Nov 19, 2009 -- Gazelle pays you for your gently used electronics

Do you have gently used electronics laying around your house that you could bear to part with? Gazelle.com is one site that gives you the opportunity to turn your e-trash into cash.

You simply log onto Gazelle and enter the make and model of your electronics -- everything from cell phones, mp3 players, computers and cameras to GPS systems and gaming consoles. The service then makes you an offer.

If you accept the offer, Gazelle sends you a box to ship your item(s) in and even pays for the postage. It typically takes about a week before you're paid once they receive your package.

Many major retailers are now also partnering with Gazelle. That means you can log onto the websites of Costco Wholesale, Wal-Mart and Sears to do your transaction. If you go that route, payment is remitted in store gift cards.

What others are saying

  • Gazelle
This is indeed a scam , i sold my blackberry curve 8900 and they offered me 165.00 this was on nov 15, i still havent received my money all i get is excuses.please do not use them, i am looking into ways of bringing this company to light as we speak. i am out of my phone and any money for it but if i can save others frm this scam so be it.
  • Better choice??
I just tried to see what Gazelle.com would give me for a Canon Powershot SD700IS camera. I marked it in poor condition because there are many scratches and the telephoto lens doesn't retract with the dial, only when you turn the camera off. The bottom line was they offered $3.00 for the camera. Best Buy offered something like $17 dollars for the same camera.
  • An alternative, not a scam...
Nowhere does Clark or Gazelle.com say that Gazelle is a "charity" or a non-profit. They simply say they will pay you for your goods, or take them off your hands. They don't say they will pay top dollar. If E-bay has bids for more, sell it there. This is simply an alternative to those people who don't want the hassle of trying to sell, recycle, or trash products on their own.

And the fact that it is a for profit company does not make it a scam. Profits are a wonderful thing....the reason many of you are even looking at the Cazelle site is to receive money for a product.

Just like anything else...do your due diligence and make an informed decision.
  • lying vs laying
According to the textbook I used when I taught sixth grade, lying means reclining(as in I am lying on my beach towel) and laying means placed (as in I lay the book on the table)
I vote for laying as my computer doesn't really recline -
  • cell phones for soldiers
donate your old cell phone or ipod etc.. to cell phones for soldiers. they pay for postage if need be and they get repared or credit which goes to the soldiers over seas in the form of calling cards etc.. good cause.
  • gazelle
they offered me 6.00 for a phone never used that could be sold on ebay or trade for more
  • Scam
    @Tammy

...and I'll bet that once they receive your 'zero value' laptop, they'll sell it themselves and get the $200.

This is obviously a for-profit organization who pretends to be otherwise. Sure they'll 'safely recycle' my product... I guess 'safely recycle' is synonymous with 'sell it and keep the profit'.
  • not a charity
    oops...guess it's not for charity.

Thank you very much, Clark for this and all the articles that save $$ & possibly saves lives.
I plan to check it out of course & get back about it. If it=scam, I'll let you know.
  • I Do Not Think So!
Just checked out the website. I have an Acer Aspire one, fully functional, in good condition. They tell me it has NO VALUE!! However, they will gladly send a box for me to send it to them so they can "recycle" it for me!! I Do Not Think So!!

They are selling -with bids- ebay for $200 plus.

This is a scam if I ever saw one!
  • Best Buy
Best Buy is running a deal where you trade in your electronics for store credit. I knows its pennies on the dollar but some things its just easier for. Im trading in a laptop and gonna add some $$ to it and give it away for a holiday gift since I dont need any more electronics. Good idea of you are smart about it! (do your research first to be sure you are getting a fair deal)
  • Pennies on the dollar
You can be DARN SURE that you'll get pennies on the dollar for whatever it is you're selling. These folks are doing this for charity.
  • Not worth it...
I tried it on a never used GSM cellphone that I see selling on eBay for $75. Not only would Gazelle NOT pay me anything ("no market value" they claim), but they wouldn't pay for shipping. So, I'm to pay shipping to have them throw it away for me. I don't think so. Hello eBay!
