Oct 12, 2009 -- Zenni Optical spawns competitors

Clark is into wearing cheap prescription glasses that don't skimp on style, as you may know if you've ever seen him on TV.

Many years ago, a listener shared a tip about ZenniOptical.com, which offers prescription glasses at $8 ($12 with shipping) for complete frames and lenses.

Clark's progressive lenses with some additional add-ons cost him a whole $37 -- nothing compared to what it might have cost in the past.

Yet Zenni has created so many Clark Stinks postings. One of the chief gripes is that Zenni doesn't offer any customer service after the sale. Even more vocal criticism came from people who are in the eyeglasses business themselves. But Clark had his Zennis vetted by a professional and the optometrist could find no fault with them!

In reality, Zenni has been an industry changer. Now you have competitors like EyeBuyDirect.com and GlassesUnlimited.com offer prescription glasses at similar price points. It's a wide open field.

Unfortunately, Clark won't be able to answer any questions submitted via commenting. If you have a question, please try posting it to our message boards.

  • Zenni Optical
Am I the only one who filled out the order with a plus instead of a minus? When my glasses arrived I couldn't see what they looked like on. I called customer service and they looked at my order and saw MY mistake. Since I believed I had been very careful in filling it out, I asked if I was the only one, "No it happens all the time", to which I replied then you need to change something, like maybe having the customer fax the prescription, what a novel idea?????Most of us hand over the script to the optician and have never had to know the + and - of our correction and therefore not aware we have made a mistake. I am getting 50% of the sale before postage. No packing slip to tell me that I had gotten my order, I was sure they belonged to someone else. So I probably won't order from them again and chalk this up to a costly ($40.00) error. Clark Howard fans don't enjoy losing money especially if it is easily preventable.
  • Zenni quality goes downhill
First pair of glasses w/ progressive lens ordered 1/08 were fantastic; after that 3 family members all bought from Zenni & all were quite pleased. I reordered 1/09, glasses took 10 weeks to arrive (was told problem w/ lens supplier), lenses were not correct, returned them & was told they were as ordered. No way -- Rx was same as prior year and I cannot see out of either lens. Zenni's customer service is awful & I'll never order from them again.
  • Zenni
Ordered a pair of progressive lenses with titanium frame. They arrived in less than 3 weeks. I'm satisfied with them.
I tried to order tinted lenses (sun glasses) in a larger frame but at check out it rejected the order. Contacted Customer service, they never got back to me. They lost a customer.
  • EyeBuyDirect Buy One Get one FREE
I Just got an email from the guys at eyebuydirect that there is a buy one get one sale until Sunday, thought you might be interested to know...
  • Only one complaint
My only complaint about Zenni is that you cannot order smaller frames for bifocals. I have always worn smaller frames with my bifocal Rx and I don't like Zenni's choices for multifocal. I ordered 2 pair. One with the bifocal and another frame just for distance. The single vision glasses were actually as big as the bifocals yet they wouldn't let me order that one in a bifocal. I hope they change that in the future. Otherwise, my whole family is satisfied with our purchases from them.
  • Zenni Competitors
It was a pleasure meeting you on Sunday. I just wanted to follow up with you regarding the online eyeglass company I have been using for years that I had mentioned to you while you were shopping. I checked their website to see if they were still an active company and low and behold they were, plus they now have an actual Atlanta/Mableton storefront location. Granted, the online prices are much less expensive but it is good to know that they have opened up options for the Atlanta shopper. The website was globaleyeglasses.com .
  • Zenni Glasses
I have bought 4 pairs of glasses thus far...and intend to buy more. My last pair were 100% titanium frames with no-line bifocals, transitions, etc. for $86.00. Walmart asked my $425.00 for the same pair.
  • frames
Some say they are getting 'same' frame from Zenni as optometrist's = they're not--they're 'knock-offs'; have just paid for right to use name and make their own cheap frame-not quality.
  • Frame Styles
I am a person who normally does not order apparel items via the internet due to the fact that I like to see what they look like by trying them on. I have been experiencing problems with eyewear lately because I usually need larger frames that cover my eyes without seeing out of the bottoms or tops of the frames. My recent optician/optometrist does not carry frames large enough for my face. How do you overcome this issue and ensure the size of the frames are adequate to fit the face or head?
  • Zenni Anti-Glare coating
Beth is right when she warns about their anti-glare coating. I used those pre-moistened lens wipes on my Zennis and it damaged the anti-glare coating, resulting in my eyeglasses turning hazy. Nothing to do at that point except throw them away.

