Oct 07, 2009 -- More discounting coming at grocery stores, warehouse clubs

MONEY-SAVING MOMENT: You've probably heard how restaurants at all price points are dropping their prices. But what's been under-reported is a similar trend happening at the grocery register.

The Bureau of Labor Statistics has figures showing prices have been declining every month at grocery stores since the fall of last year.

Supermarket chains have had to struggle to get people to keep spending. At first, they convinced people to switch to store brands. But now the grocery chains are struggling as people trade over to cheaper stores like Wal-Mart and Aldi!

This means that the grocery heavyweights like Kroger and Safeway -- and all their various brands across the country -- will have to step it up yet again with more aggressive discounting. Even the warehouse clubs are complaining that they're losing business too in the grocery aisle to the likes of Wal-Mart and Aldi.

Speaking of warehouse clubs, you'll see more clearance merchandise than ever this year at Costco, BJ's and Sam's Club. Here's a quick guide to knowing what's on discount where:

• BJ's will clearly tell you on the label when they mark down.

• At Sam's Club, look for anything that ends in a penny -- such as 81 cents or $24.41 -- or anything marked with a "C" for clearance.

• At Costco, look for anything that ends in 97 cents. Also, price tags with an asterisk means an item will not be reordered. In the latter case, wait until the price ends in a 97 and then buy.

What others are saying

  • BOGO
At Kroger and Food Lion in Virginia, if the item is BOGO, you only have to buy one and it is half the BOGO price!
  • BOGO @ PUBLIX
    KEN
If you have Breyer's ice cream @ Publix and there is a BOGO, the reg. price for one is 4.99= 2/$4.99 which makes it $2.49 each. How is that more? It's a good deal. Anytime you get 2/price of one, it's good. I worked as a cashier for them for 9 years. This is how it works. Unlike some stores in the area where if there is a BOGO, you are required to purchase 2 of the same item to get the price. Not so at Publix.
  • The Grocery Game
I too am a member of Costco and always spend a lot of money and don't really see much savings. A friend told me about the grocery game - www.thegrocerygame.com - there is a small fee but from July 19-Aug23 - I spent $1057.28 on groceries and saved $1497.38 - you must clip coupons out of the Sunday paper and it takes a few weeks to accumulate your coupons - the fee ($10 the first store and $5.00 each additional store, every 8 weeks is completely worth it) and saves a lot of time ~ hope this helps
  • SAVINGS?
AS A MEMBER OF SAMS AND BJS, I HAVE FOUND THAT MANY OF THE REGULAR GROCERY STORES ARE LESS EXPENSIVE FOR EACH ITEM AND ONE DOES NOT HAVE TO BUY TEN TIMES MORE THAN ONE NEEDS TO GET A DESIRED PRODUCT.
  • Saving money
It's interesting how Clark has offered suggestions on saving money and after reading some of the comments, people respond with political and religeous comments. What does one have to do with the othe? If you can save money for your family, this should be what you are concerned with.
  • Store Savings tip
I wish we had more choice...we have local stores, Walmart and Target. I find bargains by shopping in bulk in a larger city and storing needed items (Winco and Costco). Thank you for the hint I will look for mark downs at Costco now.
  • Costco
Make sure you compare apples to apples on prices. Costco's milk does not use the growth hormone but other stores milk does!
  • Walmart/Costco, etc.
I too am nowhere near Publix, Kroger, or Safeway (we used to have Safeway). I choose Walmart because they honor the ads of every store and will accept coupons. I can make one trip to get all shopping done; not driving all over town. I know many people don't want to shop at Walmart because of their labor practices, but EVERY employer has its problems. If we shopped based upon labor practices we'd never buy anything; China (not know for the best labor practices) manufactures over 50% of our goods; what would be left to buy?
  • Sams Club
Sams is a high volume store meaning anything else that does not sell well will be quickly be replaced by a high volume item. I have had several problems with our local Sams Club and their reason for not replacing some items was it is a seasonal item When my corporate card expires we will go across the street to BJ's
  • Costco
My experience at Costco has taught me a very important lesson. If you see a seasonal item that you really want, buy it. If you wait, you may save 100% on the price (and end up without the desired item.)
  • Costco and Aladi/Walmart
I am executive memeber at Costco. I find prices at Aladi and Walmart much cheaper. Milk in Aladi is $1.49 and at Walmart is $1.98 and in Costco is more than $2. Costco is jacking price to get 2% rebate which still cannot match these discount stores. Sometime Vitamin D milk at Aladi is $.99c. Show wisely in these bad times and not for 2% rebate.
  • Lower prices to consumer NOT SO
Everytime I go into Wal-Mart their grocery prices jump anywhere from 1,2 pennies per item to dollars, 1 example is Almond Bark (to make candy) last year it was 1.00 same year jumped to 1.50 this year 2.56(outrageous) Krogers brand cookie last Wednesday almost all their cookies were 1.09 yesterday 1.19 and I could list plenty of items especially Wal-Mart they are getting to be big RIPOFFS, people are so in the habit of "WALLY WORLD" I for one am tired of all their "MADE IN CHINA" products. And their "STORE BRANDS" that you almost don't have a choice to by a NAME BRAND product if you want to.
  • Clark's Money sav.....walmart, Costco...
I couldn't resist commenting after reading the other comments. First, Walmart carries the same items (from China) that all the other stores do, so reasoning to not shop at Walmart based upon "getting the gun pointed back at us" is ludicris. Everyone needs to watch prices on their regular items purchased whereever that may be. I live 1.5 hrs from Costco and have a printed list of items I buy and use from Costco. I do an quick inventory of what I need (or don't need) and hit Costco with my coupons that apply and done for 3 months. Costco, from last I heard marks up their items only a certain percent and the quality(which goes a long way) makes a big difference. So don't shop for just "cheap" shop for price and quality and you'll be better in the long run. And, don't forget to remember, Walmart isn't the evil store, as they carry the same imported items all stores carry. It is our govts. fault for destroying and continuing to destroy America and its economic strength.
  • grocery bill
All you cheapskates that buy a bunch of groceries and pay nothing...did you know your government wastes so much money on unwanted wars and useless weapons? All the right winger talk show hosts beat their heads against the wall saying "big government" and "tax payers money" without giving any credit to the hard working minimum wage earners.
  • Warehouse
I too, have noticed Wal-Mart has either jacked up prices, cut quantity, or both, and sometimes use deceptive "per quantity" tags. They've changed -- and so have I.
  • BOGO with coupons
I love to save $$$. I found that Publix, Krogers and Ingles BOGO are good. But even better if you clip coupons too and watch the ads. Check out the Sunday paper for coupons. Get the ads and coupons and spend a little more time clipping and comparing. At Publix if you only want one, it's half price and a coupon for .50 cents off is doubled ($1.00 savings). In many cases I have gotten the item for only a few cents and sometimes, even FREE. I once save $64 dollars on a $67 dollar grocery bill with a planned shopping strategy and COUPONS. Even the cashier was astonished!

