Oct 02, 2009 -- Your risk of identity theft revealed online

The Identity Theft Resource Center has partnered with MyIDScore.com for a new online test that predicts your risk of having your identity stolen.

Simply go to MyIDScore.com and click the "Check My ID Score" banner. You'll be asked to enter your name, home address, phone number, Social Security number and other identifying info.

It's entirely up to you if you choose to give your Social Security number. It is not required, but tends to give a more accurate reading of your risk level.

Clark chose to enter his Social because he has already frozen his credit. The results? The consumer champ scored a 424 on a scale with 1 being the lowest and 1,000 being the highest. Scores of 500 or more indicate you are in greater danger of having your identity stolen. If you score a 750 or above, you are a sitting duck!

Our team members also ran checks on themselves. Producer Joel scored a 183. Executive producer Christa scored a 271. But the lowest score of all went to senior producer Kim, who scored an 85 without her Social and a more accurate 105 when she did enter her Social.

If you are in the danger zone above 750, Clark recommends going the next step and freezing your credit to prevent economic identity theft.

What others are saying

  • myidscore.com
They couldn't identify me without my SS. I entered my SS and they still couldn't identify me. I guess you can't get any better than that! I consider this a yeah!
  • myidscore.com
I had to use my maiden name also, and I've been married over 10 years. Great service!
  • myidscore.com
Worked great for me. Don't know why others are having such trouble.

    You rock Clark!
  • my id score
    I went to the site,tried twice,and was told they can't verify my id,including ss#.Is this a problem?
  • GREAT NEWS
Site didn't work until I entered my maiden name then worked great for both spouse and my own.. Both under 300 and happy.
  • myidtheft
worked great for my & my wife. they couldn't find my 8 y/o daughter which is not a surprise as she has no credit history. I suggest trying again
  • WHY HAVE A COMMENTS SECTION?
READ THE COMMENTS !!! THIS SITE IS NOT WORKING AND I USED MY SS#. I EVEN WROTE THEM A NOTE WITH NO RESPONSE.
  • site won't work
Site would not progress past first page, whether or not I entered my SS number (which I was reluctant to do but finally gave in.) Didn't matter - never could get past page 1
  • Great ID theft resource

  • ID Score
I tried to enter all my information with SSN and it said they could not help me. Everything was correct, I have a lot of credit and good credit. Is this a scam??
  • MyIDScore.com
Can't identify me without SSN. Not comfortable providing SSN on net to an entity I know nothing about, even with Clark's approval.
  • MyId
Couldn't verify my information without my SS and then with it. That could be good or bad.
  • 225 score
Site works great!! I'm in the Low category and glad to know it. Thanks Clark.
  • My ID score
Site doesn't work...message is "can't verfiy identity" and defaults to asking for my SSN, which I won't give. Our other identifying info has not changed for 15 years. Not a good use of time
  • My Id Score
Couldn't find me either, with or without my SS#? should I be worry? don't do it. it looks like a scam.
  • myidscore.com
None of the questions asked had anything to do with me, but it 'recognized' me and gave me a score of 430. Hmmm - are you sure this is not a site to just collect information? I opted out - hope that works.
  • MyIDScore.com
    Thanks Clark! You're awesome!!
  • Score
Scored a 340. No problems at all. Very easy and helpful to use. Information it had on me was completely accurate. Thank you so much Clark!
  • MyIDScore
Why bother putting out worthless info? This site does not work as confirmed by all the comments submitted. Just a big joke is gues, are may be that they are data-mining the info from folks trying to log on? Shame on Clark Howard!!
  • myidscore
Useless site- did not recognize me with my social and all proper indentifying info after 2 tries
  • MyIDScore
When I went in it couldn't give me a score because it "couldn't identify me" even though it knew where I had lived in the past.
  • Opting out
I clicked on the opt-out instructions before putting in my info.

It basically says email myidscore-optout@idanalytics.com. Put "out out" in subj line and provide your name, address, and phone# but NOT your SSN.

For more details, just go back to the site. On the Step 1 (where you input all your info), click the opt-out link off to the right-hand side.

