Oct 14, 2009 -- Typical ATM fee, monthly checking fee reach new heights

A new survey from BankRate.com finds that customers of giant monster mega-banks are being hit with a triple whammy when it comes to ATM fees, checking account fees and overdraft fees.

• The typical fee to use an ATM as a non-customer is now $3.54.
• The typical monthly checking account fee is $12.55.
• Overdrafts fees on accounts can be between 2,500 percent and 3,250 percent!

Of course, the responsibility ultimately comes back to you. Giant banks don't force you to be their customer. If you're getting ripped off with a giant bank, it should be your mission to fire those "banksters."

There are many fine people in the banking business, especially at community banks and credit unions. Both do a great job for the customer. The one drawback is that they may not have branches coast-to-coast like the giant banks.

Second, know that there are many offers for truly free checking accounts with online banks, community banks and credit unions. Don't believe the giant banks when they promise you free checking that's actually known as "fee checking" in the lingo of the industry.

And on the issue of overdrawing, it is your responsibility to know what you have in your account. This can be tricky with auto debits and other drafts if you're not on top of your bank register. But the responsibility does come back to you.

After all, giant banks can't rip you off with 2,500 percent charges on an overdraft if you don't overdraw your account in the first place!

  • Best Checking Option in Alpharetta, GA
What do you think about ING DIRECT online banking (http://www.ingdirect.com/eo-high-interest-checking/)? Bankrate.com tells me this is the only interest checking, fee-free option I have in Alpharetta, GA. We just moved here from WI and would appreciate your advice in finding the best local banking option. Thank you in advance for your help!
  • re: Who pay checking fees?
I had a corporate checking account and personal checking account with Wachovia and they attempted to hit me with yearly fees after a year of "free" checking. When I closed the account and moved them to another bank I was asked why. I told them because of the fees. The young banker then entered the code "moving to another bank" instead of the code indicating the fees where the problem. I thought that was interesting.

My main checking is USAA which not only has no fees they pay me back when I get charged fees from other banks ATM machines. Plus they pay interest. That is the kind of service I expect. Bill pay is free, I can move money instantly between accounts for free. Imagine that. Even electronic fund transfers are free.

So, you might have some sort of very basic account of your have been an account holder for so long with Wachovia you are "grandfathered in." But, even their checking accounts for personal accounts has all kinds of fees plus charges for using safe deposit boxes that really, in my opinion, are not very safe. I was stunned to find out the Wachovia branch near me allowed anyone to just walk in the save. You had the choice of a safe deposit box that required a bank key or one that did not where you were the only key holder. They wanted me to sign an agreement holding them harmless if someone just walked in with my key and cleaned me out. I did not feel comfortable knowing that Wachovia just leaves it's safe deposit vault open and anyone can just walk in and probably does not re-key their safe deposit boxes. That is just hard to understand how they can even think that is a good idea.
  • Who pay checking fees?
I've had a checking account with Wachovia for 10 years, and I've never paid a single cent in checking fees. Who in their right mind pays a checking fee?
  • Fire those suckers!
Banks are so arrogant! They figure customers will be around no matter how much they rip them off. I haven't done business with a bank since 1978; credit unions are the best game in town, and they get all of my banking and lending business. I urge everyone to FIRE THE THIEVING BANKS and move everything to a friendly, local Credit Union instead. You'll love it!
  • cool!
Finally, Clark is not on the side of the whiners! I actually enjoyed that segment because it tended heavier than usual towards personal responsibility and discipline. Kudos!