One month, I saved all of my coupon and store savings money. At the end I had accumulated almost $200. On average I save about $30-50 on a trip to the store.

    It works! Try it!
  • Aldi
Aldi gives Wal-Mart a run for their money. I save about 40% on my food bill by shopping there. Have you noticed how Wal-Mart only seems to carry just one or two brands of any one item anymore
    same for Sams.
The brands are the name brand and cost more than the generic/store brands they used to carry.
  • Costco for Healthier Choices
We buy more organic foods and have found that Costco has a wider selection and fresher produce for the items we purchase. I also found a natural foods warehouse store in Atlanta that offers some of the same products that Whole Foods does with cost savings. Sometimes we do buy Kroger and Wal-Mart products based on individual items and cost.
  • publix bogo
You don't have to buy two to get the cheaper price at Publix! BOGO really means half price for as many as you want to buy, whether 1,2,3,4. Some are limited to a maximum number
  • Mexican groceries
Shop at the supermercardo. I don't care if I'm the only Anglo. Its a lot cheaper. Its also "mama and papasito" if you care about that vs. the corporate behemoths.
  • Re: Publix BOGO
Scott, I compare prices. When I get Publix's weekly ads in the mail, I check the prices of their BOGO offers. Nine times out of ten, the price is very good, a good savings over other stores' prices, even Walmart's. I always check the prices before I buy, and I only buy things I really need.
  • GroceryFreak.com
I get much better prices on just about everything I purchase than shopping at Wal-Mart or Aldi. The truth is with sale prices matched up with coupons and the doubling policies of certain store you can shop for a family of four for $50 per week or less.
  • PUBLIX BOGO
    Sorry to hit home Ken.....

Take current Publix BOGO deal for Breyers Ice Cream (48-oz) for $4.99. That means we pay $4.99 for two. Right?

You can frequently find same size of Breyers Ice Cream other places for $2.50 / $3.00 each.

That's why I say the BOGO price is usually double price you can find elsewhere.

Shopping might be a pleasure, but where's the deal in that?
  • Mom and Pops
Keep small business alive. Recently a small produce/meat market opened in my area. Their prices are cheaper than any grocery store and the products are local and fresh. After buying 2 N.Y. strips for the price I pay for 1 at Publix, I will never buy my meat elsewhere. Also the produce is amazing. Publix and target have good produce, but the prices are ridiculos. Please shop at your local mom and pops, Dont let corprate america make a shopping choices for us.
  • Publix, Costco, Sams, Walmart, Target, Kroger
Publix does not double the price on a BOGO - these are offers that they are taking advantage of from the MFG's

Walmart takes the same advantage but will instead of a BOGO offer will drop a few cents off for a longer period of time

Kroger will stick it to you on items that are not their "deals" particularly if you don't use their loyalty card

