Jul 28, 2009 -- Best and worst credit cards named

There are wonderful deals on credit cards for those who pay their balances in full every month. In industry lingo, any one who pays in full is referred to as a "deadbeat." Isn't that interesting?!

SmartMoney magazine has revealed its picks for the best cards out in the marketplace. Among the top choices:

American Express Blue
Schwab Visa (2% cash-back!)
Fidelity Retirement Rewards AmEx (2% cash-back to IRA or 529!)

An honorable mention goes to the TrueEarning Card from Costco and American Express. And which cards stunk it up, according to SmartMoney? The Capital One No Hassle card and the Discover Miles card.

Unfortunately, Clark won't be able to answer any questions submitted via commenting. If you have a question, please try posting it to our message boards.

What others are saying

  • HSBC Not Chinese
    To Bob above:
HSBC is just a name. The bank headquarter in London, and is considered by the communist government as a foreign bank. (In case you forget, "Hong Kong" was British)
  • Chase Credit limit drop and change Due date
I have been with Chase over 15 years. Had a credit limit of $26K, paid balance off every month. Got letter saying credit limit being dropped to $7500 Because their records show I didnt need that much credit. I called and complained and they increased it up to $12000. This month I got online to pay the card balance only to see a $39 late payment fee. I have electronic statements which I only look at on the day I pay the bill because I only have a monthly gym membership billed to that card and dont use it for anything else. My bill is always due the 2nd or 3rd of the month. This statement showed a due date of the 1st. When I called to complain the associate pejoratively advised me that 12 does not divide into 365 evenly and that my due dates fluctuate from the 1st to the 5th. Fortunately my last 8 years of statements are available on line and I encouraged the associate to find one time in the last 8 years where my payment was due on the 1st.

After 5 mins on hold he came back on to tell me it was their mistake and in around 14 days I would get a letter from them accordingly.

Im sure this was just a calculated attempt at a $39 late fee. SO agravating having A-1 credit rating and perfect payment history and still being treated this way.
  • Automate your credit card payments
Some people here have had problems due to late payments. If you pay off your monthly balance every month (which you should always do), you should also set up an automatic full balance payment to your card from your checking account. Chase and Citi both have this option, I'm sure that many others do too. You just have to make sure that you always have enough money in your checking account so that the payment doesn't bounce. But you have to do that anyway when your write your check to the credit card company.

If your card doesn't do automatic payments, you should still be able to make your payment online manually. I haven't seen any card that doesn't have that option. You should never send in a payment by check, you can't trust the post office to deliver it on time. And all it takes is one late payment and you can really get screwed.
  • From Citi to Schwab
I, too, received the letter in the mail that Citi was raising the interest rate on my card (which I paid in full on time every month) to 29.99% interest. I know the interest isn't any big deal if you pay it off, but if something terrible happens and I have to carry a balance one month, near 30% interest is going to hurt.

I contacted Schwab about their Visa card. I couldn't find information about the card online. I was told that they still offer the card, but due to the high response they are no longer actively marketing the card. I spoke to a rep over the phone and he opened my brokerage account and I got approved for my Visa in just a couple of minute. Oh, and someone said that you have to have $1000 to open a brokerage account with Schwab...that's normally true, but they waived that for me since it was going to be used in conjunction with my Visa. I'm really glad I found this card and I can get rid of Citi!
  • CITI Master Card
I will check in to the Schwab Visa...I want to get out of CITI...they just upped their interest rate to 29.99% and my median credit score is 792, I have not been late in years, and I do not carry a balance.
  • Raising Rates
In reference to the person offering the Raising Rates comment.... spoken like a true credit card account person. Not only do the credit cards charge at least 2.5% per transaction they get tax breaks on bad debts (up to 50%) they still wind up in dire straits. Sure some people abuse credit cards. I don't and pay off my each month my rates just got bumped up and placed on a vairble. If you work for a credit card you probably don't belong on this site. Try www.greedandripoff.com don't forget to get your bail out money from Obama!
  • Citi credit card
I've had a credit card from Citi for 20 (or more) years, only had 1 late payment in that time (years ago) and would take 2-3 months to pay off a balance.....but undoubtably even that doesn't matter when it comes to MORE money. I just recieved a letter informing me that my apr was being raised to 29.99% and I could "opt out" and pay off my balance and my account would be closed or sit back and accept it. Needless to say, I'm "opting out".
  • Schwab Card
I got a letter today from Schwab saying that my interest rate was about to be increased to 21.24% due to a late payment that I made this month. What happened was that I submitted my payment online over the weekend and the payment was due Monday, my payment only posted on Tuesday. My minimum payment was around $100 and I paid $4,000.