If Zenni warned me about that, I sure didn't see it.
  • Zenni
We've used Zenni for about 2 years, and love it. The glasses are as good (or better) than you'd get at a brick and mortar store, and the prices can't be beat.

Don't be intimidated by the process of measuring for the frames, it's pretty easy if you take it step by step, especially if you have an old pair that fits to measure from.

For the pupil distance (not on the prescription) do this:
Put on your current glasses. Have someone use a DRY ERASE (NOT permanent!) marker to put a dot directly in front of each pupil. Make sure they shift from side to side when doing it, not just looking at the middle and glancing each way. Then take the glasses off and measure between the dots to get the P.D.
  • Eye wear
I am so on this just read this online about Zenn.Told my whole family .I am unemployed right now and need all the good discounts that I can get. Thanks Yall
  • We've ordered glasses 3 times from Zenni and never had any problem. Thanks so much for the tip. It has really saved us!
  • Be careful getting pupillary distance from retailers
One popular eyeglass retailer I had gone to for a number of years deliberately gave me the incorrect PD when I told them that I was ordering glasses on the web. It was off by 6 mm and that's a lot. They made sure to tell me that they were not responsible for any errors. Suspicious, before I ordered online I got another eye exam and got the correct PD from the optometrist himself.
  • 39dollarglasses.com
I love ordering online eyeglasses which I first heard about many years ago from Clark when he told us about 39dollarglasses which I believe was before Zenni or any other. Though I guess now that price is high with all these competitors-(aint competition great!)and they have been slow to add more styles,I know I can receive them in a week usually & customer service is at least breathing! I tried Zenni though too slow for me though great selection but never did respond to any inquiry. However for these prices I can live with that. It's amazing that not only are the prices great but the quality of these products are much better than retail stores--obviously overhead is a factor and it's been unbelievable savings for my family. In the past I might pay $400+ due to my scrip. and I have 2 kids who lose lots of glasses and it's a beautiful thing! For the poster who worries about adjustments, lens falling out, etc. go to the dollar store and get of screws, pads etc. As far as the PD measurement I've never had that included on my scrip but most websites have the PD ruler and instructions to print out or just search google. The key to the whole thing is when the laws were changed that requires releasing a patients scrip. then Clark telling us about that.I can't wait to explore these new vendors!
  • Zenni and anti-glare coating
First of all, I love Zenni and I have a bunch of glasses from them. When I had a problem once, I was able to call them during their posted hours and I spoke to someone in about 10-15 mins. I get compliments on my glasses all the time as they have a bunch of really stylish frames.

As for problems with the anti-glare coating, make sure you're not using pre-moistened wipes to clean your glasses. I used them for years and one day my eye doctor told me that the alcohol strips away the finish.
  • Regarding Pupillary Distance. This is for Shel. Whoever is examining your eyes should give you your pupillary distance(PD) measurement. My current optometrist didn't give it to me, so I called back to the previous eye exam place to get it. My guess is, they don't want you to have it because this is the last pice of the puzzle to prevent you from going out on your own to buy them i.e online.
  • Mack
I got some from Zenni as well. I paid a whole $21.95 which included magnetic clip on sunglasses. I'm not into the fancy-high dollar glasses, but I've paid $180 for a comparable pair before. I bought another pair ($11.95 to the door)from another online retailer to keep in the house for TV viewing. I plan to buy two other pairs: one to keep in my wife's car and the other to keep upstairs for TV viewing. What a deal!!!
  • I Love My Glasses!!!
I bought my glasses from Zenni about 10 months ago & I absolutely love them! They are no rim, non-glare, transition, no line bifocals that cost me $95 and I waited 4 weeks to get them. They're perfect! I also bought my 8 yr old granddaughter a pair & she loves hers too. Many people have asked me about my glasses & I have recommended Zenni Optical to every one of them. I have no complaints whatsoever!
  • Pupillary Distance
How do you get the pupillary distance measurement to submit the order online? My eye dr 'doesn't do that. It's done by whoever makes the glasses for you' is what I was told. Do I have to buy a $400 pair of glasses first to get someone to give me my pupillary distance so I can buy some reasonably priced glasses online? Help!
  • GlassesFair.com
Yes, there are many online prescription eyeglass companies. I just bought a pair from GlassesFair.com and ALL their glasses are $24.99 or less. They are great and what a deal!
  • GLASSES UNLIMITED
I Agree with Samantha, on the styles, and the options, but most of all THEYE ARE ALL ONE PRICE.
  • GLASSES UNLIMITED
thanks clark for recommending this site. i love the styles they have on glasses unlimited.com. there are so many options and such gr8 prices!!
  • Zenni optical is the best, I bought walmart glass lens. I dropped them broke one they would not make me one single lens, and it was a week after I got them. Went to zenni I bought four pairs, I loose them, jet ski, boating, sports, scrath them throw them away. Its wonderful.

