Oct 14, 2009 -- Straight Talk expanding; T-Mobile readies Project Black

MONEY-SAVING MOMENT: Straight Talk service will be available nationally through Wal-Marts around the country beginning Oct. 18.

For those of you who haven't heard of Straight Talk, the wireless carrier offers plans starting at $30/month for 1,000 minutes and 1,000 texts, plus an unlimited plan at $45/month.

It operates on the backbone of the Verizon network, though it is not branded by Verizon in any way.

One drawback of Straight Talk is that the phones are decidedly low-tech. You won't find any compatible smart phones for the network. Some people, however, are doing what's called "flashing" phones, where you take a fancy phone and tweak it to work on the Straight Talk network.

In another boon for cheap cellular service, we're beginning to hear word about something from T-Mobile called Project Black. This cryptically named market thrust will reportedly usher in much lower price points for unlimited service starting at $50/month. But for now, this is just a rumor until it goes public.

The key takeaway for you is that if you're trying to decide whether to sign a new contract with your provider, don't do it. We will have much lower price points around the country coming soon.

Remember, this is the time of year leading up to Christmas when important new pricing initiatives are rolled out. It's a great time to go re-shop your service. The best deals are generally from second-tier providers like Cricket, Metro PCS, Boost Mobile, Virgin Mobile and Straight Talk. All of them offer unlimited calling from $30 - $50 per month.

This is the future of cell phones. The "bucket of minutes" business model is going away.

What others are saying

  • Boost and Straight Talk issues!
I tried Boost and took it back the next day! Piece of trash!!! Wasted $50. Then I took clarks advise and tried Straight Talk and kept my old phone active. I like straight talk BUT when I went to move my old Verizon number over they wanted to remove all the minutes I had just paid for. That would be another $30 out the window! I told then it sounds like you are charging me to move the phone number over. I got no help from cust no service in some foreign country.
  • Alternative to Straight Talk
I switched to Boost Mobile, and was able to get five bars in Radcliff Kentucky and great coverage all the back home to Powder Springs Georgia, with very few dead spots. They have a flat, unlimited $50.00 per month plan for talk, text, and web. I have been with them since August, and very satisfied so far.
  • Do not buy the activation cards when you buy the phone
I previously was a Metro PCS customer, and went to visit my daughter in Radcliff/Ft. Knox Kentucky. On 8/26/09 I purchased the Straight Talk phone and activation card in Louisville since they didn't carry them at the local Walmart. Before purchasing I called Straight Talk to make sure that they had coverage in Radcliff and I was assured by their customer service rep that they did. Five hours later with their customer service after purchasing the phone and they could not activate it, they inform me that they did not have Verizon coverage in Radcliff. (Funny though I was talking to them on my daughter's Verizon phone, but apparently Straight Talk only works off of the towers, and not extended Verizon coverage.) I was instructed by the Straight Talk supervisor to return to the Walmart where I purchased the card to get their assistance with the refund on the $45.00 card. Their assistant manager spent two hours on the phone with Straight Talk's non-customer service and finally they gave him an address for the TracPhone Return Center for me to mail the card and my receipt to get my refund. As of 11/4/09 I still had not received my refund so I called their non-customer service and after explaining the entire story to the rep and giving him my refund information number he explained that they could not give me a refund. I politely requested to speak to a supervisor, and for at least five minutes the rep argued with me that he couldn't give me a refund. I finally got angry and used some choice words, then the rep laid the phone down for five more minutes before finally getting a supervisor for me who after checking into it said that it might take fifteen working days to cut a check for my refund, so who knows if I will actually get a refund. Straight Talk has the worst customer service I have ever encountered, so hopefully you will not have to deal with them.
  • Question about page plus
I was tald that page plus has an unlimited talk n text. However, when I verify it.it says that 20MB,$2.19 charge a day for unlimited plan. are they missleading people by not telling them or am I reading it wrongfully?
thanks Clark for the great show.
  • straight talk
On your recommendation I switched to the $30. plan that you reported on TV one evening today.

Tried to get "customer No serv" to "code" the new phone they shipped to me - however they have a "known issue" with this Samsung phone & will have to ship me another.
Their customer "no serv" is in the Phillipines & I contacted the corporate office in Miame & was given the same run around that their policy did not allow "overnite serv & that it would be 3-5 days before Iget another (defective) phone?

    Buyer beware-this customer serv stinks!!
  • Coverage
I do not understand coverage maps. When your phone can not connect to a site on your provider's network and there is signal available on a competitor's network the phone goes to 'roam'. Since all of the 1st tier carriers do not charge for roaming why wouldn't anyone just shop for the least expensive minutes plan with no raoming charges.
  • Straight Talk unlimited
I appears that Straight Talk is CDMA, not GSM. Also, it appears that data in the unlimited plan not truely unlimited, but is strictly defined. I found out about this at http://www.publicknowledge.org/node/2705
  • Straight Talk RULES
Switched to Straight Talk 2 months ago. Went from paying out the you-know-what with AT&T Family Plan to saving $40 / month with Straight Talk! Better yet, all the dead zones I had with AT&T are gone...and with Straight Talk I have had NO dead zones. Thanks for the tip. I've told numerous friends and they have made the switch and love Straight Talk. There are a few people who want a 500 minute plan for $15-$20 / month. Anyone listening?