In the letter, I was given the choice to reject the rate increase but my account would be closed automatically. I just want to make you aware that this can happen to you as well. I have decided to reject the increase and close my account with Schwab.
  • HSBC Weekend is Available
I love that card; when I spend on the weekends, it is a perfect replacement for the Schwab Visa and Fidelity Retirement AMEX card.
  • CHASE - DON'T USE THEM
We have a Chase Mastercard that is supposed to be 5.99% for life. They raised us to 11.99%, I called, went up the chain of command. No help for us, why? Because our payment history was too good! They said we'd have to become delinquent for them to do anything.
  • Raising rates
There are times when a credit card company will raise your rate. Unfortunately, it is not always something YOU did. However, most people fail to remember that this is a business set out to make a profit--not help you--and this is a tough time. Simple economics means that if a business has a loss, they will find ways to make that loss up I'm sure several of you have businesses in which you'd do the same. Credit cards are NOT a public good and should stop being considered as such. A few on here have 'always paid on time' and everything else (I always used to hear that from everyone no matter what the truth was.) If your rate jumps to 29.99 or 27.99 it means you are in default, which takes place if there are two late payments or overlimits in consecutive 12 months. No matter how many times you call, there is little that can be done by the associate at that point for six months.
The best strategy is only to use the credit card for things you an pay off or in dire emergencies. There are cases in which people get a raw deal. It happens. The majority, however, are a result of either an action or decision YOU took or did not take.
  • Bank of America
Bank of America took over my Merill Lynch card, canceled it, my Fidelity Rewards Cards (both the AMEX and VISA). I am disappointed that there isn't a competitor offering 2% such that I can make my car insurance payment and get a nice reward back.
  • Amex
I had Amex for 4 yrs I charged AND paid $1,400.00 per month never late. Last month at Dealership getting truck svc I went to pay with my Amex it was declined, when I called they said they was mailing out a letter to me TODAY my card is being cancelled. They pulled my current credit.
  • Sounds like Chase is on a roll! Here's another...
I've had a Chase credit card for years and used it often, e.g.for remodeling and travel. I pay in full every month, and I currently have around 150,000 frequent flyer miles. I have not made a late payment or had other problems. When I made my cc payment at Chase Bank, they said Chase is changing their rates now. You should call and ask for a special rate. When I did, at first they said no, it is still fixed at 7%. Then they said "Oh, it was increased to 20%." The customer service clerk then went into broken record of "Nothing I can do." If I close out the card completely I lose the mileage, but I will get another card and reduce the balance accordingly. I think I better go to a credit union.
  • Air Tran Visa - What A Scam
I just received my credit card billed. I'd used the checks they sometimes send with your bill to pay off three other debtors. The interest rate was supposed to be 0%. My bill now reflects a 2.99% interest rate, which is still low, but not what the offer stated! I called them and they said the 0% would go into effect on September 17. I told them that was the second offer they sent, not the one I used. Now they are not wanting to honor what they advertised! On top of that, they charged me a $39 late fee because THEY posted my bill two days late. They were not even willing to waive the $39 fee as a first-time request. I hope Americans wake up and stop living off of credit! It's modern-time slavery.
  • Don't use Chase
We have been Chase customer for years and years. Always pay balance in full, always on time. Just received my statement - $39.00 late fee. Called them and told them that I had written the check on 8/21 and they said they did not receive it until 9/14! "Postal service must have messed up". I paid Direct TV same day and they received payment 8/26. They would not take off the $39.00 charge. I accused them of holding the payment in order to charge late fee, which they denied. WHAT A RIP OFF - Manager said if I want to cancel be ok with them. I'm sure my next statement will reflect an increase in my interest rate. This is a scam. I have called the Attorney General's office and plan to call my congressmen.
  • Exxon/Mobile
Just had my rate raised to 15.99% because I'm a very good customer. Had this card over 10 years and never late. Carried a small balance a few times, will now pay in full each month.

Sure helps to be a good customer!!!!!!
  • Capital One
After years of being a great customer carrying occasional balances so they make money off me, always paying on time, etc. my 9.9% rate JUMPED to 19.9%! When I called to complain they said I was a GOOD customer which is why my rate didn't jump to 21.9%! Needless to say, I'm paying off that card and dumping it. Apparently a lot of customers have called to complain. Talk about "customer no service!"
  • Credit Card Crap
It would be an absolute SHAME if suddenly...those being ripped-off by the credit card companies just...STOPPED PAYING! COMPLETELY!....Gee, if just 20 percent of card holders did this....dja think the banks would sit up and take notice?!...there's not enough lawyers on the planet to go after everyone who did this...they've already traashed our credit ratings..(mine WAS 809!) In all fairness, I do believe in honouring the original agreements...but I also believe in those with whom I do business to also honour the same agreement. A point to ponder. PS..I drove a '78 Ford (which I purchased new) until 2005...the wife made me get rid of it 'cause it leaked oil in the driveway. I was too cheap to change the main seal, so i'd add a quart of oil every week...ha ..signed, a Clark junkie!
  • Chase UA card
Just dumped Chase United Airlines card. Customer since '95 and paid in full every month. Missed last months payment (minimum $10)due to travel. My fault but I called to get the $39 late fee waived. Was informed that they would only consider waiving the fee after I made payment and until that time the card is suspended. Have had similar situation with AMEX and they helped without any hassel. Just sent my last payment (in full) to Chase.
  • USAA Credit Cards
I just read from someone here that they had a great CC from USAA. The card that I have been using for over 15 years in my business just went up to 29.99%. I called USAA, we have our home insurance with them, and got approved for a 20,000 limit with an annual 8.9%, no annual fees and up to a 1.25% cash rebate on purchases! I am a happy lady!
  • Chase BP
My bank GMAC went defunct and FDIC kicked in. So Ally bought them. The payroll department at work had to update my deposit info when this happen otherwise payroll deposit whould of been rejected. 2 weeks later Ally final tells me this. So because of this experience I wanted to make sure the payment goes through when I paid chase BP credit card. This month I had to pay with my savings (which is Ally) not my normal bank. I always fully pay of my cards.

So I enter the new routing info online and had it paid on the due date. I get a e-mail saying it posted a day after the due date from chase. Well a week after the due day I get an e-mail saying I have a low balance. I have this set-up. So I think crap my payment must of been reversed. I check online sure enough the day before they had rejected it. I get a $39 dollar late fee, a $39 dollar return payment fee, and $14 dollars in interest. (I will get a few more dollars of interest for the days in another statement period). This for a $960 dollar payment.

I call chase to find out why and they said it was rejected, on a wrong routing number. Sure enough, I mistakenly entered a number twice, 11 instead of 41. I had triple checked it but I never have been good a data entry and was tired.

