Oct 16, 2009 -- Clark Smart tax credits for energy-efficient home upgrades

A slew of federal, state and local tax credits are making payback on energy-efficient upgrades to your home a great deal.

EnergyStar.gov has compiled a list of the federal tax credits. Contact your state and municipality for more granular details about local tax credits.

Energy-efficient upgrades can really help you reduce your monthly utility bills. In the past, we've always felt very passive about our utility bills, thinking that whatever they were, they were. But there is a lot you can do to lower them.

Clark is so into this idea that he even installed an energy-efficient HVAC system at one of his rental properties. He didn't have to do this; the tenant pays the bill. But he doesn't know any other way to think about energy!

Unfortunately, Clark won't be able to answer any questions submitted via commenting. If you have a question, please try posting it to our message boards.

What others are saying

  • clarks generousity
the tenant not only pays the utility bill but also paid enough rent to purchase the system. Clark gets to write off the cost of the system on his taxes vs the rent he collects. If he ever decides to sell his rental he will get more for it because it has a newer energy efficient system...so not only does he get the money back in tax write-off but when he sells he gets it back in his pocket....how generous
  • How about an income tax break for all?
So it's 30% tax credit on up to $1,500 on most items such as roofing, doors, windows, insulation, central air and water heaters. 30% of entire bill for a geothermal heat pump(10-20k), solar panels(10-30k) and wind turbines(huh???mega$$$). The hybrid car tax credit of course only applies to new cars bought within 15 months of it leaving the factory, so no credits on a new last year models or used hybrids. Pardon my French but isn't this just another clusterfunk? The same old same old, more tax credits for companies and people who can already afford these items. Enough of this forcing people who can afford it and excluding others because they cannot, in buy this or that in order to get a part of this stimulus package. I'm all for conserving energy, I do so by using LESS, but giving companies and people other peoples money is not the answer. Solution! Drop the federal income tax dramatically, let people spend their own money their own way.