In the end, it didn't even matter for me. I couldn't get verified w/o my SSN (and didn't try it with).
  • My identity was not recognized
Why isn't my identity recognized? Am I in jepardy?
  • Can't be identified
I did put in my SS# after the first couple of tries and still could not be identified. Perhaps they need to take a look at the site for problems.
  • Why SS
Tried three times but wouldn't put in SS#. Apparently, I too don't exist without my private info. Think I'll take my chances.
  • complaints
    boo hoo...
  • unworkability of this site
I guess I don't exist without my SS#!! I gave ALL info except that and did it twice to make sure there were no typos. I have had the same name for 45 years, lived in the same place and had same phone for 35. I don't like a situation where I'm told I don't have to provide private info, then semi-forced to do so in order to get what was offered!
  • ID Score
Sweet!! I scored a 72 with SSN and a freeze on my CBR.
  • idscore
tried 5 times - with SSN and without SSN - could not get verified!!!!!!! A total waste of my time! Thanks, Clark!
  • My ID Score
Scored a 74, when entering my SSN.
  • AARP published this Website too. They wouldn't send pensioners to dicey places.
Drop the paranoia. My score 389
  • Can't verify
I tried it 4 times and it could not verify me - even with my SSN.
  • I tried it twice without using my SSN and it couldn't verify. Apparently without my SSN I don't exist. I'll be darned if I'll give out my SSN to some site I know nothing about. What a joke!
  • Bogus Verification
I failed verification twice, apparently because I failed to 'match up' correctly with the information required. Admittedly, some of the verification info required me to think back several decades, it was nonetheless not correct, as far as being a valid test of ID verification. That said, I'll put my faith elsewhere other than some 'for profit' information gathering website. Sorry Clark.
  • Score
I came up with a 413. Had to try it twice as the first time had totally wrong info and it could not verify. Second time was true with some misspellings. Interesting results.
  • ID Theft Site
I entered the site without using my SSN and it gave me a score of 250. The info I gave can be found in other places anyway..................
  • Unable to opt out
AFTER getting my 208 score, there was NO WAY to get back to opt out. Also, it listed a city I NEVER lived in, but State Farm had wrongly put that city on my credit report, so I had to select it in order to get my report. Now I'm concerned about this garbage. Is it a FRAUD or SCAM?
  • Is My ID Score legit?
Got my score fast: 211. But when I tried to opt-out (of the PII info being used to help them improve their service), the email page that popped up was one that was attempting to create a new email account for me. I declined by dumping the page and not following through. However, now I am concerned that this whole exercise might be a scam. Clarke, will you research this site better and tell us in your next newsletter what you found out about the integity of MyIDScore.com? Thanks.
  • Identy Theft that flys below the radar
30-years ago I had vision insurance with a firm out of San Diego, Ca. A recent vist to my eye Doctor accidently uncovered an identy theft in process with my social number involving the above. The ID theft is using my number in the Medicad program w/ the LA County Family Health unit. I filed a complaint with three units & with the medicare unit being primary. A month later I was advised by the Medicare investigator the use of my number was a mistake. Ho Ho! I subscribe to an Identity theft program, they advised me the charges made by the medicade program fly under the radar and they were unable to detect this theft in process. It has been rsolved, hopefuly, however we continue to check the Insurance Company I was oncea customer of. If documentation is necessary for the above please advise. M
  • Identity Theft
Although both my husband and I scored in the low 200's re MyIDScore.com, our checking acct.# was recently used by someone who had his own checks made and tried passing 4 of them. I caught the first check immed. by downloading my quicken acct and no funds were lost although I had to close that acct. and open another with all the hassles involved in changing my acct# with those with whom we do business. The fellow who did this made up a fake Atlanta construction company with a fake routing # and fake bank name. His first check was to "Postmaster" so I think this makes it a federal case.
  • Interpreting this site's responses correctly
If it can't find you or thinks you don't exist then that is good thing. If you have a low score that is a good thing. If you have a high score then you are at risk with lots of your personal data available on the web. Not being found demonstrates that you don't have any personal info easily available for thieves to use. Hope you understand my explanation.
  • There's no cure for stupid!
  • I dunno...
Got rid of home phone to stop bill collectors from calling about debts from my in-laws. I didn't want to give my phone number as is may wind up on credit report. I'd have to pay another $15 to change it again to stop the "crank calls". Just freeze the credit or have it bad enough that no one would finance anyways. Cash is always king.
  • ID Score
First time without giving SSN gave me a score of 283
  • SITE DID NOT WORK
  • ID SCORE
Is this a scam, after putting in different info, it keeps blocking you out....maybe they are after my info (clark needs to double check this out) Thanks goodness I have "LIFELOCK"
  • Score
Interesting... 330 when I used my address with no Apt # and then a 300 when I included the Apt # (both times I had to enter my ssn to get it to work).
  • Verification
The site could not verify my identification without the SSN. I tried it several times. I decided not to give my SSN. I am wondering if this site is legit.
  • My ID score
I tried several times and it couldn't identify me and that I may have entered incorrect info. I double checked each time and all info was correct. Frustrating experience!!
  • works for dead people also
I entered the info for a relative who died 3 1/2 years ago. She got a score of 310. I'm not sure I trust this system.
  • Worked for me
Well, this was interesting! I scored 206 w/SS#, and 265 without. Wonder why I'm at a lower risk WITH my SS than without it.
  • Score
My score was 310 1st try without SN
  • Check My ID Score
Couldn't find me either, even with my SS#
  • WORTHLESS SCORE
...my experian credit score is 840....now I am told that only myfico counts.....and the ID THEFT SCORE did not even work for me...the heck with it....life goes on.....
  • Worked fine for me.
Scored 153. Went through immediately with my SSN. Credit frozen for a year. Hope it's right.
  • Worked fine
Got a 269 with SS#. Seems useful to me.
  • ID THEFT SCORE
Get this...they canot even identify me, even with a credit score in the 800s...great...totally great...
  • Hope THIS isn't a scam!
What do you know? Just like many others who commented, it couldn't find me either. Scary, since I went back in and provided my SS# the second time around!
  • THAT THEFT SCORER
...get this..I use so little credit...even with $400,000 limits on my credit cards...that they could not score me at all! Cool..very cool....
  • ID Theft Score
Total waste of time. The app would not identify me. My credit score is high enough to make lenders drool and I've lived in only 2 places for the last 25 years.
  • IDScore
I tried twice .. each time the site said my time lapsed .. In other words .. I did not click 'enter' fast enough.. BULL!!!!!!!!!
I heard Clark on the air last week talking about this.. but forget to do it until now.. Yes .. what's up????
  • ID Risk
I'd like to know what are the factors that go into calculating scores.
  • ID Score
This was a total waste of time. I have a credit score of 780, age is over 65 and I have had credit for over 40 years. Lived in the same house 30 years, been in the same town all my life. This exercise is a piece of junk. My answer was I couldn't be identified. Baloney
  • ID Risk
Service could not give me a reading on my risk. I chose not to enter my SSN. Why?
  • ID risk
this is what I received after giving all my ID and SS#
Unfortunately, we could not independently verify your identity based on the information provided either because some information is missing, some information may have been filled out in error, or we do not recognize you because of limited credit activity. To protect this site from misuse, we can only provide My ID Scores to users we can verify. Please accept our regrets
  • Identity theft score
Clark, thanks so much. My score was 345 and I, like James, would like to know how to make my score even lower than it. I always watch your show and I certainly trust you.
  • tried to use site for credit risk
I tried 3 times to have my credit risk. It would not work. Said maybe I didn't have enough credit use. Not true. I have many credit cards & own a house that I have refinanced three in the last 3 years.
  • didn't work
Tried three times (one with SSN) and they couldn't identify me!
  • NoGo!
This didn't work after two tries and all correct info; hope Clark is reading these comments
  • id theft
Why worry about ID theft when the people who know all about you are already stealing from you every day!