I explain how my bank got bought out and I wanted to insure it went through. I ask to reverse the charge, no. I fight about the rejected payment saying my data entry error should not get the $39 fee, no. I pay the amount off after I get off the phone. I am leaving Chase for good now.

I admit I made a mistake but almost 10% of the amount for what will be about 8 days late (took six days for the payment to be reversed then a day for me to find out), that is robbery. On an annual bases that is about a 450% interest rate.

To make it worse, I recently moved and I had update my phone. Well they call to tell me it was reversed the day after but they call my old home number, one I do not even have in my profile any more. They do not bother to call any of the three contract numbers I had updated online. So if I had not gotten the e-mail I would of had a few more days of not knowing and extra interest. Chase will send me an e-mail if I set it up when my payment post, or low balance, but not when I get late and return fees and do not bother calling any of the correct numbers I gave them. Talk about piss poor customer service. Lesson, do not use Chase, cancel your cards if you still have them.
  • Chase Business Cards
After receiving the flier titled “Changes Affecting Your Chase Business Account”, I learned I was being forced into a higher rate. After speaking with Customer Service tonight, they indicated they are moving “all Chase Business accounts to a monthly variable interest rate.” The net effect is that I am being forced to accept a full 1% more APR than I currently pay (moving from 8.99% to 9.99%). Inquiring why I was being penalized for paying my card off every month, the scripted-canned answer was that “costs of doing business are increasing and we are standardizing all Business accounts.” The customer service rep would not get off script when other questions were posed about how bad the economy is and how consumer spending continues to decrease to new record lows (see this story - http://www.google.com/hostednews/ap/article/ALeqM5jXcdAtoUrFgQESpWr7nEg-9H7U3wD9AJDL281).
  • Amex Blue Extortion
Yup, Amex is extorting me too! Thanks to their "global change", and after a thoroughly pleasant 30 minutes on the phone with both an Agent, Supervisor, and Manager they refuse to allow me to opt out of the rate increase or freeze the rate while I pay it off. Nice. They pleaded with me to wait until AFTER the rate increase and then see "what new options we can offer to you". Real, real nice. What a bunch of ****oles. 20 years with Amex.... GOODBYE!
  • Cancelled Credit Cards
I am not sure what happened recently but Bank of America just cancelled my card without any warning. Capital One and Macy's Visa lowered by credt to the balance on the cards. Have had these cards for years, always paid on time and paid more than the balance. I am so mad, I am going to work to get these balances paid off and never do business with any credit card company again. They are theives and have no mercy.
  • Call on Cancelled card
Sept 2 Clark had a call on a business man who had a big box store card cancel. It's not b/c of his credit, it's b/c he paid off his card every month. They weren't making any money off of him. That happened to my dh too. The company could give no reason for the cancellation. We now tell others to leave a tiny bit on each month, not pay off completely...
  • Capital One won't work with me.
Clark was right on Sept. 1 when he mentioned Cap.1 as one of or THE worst card company. I talked to them last night and they have NO programs or compassionate way to help laid off people with a program like all my other creditors are doing in lowering interest rate and setting up payments we can manage during this time.
  • Chase bank and visa
I just received the "Chase privacy Policy" and I quote, "Even if you do tell us not to share, we may share other types of information within our family. For example, we may share name and address, information about transactions or balances with us as well as survey results."
    I think I'll dump chase!
  • Chase Visa Card
After reading the comments, I see I'm not the only one Chase has messed over. I've had my card since 2004 when it was issued by Washington Mutual. I used it frequently in 2005. I always paid off the balance. I had a limit of $5,000. Then they increased it to $7,500 which I did not request, but I liked having that line of credit so easily available in case of an emergency. When the economy turned sour, I quit using the card. This week I got a letter from Chase informing me they had cut my credit line in half to $3,800 with no reason. I called and it was like talking to a robot. I'm very upset because I know this will reflect on my credit rating. I'm afraid to cancel it because that might hurt me even more. When will the govenment step in and stomp these ruthless thieves out of business?
  • Schwab Visa
I recieved my Schwab Visa and applied for my Schwab One Account. Now for the rest of the story. The Schwab One Account requires a $1000.00 minimum to open the account or $100.00 per month automatic deduction from a checking or savings account. Since Clark failed to mention that piece of information I thought it would be nice to let everyone else know. A 2% cash back is nice but I don't have the extra $1000.00. I guess I will settle for my 1% cash back I currently get. information from Clark.
  • Chase Master Card
In 2004 a customer retention specialist brokered a deal with me to lock in 6.99% for the life of the card unless I reneged on a payment at any time. She even through in some rebates. I've held onto the letter proving the deal she made with me. Yesterday I got a letter telling me it was going to 13.99% Nov. 1. The little jerk in customer service just kept repeating the mantra "the agreement, etc. the variable rate, etc.". I've got it in writing and you can't even trust them on a written contract!
  • Creidit reduction
AmerExpBlue is also reducing lines of credit, I have it reduced twice now, seem like it get reduced to about $200 above what I owe. I is now gone into the shredder, never to return again
  • Chase Credit Card
I second the negative comments about Chase. I find it offensive as a tax payer that Chase received any bail out money. It would have been far better to let them go under in favor of scrupulous financial institutions. As a "deadbeat", recent experiences with
Chase convince me that Chase's behavior is diesigned to drive off responsible customers in favor of making their late fee structure and other tactics a profit center rather than a punitive measure to encourage on time payment for habitually late paying customers. It seems clear that they are engaging in the same tactics of gravitating toward the chronicically vulnerable customers, behavior which got financial systems in trouble in the first place. Better late than never, but like so many other commentators at this site, count me in the ranks of the long term Chase non-customers.
  • Credit Cards
Do the Credit card companies take into account a customers credit score? My latest score was 806, I have a Chase Visa card and have never had a problem, I also have a couple of Discover Cards and again, no problems. Once I transpossed the cents amount on my check which lest a very small balance with a monthly charge. I called and they gladly wrote off the extra charge. I also pay my cards off each month in full, maybe that makes a difference.
  • No more credit cards.