You cannot beat the price and thousands of frames to choose from.

$400 for one pair verses 16 pairs at Zenni, I did the math for you about any way.
  • Great Store Glasses Unlimited
The Best, Just the best, I have purchased a few pairs from www.glassesunlimited.com they are perfect, they came quick, and they have reps to talk to lateand they are really nice.
  • recommended
I can't recommend Zenni highly enough. You will wait 3 weeks to get your order, but when you can get 2 pair of glasses for under $40 shipped to your home, who cares?? Like another poster, I had an issue with the screw on one of the lenses. I tightened it myself and never had another issue. The same frames at my local shop were $295....non-reflective lens coating was $60 by itself..... and I got TWO PAIR for just under $40. Just awesome!!
  • Zenni
Been using Zenni for about 3 years now and love them. Had to move into progressive lenses this year and the doctors office was going to charge me around $265 with insurance. Just got my new specs from Zenni on Friday and only paid $66 and they work great.
  • Lens Fallout
    Hi
The Quality was great,But when I open the package and put the glasses on the right lens fell out due to loose screw.
I called customer no service and was told that a replacement screw was to be shipped. After several calls to customer no service and 2 weeks later the replacement screw arrived. The customer service group was very 0rnery
and acted as if it was my fault that
thier quality control was bad. I would look to other sites in the future.
  • Zenni RAWKS!
My son and I are both cursed with terrible vision and I've been ordering from Zenni for a year now. He just got his first glasses prescription this past spring and was concerned that he'd "look like a geek." so to make it more fun, we went to Zenni and ordered a snazzy pair of prescription shades for him. Suddenly, having to wear glasses didn't seem so bad. I could never have done that paying full price elsewhere.
  • GlassesUnlimited
Have ordered 6 pairs of glasses for myself and daughter through GlassesUnlimited and its sister company Goggles4U. Ordered the slightly thinner lenses the first time, and realized I could save $30 by ordering the standard lens. I compared the standard lens to the so called "high index" lenses from Stein Optical and they were about the same thickness. The only difference was I paid an extra $100 for those lenses. For $15 shipped, you can't go wrong.
  • Zenni
I bought a pair of glasses from Zenni
($ 12.95 which included shipping). They were exactly as ordered. Good quality. I also made a mistake in my prescription which they caught. Highly recommend.
  • Satisfied
Zenni provided excellent glasses for myself and my grandson. Although the grandson was able to trash his as he did the high priced ones from the local eye doctor, and my first pair of prescription bi-focal sunglesses are being worn by a whale somewhere off the shore of Maui, I did not hesitate to re-order from Zenni and I'm very happy with the product.
  • Zenni
My sister told me about Zenni and I have purchased my last 2 pair of glasses from them. Love them...Love them. Took a couple of weeks to receive but I no problems with the vision. Why should I pay big prices when I can get the same thing from Zenni and pay little, little prices. My husband would not order from Zenni and just paid over $300 for glasses....I can do a lot with $300. I paid less than $100 and got 2 pair plus the shipping.
  • Zenni order
bi focals ordered and they were in perfect condition and looks great on my husband. Now ill order mine. Thanks Clark for telling us about this place.
  • Zenni Optical
Have ordered bifocals several times with no problems. If you want true designer frames, top, top quality, they are not. But if you are like me, and you want GOOD quality, GOOD looking glasses at a reasonable price, they are that. Had to call for help with broken frame, got live helpful person, and was able to order replacement parts a year later and fix them myself. I love Zenni. Dependable and good quality.
  • Zenni Optical
As much as I like the progressive rimless glasses for myself, they are terrific for children. It is impossible to get glasses for my 7yo daughter at Costco and very expensive at the Mall. Zenni gave me 2 pairs for her for less than half of the price at Costco or the Mall stores
  • No Kids Glasses
Too bad these new sites don't offer children's glasses like Zenni! I have been ordering my daughters off there for a while now.
  • Zenni Optical
I ordered my son's glasses last year for $120, he broke it within a month. We tried Zenni this year, we'd a great experience.See you again next year.
