Oct 26, 2009 -- Consumer Reports names the real deals at dollar stores

Consumer Reports has taken a close look at dollar stores in their Money Adviser publication and revealed what's a deal and what's not.

Products including cotton rounds, gift wrap, birthday candles, paper bags, composition notebooks, plastic cups, security envelopes, napkins, foam plates and tissue paper are among the best deals.

Money Adviser advises against buying jewelry (too much lead content); electrical products (possibly fake UL labels); medication (expired products); and vitamins (not from reputable sellers) at dollar stores.

Clark routinely buys medication like ibuprofen at dollar stores and has not found it to be past expiration date. Now, he could get a better deal on ibuprofen at a warehouse club. But unless you're in constant pain, who can use all those 12 million pills before they expire?!

Meanwhile, financially minded couple the Dolans recently identified some product categories they believe are not deals at warehouse clubs. These include produce and jewelry. Clark disagrees completely with the latter, but feels that if your produce goes bad before you can finish it, then it's no deal indeed.

Unfortunately, Clark won't be able to answer any questions submitted via commenting. If you have a question, please try posting it to our message boards.

what are your thoughts about this site?
  • Dollar Stores
The town where I live has many .99 cent stores, that now just about every shopping center has either a .97 or .98 cent store. Ha, ha.
Just watch out though, it's easy to buy junk.
  • HPT's
Pregnancy tests from the dollar stores are awesome. They work great, as good as EPT, and only cost $1 so definitely a deal! I've no idea why other stores do not carry a $1 option home pregnancy test
  • RE: LCD TV
Where did you get a TV for $1.80? ha

I bet if you bought 99 more TVs, none of them would break the way your's did. My point is you got unlucky. Is the damage not covered under the manufacture warranty?
  • LCD TV
Don't buy a HDTV LCD without a INSURANCE, I bought a 1.800,00 Sony 42 inches lcd hdtv brouken now is sitting in a leaving room to fix another 2.000.00
  • Know your prices
Regardless of where you shop you need to know your prices. Warehouse clubs have to make money so obviously everything will not be a great deal. Same with dollar stores. Some items are less than a dollar at your regular stores.
  • Sams Club Produce
I can ALWAYS find better deals on produce than Sams Club prices -- my gosh they charge outragous amounts.
  • Dollar Tree
I miss the discount they used to give teachers. I bought allot of stuff for my students and loved being able to do it. For myself, I like the shampoos, balloons and especially the READING GLASSES!!!
  • Sam's Club and bargains
With a family of six, I frequently find bargains at the warehouse clubs, even amongst the produce. You have to be aware what's cheaper there and what's not but how is that different from any comparison shopping? Some things are consistently cheaper (e.g. precooked whole chickens, diapers, etc.) and just those few things make it worth the annual membership.
  • Kids and the dollar store
I can drop $80 at chuckie cheese in no time, but give my kindergardener and my 3rd grader $5 bucks each and they just love hunting crap. Its big fun and a treat to them. The junk is great for sending care packages to friends kids that have moved away. The parents know its dollar store junk, but the kids go nuts over opening the box and dive into the stuff.
  • Dollar store all time best buys
As a part time painter, I buy all my paint brushes from there. A 3 pack for a buck, not even worth cleaning them when I'm finished. I just toss em.
And umberellas for a dollar. Ther are cheap and telescopic in design, but when you need one they work great. I buy a hand full of em and even let my kids destroy them playing in the front yard lawn sprinklers. Big fun for a few bucks.
  • Wal Mart Meat
I buy most of my fresh meat at the local stores that are prepared on site. I do not care for the taste of the meat that is pre-packaged and shipped into the wal-mart stores.
  • WALMART TAXY SERVICE
wALMART HAS GOTTEN SO SLOOPY,dO NOT BUY ANY CD'S OR MOVIES BECAUSE ONCE THEY ARE OPENED THEY WILL NOT ACCEPT THEM BACK.bROUGHT A $600.00 COMPUTER,EXCHANGE THE MODERN ONCE WOULD NOT DO IT AGAIN ,PRODUCT WAS DEFECTIVE SO THAT STOP ME FROM BUYING ANYTHING OVER 29.95.
  • FFood Purchase at Dollar Tree
Thanks for the tip.I do not buy groceries there but my sister does .I will let her know. Thanks
  • Dollar Tree cd's
Rexlaxing cheap music ,go to dollar general if you have one ,those relaxing cd is one a $1.00
  • cosco
Hi,You know that the bottled water is not purified just plan water,Get yourself a thermous canister and fill it up with water,Don't buy anymore bottled water when you get the same water at home.Just a thought to keep store price down.
  • Re:Dollar Store bad deal
OOps I purchased the paint from Dollar General not the Dollar store
  • Dollar Store bad deal
Don't buy any paint from dollar store
I paid $14 for a gallon of white latex paint and it ran like a cow P----g on a flat rock.
  • Dollar Stores
I am a huge Sudoku fan, and where else can you purchase Sudoku puzzle books for $1.00? They cost at least $4.95 everywhere else. I also purchase gift bags for all occasions and in different sizes for $1.00 each and use them instead of buying gift wrap and ribbons for gifts. Saves money and time.
  • Dollar Store Items
I LOVE Dollar Tree. I find most of my household cleaners and other miscellaneous items. They are much less expensive than the regular stores. Also, I have found a couple of 'salvage' type stores. While you have to look carefully, you can find some absolute bargains in them.
  • Dollar Stores, Aldi, and Costco
Regardless which store you go to, look carefully at what you buy. Dollar Stores do get a lot of merchandise that is close to their expiration dates, but much is as good or better than the big stores. Aldi, which started in Europe does get some great deals. We buy our milk there regularly at $1.50/gallon, compared to $2.25+ elsewhere. However, their cheese, while well-priced, goes bad much faster. We had some that started turning green less than two days after the package was opened.