Had enough of these robber baron bankers. Thank God I use a credit union. I am now convinced that the bank bailout was a mistake, and am going to pay what little I owe to credit cards and close all my accounts. Gas and store cards included. A rise to 29.9% on my Sears card for being a good customer has convinced me. As aresult of this, Sears not only lost my credit card business of 38 years, they have lost me as a customer. I now look to locally owned business for my purchase needs when I can. I have already stopped using most of them where a debit card is honored. Cash only works for me. The banks are digging themselves a deep hole and will see more and more depositors going the credit union route that I did years ago. Too bad their greed has killed any business sense they had. I expect that more and more people will go the credit union route as banks continue their shoddy practices. It's obvious they learned nothing from their past mistakes.
  • Chase Credit Card
Chase also closed my account for no reason. I've always paid on time and also paid more than the minimum amount. To add insult to injury, they also raised my interest rate to 29.9%. I called to ask them to work with me but they refused, so I closed the account. I know my credit rating will take a hit but I feel this step was needed. Wasn't Chase Manhattan Bank one of the banks that took bailout money from us taxpayers? Isn't there anything Congress can do about Chase?
  • chase credit card
Chase cancelled our credit card for no solid reasons, simply to cancel us, we have never made a late payment, never paid the just the minimum, totally debt free other than $800 dollars on this Chase Credit Card, Chase purchased our Credita card from Washington Mutual, raised our interest rate from 16% to 26% for no reasons. So HAPPY this this happenned...
  • Chase Credit card
We have a Chase card we kept for emergencies, with 11,000 unused credit. They cut the credit line to 800.00. When I complained, they cut it to 400.00. too bad our mortgage is also with them. Thank heavens they can't change the low interest rate on that.
  • Chase keeps taking over over other banks!
I hate them too. I have three cards that Chase now owns. I did not apply to Chase for any of them! If you close the accounts your credit utilization is shot & credit score goes down. If you apply for a new card you also get hit. It's a no win for us. I laugh when I hear Clark say we should have cards from different institutions. How do you do that & keep a good credit score?
  • AMEX & COSTCO
AMEX & COSTCO DID NOT GAVE ME MY TRUE EARNING REBATE OF $90.09 2008
  • ** More then one American Express Blue **
There are actually several types of American Express Blue cards. The one referenced in the SmartMoney article is the American Express Blue CASH.
  • Credit cards
After reading these comments all I can say is thank God my Visa is through my credit union.
  • chase amazon visa
Even though I pay my balance in full every month, I had a finance charge for paying the balance in full too early (the day before statement closing). The finance charge accrued interest for 2 months before I figured out what was going on. Probably my stupidity, but I would have thought they would waive that after a phone call. I cancelled the card.
  • Citibank Master Card
We have a Citibank Master Card. A year or so ago they raised the rate from 7.99 to 13.99%. Recently, they raised the rate to 29.99%! We have always paid on time, and feel that we are being abused. We opted out, and keep the old interest rate until we pay it off. This closes the account, but good riddance.
  • Chase Credit Card
I had a Chase Visa for over 5 years. My APR was 3.74% since 6/08. I pay on this card weekly. I just got my bill...and they raised the interest rate to 10.74%!!! I received no notice of this change. I called today and spoke with a "supervisor". She said that is the lowest rate they can give me and only offered to resend a notice I should have received in June 2009. I have 2 other credit cards which have APR's of 5.15% and 6.24% and excellent credit. I have closed this account and paid it off in full. I asked if Chase really wanted to lose good customers...and the supervisor said the company is just responding to current economic conditions. This is certainly short sighted...and I have no faith in a company with such limited vision.
  • 1st time buying new home
Just paid off my bankruptcy, chapter 13, the realtor/lender/owner won't accept no for us to move into house, but have no scores on credit. This is keeping me from getting any credit, can anyone give me some advice? even gas cards say no, so what give? tks, Bless all!
  • Credit Cards
Whatever you do stay away from HSBC and their General Motors credit card. GM card points can be used only on certain cars. Our points cannot be used for cash back or any other purchases.
Also, they are customer hostile. It took them 9 days to post my recent payment, mailed in Los Angeles to their City of Industry (Los Angeles) PO Box. The total bill was only $9.38, and yet they charged $20.00 in late fees and charges.
I called about the late posting and they refused to discuss it.
I find that HSBC stands for HongKong and Shanghai Bank Corp, and that it is a Communist Chinese bank. We are cancelling our HSBC/GM card.
  • Chase got another one...
Well, Chase decided to do me a "favor" last month by cancelling my previously WaMu card... and this statement they raised my APR just before they cancelled me!
  • Discover Card and Bank of America
I have had a card from each of the companies above. Yesterday I got my statement from Discover Card. I looked and my interest rate was doubled of my BOA card! I called Discover and tried to get them to lower the interest. I was told that they don't match interest rates of other companies and that they pay 5% cash back. After several minutes getting nasty with them I told them I was going to transfer my balance to BOA if I could. I called BOA and the guy was very pleasant and and worked with me. I transferred my balance of $1,100 and got a 3.99% rate. Discover was charging me over 15%!!!!!! I put my Discover card up in a locked fire proof box and will not use it unless I have to. I have been a card holder of each company since 2002 never made a late payment, never missed a payment and always tried to pay more than the minimum payment each month.
  • Capital One
Here's one for you. I have had the same Capital One card for several years and have always paid statement balances when due in full, until recently. We ran into some cash flow problem and so I was carrying a $3600 balance. After making several payments of $500 - 750 I made a $2500 payment on the account and the card was being declined. When I called to inquire I was told that there was a hold placed on the payment.???. Capital One had the money, it had been deducted from my checking account the night before....so I had to talk to three different people to have the hold on my payment lifted. Never have I heard of that, especially when they have the money and the account had been credited (as per the automated account person).
  • Chase and Universal Card
Several months ago I transferred $3,500 from a higher interest card over to my Chase card at something like 1.9%. What Chase didn't bother to tell me was they were tacking on a $33.00 a month payment protection plan. Enough of that, so I used a balance transfer check from Univeral Card (which I get in the mail weekly) and transferred the balance over to my Universal Card. I have zero balance on the card and they advertised to transfer balances up to my credit limit of $24,000 and at 1.9%.

