Feb 01, 2010 -- Major retailers using rip-off tactic during online checkout

RIP-OFF ALERT: We've gotten several calls from listeners complaining about being ripped off while checking out at many otherwise legitimate Internet selling sites.

Typically, our callers report seeing a message during checkout asking if they'd like to save X amount of dollars on their purchase. Clicking through on the message and agreeing secretly enrolls you in a subscription service that is billed to your credit card or debit account on a monthly basis. And there's no real notification -- other than some mice-type that's too small to read.

The Wall Street Journal reports New York Attorney General Andrew M. Cuomo suspects 22 companies of being involved with this rip-off. Among the companies he's subpoenaed are Staples, Barnes &Noble, Avon, GameStop, 1-800-Flowers and Orbitz, just to name a few.

No need, however, to wait and hear their side of the story. You know all you need: That supposed instant discount will cost you big-time. Cuomo alleges that three of these discount programs pulled in more than $1 billion annually.

The real question is how will trusted brands that take advantage of this suspect sales ploy gain their reputations back with customers??

Unfortunately, Clark won't be able to answer any questions submitted via commenting. If you have a question, please try posting it to our message boards.

What others are saying

  • Discover's ShopDiscover program is a ripoff!!!
I have continuous problems getting my extra cashback bonus through Discover's ShopDiscover program. I believe that they think people won't notice that they didn't receive the extra cashback bonus. Check your statement thoroughly and complain. I ordered from 1800CONTACTS through the ShopDiscover program which advertised a 10% extra cashback bonus. I'm still fighting with Discover. When I send a secure message through their site, I just get a canned or form response. BEWARE!
  • Pro Flower rip off scam
I went on Pro Flowers website and looked at ordering flowers, changed my mind. Now for the past 4 months a company called Easy Saver Rewards has been billing my credit card 14.95 a month. Just because I looked at Pro Flowers Website and their "coupon". DO NOT USE PRO FLOWERS it is a scam!!! I am now fighting to get my money back from the Easy Saver Rewards Company. Have filed complaint with VISA, and the BBB.
  • Great Fun Rip off
Found another unauthorized charge on my Amex card from Great Fun $39. Called Great Fun up. Was told I agreed to a membership at the time I bought a ticket on AirTran Airways site. I never applied for and have no interest in this type of membership. Don t even understand how it happened. Had to fight for and was promised a total refund. Did not get refund. Contacted Amex who stopped payment and obtained a credit from Great Fun
  • AEPC Member services
Found a $79 charge for "AEPC Member Services" on American Express statement Never authorized this Trying to figure out how I got charged
  • check-out rip off
Add "Chadwicks.com" to that list, and I hate to admit that over the last 2 yr, it has happened to me in 2 slightly differnt ways-once an offer of discount and once an offer of $20.00 off current purchase. Tried to cancel, because as soon as it got my info, site went down. Chadwicks said was just ad on their site and not their problem. Luckily, each time, found the number, called, and was told after mentioning need to report to atty.gen. that I was never registered or charged. Oddly enough, they could not explain how they had all my info. I was never charged, but it starts with an offer to 'take this survey and save $20.00', at least the final one. Chadwick's lack of concern infuriated me. Had I not written the co.'s phone # down first thing, I would not have been able to stop this. They operate under a diffent name than the offer, also.
  • massage envy alert!!!!
Massage envy is nothing but a rip-off. Do not sign up with them. My husband was not happy with their massage, now we are stuck paying $60/month for the worst customer service and the worst attitude! The massage envy even threatened to report us to the credit bureau if we dont pay. Horrible service! Be careful!
If you are not happy with the service you should be able to cancel that session! Please stand up for what's right and dont let them rip you off too.
  • 30 Sec. Rip-off during online checkout
This happened to me with VitaCost.com. After giving my credit card info and ready to sign-off, there was that last-minute offer to a discounted charge if I filled out their "evaluation form".
Filling it out triggered an actual 30-second only flash-up saying "thanks for enrolling in our membership plan...
you will be billed $19 monthly. WHEW!!
Tried to go back and cancel order -- but
no cancellation button!! Tried to erase
my card # and address but when I called
    my credit card company (immediately)--
it had ALREADY been charged !!! Took
many letters and much explaining before
my credit card CO did actually remove it. WATCH OUT FOR "VITACOST.COM".
  • ShopDiscover is a Farce
I was always tempted by the ad to save an additional 5-20% off my purchases if I went through the Discover site to the desired retailer's site to purchase. Sounds too good to be true, it is!!! I found out the hard way. I made a computer purchase at the Hp.com store and was never given my cashback bonus of about $60. Discover claims that the reason is because I purchased monitor and CPU together and thus HP gave me an instant rebate. They claim this would be a double discount - except that the rebate is from HP and the Cashback Bonus (if they were true to their word) would be from Discover. For anyone and everyone else tricked like this, don't just let it pass. Complain about it, post comments here and elsewhere on the web, and most importantly cancel your Discover card. I could have gotten better points discount from my other cards. Discover is just a sham!