Even CostCo is getting creative: their concept of a case of water, iced tea, etc., which used to be 36 bottles, now is 35, while the price has gone up a bit; creative marketing. Krogers, which used to sell their 1lb packages for a dollar ($.0625 per ounce), now markets the same items on their $.88 cent sales. However, the packages are now 12oz., which works out to $.0733 per ounce.

Deals aren't always what you think. It remains, "Buyer beware" and "Buyer, be wise." Hope this helps.
  • Dollar Tree and other discount stores
I go to Dollar Tree a lot more and really try hard not to buy the cheap stuff from China. If you look hard enough- you can find it! Also, I have switched to buying groceries at Aldi's. Best produce, their brand is great and SO much cheaper then regular grocery stores!
  • Dollar Tree
When shopping at the Dollar Tree stick to purchasing the name brand items -- the other stuff is junk. Paper products are comparable to grocery store brands.
  • Dollar stores
I have been shopping in the dollar tree for years. I use to find great bargains all of the time. I have bought books, picture frames, plastic dinner ware, batteries, drinking glasses, tooth brushes, vases, etc. There was a time that I would see brand name items on every visit. Last year, I even bought brand name facial soap that sold in the drug stores for $5.00 each. I am down to three bars. I use to get brand name sunscreen for the face. Unfortunately, dollar stores now produce their own products and there are very few brand items. In my opinion, some of the store produced items don't have the ingredients that I want. I have found that if a brand item that I like is in the store to buy it on that visit. The prices in warehouse stores are sometimes good and sometimes not so great. I bought apples for about a $1.00 a pound when the grocery store in Walmart and Kroger were selling for about $1.50 per pound. I use to enjoy going into the Dollar Tree. Now that the economy down, everyone who wouldn't be seen in one is there. It made me feel good knowing that some people were throwing away money in high price stores. I have found that the best way to shop is to know prices in most of the stores that you shop in. When a sale comes along, take advantage. I also use my cell phone's calculator when I need one.
  • Produce! and Dollar stores
I find USUALLY produce is more expensive at Sam's Club (because I work there and notice!) not to mention EVERYTHING I buy is always on SALE! like grapes are $6-$7 for 3 pounds, and Walmart or Aldi's has them $.99@lb. Well I'm thinking people you tell me $3 or $7? UnLESS they are from CHINA OR MEXICO (which alot of produce, even warehouses sell from Mexico) why is YOUR warehouse grapes better than My KROGER, ALDI's or WALMART??? SOME PEOPLE have NO VALUE of money or are they just plain ignorant or STUPID!?!?? AS for Dollar stores, they should be Illegal, I always say that, because, how often can you go in there and look and just spend $1? I always find stuff I need or a GOOD DEAL! So for me it is like the $40 store or more!!!!!!
  • Dollar Stores
The dollar stores I have been to have great CD's with relaxing music. And a
H U G E no to the toy trucks that generally break before you leave the store...!
  • 99 cent greeting cards
I’ve found that the 99 cent store has some really nice greeting cards. They open to read in the cellophane pre-purchase wrap. I like to buy 15 at a time and then wait for the event, BD, Miss you, get well etc. The price is right and the cards are beautiful with both the photos and writings.
  • dollar stores
I buy weekly groceries at the 99 cent store. Name brand canned soup and canned fruit. Some are good buys and some are the same as Wal-Mart but more convenient to purchase all in the same place.
  • Food purchased at dollar stores
Be careful purchasing any food produced or packaged in China. The food purity and safety laws there are not as strict as in the US.
  • the article doesn't open full screen.
  • dollar stores
I find things like photo printing paper, crochet yarn and other craft supplies, plastic storage bags, mailing supplies for ebay sales, lots of useful things that I save big bucks on at Dollar Tree.
  • Dollar Store
I find that the cleaning products are also much cheaper at the Dollar Store. Dollar Tree here is everything for $1 where the Dollar Stores just have cheaper merchandise (sometimes).