The $80 Straight Talk phone is one of the top 5 worst phones for radiation (maybe that helps eliminate the dead zones) so do what I did and get the wired headset at Amazon for $1.38!
  • Comparison between Talk Away, Page Plus, and Straight Talk
Talk Away and Page Plus both charge $39.95/mo. for unlimited talk, text, and 20 MB data transfer. They charge the same fees, and both operate on the Verizon network and has roaming capabilities. Two cavets: Page Plus charge almost 60 cents/minute for roaming; whereas, Talk Away doesn't. Page Plus does not charge an activation fee when done on their website; whereas, Talk Away charge $9.99 activation fee.

Straight Talk charges $45.00/mo. and even though on VW network it doesn't have roaming capabilities. In fact, it won't work when in roaming area.

Verdict: You do a lot of travelling go with Talk Away.

If anyone can please share anymore companies, it would be greatly appreciated. I get slammed with $400.00/mo. with Verizon. :( Thank you in advance.
  • Cell Phones unlimited coming soon
Clark you have been sayng this for years and I mean over 10 that this is coming and now we see a few cheap carriers offering this but I doubt any of the major carriers are going to keep the price below $50 per month. What do you think?
  • Straight Talk
I have had Straight Talk's unlimited $45/month plan for about 2 months now and am very satisfied.
  • Project Black
For you folks who don't know what is really going on right now with T-Mobile, let me fill you in on something. They are losing an average of 100k customers a month. They have issues with dropped calls, no calls, delayed sms, mms etc. As far as Project Black goes, the plan is called the T-MOBILE UNLIMITED LOYALTY PROGRAM which gives unlimited talk only, no data, no sms/mms etc. and it is only for customers who have been with T-Mobile for a minimum of 22 months. Don't expect T-Mobile to offer any unlimited plan that includes everything anytime soon. THEY HAVE A VERY LIMITED NETWORK CAPACITY. There network is already pretty much overwhelmed with the Loyalty Program going on.
  • Page Plus Cellular is a better value than Straight Talk .
  • credit card
please clark why don't you tell your lestener if you don't agree with cc increace 28% and you take 0% interess deal how it will effect your credit,i score.I try to follow your advices but anytime i try there is a down side.please tellus the wole picture.thank you from loyal lestener.
  • StraightTalk Wireless
ST has givin me so many problems!
Over Billed me 2 times, changed my number 2 times, very very bad service!!!
Hate them. Do Not use them, nothing but head aches to save $20 a month!!
  • Contracts
I don't care what anyone says, I will keep signing my contract w/ Sprint. I am on the older SERO plan and get practically unlimited everything including data for 30/month. No second tier provider can provide the phones that main carriers can.
  • A Tracfone company
This is the first time Clark I have seen endorse any plan from Tracfone!

I have been using the pay-as-you-go Tracfone plan for more than 2 years at an average cost of less than $20 per month. That is just the way this senior uses a phone.

Sort of like the toll road business model. I like it!
  • Call Plans - don't sign a contract!!
No matter which company you choose, it pays to do some investigating about the technology. If it is a GSM carrier like T-Mobile or AT&T, you can buy an unlocked phone - I got the T-Mobile Dash NEW on ebay for $50 unlocked! I use it on AT&T, contact free. It is important that you say REPEATEDLY when you activate your phone that you do not want to be under a contract - say it over and over to every new person that you speak with while activating the phone. Persistence pays!
  • Why hasnt clark heard about Page Plus?
I know someone that has Page Plus Cellular and it uses the same exact covarage map as Verizon Wireless since it uses Verizons network. So why has Clark Howard not heard of this? And yes they do offer a better plan that Straight Talk and you can bring any phone from Verizon Wireless to Page Plus without it being illegal which is awsome!
  • Another unlimited plan
TalkAway has an unlimited talk/text and 20MB datat plan in Florida. Would like to know if Clark has any information on this company.
  • Higher end phones coming to Straight Talk
Straight Talk will be introducing no less then Five new phones along with their upgraded unlimited everything plan. They will have three LGs, including a slider and a flip along with two Samsungs. One is the R451G qwerty keyboard one. The other is the Straight Talk version of the Touchscreen Samsung Finesse.

As for flashing phones to Straight Talk. That is illegal as no phone that is not originally for Straight Talk is allowed. The only way that can be done with current ST policies is to clone an esn , which is illegal.

Page Plus though, does allow outside phones on their network, has a better priced 29.95 1200 minute/mms/50 meg plan compared to ST 1000. The Straight Talk unlimited plan is better value then the Page Plus unlimited talk/text/20 megs for 39.95 though.
Also, expect Metro and Cricket to merge if Project Black is real.
