Nov 23, 2009 -- The Peek offers unlimited e-mailing/texting for less than $20

How would you like to have unlimited e-mailing and texting for less than $20/month? A new handheld device called the Peek offers just that.

Clark first talked about the Peek last November. The device was originally marketed to tweens and teens, but that approach missed a more valuable market segment. Now they've modified their business plan to cater to small business.

Let's face it, corporate types don't know how much their Crackberry or iPhone costs each month; their company is paying for it! But entrepreneurs who are struggling to make a profit need to watch every penny.

The Peek Classic sells for $19.95 and is available in colors that would appeal to teens. The Peak Pronto sells for $59.95 in basic black for business types. And remember, there's never a contract.

Editor's note: This segment originally aired July 2009.

  • Peek Pronto
I've had my Peek Pronto for 4 months now. I am very happy with it! They have great customer service. I can read my news feeds on Facebook and post updates to them! There is all kinds of things you can do, read news feeds, send for email a question, you would normally google and get the answer! Its very simple to use!

People had similar confusion of why they would ever buy a Flip Video device but now Cisco owns Flip.

It appears Peek is buying wireless service from T-Mobile to enable the device to access email and send and receive text messages. Here is a coverage map. This might be a really nice solution for teenagers except it might encourage them to drive and text.

To use skype you need an Internet connection via WiFi, WiMax connection, 3G via a PDA phone, CDMA, etc. That is a lot more expensive than this device and defeats the purpose for those with PDA phones since you already have phone service. This device is targeted for email, texting exclusively. It appears they are buying data service via T-Mobile in bulk much like the Amazon Kindle eBook. I imagine in the future they will make be browsing available and then Skype might be an option for voice. But, T-Mobile would have to allow Peek to push voice IP traffic on their data network which I would guess they would never do since that would compete directly with T-Mobile phones - at least no time soon.

If you use freetext.com you again need a device with an Internet connection via WiFi, WiMax, CDMA, or 3G before you can even access freetext.com. So that is still not a real solution.
  • re: sss' question - it's just a text device
Peek does not handle voice. Not an option. Great device if you are a heavy text message person.
  • There are Free Texting on the Web!
Why not use freetext.com? or you can use skype which is free texting, calling, and conferencing and skype is compatible with most major phones.

is it still a phone or just an email/text gadget
  • Making Peek Classic work like Peek Pronto
What was is that Clark said you'd have to upload to a Peek Classic to make it work like a Peek Pronto?
