Sep 22, 2009 -- Amazon launches own label of electronics goods

Amazon is set to offer a stern challenge to Wal-Mart and other electronics sellers now that the online retailer has launched its own private label line of products.

The Amazon Basics line includes electronics accessories and select items of electronics equipment. Amazon oversees all manufacturing and marketing of the line.

This development promises some great deals for customers. In addition, Amazon's traditional offer of free shipping on orders over $25 is also a great incentive for price-sensitive shoppers.

In other electronics retail news, did you know that BestBuy.com often has merchandise for sale at cheaper prices than you can find in Best Buy stores? The website also tends to puts goods on sale a day earlier than in their traditional brick-and-mortar outlets.

  • When Will They Become Just More Rebadged Junk?
I'll give the Amazon branded electronics a fair chance, but here's what I expect will ultimately happen, as usually does:

I expect that like Radio Shack and other retailers who once sold pretty good electronics of their own brand they'll one day decide it's not "maximing profit potential" and will move to simply rebranding low-cost junk from China & Taiwan.

I've seen a LOT of electronics that are the same or similar model, just different styling and "brand name."

Usually very marginal quality, and not reliable, but CHEAP CHEAP CHEAP as everyone MUST have, right?

    Hope Amazon won't do that.
  • made in usa?
    Hey Chris,

I don't think you can find hardly any electronic accessories made in the USA
  • Made In USA?
I'm going to have to assume most or all of these Amazon products are being built in China and Mexico just like most of Walmart's. No thanks. This trend of Americans consuming cheaper products made overseas has led to the loss of many jobs right here in our own country, why would I be happy about another line of electronics not made in the USA?
