go in and out local stores, doing your deals in no time flat and bringing home incredible bargains!
It's like a whole different world out there-once you become Q-savvy. Visit couponmom, southern savers and its hip to save-to name a few and get started! Pardon me now, while I meet my DH for dinner-his meal is FREE tonight, of course!
  • 'Don't get arrested for fraud'
If the coupon is a great deal then just have two separate purchases. I held back a couple item in my cart for a 'separate purchase'. Best investment ever... GROCERYGAME.COM
  • Don't Get Arrested for Fraud
Trying to use 3 of the same coupons from 3 Sunday newspapers will backfire at the supermarket checkout if you have a cashier who reads the legal fine print on the coupon and obeys the law... frequently "One Coupon Per Purchase". Or "One Coupon Per Customer".

  • Coupons at Kroger
On their website you can sign up for electronic coupons. I get good deals at Kroger's with their coupons and the manufacturers PLUS the electronic coupons! It is so cool to see you get the name brand for practically free or very cheap! They also have coupons for their brand. So does Food Lion and Ingles. I work full time so I don't have alot of time but do spend some time in checking out all the grocery stores' websites and coupon.com, upromise, etc. that you'll find on couponmom.com. She has Kroger and Publix on there that will show you what's on sale plus if there is a coupon for that sale item. Now she will show you how you can buy $100 worth of groceries for $25.00. That's because she is buying only those products on sale and with the store card and coupons. Yes you can save lots of money. However, most of us buy other things. I don't give my card over until everything has been rung up and watch the savings subtract from the total and THEN hand over my coupons. WOW! That doesn't happen every week but often enough that it is worth it. There are times when I don't have alot or don't need the sale items at Kroger, Ingles, etc. so I just head to Walmart. Or just get burnt out on the coupon thing for a week! Walmart doesn't double but sometimes I just need a few items and hit them for shampoos, etc. I really like Publix because they don't use a store card and you can get good deals with your coupons. I only buy their BOGO products because they are pricey AND you don't have to buy both prodcuts to get the BOGO. Same for the other stores. My Publix takes all competitors' coupons. That's cool! I have been doing coupons for nearly 30 years and use to get stares and glares from people behind me! Now not so much since many people are doing couponing! Love it! P.S. I wonder how people can afford not to use coupons and not have a grocery list? My husband wouldn't if he had to do the grocery shopping so good for you Robert!
  • Retailers fighting back
I have noticed many places from Walmart to smaller chain grocery stores are limiting coupon use at checkout now. They are starting to adhere to the "limit one per customer" rule which is seen on most coupons so the buying three Sunday papers idea is out the door. Some of the smaller ones are limiting coupon use "per checkout," one chain there is a limit of 10 per checkout, another is 16. I guess the moment the masses figure out how to save some dough the businesses are there to squash it. Walmart has no limit, but in my town one cannot use more than one of the same coupon per checkout, so I average $35 savings on a $150 checkout. Plus, not all Sunday city papers have a giant glossy section of coupons, but it's great advice if your town does.
  • Restaurants
If you like to eat out using sites like Groupon.com are a must.
  • Some coupons still worthless...
I've always used coupons but over the last 2 years I seem to get the ones that give you $.50 if you buy 3 full size cartons of orange juice. Who the heck buys 3 at a time? I dont belong to Costco because the family is small and the "buy 4, get one free" coupons are worthless to me. The good ones are fewer and far between. And dont get me started on the P&G coupons...I just toss them automatically, they have so little value to me...cheapos. I do find that the quality of store brand stuff is now as good as (most) brand name items and they offer "real" coupons.
  • Couponing
as a landscaper, my business is slow in the winter. I didn' take a seasonal job this winter and decided to find ways to budget and save. This led me to couponing. My wife has never been interested in this and after suggesting it several times I decided to take over the grocery shopping. I save on average 40-80 percent on my groceries and we went from having bare pantries to having them overflowing in a short period of time.
  • Coupons for Food
Seems most coupons are for food. Americans are fat. Go figure.
  • Coupons
I have used coupons for years and usually never pay for shampoo ,deodorant or razors. You can almost always get them for free at a store that doubles coupons when you purchase them on sale. I get alot of this free. Kroger is good for coupons and so is Publix. I shop at Kroger and get there coupons mailed to every month or so. Alot of free items in there as well. There are online sites that will help you with when items are on sell and what coupons to use. Love coupons!!!!!
  • Coupons
John- I dont know if you shop at Kroger-but if you get one of their shopper cards(not a credit card) they track items you purchase frequently and will send you a store coupon for that item. Name brands and store brands included.
  • Coupons
Amazing information. I have started to use coupons, but in the past thought of them as a waste of time. I will certainly be looking for more coupons to use