  • Save $10 On Your Next Order
I remember getting ripped off in a similar way maybe two years ago or so. I had already checked out from the online store I was buying from, though I wish I could remember who it was; I am always leery of scams, but this one just made it seem as if I would save $10 on my next purchase at this store because I was a new customer. There were no "terms" listed anywhere. I've had many online stores offer me discounts on my next purhcase, though usually through an email from them, but since this one mentioned nothing about it, I just clicked the button, figuring the store would send me an email with my discount. I wasn't getting an email from the store, but I did get some emails from some company I can't remember thanking me for signing up for membership. I then saw on my bank account online, that I was being charged, I think it was like $11 per month! I did call this place right away, as well as emailed them and also reported it to my bank. The charge was taken off my account, and this membership company actually did cancel the subscription I unwillingly and unknowingly subscribed to by clicking that seemingly harmless button.
  • Hearst Magazines
Accidently getting subscriptions when entering contests has happened to me, but there is an easy remedy if you act when you first get the subscription notice or dialoge box. Go to your account at thet particular magazine site. Sign in and then click on the left side listing for unsubscribing. Follow the directiond and dialoge boxes. It is very simple.
  • Purchasing Online
I only use one-time credit card numbers when I purchase things online. This eliminates the possibility that that number can used again for some subscription I didn't sign-up for, and it protects me in case the vendor's system gets hacked and my account information is compromised.
Both Discover and Visa have this feature. I don't know about MC.
  • ProFlowers
I too got in on the ProFlowers scam. I ordered flowers for my Mother-in-law and unwittingly clicked on the "SAVINGS" offer and then forgot about it. At the time I was sick myself and did not look at my statements except to pay them for about 4 months. I will say that when I called the 800 number listed with the charge on my cc invoice the person refunded the entire 4 months worth. Pro-flowers lost my business forever for allowing such on their site.
  • Discover Card
Companies that supposedly offer you "extra" cashback are liars as well. Shopdiscover.com said I would get an additional 5% cashback bonus if I ordered through their website. When I didn't get the additional cashback, all Discover card will do is direct me to the retailers website to try to discover why I didn't meet the "terms and conditions." I have been a discover card holder since 1986 and no one will help me at customer service. Excuse me, customer NO service, is correct Clarke.
  • Solutions magazine
Got me twice - and I consider myself fairly cautious about what I agree to online. Showed up as a $15/mo charge to join some kind of "savings club" - for stuff I have no use for.
  • Rip off beddingstyle.com
P.S. I have reported them to BBB and Consumer Affairs. There is no customer service. If you have had issues with them their contact information follows:
    Revman International, Inc
    2901 North Blackstock Road
    Spartanburg, SC 29301
    Business ID: 0673-0011002888
    (864) 573-2500
    www.revman.com
  • beddingstyle.com
I placed an order, no.67038, at www.beddingstyle.com. I attempted to use my bank card and received an error message “card not authorized contact your bank” so I used my American Express Sunday, February 7th. I now have three charges on my Capital One bank account. I canceled my order on 2/10 and my AmEx was charged on 2/12. After reading the blogs this has happened to other customers also. Warn your listeners.
  • It happened to my wife twice
This has happened to my wife and I twice in the past two years. My wife orders Christmas gifts thru catalogs, somehow she got signed up for a buyers club. I caught it months later. In both instances I was refunded all of my money immediately. They knew it was a scam.
  • Glad
Realized I forgot to say what I'm glad about. I'm glad this is getting some attention and people are wising up to the game.
  • Surprised but glad
I'm surprised in reading these posts that so many people are caught off guard by these chintzy deals during the check out process. Remember everybody, you never get something for nothing, or, if you prefer, if it seems too good to be true, it probably is. Getting 20% off or $30 off of your order will never be as easy as checking a box during check out. There's always a catch. I've made regular online purchases for over ten years and the process of checking and unchecking boxes to make sure you get what you want, and only what you want, is nothing new. Also remember that if you update something, say change the quantity in your cart or update a phone number in your account, these boxes will often recheck themselves when the page reloads. Always double check everything before you hit that "submit" button.

