Sep 18, 2009 -- Haircutting at home becomes a national trend

Do you cut your own hair or color it yourself? The Wall Street Journal reports this is a big trend around the country.

Sales of home haircutting kits are way up. The RoboCut and the Flowbee, which combine vacuum suction and electric scissors, have both seen big upticks in particular.

Meanwhile, haircare chains report their customers are disappearing. The parent company that owns Supercuts and Vidal Sassoon has reported its first negative annual same-store sales in 87 years.

But is it really a good idea to cut your own hair? Well, just go on YouTube and you can see people making fun of their own botched attempts at it. Judge for yourself!

Clark gets his haircut more often than he'd care to because of his HLN TV show. He used to go about six times a year. But now he's doubled his expenses because he has to go 12 times a year. Hmmm...sounds like he needs an HLN pay raise just to pay for all those extra haircuts!

Unfortunately, Clark won't be able to answer any questions submitted via commenting. If you have a question, please try posting it to our message boards.

What others are saying

  • My Haircut
Back in 2003 I got tired of the expense/quality ratio of store-bought cuts being so high. I bought a cheap kit and started doing it myself. Every 14 days I cut my hair myself including the back, over the ears and a neck shave with only the assistance of 2 mirrors. The cost was a $20 razor. With careful attention, I've never made a mistake. My wife even says so. If you like a simple, no frills hair-do, it's easier than you think to get a great haircut and save the dough.
  • DIY hair cuts
You'd think that hair salons would lessen their price during a recession! I believe that it was one of the highest paid (especially for the amount of time actually cutting your hair) professions out there for years. Nope, some have even RAISED their prices. Must not really be hurting for business.
  • Haircuts
I received haircuts my whole life from my mom and now from my wife and I'm 37 years old...That adds up to about $2200.00 if I had 6 haircuts a year at $10.00 a pop...Not bad.
  • Haircuts
My family is one of those that just switched. I just did not want to spend $30-40 for hair cuts for my husband and son, so we found a great deal on a hair-cutting kit for $15 and just in one instance saved $25. I did a decent job, so I think we are going to conitinue using it.
  • A $20 Wahl=A lifetime of free haircuts
    Robo-cut. lol

If you wear your hair short as I do(I use to have hair down to my as*) then a simple clippers is all you need. I've been going to a real barber the last 5 years, $8 a cut once a month, cheap. But he's getting old so I bought some clippers and do it myself. It takes a little skill but nothing much, if you wish to taper and blend you need to go watch a video online to get an idea of how to do that, but for a buzz cut it's set the blade at low or high, lock it in place and shave away. 10 minutes every 30-40 days.

As for women they're screwed, unless you have a family member of friend who'll do your hair for free or cheap it's off to the salon you go$$$$

DIY below knows what time it is!
  • Robo-cut
I have had my wife cut my hair with a Robocut for about five years. I figure I have saved in excess of $500, plus no wait!
  • been doing this for 3 years
After "Not-so Great Clips" pulled a bait and switch, by not honoring the free haircut after 10 punches on their card, I quit paying for a haircuts. My wife can do a better job anyway.
  • cheap cuts
cost me $8 for a barber shop haircut by a single owner small shop. first come, first served. i wait on average 10 minutes, sometimes no wait, sometimes 20 minutes. been the same price for all the 10 years we have lived here now. retirees cost is $5. a real deal. can't wait until then.
  • clean-cut
I got tired of schlepping down to the barber to wait in line for a $10.50 haircut that only took 5 minutes to cut, that's $126 per hour!
I now cut my own hair with a Wahl clipper and can do just as good a job.
  • haircuts
wuy pay $12.00 plus tip for a buzz cut.Thats just crazy. I let my wife cut my hair and my sons hair with a clippers. We have been doing this for 3 years now. I cant see myself going back to a barber anytime soon.
  • Haircuts
Try a beauty school for a haircut. It is much cheaper, about 1/2 price or more.
  • Clark's Haircut Frequency
Clark you know you make enough money to get your haircut every 2 weeks and don't need a pay raise. Plus it is tax deductable as a business expense. So please cry me a river!
  • Gas
Clark was talking about gas prices that could get to $1.-- well there is a QT that gas right now is $2.07 QT #00727, 692 Powder Springs road, Marietta
  • I quit going when it started getting over $15 for a simple buzz cut. Now my wife does mine and my sons hair at home. She still gets her long beautiful hair done at the salon.