A week later I received an email from Universal Card stating they were returning the check to Chase because it exceeded my credit line. I'm not the smartest person in the world but I am smart enough to know $3,500 does not exceed $24,000. So I log onto my Univesal account to see what's going on and my credit limit is still $24,000 but my transer limit is $280. But the story get better......

I keep an eye on my Chase account on line to see when the returned check get posted. When it does Chase hits me with a $39.00 returned payment fee, a $39.00 late payment fee and they tack on $88.00 in interest. The VERY NEXT DAY Universal Card decides to honor the check and transfers the balance.

I just checked my email 45 minutes ago and Universal Card has sent me another email stating they are returning the check because it exceeds my credit line. Lets see if Chase hits me with more retured and late payment fees.......
  • Same crummy Amex Blue boat
I'm searching for a new card to replace my Amex Blue, too. I've been a customer since they introduced Blue, never a late payment, and now they want me to pay 18%+ interest? No, thanks. They just lost a very loyal customer.
  • Bank of America UPromise Card
By far the best experience with a credit card. Bank of America recently took over the partnership with UPromise from Citi and I've only experienced the best service since. While I shop with my BofA card, I also get money set aside automatically into a college savings account with UPromise. And we all know how affordable college tuition is these days. And on top of it all, I made a silly mistake with my payment recently, so I called BofA and got all late charges removed and the situation was fixed immediately. The customer service rep was so nice and helpful that I took the time out of my busy day to write an email to her supervisor. I like to compliment people like that considering real customer service is practically non-existent these days.
  • AmEx Blue
Got my letter today informing me that due to the economy, American Express is removing (on all cards) the fixed APR and making it prime + 6.99% on all purchases. GOD FORBID if you have a late payment, your balance then gets over 27% interest. I've used AmEx for 6 years now, love their service and perks, but I will not maintain a card like this. Luckily we can pay off our low balance and are not stuck. I called to complain, the representative said they've been hearing lots of "feedback" on the changes from customers. Clark-you may want to remove this from your top pick!
  • Chase Credit Card
I have the Chase Rewards Visa, and this is what they did to me:

I have approximately $11,000 balance on this card. It is from "4.99% for the life of the loan" convenience checks from a few years ago, that I used to pay for private school for my son.

Three months ago, Chase sent me a letter, saying thank you for your business, good payment history, etc. etc., go ahead and skip this month's payment if you'd like, normal interest will accrue." I didn't accept, I still sent them my $250 or so monthly payment.

Then, the next month, Chase sent me a letter saying "congratulations, your credit limit has been increased to $25,900." This was an unsolicited, unrequested increase of over $10,000! But its good for my credit score, so I don't mind. My credit score is 780.

Then, last month, they sent me a letter saying "your minimum monthly payment is going up from 2% to 5%." So what used to be a $250 payment is now about $500.

This is aggravating enough, but I will be able to make the payments. I just would rather keep the money, paying only 4.99%.

