Nov 20, 2009 -- Bottled water banned in Australian suburb

How would you like to save more, spend less and getting ripped off…by ditching bottled water?

Bottled water costs around $1,400/year and represents an environmental hazard when you consider its packaging and transportation.

Now Bundanoon, Australia -- a suburb of Sydney -- has banned bottled water and created a nightmare for the industry. This is the first city in the world to stop the sale of bottled water.

Consider this: Tap water costs less than a penny per gallon and gives you access to clean, safe municipal drinking water. And here's a bulletin for bottled water drinkers: Companies like Coke (Dasani) and Pepsi (Aquafina) source their products from municipal water supplies -- just like tap water!

In addition, bottled water is only checked for safety about 12 times a year, while tap water is tested throughout the day.

Still uncomfortable drinking straight from the tap? Run your water through a filtered pitcher to remove impurities. Executive producer Christa, meanwhile, is investigating a $120 reverse osmosis filter for her home that attaches under the sink.

Remember, if bottled water is awful enough to be banned in Bundanoon, you should think about banning it in your life too!

  • Banning Bottled Water
Maybe they should also ban red M&Ms next. And cell phones because they emit radiation and not everyone recylces them. The list goes on...
  • The BEST water
Shame on you Clark for endorsing a government that tramples on the rights of its citizens. Not only does Australia ban bottled water but it also bans the right of its citizens to self preservation via self defense. As a member of the GA Guard you should know better. It's true most bottled water is trash and a ripoff. The ONLY water we should drink is DISTILLED water. It's whistle clean. Muni water is only tested for a few things using ancient standards. Muni water typically contains thousands of cancer-causing petro-chemicals. None of these chemicals are tested. In fact they are ignored. Mmmm delicious. Only DISTILLED water is free of these horrible substances. The average American, as usual, is totally clueless. PLEASE PLEASE wake up and get a clue before it's too late and we lose our country. Ever try living overseas? Good luck.
  • Bottled Water
It is true that companies such as Pepsi (Aquafina) source their products from municipal water supplies. However, I would argue that the comparison ends here. What Aquafina has over tap water is that it uses reverse osmosis (RO) to purify its water; tap water does not do this. I am not sure about you, but if you have ever looked at the tap water reports issued by your water municipality, the results are rather scary. Everything from lead to arsenic can be found in the water. Reverse osmosis helps remove a lot of this junk.

I will agree with Clark that bottled water is expensive and the packaging is a waste. However, if you live in a state with poor quality water (such as Nevada, Arizona, Florida, etc.) you may be better off drinking cleaner water that does not contain elevated levels of chlorine.
  • Convenient
It’s hard to beat the convenience of bottled water. When running out the door it’s nice to have something to grab for the road. The only people I know who drink exclusively bottled water are rural. It’s important for some people not to drink well water because it can be loaded with chemicals from farming.
  • Water additives, etc.
Maybe it's just me, but I'd rather have chlorinated/fluoridated water coming into my home than e. coli or typhus. Simple filters can remove most of the chlorine and other additives once the water is in your home. If you use bottled spring water, it had better be in glass bottles, because plastic bottles leach chemicals into the contents--antimony (which behaves much like lead), bisphenol A, and other endocrine disruptors. And it takes several times as much water to manufacture the average plastic bottle than the volume of water that it can hold. I'd think twice before giving a child bottled water....
  • Never picked up the habit
I hate bottled water- the way it tastes- and never really buy it. I think I have bought 3 this year and thats just to put in the diaper bag for emergencies! Its a habit I never picked up and am much happier for it!
  • banning bottled water
Municipalities add chlorine and fluoride to our drinking water (and who knows what else). These chemicals are not safe for our children; as a parent of a formula-fed infant we're concerned enough to have switched to bottled spring water without these additives. In AMERICA I should have the choice of how to feed my family instead of another "government mandate". Hopefully, we don't go the way of the Aussies.
  • Environmentalists are hypocrites
Environmentalists are hypocrites because they are not willing to sacrifice their wants, but want everybody else to sacrifice.

shafaa, I dare you to say you are not a hypocrite.
  • banning bottled water
Take a look at your local waste disposal site. I bet you can find one within ten miles of your residence because they are that numerous! Visit the waste site and tell me about how fragrant it smells and how many plastic bottles, containers, tupperware containers, cups etc. are in it that will NOT degrade over time and will find its way back into our food supply. I guess you can call me an "environmentalist" because I recycle only what our recycling center allows us. If more people just recycled their plastic bottles and bags---we wouldn't need to open as many landfills as quickly.
Stop labeling people and generalizing because they (the people of Bundanoon) want to do something positive for their community. I can think of more important liberties that we give away everyday in our own communities just because we don't want to get involved!
  • Banning bottled water
Big Brother here we come. So what will be next to be banned? Just think about it, how many things are thrown in the trash that could eventually be banned because it's "bad" for the environment. Just about everything, according to the environmentalists, is BAD for us!
