Oct 12, 2009 -- Cell phone calls from the air now legal in Europe

Making a phone call from an airplane that's in-flight is now legal in several European countries. Sounds cool, right? Well, maybe not. Clark would dread this coming to the Unites States, where it currently is illegal. The sky is the last bastion of silence a traveler can get!

The flight attendants' union is strident about making the current ban permanent in our nation. Yet surprisingly, Clark has not read anything in the European press to suggest that people are complaining about their fellow passengers talking on cell phones while in-flight. That would suggest that people are happy to hear their neighbors yapping away!

Interestingly, USA Today reports that domestic travelers are making calls using Skype while they're in the air. There's nothing specifically in the our ban to say that wifi calling services are illegal.

What others are saying

  • response to 911
Yeah they could have "called in" and reported the hijacking, then we would have sent fighters to shoot the planes out of the sky. Think about it, do you think the hijackers would really care if they had a military escourt?
  • Cell phones
Honestly, people can't even buy a box of cereal without checking in. People must think they look important yakking away. To me they just look pretentious. I just want to slap the rude phone users.
  • cell phones on planes
Some people/countries are very discreet while conducting cell phone conversations. Americans (for the most part) do not fall into that category. I hope cell phones are never allowed on on US companies.
  • 911
I wonder if 911 could have played out any differently if people were allowed to use their cell phones freely?
  • InFlight Yacking
I don't really mind people who want to spend their time yacking on the cellphone.. I'm a bit amazed they could do it for 2 hours +. My only concern are the passengers who YELL THE WHOLE CONVERSATION. *That* really bugs me! If we allow cellphones in flight, will they charge us for the needed aspirin too?
  • Cellphones in the Air
Since legislation is passed based on the highest contributor, I pray that some group will materialize to "contribute" big bucks to federal legislators to make cellphone use permanently banned in the air and a capital offense! I can't imagine being stuck on a plane next to some half-wit chatting on the cellphone for 5 1/2 hours straight!
  • Cell phone calls in the air
It is bad enough to go into a book store and try to browse with some idiot talking on the phone nearby. With all the passenger problems flight attendants deal with now, the first fight between the cell phone talker and the guy who wants him to shut up will get them banned permanently.