  • fresh veggies
I am a rabid Aldi fan, but I also like to shop ethnic grocers. Often the produce (like limes in a Hispanic store) is considerably cheaper
  • $$ Stores
The Dollar Store is false advertising. The Dollare Tree is WONDERFUL!!
I bought goblets that are Made in the USA!! AND the quality is fabulous!
That is not the only thing. Their picture frames are wonderful, also.
    I love shopping here.
  • Check out 99centsonly Stores
Out here in Calif., we have the 99centonly stores and are big shoppers there. It's amazing. The foot traffic in the Wilshire Blvd. stores is so heavy, they can barely unpack the produce before it's gone ...meaning its really fresh. This week, huge watermelons, huge packages of squash, organic romaine lettuce all for under a dollar! Brand name soups, fancy canned goods... We once found hugmonous restaurant sized jars of Kraft mayo and name brand gallons of OJ for under a dollar. Some customers were buying them by the case. Once you go, you know.
Best, everything is 99.99 cents, sometimes less so no price variations. It is always an adventure to shop there as you never know what you will find.
Great for seasonal Holidays stuff too.
    Clean, well organized stores.
(Full disclosure ... I own stock in NDN..and get a shareholder perk of a certificate annually for any 1 item in the store...cute!) I believe 99centsonly is a true dollar store and the best of the bunch.
  • Dollar store
I figured out how they make money. Cheap little items (like a small plastic soap box) is also a buck while its actual cost probably is 20 cents. A bigger item's actual cost is probably 50 or 70 cents(or even more than a buck). So it all evens out and they still make a profit.
  • Dollar Tree Vs Dollar Store
Dollar Store Should Not Be Called Dollar Store. As They Are Now Everything Now Is $1.29 Each, Where As Dollar Tree Is Still Only $1.00 each And Cards Are 2 For $1.00. I Perfer The Dllar Tree, Nicer Items. The Awesome Detergent Is Great.. I try Not To Buy Anything From China.
  • Dollar General
Dollar General is my favorite store. I can buy scented candles much cheaper, and buy canned dog food and dog biscuits very cheap. I also buy canned green beans, which I supplement my dogs food with, for 60 cents a can.
  • Dollar Store
Dollar Stores are great I give my young grandchildren $5 to shop and it keeps them busy for hours
  • Dollar Store
Great place to pick up items for a reasonable price that will be disposed of quickly. For example paper towels and measuring cups for herbicide or pesticide mixes.
  • Dollar Store
I think a basic idea of the dollar store is virtually always missing when I see reports on comparisons. Like apples and oranges, as Clark likes to say. For example, I need a ladle. I don't need a $6.95 super duper ladle, just a $1.00 ladle is fine and it'll last forever. No, I wouldn't give it as a gift, but I'll use it as it's just fine and seems to last a very long time as is testamony in my house. Also, maybe I only need a set of 2 batteries. I don't want to buy 4 or 8 or 20 in a pack for X amount of dollars. I only need two. If I buy more they'll sit, maybe for 6 months, a year, etc., and just get old. The list goes on and on. I only want a small bag of candy, a plastic container of such and such a size, their paper products do me just fine. I always think of the $ store before I head to a dept. store and spend way more than my real needs.
  • $ stores
Dollar Tree is the best $ store. Everything is $1 except for cards 2 for $1. Large variety of cards. Great looking gift bags and tissue. I always hit Dollar Store at Christmas and birthdays.
  • Wholesale Clubs & Jewelry
My fiancee got my engagement ring at BJ's. We spent a lot less for it there than a similar ring at Walmart. It was exactly what I had wanted because of the number of stones to represent our years together.
  • Walmart
Walmart sometimes refuses to take my coupons and I don't understand why, it is embarrasing. I called the manager once but they continue to do it.
  • Produce @ warehouse clubs
I LOVE produce at Costco...stays fresh forever better quality than grocery chains and for less. Worth the trip for me.
  • This is news? Anyone with their head screwed on straight already knows this. I'm disappointed...