The problem I have is Chase trying to "set me up" by telling me to skip a payment, and doubling my credit limit, and then AFTERWARDS telling me that my minimum payment is going up. It is unethical of them. But I never use the card except for the 4.99% convenience checks, so I will pay it off eventually and not use it.
  • Citi and B of A
I had the Citi fixed at 3 for "life of loan". I took up the offer in late 2004, used an auto pay through CITI to take the min every month, i figure they have lost around 10% up to 50% due to inflation and I intend to make sure they loose as much money as possible on there "investment". I figure if the gov't UNDERREPORTS inflation (and they have a big incentive to do so) I am going to "make" more. You guys need to work the system better.
  • Chase vs Schwab
I have avoided CHASE for years and am sorry to hear they are still horrible. I had a home equity loan from them which was horrible. Payments not credited, charges for missed payments when the payments had been made, etc. I vowed never to do business with them again and haven't in the 10 years since I paid off this loan. They don't deserve anyone's business, in my opinion. On the other hand, my Schwab Visa card is excellent. 2% on all purchases, very responsive customer service. Highly recommended.
  • credit card balances
Between my husband and I we have 6 credit cards, have not carried a balance in at least 6 years and have not been cancelled or refused another card. The credit card companies still make money on your purchases even if you don't carry a balance.
  • credit card balances
I had a credit card for a very short time when I was canceled. Why? Because I paid on statement, never carried a balance, and never charged more than I can pay off. Because I did not make them money on interest, I was denied 3 more times for credit cards. How fair is that? They complain when we don't pay and overcharge, but when we do use it wisely, we are denied the privalage of owning a credit card.
  • American Express Blue
Wow! What a surprise in the mail today. Got a letter from them changing my fixed rate to variable (a little over 15%) because of our changing economy. I've had this card for over 5 years and never late and rarely carry a balance. Thank goodness I don't have a balance now with them. Well, I am one of those going bye-bye! and closing this account.
  • Amex and Costco TrueEarnings
Had an Amex card since 1984 and got a Costco TrueEarning card in 2004. Then a couple years ago, my wife and I both lost our jobs and, sad to say, had to rely on the cards to survive. However, when we were having trouble making payments, we set up a hardship account with them. Amex messed it up the first time and had to go through a lot of pain to reset everything. During all of this straightening out, we actually paid off the Costco card. We were diligent at making our arranged payments. Without warning, Amex cancelled both cards 2 months before we would have finished paying off our debt. Now to add insult to injury, I get American Express Account Snapshots of these cancelled accounts to inform me there is no balance due. Funny thing though, on the Costco Card, it states I have a $500 credit line on my cancelled card. How can that be? When I called to inquire about it, I had to speak to 5 different people and none could explain why I had a $500 dollar credit limit on a cancelled account. I was told by one agent that would be the amount of credit I would have if I signed up for a new card. What? It is clearly stated that the card I have already has a credit line on it and they should just reinstate it. They were unwilling to reinstate either card. I preferred using my Amex cards in the past but the debacle I've been through clearly shows me that Amex has no clue as to what one department is doing to the next. Unless my old cards are reinstated, I will never use Amex again.
  • Don't Carry a Balance
We don't use cards as a rule and pay them off each month. It is nice to get the 5% reward for gas purchases (at stand alone gas stations) using the Costco Amex TrueEarning Card. 3% on travel. We also use USAA Mastercard with 1 1/2% return. Other than that we hate debt.
  • SHAME ON CHASE
EVERYONE - avoid CHASE! I had traveled 3000 miles from AZ to Hawaii for vacation with children, got to the hotel and the card DECLINED! CHASE had reduced my credit line by $1800 and had notified me prior to my departure - found this out after returning home - letter in the mail dated 2 days after my departure. In the meantime had to have a relative make an emergency payment so credit became available as we were spending 10 days and 2 islands with 2 hotels. After I returned home and discovered the situation I contacted CHASE and told them - SHAME ON YOU in no uncertain terms - then I cut the card. Once the balance is paid - will no longer do business with them. More action needs to occur with these credit companies that have too much control!!!!!
  • all cards
Have never had any problems with any card. Just obtain a card with no annual fee and always pay it off every month.Dosen't matter what the interest rate is. Only charge what you can pay monthly, float that amount until due for free and pay it off. Don't understand all the complaining,
  • Best Credit Card
It's hard to beat my Bank of America $20K limit, points for free items or cash, and discount from 100s of dealers - for 7.99%
  • sorry not government mess, our mess
It's irresponsible use of credit that got us into this mess, not the government. The credit card companies are in business to make money, and they are merely taking advantage of the "gotta have it now" mentality we've been in for many years. We're the suckers and the culprits. The thing that really torques me off is we've personally been responsible with our credit and money, and we're now having to carry the load of the irresponsible who have probably learned nothing throughout this mess, except what they've always thought.....somebody else will bail them out, and that somebody is me and you.
  • credit cards
The game of using credit cards is brutal and not for the lazy or uninformed. Also not for those who can't or don't read. You absolutely must know the rules and be prepared to play by them. The card companies have structured the rules in hopes that you make one slip and they own you for the rest of your life. So take an Evening at Emory class on credit card use, do research on line, and read the credit card disclosures until you understand what it is that they hope you will do.Set up your online service with each credit card you have. You can set up a number of e-mail reminders that make it impossible to pay late. Pay your bill when you get the e-mail that your statement is available; don't wait and flirt with the due date.Pay on line. Payment is quickly credited, verified with a confirmation number, and can't get lost in the mail.If you are hard pressed to pay your bill before the due date, use your card to borrow enough money to give you that approximately 2 week advantage and from then on pay when your statement is issued.Take advantage of low introductory rates, but be prepared to move your money when the rate runs out. Be interactive. Beat the companies at their own game whenever you can.Using cards is like crossing the street, if you don't follow the rules you will not make it to the other side.Think of the card companies as a big truck and you will think twice about being careful in your dealings with them.
  • credit mess and congress
CJ is right this mess was created by Congress. When will we Americans wake up and demand term limits. A congressional position was never meant to lead to retirement.
  • free credit reports
    To M P Myers
    Go to annualcreditreport.com
    This is truly free.
I've been using it for many years.
You can get your report from all three credit report agencies. I suggest you get one every four months. At least to make sure the information is correct.
One year when I checked mine I found an annual charge from a chase card I had cancelled several
years ago. Evidently they sent me a new credit card to an old address. The card was never activated and they charged the annual fee anyway. Its always good to check.
Since then my husband and I have put a freeze on our credit. Some states its free and others you have to pay.
    Good luck
  • Capital One -- the worst!
My husband & I have credit scores over 800, have always paid our bills on time never once being late and have never exceeded the credit limit. We've had an acct with Capital one for over 15 years and were always on a fixed rate of 8.9 + I always liked them because they do not have a balance transfer fee like most of the others. With no reasonable explanation they raised our rate from to 17.9% two months ago. When I inquired and protested, I was told there was nothing they could do. They were not helpful at all and evaded the issue almost to the point of being uncaring and rude. So right after that we opened an acct at our credit union and paid off the Capital One balance in full 30 days before the payment was due. Their rate was considerably lower at 9.9 for those with impeccable credit plus they guarantee the rate will stay fixed forever and they did not charge a balance transfer fee. So after I paid off Capital One, I recently got a bill from them for interest of $135. In other words, they still charged interest even though the account was paid in full 30 days before it was due! Beware, those who now have Capital One cards. It will change! Chase did the same with one of our accts -- raised the interest rate from 7.99 to 13.99 but at least gave us the option of not agreeing to the new terms & just to pay off the balance at 7.99 and cancel the card. Then, we rec'd a notice from AMEX Blue yesterday that they have now changed from a fixed to a variable rate so our monthly rate is 11.99 but who knows what it will be in the future? Again, beware of them. I cannot understand why these credit card companies are penalizing GOOD customers. One problem is that in the past they issued credit to just about anyone and now these people aren't paying their bills so we have to suffer for it. Of course, like cj says below, Congress is to blame for all the mess we're in as well. We plan to go on Dave Ramsey's plan and get debt free but it's hard when these credit card companies keep increasing their rates and changing their terms.
  • credit cards
All of you can thank Congress for this mess. They make the laws governing what banks and credit card companies can do. Complain to the real problem-Congress. And, yeah Congress wrote the lending laws that started the economic mess, the laws governing brokerage firms etc. They demonize everything to deflect blame from them selves when it's Congress that is the problem.
  • Chase
I had and have several cards . . . Chase is one of the worst . . . they raise your rate (all payments have been made on time) and then cancel you leaving you with the higher rate to pay off . . . tired of playing the credit issuers games? . . . SIMPLY STOP PAYING, as over 20% of credit card holders have done . . . and the card I stopped paying first . . . Chase, of course!
  • Schwab Visa
Got one of these and love it, 2% back on everything!
  • Chase Credit Cards
Too bad you didn't tell people how Chase raised their min. payment from 2% to 5%. Almost tripled my min. payment. And I've been a customer without missing a payment, frequently paying balance off, for almost 25 yrs.
  • Correction and additional info
Costco Amex True Earnings actually pays 3% reward for restaurants, not 2%.