  • ZENNI OPTICAL
Been using Zenni for years now and never had a bad pair. The only problem is the learning curve for the sizing for your frames but fortunately had the size info inside the frame on an old pair of expensive glasses. Don't forget to look for that info. Go to Wal-mart for your PD. It doesn't change after you are an adult.
  • ZENNI OPTICAL
My husband & I have been using Zenni Optical since we first heard about it on your show & we've NEVER been disappointed. We love 'em!
  • Scratch coating
Well I paid over about $400 for my bifocals with Scratch/anti reflective from Pearl Vision, 2 years later it's peeling off. I know 2 years it when I should get them, but I can't afford them right now. So Zenni, here I come.
  • Zenni glasses
I order glasses in the summer i less then a week one of the temples broke. I sent an email to Zenni optical and no questions ask sent me new frames with a special screwdriver. I only had to take the lenses put them in the new frames.
  • Tried Zenni last month
I tried Zenni last month after hearing Clark talk about them. I got my order in about 8 business days and they are working great.
  • Zenni
I ordered the zenni glasses and started getting headaches. Had them checked at an optician's office and the lenses were reversed! Called zenni to complain and it's impossible to get a live person! Oh well, cheap experience!
  • Zenni glasses
GREAT DEAL! I'm wearing a pair of Zenni progressive lens glasses right now(spring hinged half frame style). Ordering was easy and I received delivery in 16 days. Total cost including shipping was $42. Zenni forwarded the USPS tracking number upon processing.
  • Contact Lens
where is the links for contacts lens and eye exam?
  • Zenni rocks!
My wife and I have both ordered over 20 pairs from Zennie over the past several years. We keep some in the car; at the office; extras around the house, etc. They are great. Only one pair was not great, but, with the price: who cares!
  • Give me a break!
I've placed 4-5 Zenni orders this year, and I've only received one defective frame. The rest work fine and I see no reason to overpay for frames or lenses locally. I did replace the nosepads with large, premium silicone pads from nosepadking.com; they're much more comfortable and durable. Slam Zenni all you wish; there is a huge market for inexpensive, basic eyeglasses out here.
  • Online Cheap China Frames and Lenses
The problem is when you need an adjustment, nose pad, screw, etc.etc. you can't drop by Zenni's office...Or when you get scratches or the TERRIBLE anti reflective coating or crappy scratch coating wears off and is peeling, I doubt that Zenni will replace the lenses for free like my optometrist does...the way I see it my optometrist spends a lot of time making sure my lenses match what she found in the exam room...The eyes lead the body...the last thing I want is an cheap, underperforming lens out in front...I would much rather have the best...or close to it...YOU GET WHAT YOU PAY FOR!!
  • Dunno'
I paid top dollar at a local optometrist and for the first time in years, after always shopping by price, I have glasses that are lightweight, fit comfortably, are not turning weird colors on the metal portions and I can go into the store whenever I want if an adjustment is needed.

If money ever becomes tight I may have to use the budget offering but if I can afford to pay more, the comfort obtained by buying superior quality frames and being held by the hand from start to finish is worth it.

It is so nice having a comfortable secure frame fit for the first time in many years.
  • Optical4Less
I've ordered my last 4 pairs of high index prescriptions online for only $60 each. No problem so far.
  • Zenni ROCKS
I've ordered three pairs of glasses. One time I put in the wrong size and customer service was great. Even if they weren't, for the price, I really don't care. I could mess up two orders a year, get my eyes examined at Sam's club once a year, and it's still cheaper than vision insurance.
  • On-Line Glasses
I've ordered glasses from Zenni Optical twice now. For $22, I got a durable pair of frames and sunshields that arrived promptly. I don't know if they're the most stylish frames available, but for saving about $200, I don't care if they're stylish or not! And, most importantly, the prescription lenses were right on target. I can see perfectly with the Zenni frames.
  • Zenni Optical
Love them! I wear progressive trifocals - normally $400+. Got 2 pair at Zenni for $115 including shipping & they are perfect!
  • lol@ "that don't skimp on style"