  • produce at warehouse stores
I avoid the warehouse stores' produce...it is never as fresh as the Farmer's Markets which are selling local which translates into fresher and less impact on the environment in shipping. The warehouse produce isn't bad, it just isn't as fresh nor lasts as long. Also, more variety at the Farmer's Market and a fun excursion with friend or family.
  • made by?
I watch if a product is made or distributed by a certain place, trying not to buy too much made in china anymore
  • $ store
You can buy a 2 liter coke @$ store for $1 or $1.25 whereas everywhere else they are $1.79 to $2.00.
  • Dollar Stores
I have found that the 'Dollar Stores' carry things that are more than a dollar. However, the only one I have found that EVERYTHING is one dollar is Dollar TREE.
  • Pinching pennie
I agree that you need to be careful, wherever you shop. Aldi is great for what they have, and I've not been disappointed in quality. Wal-Mart is going downhill and also scamming the public if they don't pay attention, by cutting quantities and using deceptive shelf unit cost labels.
  • Deal at Dollar Store
If you don't need prescription eyeglasses just readers you can't beat a dollar at the Dollar Store. I have seen the exact same pairs for $18.00 elsewhere.
  • $ Stores, Sam's, Aldi's, Etc.
The main point, as someone else stated, is to know your prices. I paid $1 Sat. for 8 pack bite-size candy at Dollar Tree; same at grocery was $1.69. Aldi's does have great buys on produce. I find BOGO at chain groceries to be good value.
  • $ store
Just came back from $ tree. I usually buy my computer labels there-so much cheaper but alas they are out and no idea when they might have them. That is what happens at $ Tree. Get the item while you can. they had beautiful Christmas balls. And please as a former teacher DO NOT buy your items from $ Tree simply make them some homemade cookies!
  • Never flush drugs!
Put them in a plastic bag and dump in the trash. Don't know why people ever started this in the first place. Flushing meds pollutes our drinking water and harms the environment.
  • Dollar Tree
Dollar Tree products are like products anywhere else. Some great buys and some not so great. My toothpaste, Pepsident, costs more there, but wrapping paper and simple party supplies are great quality for the $$$ and a great buy at $1. The chain Dollar General however is not so great, usually with products costing more than almost anywhere else.
  • Dollar Stores
Oh, By the way, I hope everyone notices that a lot of products are dollar size - compare the ounces you are getting in a box or onces of liquids - you may be surprised.
  • 99 cent stores
My wife and I shop dollar stores for bargains on produce and canned goods. We check price per ounce on products and compare w/ national chains. Big savings if you're careful! We're noticing different demographics shopping there now as more and more people are pinching pennies.
  • Dollar Store Greeting Cards
Greeting cards from the Dollar Stores are my favorite buy. At two for a buck, it's a deal. The choice may be somewhat limited, but I'm pleased and stock up on them every month. By Bee
  • store brands
I think the quality of store brands seems to vary by chain. In the past, I've found the WalMart "Great Value" brand to be VERY low quality, but our regional grocery store, HEB, rarely disappoints with their store brand.
  • dollar store cleaner
Awesome cleaner, available in the dollar store for $1, is truly an awesome product. It's so good and so cheap, I sometimes wonder whether some investigator will report that whatever makes it work so well is poisonous.
  • Warehouse Fruits
It seems like when I buy my fruits from Sam's they go bad way faster than when I purchase them from Publix. The salad items seem like they last a long time. Don't know what the issue is but I should remember to return rather than throw out!
  • Store brand v. known brand
Be careful buying store brands, especially sweets and crackers. Often times, there will be (more)trans fats, hydrogentated oils and fillers vs. a name brand with less additives. It might taste the same, but your body suffers the consequences with sub-par, mass engineered ingredients. I will buy store brand pretzels, organic milk, and some meats. For health reasons, I try to stay away from canned goods all together but find store brand canned beans don't make too much of a difference v. name brand. Read those labels!
