Dec 16, 2009 -- Google readies the Nexus One cell phone

Google plans to launch its own phone called the Nexus One. This groundbreaking device promises to challenge some long-held beliefs in the cell phone business.

Nexus One is a whole new way of thinking about data, calling, the web, e-mail, texting and functions yet to be dreamt of. Perhaps the most revolutionary feature is that the handset won't be tied to any one network. No more being handcuffed to AT&T, Sprint, Verizon and T-Mobile when you buy their handset.

With the Nexus One, you'll have one phone number that follows you anywhere around globe. You'll be able to make and receive calls from anywhere and not pay a fortune.

All of which underscores Clark's usual advice to not sign a contract with a cell phone company right now. You want to be free to take advantage of all the great developments that are coming.

Unfortunately, Clark won't be able to answer any questions submitted via commenting. If you have a question, please try posting it to our message boards.

  • We don't need more junk to communicate with. The innovation is great but communication is just that. I am not excited about computer phones. If I had a billion dollars and wanted to contact someone to buy something---I can still use an in line phone to make my purchase!
  • Better Cell Service
After Living in England in 2001-2002, I am hoping the cell providers in the US will eventually adopt their system. You go to a cell phone shop, much like a 7-11 in this country, purchase whatever phone you want and sign up for whatever service provider you want. No contracts, just pay monthly or as you go. Want a different phone after 3 months? No problem, just go buy a new phone and insert your sim card. All the cell providers care about and compete for is your service, not your phone. All the phones are unlocked. You can even buy a soft drink by simply pointing your phone at the machine and charging it to you phone bill at regular price!
  • Nexus One
First and Foremost developers are having a hard time in bringing workable apps that work across the OS platform for the Android handset world. So, I am assuming that Google anticipated in making their Nexus One prepared to ward off a downside in sales once most consumers realize that the promoted 10,000 Android apps don't really work that well or at all. Secondly their must be some negotiable terms for the Nexus One to work with non contractual companies like Virgin Mobile etc. If so, this will appeal to a much wider consumer base, in which to have a dream phone in which the consumer can control the monthly or yearly expense. In any case the Phone will sell, however I think their are a-lot of competitive phones on the market right now. This will include the HTC Pro -2.
  • Google phone
Just curious... who is carrying the service for this wonderphone? And who is to say that AT&T, Verizon or any of the other carriers would allow the phone, and all of it's features, to be accessable on their network? I haven't heard of Google building a worldwide wireless infrastructure. Has anyone else? That is a big question that needs to be answered before this device will sell.
  • Verizon
Perhaps the folks at Verizon didn't understand Mr. Hopkins!
  • VERIZON INTERNET
I HAVE VERIZON INTERNET- STOPPED WORKING INTERPETLEY- IT TOOK 6HRS+4 PHONE CALLS TO SOLVE THE PROBLEMM-NO SPEAK ENGLISH-WAITED 45 MINUTES TO TALK TO SUPERVISOR-NEVER HAPPENED-ASKED TO SPEAD WITH SOMEONE WHO SPEAKS BETTER ENGLISH-NOPE
  • Hey Fred...
You will probably be the first to accept the microchip implant after they brainwash you on how great it is.
  • MPS/ cell phones
I been using MPS for many years due to this same problem of over charging by other networks but the phones they have are of very few selections and love to be able to get a phone of my liking the prices are great and in some ares you have no reception so I welcome this idea with open arms

More competition is better. We had Verizon years ago. Their customer service is NO service--It's horrible, cell , business and home phone--all bad. We switched the cell to Virgin Mobile and customer service is fair, but on-line and cell service is good and a good value. The whole family has pay as you go phones. Just a little personal discipline with calls is needed. Never a contract again for us. God Bless you Clark and your Crew and your Family for having a decent, honest radio program that helps folks out!
  • Hey GP - the 1970s are calling...
and they want their attitude back.

"because quite frankly, there is too much
hype for having all that junk in the palm of your hand"

Did you feel the same way about personal computers when they started appearing in the 1980s? The iPhone and Nexus One are portable computers that also include a cell phone. All that "junk" represents a new way of looking at the world and getting things done. You can ignore it if you like, but it is here and it will change the way the world works.
  • Go Google!
This is by far the most interesting and hopeful Clark news in awhile. The cellphone industry has screwed us for so long. I've been with most em. AT&T, Verizon/Alltel, T-mobile, sprint and even virgin a few small local carriers in the early days. They all have their pros and cons but everyone charges too much for the services they provide. The gimmick for a longtime but more so now has been to offer a cell that was made for less than $40 yet is listed at $300 plus retail, offer that cell for $50-$100 with a 2 year contract and most think they're getting a deal. How we and our government, the entity that is suppose to be protecting the people, has not already dealt with these corporate monsters, shows us how embedded the corporates are in our government. Look at Obama and the new debate of rules for health insurers, he's asking them what he should do! I could go into it but I'll stop. Google good, government bad.
  • VerizonWireless
I called VW 800 service number, I was rounted through the same phone tree 3 times and the fourth time the last excuse for a service person hung up on me when i politely told her I couldn't hear or understnad her!!! I joined their forum and found people screaming about terrible customers service. I guess the Consumers rank must mean phone calling service, not customer service. Becasue we use less than 50 minutes a month combined, we are getting 2 VirginMobile prepaid phones because VW will not reduce their minimum charges and have Negative customers service. Savings, $800 per year x 10 years, $8,000 in my account not theirs. The ignorant and apathetic are too hung up on cell phones and features that only suck their bank accounts dry for pure entertainment to benefit the wireless companies!!! Glad to hear change is coming!!!
  • Pricing
Maybe this will get Apple to cut their prices. I for one do not own an I phone
because quite frankly, there is too much
hype for having all that junk in the palm of your hand. Maybe Google will come up with a way to drive your car with their phone or open your garage door or develop a security watch for your home.Who knows what else!!!
