Sep 23, 2009 -- Bank of America, Chase getting more customer friendly?!

Two of the giant monster mega-banks are instituting kinder, gentler policies because they're afraid of the formation of a Consumer Financial Protection Agency (CFPA).

Bank of America will allow customers to opt out of a system that automatically approves debit transactions -- even those transactions that put you in the red. Beginning in mid-October, you can speak to a bank representative to complete the opt-out process.

Chase, meanwhile, has agreed to stop using software that calculates ways for them to generate the most overdraft charges possible on an account. This type of software is used by all the major banks, to Clark's knowledge. The practice will be discontinued by Chase starting next year.

Now, Clark could rant about how it's a shame that it takes the pressure and fear of the potential CFPA to make this happen. But instead he'll simply say to the banks, "Thank you for doing the right thing today."

What others are saying

  • Frank is right. I have a BOA account and I never had a problem. The ones whining about the big banks being thieves are the ones who cant manage there own money and need someone to blame it on. Dont spend money you know you dont have and you wont pay any feee's how hard is that?
  • bank of america
BOA is the worst bank in the nation. they are thieves, they reverse transactions out they have already cleared to get the most overdrafts possible. how can you keep track of what's in your account when BOA is constantly finding ways to overdraft your account. finally fired these jokers. took my business elsewhere. can't wait to wake up some morning and they are out of business.
  • Holding checks
On my last trip the Chase bank I was advised that in the future if I did not sign up for direct deposit, they would hold my check for 24 hours although the check was a state of California check and the others Social Security checks
  • Overdrafts
Most of the big banks process account debits before they issue your credits. Those with small balances get hurt. My small town bank always issues credits before debits each night. That's the way it should be.
  • Bank Of America
Everyone needs to use another bank and drive BOA out of business. We quit using them years ago.
  • Bank of America
Frank must work for Bank of America. It's not nice to assume the rest of us are not "responsible" and are deadbeats.
  • Bank of America
Theives! That's all they are. I have 2 checking accounts that are overdrawn because manipulated deposits I made and their fees....not posting a cash payment right away or taking out bogus fees causing the overdraft fees to snowball. Nasty employees and liars too.
  • Bank of America Bashing
My wife and I have been with BOA for years and have 2 credit cards and a debit card with them. I have never had a problem with BOA and have always been treated well. But then again we are responsible people. We don't bounce checks, we pay our bills on time and we have respect for the people we do business with. More than you can say for all of the whiners complaining about unfair treatment by BOA. By the way, when was the last time BOA ever mistreated you? NEVER, because you are financially responsible. I am really tired of the BOA bashinng. How about bashing the deadbeats for a change.
  • chase
i have just recently had the pleasure of dealing with the chase interest rate hike.......nothing is kind or gentle about chase
  • Large Banks
It seems that the "Too big to allow to fail" has not changed. We have the megabanks absorbing other banks with taxpayer money. How is this better?
  • BOA
This is the worst bank I have dealt with in forty years. Closed all my accounts with them. I can't believe taxpayer money went to this bank. This banks officers would have been executed in some countries for the dirty deeds they have done to customers.
  • Chase
called chase this morning, never missed a payment, I had paid over past 2 months 76% off my balance off; I called to discuss a better interest rate;they closed the account............which will lower my creditscore and heighten interest on future loans. Why did I help these greedy jackasses as a tax payer ?
time for that CFPA is long overdue
  • B of A's "customer friendly" services
B of A is all about greed. It doesn't know when enough is enough. the charges/mth it places on my business savings account make the minimal interest earned pale into insignificance. What a joke! Get real. Get less greedy B of A.
  • Banksters David VS Goliath ?
Go to Livinglies.wordpress.com to see how bad the banksters have raped us with no shame and no end in sight. this is a must sight 4 anyone who's home is nearing foreclosure. This site makes the battle field level as the "lenders" and "MERS" lack standing to prvail.
  • BoA Friendly?
I think not. I asked them to remove their annual fee, like they have all these years before, and they refused.
  • Bank of America... more friendly? NOT
This is too ironic, your topic. I have to give it a big fat NO. It just so happens I spent 1 hour and 20 minutes on the phone with them today to try to figure out where this $1,200 charge they are assessing me came from. I am closing tomorrow on my home (selling it) and they upped my payoff amount by this much. They can't figure out how or why it's there... I only need to pay it. I have always had terrible CS with them and extremely long hold times. They are not for the customer at all as it is very hard to reach a live person for options that are not on the menu.
  • Give me a break!
Banks, more customer friendly? MUHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!! They are only smiling while taking their hands out of the cookie jar and saying, "Nice Doggie!" Governmental regulation always seems to knock these cretins down a notch or two in the short run. But after a while, it's business as usual.

How to reform banking ethics in the long run? That is up to US. In my not-so humble opinion, if the majority of us FIRE THESE IDIOTS and take our business elsewhere, the banks who survive will serve customers, not the other way around. I only do business with a small, local Credit Union, so I've done my part. Banks no longer get any money from me. Money talks, and mine says "Goodbye Turkey!"