The banks, with more schemes than a Phildelphia lawyer defending a Las Vegas hooker in a Kansas court
  • ID Score
If you can't trust something Clark Howard recommends, then you may as well lock yourself in a bulletproof room. I can count the number of people I trust on the fingers of one hand, and Clark is one of them.
  • Risk of Identify Theth
There should be a question on whether a credit freeze is in place.
  • ID Score
What's the deal with this? I got the same 'we can't identify you' result.
I gave accurately all the information they requested minus a SSN and I answered the multiple choice identification questions accurately. They said they couldn't identify me and that there might be a mistake in the information. So I tried a second time. This time they told me I was allowed to do this this only twice every l4 days so they could not process my request. I tried one more time just in case... Same message.
  • ID score
Neat service. I got a 284 with my SS#. I wish they would give some better advice on how to lower the score but I suppose the information is available with a simple Google search.
  • MyIDScore
I just did it with out my SS No. and had
NO problems. My score was 290.
  • Check my ID score
They gave me my score without my SS but when I went to check with my SS they could not ID me or my wife?????????
  • Lower score with SS
My score went from 360 to 101 when adding SS#. Interesting.
  • Why Do This!!
With all the concerns of ID theft, why would anyone want to send their SS number to this organization to find out they are at risk or not. If you would do it, you ARE at risk!!
  • ID Score
Just ran mine-scored a 40. My wife and I are both members of "LifeLock", an ID anti-theft service.
  • ID Score
Tried to enter my information without my SS# several times- Said it was not enough information to identify - Makes me thinks it is a - SCAM!
  • Re: ID Scores
Tried entering my info twice w/o my social. They said they couldn't identify me.
  • ID score
refused to give me a score without SS#-said they couldn't identify me!
  • My id score
I didn't get anything from the web-site. But, I know my credit score is 800.
  • Interesting but may be a false security for people?
I ran myself and a couple of family members to see what came up.