In the end, it's really no different than buying things at a store. Just yesterday I purchased a digital frame and the item rang up for $20 more than the price on the shelf. Had I not been paying attention it would've been very easy to pay that extra $20. (It would have been nice to get an apology from the cashier instead of the sassy "are you sure it was for the 7" one" that I got though.)

Thanks Clark, it seems this indeed did need a little more attention. The practice is certainly sleazy, lets help make sure they don't earn an extra penny on it!
  • Waste More of your Time
Why do you waste your time complaining here - it will get you nothing! Complain to the Attorney General in the state where these louts are located. All Clark does is talk. My advice is to shop online only with American Express. If there is a problem AE is on your side. MC and Visa treat you like a thief when you complain.
  • Hotwire got me
I was hit by Hotwire booking a hotel room. Signed up to get 20% off my next booking. Next thing I knew, I was getting charged $10 a month for a "buyer's club". Caught it and took care of it right away.

When Hotwire sent me a customer satisfaction survey, I told them I loved their service but would never do business with them again due their associating with such a disreputable business. They lost my business forever in order to make a few cents!
  • Hearst Magzines(GoodHousekeeping, Redbook, etc)
Heres another company that is doing shady subscriptions!! I enter contests, and keep getting "You ordered this subscription" notices from them.--When I havent. Today, with Redbook I made SURE that I did not check any box for a sub and checked "Sweepstakes ONLY" on both sweepstakes drawings, and the subscribe boxes ARE NOT CHECKED and a short while later I got notice from BOTH drawings, in my inbox that I had subscribed to their magazine. Previous times: Then, a few weeks later, they send me notices I didnt pay, etc., and they are "turning me over to a collection agency"
  • It happened to me with my last order to clothing purveyor Haband
I Emailled Haband and complained when I saw the charge on my Master card bill. They referred me to a third party. I complained to the third party and the charge was taken off my Master Card quickly and permanently but with no apologies. In my Email, I accused Haband of outright fraud (my opinion). The next day, their web site was off the air for several hours. Don't know whether or not there was any connection but I suspect they were revising their offer with better disclosure. I have been dealing with Haband for many years. I don't plan to do business with them again. They violated the trust I had in their company.
  • It also happens at CVS in store!
When checking out, there is a 'donate $1' to some so called charity which is very difficult to say no and get this off my bill. If cvs wants to donate, don't scam me and everyone else for all these dollars that add up to millions. It is quite a scam and has to be illegal. It is very difficult to remove this
  • ripoffs
How disappointing that one cannot trust these "reputable" companies. It all seems to be about greed. Who can we trust?
  • rip off
TigerDirect (last night I ordered from them) is there on the final pages for order completion
  • VisionDirect Scam
As you check out of VisionDirect, there is a checkbox already checked for coolsavings.com. i did not notice it and began getting charged a monthly fee immediately. I caught it five months later and contacted coolsavngs.com. They reimbursed me all except one month worth - I would have had to fill out some form. Just wanted to be done with the company. Complained to VisionDirect about this and to date no response. Will take my business to a competitor from now on, even if they charge a few dollars more.
  • "Save $10 off next order"
Got the offer on LD Products/4Inkjets. - the mousetype was there, and I happen to be "anal" about looking for it, but I can see how easy it is to be fooled.
By the way, have NEVER had any underhanded-or misleading offers from Amazon dot com - they are Awesome & honest!
  • Ticketmaster
They started debiting my credit card over a year after I made a purchase.
It pays to read your credit card statements thoroughly and regularly. I will never use Ticketmaster again.
  • Yes, it happened to me twice. TICKETMASTER purchase.
  • Customers Choice
We still have the choice of not buying on line. Even though, times are diffcult for businesses, it is not to their advantage to rip off their good customers. Instant dollars may improve their bottom line momentarily, but not for long. We are getting smarter.
  • Ripoff @ Fandango
It happened to me at fandango.com. The thieves trying to rip me off is creditreport.com. My credit card company is handling it.
  • Proflowers
I had a similar problem with Proflowers and a free shipping scam. I was on the phone with them for an hour before they agreed to cancel the charge. They have lost my busines forever for being so slimy.
  • Online scams
Another trick to watch out for is if your order had an "error" and you are required to add missing data. Sometimes the box or button you clicked "NO" on has now been reset to the default of "YES".

