Nov 16, 2009 -- Nissan readies a $2,000 car for the Asian market

Coming changes in the auto market promise to save consumers thousands on new cars.

Did you know that it's already possible to buy a new car at or below $10,000? A scattering of VPs (value-priced lines) can be found across manufacturers. Honda started the VP trend years ago with late summer editions of the Accord and Civic that were bare bones and low budget.

Now the same thing is happening at the low end of the market. In Asia, people are routinely buying fully equipped cars at $5,000 -- and even $2,500 in some cases! In fact, Nissan Renault has a $2,000 car planned for Asia due out in the next two years.

Why would you care about a car being sold in Asia? Well, just look at the world of electronics, for example. Japan is the trendsetter and what gets sold over there usually makes it way over here two years later. The same is true with automotive technology.

Of course, making the necessary adjustments for our emissions and safety standards would probably tack about $4,000 or $5,000 onto a vehicle with a base price of $2,000.

In related news, Clark earned himself a reputation as an SUV hater about 10 years ago. But he wasn't strictly opposed to their low fuel economy. He was appalled by the rate of rollover death for passengers, and the incidence of highway death that other motorists faced on the receiving end of an SUV crash.

Both problems have been greatly remedied now that SUVs are built on car platforms instead of truck platforms. Now that's good news!

Unfortunately, Clark won't be able to answer any questions submitted via commenting. If you have a question, please try posting it to our message boards.

What others are saying

  • More demand for gas
This will definitely up the demand for gas as more people in the world become gas dependent. Gas will cost the same on the 2K car as the 60K car (more or less)
  • lexus vs nissan
I'm sure the $60K is all about the safety features. yeah right! Lexus = Corolla with a lot of marketing hype heaped on top of it. Just buy a Corolla & quite being such a chump.
  • safety
The $2000 car isn't going to be safe in a crash while the $60000 Lexus will provide significantly more protection in a crash.
  • Americans are so ignorant.
So you think a $2000 car is cheap?? yeah if you make the wages here in the U.S. In other parts of the world, $2000 is a fortune and also the fact that you have to pay hefty tax(i.e 100%)in addition to the price and usually would not be financed. The overall equivalent of a $2000 car would be $20,000 usd.
  • American Materialism
J.J. Spot on. I am a retired Navy Captain and have been doing financial seminars for the military for 16 years with a focus on materialism and how it impacts families and military readiness. I just released a book this week on Amazon.com titled, "Living well...making a difference." The chapter on materialism speaks exactly to your point. Thank you. America's financial crisis is hopefully going to teach folks that having a roof over their head is important but the size of the roof is not.
  • American Image
We as a society driven by Madison Ave. advertising are too preoccupied with image to buy 'low end' vehicles.

We must have the most, the best, and have it now, and pay for it down the line somewhere at some time.

Why would Americans buy a $2000 Nissan Renault when they can buy a $60,000 Lexus??