    1. For my wife and I, we came up low risk at 314 and 218. But, we have actually been victims of an identity theft. In 1998, an apartment manager and her side kick/low end grounds keeper-man were engaging in identity theft at the complex we lived at. They were taking the actual rental applications, making copies of them, and then at their leisure using the information to gain access to the tenant’s finances, personal life, conducting stalking behavior in some cases. The best we could do is get them fired, but it took us a year to do that by hiring a private investigator, attorney and installing hidden cameras in our unit. The scary part is, these two still have factual actual information on us, and now we have to keep a constant vigil on them for the rest of our lives.
    2. When we ran a close relative who was also a victim of these two, but lived at another location (we figure they got her address off of our rental application as next of kin) she came up as not being able to be processed by MyIDScoredot.com at all! In her case her mail was stolen right out of the mail box, her check washed that she had written to pay her monthly bills, and cashed in other places like ATMS, Check Cashing places, bars as if she wrote them out to cash. She was stung for over $6,000 dollars in funds removed from her bank accounts!
  • Mega Banks vs. small Community Banks,
I know Clark always slams the Mega Banks but when a Bank closes, it is usually one of the little, friendly but broke banks. It seems to me, funds are safer in the Mega banks.
  • theycouldnt id me???maybe Idont exist!!
  • ID Score
Well, I tried twice to enter my info to get my score (without my SS#). They said they couldn't identify me.
  • Info + SSN = Lower score?
Weird. I got 324 without my SSN and 143 with. I wonder what that extra piece of info did to lower my score by over half?
  • Credit freeze
Be aware that once you do freeze your credit it becomes a real hassle to open up any new account from a credit card to Satellite TV service
  • risk of Identity theft
This is a drop in the bucket approach to a much larger problem. You could be a number 16 and still have your identity stolen for financial. But what about medical fraud, DMV fraud, or having your social security number compromised? ...forget this. I'm using prepaid legal- identity protection, because I expect my number is already out there and I want someone to FIX the problem when it happens and immediately.
  • FTC Former Head
The retired head of the FTC is named Chuck Swindle???
  • I agree with Another Old Guy
    "Who knows?
Wouldn't it be interesting if everyone found out a few months down the road, that myidscore.com was a front for ID thieves?" I'm always worried about that sort of stuff too. I bet that we would have the lowest scores on this one.
  • I came in at 215 w/ the ss #
  • Low for me
My score was 136. I have had my credit frozen for a while.
  • My ID credit score
Who checked out if this site is bogus?
Is it not dangerous to put one's social
security # out to a site that would be
making one an open sitting duck? Sounds
fishy to me...who checks the fox house?
  • Could not verify me either
My credit is frozen, so I'm used to not being able to get a credit score. Only thing I can think of is "limited credit activity" I'm debt-free.
  • Who knows?
Wouldn't it be interesting if everyone found out a few months down the road, that myidscore.com was a front for ID thieves?
  • ID Theft
I was amazed at info they had on me. My score was 171....on your recommendation I have had my credit frozen for over 2 years.
  • Coolest tip all week!
I checked my score and had no problems, very fast response time. Turns out my score is 244. I'll be checking back quarterly! Thanks Clark and MyIDScore.com!
  • could not verify me
glad that I wasn't the only one that the website could not verify. I also included my birthdate and SSAN----it came back that it could not verify me.
  • idscore
entered all the info including ssn and said it couldn't give me any info, not enough info
  • Response from MyIDScore.com
Response from MyIDScore.com: To protect the privacy and security of consumers, MyIDScore.com only provides scores to individuals we can independently verify. We put this security protection in place to prevent fraudsters from trying to gain access to other consumers’ My ID Scores. We are sorry that we were unable to verify you based on the answers you gave. We recommend that you try visiting the site again in a couple of weeks as the validation questions will change.
