Oct 01, 2009 -- Kindle to be a hot holiday electronics item despite price
The Kindle is poised to be one of the hottest electronics item this holiday season. However, this e-reader from Amazon is unusually expensive for a Christmas item at $300-$500 depending on which version you get. The experience is so similar to reading a book and there's almost no eye fatigue. The Amazon people came up with a brilliant interface to download books wirelessly.
A cheaper alternative from Asus will be available in early 2010 for those on a budget. Asus has a color e-reader that folds just like a book that is expected to cost around $160, according to the Sunday Times of London.
Many of the newer e-readers will allow you to download books for free that are in the public domain. It's like having your own library in your hand!

I don't know if you've visited Amazon.com lately, but the Kindle 2 is now going for $259! I've also seen used models on eBay for under $200. Many publishing houses are taking note of the growing popularity, and it was a recent topic at my WordWeavers meeting. Writers are excited about the potential for expanding the eBook market! Unfortunately, authors are also upset that Kindle 2 offers free audio of all their books, without consideration to the copy-rights on audio books. Probably a story in there somewhere!
Books are sensory
I must be showing my age, but an electronic reading device will never have the same sensory value as an old fashioned book!
Sony has a nice e-reader
I recently graduated from college and got a Sony prs 505 for a gift and I love it. There are only 2 major issues with the Sony book. 1 there is no wireless feature like the kindle and the Sony store does not have as large selection as Amazon. but the new pocket edition is only 199 it is worth it be worth it.
Love it!
I love my Kindle, it is my favorite " gadget" of all time. It is like having your own personal book store with you 24/7. You can also download samples for free, which really allows you to test before you buy. Also, you CAN download lots of free content... books that are out of copyright, many classics. (Clark made it sound like this was not possible on a Kindle and it is, you are not restricted to just Amazon content) So despite the cost, it can pay for itself over time, in the lower cost of content. I can get a newly released hardcover book at the price of a paper back! It is also worth it for the connivence which your also paying for. FYI: It is already a huge hit, last year the Kindle one was sold out for the months! So Chris your way wrong on that score. I believe there will come a day when this is just how people read.
This product will be a dud
A new techno item to read books? Such a small percentage of our population in the US, especially our youth, enjoys reading. If you really want one of these wait awhile, most new products that don't get the sale numbers the geniuses that made and marketed them expected, will dramatically drop in price.
Effortless Laziness
Walk to the library - get your reading material for free, lose a few pounds, improve your cardiovascular health, and use your $500 for a 4 day cruise for 2 in the Caribbean.
Kindle
Clark, you missed it yesterday. If you go to Amazon and look at the top 100 downloaded Kindle titles, you will see that roughly 40% are FREE. They are lod books and first novels. Have a great afternoon.