Anytime you are required to fill out a form a 2nd time double-check it before hitting "SUBMIT".
  • Lillian Vernon, too
I placed my order online and was asked "Would you like to save 10% on your next purchase?" I saw no mice type (I read those things!) and thought they would email me a coupon. Nothing extra was indicated at checkout, but charges appeared on my credit card days later. Only when I called did I discover that checking the box for "10% off my next purchase" had enrolled me in a "rewards" program. They removed the charges, but lost my business forever.
  • Travelocity/Discount Scam
In my case, the charges started to hit twice a month for around $33 (each) when I purchased an airline ticket from Travelocity.
  • Me Too
I've been a victim of such ripoff. I noticed the strange entries in my statement, but assumed that it was my wife's legitimate transactions. After 6 months and some $50 a month, I finally asked her and she didn't recognize those transactions.

Following the information in the transaction and looking up the company name, I could log on the automatic accounts thus created and confirmed my wife's name. I then made sure to cancel her "subscriptions" on each service, apparently all belonging to the same holding company.

I started canceling each transaction through the CC company and so far all have been approved. I'm just waiting for the payment for this month to chime in so that I can cancel the last transactions.
  • Harriet Carter/Shopper Discount scam
My mom has shopped at Harriet Carter for years; always through US mail. She wanted to order a couple of items and I offered to order them by computer for her. I did so and it was a year later when I found out she was paying about $10/month to be a member of Shopper Discounts and Rewards. She called them to find out who they were and how she got connected to their "membership". They said through a Harriet Carter order. Dad called Harriet Cater and they said she signed up online; mom never used a computer and I said, I never signed her up for anything! They told my dad that I must have signed her up. As others have said, I probably clicked on "savings here sign" or something and found out it was bull and signed off....not knowing just the click, signed my mom up for $10/month. They told my dad that I probably did not know what I was doing on a computer and that it was clearly up front in getting registered for "Shopper Discounts and Rewards". I have an electronics degree and started building computers for a living in 1985. I own websites and have surfed as much as anyone.....I'm computer savvy! No more Harriet Carter for my mom!

They ought to put some of these "big company" scam artists in prison and the money scams will cease. It's stealing!