PenFed pays 5% reward for gas purchase as long as the card is used at the pump. Then 2% for grocery stores and 1 1/4% everywhere else. The reward is paid to you every month by reducing your amount due. Best card I've found so far unless I'm shopping at Costco. Interest rate is 13.99% but I don't care since I always pay in full every month.

    Cheers!
  • zero percent
Mt Card has 0% for life.
I don't have one and don't play their games.
  • free credit reports
I know this is a little off the subject, but I have tried several web sites and although they state the reports are free they want you to give a credit card number to establish an account. An account for what? I'm not wanting to purchase anything and frankly the entire process gives me a bad feeling. Has anyone used a site they were happy with, and did not try to rip you off?
  • CitiCards - also the worst
I've had a CitiBank credit card since 1973 previously with a flat prime rate, always paid ahead of time and significantly more than the minimum balance with outstandings never in excess of of 20% of line.

CitiBank recently raised my rate to 7.99% over prime and a floor rate of 13.99% even when the prime rate is 3.25%. They told me "that I was lucky to still have a credit line with CitiBank and that they were cancelling most accounts."

I've had no problems with Capital One or Bank of America, where I have other Credit Cards and higher lines.
  • Credit cards
All of my cards have lowerd my limits so it looks like I owe a lot and have high Bal.and then my credit score go's down.I will try to pay them all off
  • Best Credit Cards
I am surprised that one of the best credit cards was not mentioned. While it is only available to USAA Members, the USAA Savings Bank MasterCard is excellent. If you are current or former military, check it out at USAA.com
  • Bank of America Credit Cards
Funny how they're spending all of this money on advertising and trying to be such "do-gooders" helping people refining their homes when I believe they're a huge part of the problem with all of us whose credit scores are getting damaged. We had a zero balance BOA credit card that we re-activated for my husband to use for business expenses. We had a $5,000 limit and a 7.99%interest rate. The first month we charged about $660 on the card. Before it was even time to make the first payment, he went to a restaurant and had an $80 charge that was denied. Curious about why, we got online and saw that they lowered our $5000 limit to $700 and raised our interest rate to 18%. We never even had a chance to pay the card in full. That's why the card was sitting inactivated after we paid the cards in full two years ago and closed our checking account with them!
  • Chase
You newsletter came this morning and I read all the negative reports on Chase thinking that I had dodged the bullet. With a 0 balance and a perfect payment record on the two accounts with them, I really felt immune to their tactics. Then the mail came. Chase had reduced my credit to below 20% of my original credit worthiness. What company will be next?
  • Chase Credit Card
I was given one year no interest on balance transfer, made payments on time. They raised my rate to 24% and then closed my account with this new rate. They suck.
  • Credit Card Annual Fees
I have 3 cards with annual fees. Two are paid off, 1 more almost done. I was told if you cancelled your cards after paying off, your credit score will go down?? Who wants to pay an annual fee of $60 is you dont want to use these cards anymore! Please advise.
  • Try your credit union
I have had a card with the A+ FCU in Austin for 15 years. I started out with 9.9%, and recently, without me asking they LOWERED it to 8.9%!!
  • Your local credit union
Check your local credit union for deals. My credit union has a Visa card that gives you 1% back on purchases, has a fixed 11.99% rate, same rate for cash advances, no annual fee, and doesn't charge for late payments. Not a bad deal. You do need to open a share (savings) account with them and have $100 in the account. That's not too much of a requirement to have an open credit line for more than the savings account--it's not a secured Visa.
  • Bank of America is the worst
I had a Bank of America card for 13 years at 6% fixed APR. Back in March, they sent me a letter saying the were raising the rate to 11.99% VARIABLE. I called and explained that I had the card for 13 years and had never so much as been late on a payment. The representative's response was that because of the "tough economic times" they were re-evaluating all accounts with a fixed rate of less than 10%. I canceled the card right then and there and paid of the entire balance (over $5000) the following week. Way to go and lose out on business BofA.
  • Penfed Platinum Rewards card
i also love this card...monthly cash rebates right off your bill! they also have good longterm CD rates and i was approved for a $19,000 car loan at the end of the card application process :)
  • Amex and costco
Paid on time, most months in full - card canceled without notice just before the rebate payments were due. Costco said there was nothing they could do. I was out my rebate, and a credit ding. This is a recommended card? I don't think so!!!! A true ripoff.
  • Credit Cards
My husband had pretty good credit until I took over and now he has awesome credit!