  • Produce Prices
I also agree that Aldi has the best prices for produce. The one thing that can not beat buying produce, is growing your own. I grow all produce all year around. I really save bi bucks that way.
  • UNIT cost Clark
When shopping at a warehouse club or dollar store, you should still pay attention to the UNIT COST. Some items might actually be cheaper at another store, that doesn't bill itself a "dollar store". Paying $1 for a can of soup that is on sale at your grocery for 80 cents makes no sense. Not every bargain in the dollar store is a bargain. Just because everything is a dollar doesn't mean you can stop being an informed consumer when you walk through the door.
  • Store Brands Same As National Brands
For Penny Pitcher: You should be aware that many, if not most, store brands are THE SAME product as the national brands. A manufacturer produces a product, then sells it to one or more distributors, who are then free to slap on their own labels. In many cases all youre paying for is more expensive design and marketing. (It works, too--witness your reaction. They've got you convinced that branding means higher quality) Don't be fooled.
  • Hate Dollar Stores!
My family stays out of the dollar stores. They sell nothing but junk, and lower our standard of living in America. I felt the same way in the late 1970's, when "store brands" started to show up in the grocery stores. Cheap, inferior products, made mostly of water, waste my pennies.....
  • Expiration Date
Also it's important to keep in mind some "expiration" dates are "sell by" expiration dates and some are "use by" expiration dates. IMO most of them are very conservative estimates and acutally bear no resemblance to reality.
  • Expired medicines
Do your research on expired medicines. The WSJ did an piece on this years ago and how it's a marketing ploy by big pharma to turn over inventory. The article said the Pentagon saved millions because they found most expired drugs in their stock to be 99% effect over several years. We did a science fair product on expired food as well...I think people are so scared that expired drugs are going to turn into poison or something. Poor little old ladies refill their medicine cabinets, flush the good drugs down and pollute, and waste their money replacing perfectly good stuff. How sad...
  • Produce Purchases
I'll go to Aldi, they have some of the best prices. You have to look at what you are buying and the selection is not as big as the super market or club store, but the prices are great
  • Pregnancy Tests
Hello...pregnancy tests for $1 - you cant beat that with a stick! Its the same manufacturer that they use in med clinics. You get a positive you can bet it is accurate. If its negative, wait a few days and take 5 more :-) Sure beats the $15 that the other stores charge!
  • Produce Prices
I find the produce prices at regular supermarkets and warehouse clubs way too high. As far as the dollar stores, the quality does not seem good enough. My best experience buying produce for low prices is at the international supermarkets like Super H Mart, Assi and all the other ones that are in the area. For $20 -$30 I walk away with a cart full of fresh veggies!
  • dollar stores are incredible
Deodorant at Walgreens for $3.25 or the exact product at a dollar store for $1.06? Dial Gold 3 bar pack for $4, or Dial Gold 2 bar pack for $1.06? Those are just two examples, but there's no shame in shopping at a dollar store. Just because you're paying more does not make the product any better.
  • produce
We buy all our produce there and have never had issues, great price and great quality better than at the grocery.
  • wholesale clubs
I find toilet tissue, diapers, papertowels to be over priced at the wholesale club I shop..most other things pretty good, especially canned veggies (for those emergency last mintue meals for kids on the run)
  • Produce at Wholesale Clubs
Completely false. We buy the bulk avacados for parties which are a steal. My fiance buys the blueberries, strawberries, and rasberries which are about 1/3 what they are in the grocery store. Yes, you must use them quick but she has at least one shake a day and puts them on her cereal or in her yogourt.