Master Card took care of it but I have a feeling that they ate the loss? If that is the case, we're paying for it in the long run! We pay for prison too but that is my vote for a solution.
  • I can't believe people STILL, after all this time, click on stuff with reading it. It really is baffling. If you can't read it online, print it out and read it before agreeing.
  • US Airways ripoff
Call the credit card company you charged the tickets to and dispute the charge. Good Luck!
  • Yes, when I ordered on line with Harriet Carter, I was charged a monthly fee when I clicked discount. It was only $10.00 a month, but my credit card company took it off. I informed the Carter catalog that I would never order from them again.
  • US Airways is a rip-off
I bought 3 airline tickets on line they charged my creited card 1,399 and i never received my tickets .... they said they send them how funny I never got them. what can I do
  • Secret?
You always gotta read the fine print - I clicked on one of those once, it says you'll be enrolled and after the trial period you'll be charged, but you can cancel at any time...
  • Free Shipping Scam
I've been a victim of this for the past 7 months from freeshipping.com without knowing about it. My wife purchased flowers from Proflowers.com and was enrolled in this service, they make it seem like part of the checkout process so you have no idea what you are signing up for.
  • Doubleing your quantity
Beware of Cabelas checkout. I order ammo from them and have noticed when I go to checkout they have doubled the quantity that I ordered.
  • Rip off
I just had this happen !! I was mad. I called and they took off the charge quickly. How can they get away with this?
  • SCAM
Yep, Clark it just happened to me. It was a movie site. I should have known better and checked them out before TRYING to buy the DVD. They didn't have it. That is standard for this site.
After I caught the scam "subscription" charge on this months VISA bill,I told the bank and they are going to put it in dispute for me. All I had to do was google the name of the site and could have found out they aren't reputable. Just trying to make a buck through tricks.
  • Shoppers Discount & Complete Savings
We shopped at J.C. Whitney & my husband even asked me to read the small print. I did & didn't see anywhere that it said we would have to pay, so we did it. Big mistake as we were added to 2 "memberships", which I immediately canceled.
  • Guess I won't be buying on line......
    1. I live in a no sales tax state, so buying on line actually costs me in shipping and handling charges.

    2. Sometimes however, I have bought stuff on Over-Stocked dot com. I am going to check their policy now....
  • 3rd party add on
Add Time Life to your list; their 3rd party signs you up for WalMart discount cards that are charged to your credit card at $25/mo. Outrageous!
  • scanners at check out
How better to make billions when scanners are not programed to what the sale ads read, as well as what ever the tags under the products read, they are scanned and if YOU are not on top of it, you will pay more than you had anticipated. READ the scanner....while at the store. CVS is one of the worst in my area !! New Jersey
  • Let the Retailer know.
I was contact (as an online retailer) by a company that wanted to add offers to my online store. Their sales pitch was that I just had to add a script to the checkout confirmation page and their site would to the rest. They claimed a large percentage of customers would buy or sign up (for credit card offers, etc.), and I would get (as the retailer) a percentage of the income. 2 minutes of work and I'm suppose to realize an extra x dollars per customer.

I hate those extra offers when I shop (especially those by 3rd parties) and wouldn't do that to my customers, so I said no without looking at their fine print. But I can imagine some will say yes not thinking it though. Worse yet, in this deal it sounds like the retailer would have no control over what is offered, the terms or anything else. A raw deal for the customer the retailer may not have thought though or even be aware if it if it's farmed out to another company (Assuming it's not one of these no service companies that wouldn't care anyways)
  • Just happened to me
Found this on my bank statement yesterday. Seems after purchasing some concert tickets at Ticketmaster.com back in March of '09 they have been hitting me for $9 a month. Shame on you Ticketmaster for associating with these creeps!!
  • There's a reason this crap is put in mice type...THEY DON'T WANT YOU TO SEE IT!...so they can gouge you as they see fit.
  • I don't think the story is saying that someone "hacked" the site. I think it is saying that the companies are doing this. Something like "by signing up for our preferred customer program you can save 10% on your purchase today". Shame on the companies that do this and not make it abundantly clear about the terms of the agreement. But, I would almost guarantee that these people did not read the fine print.
  • Where is site security?
These huge popular shopping sites should have ample enough security that this should of never happened, or at least be found out and stopped after the first few complaints. I'd say these sites better offer some great specials to all customers and some freebies to the customers who were scammed. When I'm on a so-called secure popular shopping site, I expect to be safe, especially at checkout. Although, people should know the golden rule, never stray from the normal checkout routine, a pop up box shoots up with some goodie, ignore, finish checkout and get out of there.
  • check-out rip offs
Yep, I had a problem too at E-Harmony.
  • Staples Customer Service
I have had a beef with Staples already not honoring the lifetime warranties on products they sale and the packaging clearly stated that the retailer is responsible for warranty repairs.