Target will be cheaper on some and much higher on other item

Costco might cost more than Sams... but is much cleaner in my opinon

Haven't tried Aldi but once - didn't care for the store brand name only
    selection

What works... don't buy things you don't need because you have a coupon or they are on sale. Double up on what you do need when it is on sale and search for coupons for it to maximise the benefit

Listen to CLARK EVERY DAY! ;-)
  • Grocery Costs
I have a BJ's membership, and it saves me a LOT of money. Not only do they offer BOGO deals on such needs as dishwasher detergent, not only do they send out store coupons, but they also accept manufacturers' coupons -- even a store coupon and manufacturer's coupon for the same time. Gas is a great deal there, too. I buy SOME things at Walmart -- a few things which are the lowest price -- and I also like to buy the BOGO specials at Ingles and Publix. I have a big family and all this saves us a LOT of money.
  • Publix BOGO
Scott, I work For Publix and I can assure you that prices are not marked up before they go "Buy on get one Free". Plain and simple they are great deals.
  • Publix BOGO
Publix regularly has buy one get one free offers. But if you notice the fine print regarding the touted savings, the item is usually priced twice as high as normally can be found elsewhere.

I don't find that to be too much of a deal.
  • Aldi
Aldi has the best deals around. Their selection is limited but for the most part they have everyone beat. Publix often offers buy one get one free which are good deals if you use the item. The bottom line is that you have to shop around and compare.
  • Buy Big at the Discount Stores
I find Sams to only be s deal when I need to buy in bulk. Often I find myself spending $7-12 on a bulk item of something when I really want a much smaller size. Walmart usually is the best place for a deal on an item. (any size) But you have to stomach the poor service, crowded isles, and inconsiderate shoppers and cashiers. I do feel Sams is good for bulk purchases on name brand items. But don't expect to get out the door cheap.
  • this tip stinks
Come on Clark this tip stinks. I don't even have a Kroger or Safeway near me, Aldis are showing up and they stink.

I am a member of Sams club and to tell you the truth the deals aren't all that good. Especially on food, even the higher quanties can be beat with coupons or sales at say Publix. Even during normal times I have seen cheaper prices at Walmart then at Sams.

Unless of course I want some nasty ground beef from Cargil, then yeah Sams has you covered there. Sams\Walmart just has nasty meat.
  • grocery stores
I have found Walmart to be higher on some items than other stores. You need to watch. Plus there produce smells like mildew a lot of the time and no mater how cheap it is I am not eating it. The same is true with store brand names, like HEB, Walmart, even Costco, etc. if it does not taste good - I am not eating it. I have found there are very few store brands I really like. And I do try new items all the time.
We only have really two store her in Texas and one HEB is going down the tubes in my area. They have discontinue almost everything I like.. So I do shop at Costco, Whole foods but it is about a 25 mile trip to get to them.
And as for as store coupons - they never have a coupon for the things I use. I rarely use anything out of a can or package, besides rice, noodles, beans, and some personal care items.... I try to eat fresh.
In Texas they just open a store called Sprouts and so far there produce has been great./meats, too.
  • Reasses Where you Shop
I agree that WalMart has gone up on their store brands since they started with new packaging initiative. They are not consistently the low price leader. It's hard to beat the super center variety though.

Costco's prices are not necessarily low. Advantage of wholesale clubs appears to be with bulk grocery purchases for large families and potential elimination of successive grocery store trips. Once you buy a grocery item by the case, it should last you longer than normal quantity purchase. Mix and match Costco coupons released middle of the month (see membership desk) to obtain maximum savings. Overall, for the price of membership, they are not doing us any big favors!

Watch weekly sales circulars, match with coupons, and shop at Kroger to get double savings assuming store brands are still not more thrifty. Loyal shoppers also benefit from gas discounts which sweetens the deal.

Other than the pleasant shopping experience, Publix is a rip-off all the way around. Be very selective what you buy there, and expect to pay a premium.

It is hard to beat ALDI's everyday prices. While variety and selection are slim, for staples, you can't usually beat the price. And their brand guarantee is hard to resist.
  • Wal-Mart?
Even though Wal-Mart may be cheaper than Kroger, it'll never get my business because I was told that it, and its HUGE brother Sam's Club, don't want my business because I'm the wrong religion.
  • Grocery prices
We were just at Walmart. What a shocker in checking their prices. For example their 'private Label' canned goods have gone up about 40% in the last few weeks.
Well they have to go up so they can go down???
  • Use Coupons
If you use coupons you don't have to go to any discount store. I shop at Kroger and save 50% or more than what I would at WalMart. WM doesn't double coupons so I save at Kroger right from the start. I haven't been to Wm in over 3 yrs and don't plan on going back.
  • Costco not always a good deal
I used to assume everything was cheaper at Costco than the grocery store, until I counted the oranges in a box at Costco. Turned out Naval oranges at 50 cents each were cheaper at Wal-Mart than Costco.
  • BJ's expensive. Besides chicken and gas I get nothing there. 0.89 cents per pound.