Then suddenly the companies started raising the interest rates. I told them all, especially Discover, that I was would pay off the balances then pay cash if they didn't work with me.

The last time Discover wouldn't budge, three years ago, I paid off my $5000+ balance so they knew I wasn't kidding....Well, they didn't, I did. On all 5 cards!! No more balances!

AND Discover keeps mailing me those checks for cash. I rip them up and mail them back the pieces. Tough!
  • AMEX TrueEarnings Card from Costco
Not only do you get your rebate from Costco but AMEX also gives you an additional 3% cash back on gas, 2% on restaurants and travel and 1% on everything else. YES, CASH BACK, NOT points you get to redeem for airline travel or at you favorite store. This is real money, green stuff. And, who out there doesn't buy gasoline or go to restaurants or fast food? This is a no brainer.
  • Chase - Again
Chase took over my card from WAMU. I have NEVER been late, usually keep a low balance but sometimes make large purchases and pay over time. In July Chase rasied my interest rate. Unfortunately, I did not cancel the account and now chase has closed the account withg the high rate locked in.
  • COSTCO AMEX
Because we only spend $200/month on this card (for gas), they cancelled it in January during the big credit crunch and did not tell us. We had always been on time with payments. And then our credit score took a hit because of their actions. Thanks so much AMEX. Costco was no help in getting this made right.
  • Credit cards
These credit card companies are all legal thieves.. I had cards at 5.99, 6.99,7.99% When the so called recession hit they went to 12.99.,to 14.99.. these crooks are getting money at 0% to 3& and raising there rates(doesn't make any sense) I have a home equity loan with Bank America at 2.74% don;t you know they will jump on me good if I default or make a late payment.. The Obama change people should have let these crooked banks go under and start all over again look how quick they came back?? Whats up with that?? And this cash for clunkers is an even bigger JOKE!!! only car dealers making money ,.. consumer getting fooled.. Let them go bankrupt too!! AIG getting ready to pay bonus again too!! All these major Corps and their boards fo directors need to be replaced.. My wife says I'd better stop .. I could go on an on..A Proud American (not so proud of way things are) Volunteer for service T/SGT USAF 1951-1955 Korean war( Another one we did not get to finish.
  • Capital One No Hassle
This card is great. Cap 1 has NO foreign currency fees and for only $39 a year you get 2 points for every dollar spent. These points are good for airfare, hotels, rental cars. $10k charges = 20,000 points or a $200 credit on travel expenses. Very easy - just pay off the card monthly to avoid interest.
  • Schwab
    Love this card. Thanks Clark
  • Credit Card Companies = CROOKS = CONGRESS
Corrupt Congress is in cahoots with these credit card loan sharks. If you want corroboration, you just need to look at eh first letter of the words: Credit, Credit Cards, Crooks, Congress, Corrupt, Cahoots! Me thinks it is a "C"onspiracy!
  • Credit Card Companies = CROOKS!
Ladies and Gentlemen, In my opinion, which is based upon 31 years of dealing with these "organizations" I have found them to be legalized mafiosi. At least with loan sharks and the mafiosi, you know what is going to happen (quickly). Crooks! All of them! I tell you, THEY ARE ALL CROOKS! Their crooked ways have landed us all in a living hell! Stay away from them. What do you think Jesus would tell you? What would HE do? (NEITHER A BORROWER NOR A LENDER BE!)
  • Chase BP
I also was charged $39 for a 2 day late payment. That card has since been run through a shredder. I would suggest the same for all others with this card.
  • Really?
I just read somebody's post: "Pentagon Federal Credit Union Visa Platinum has the best card with a 13.99% fixed APR"

That's good? Between my wife and I, I have four credit cards (only one with a balance) and none of them have an interest rate within 4% of yours.

  • Capital One
I've been a Capital One card holder for at least 23yrs. and have never had a problem. I pay in full every month and have never paid a penny of interest. I've even charged a car and several surgeries. When I charged the car, I had to call and request a short-term upgrade to my credit limit. They did that for me, I paid for the car that day by credit card, sent a check to Capital One and that was it!Transaction completed very easily. I've also traveled to Europe, Israel, cross country many times and taken a cruise on my points..never a problem! I've checked other credit card cos. and I've decided to stick w/C/O and glad I did. Many of my friends & family now use them
    because of my contentedness.
  • Chase BP
I completely agree on the Chase BP comments! I was one day late paying my balance in full and was charged $39. I called and the person would not remove the charge. When I asked to speak to his manager, he said that wasn't possible, and I could write a letter. I requested my reward cash and promptly closed the account.
  • Learning about Chase
If you want to learn about what kind of credit card company Chase is, go to Consumeraffairs.com. The worst.
  • Bank of America Credit Cards
I have had a Visa card since the original NCNB issued them in 1967. I have never had a problem with any of the banks that came after NCNB. In 1987 I acquired a NCNB Master Card. My wife uses the Visa card and I use the Master Card. Likewise, I have never had a problem with the MasterCard either. I think it depends on the cardholder's management of their credit card debt. You pay as agreed and you will never have a problem at Bank of America.
  • Bank of America
I started banking with BOA in the late 80s
and have never had a problem. I no longer
bank with BOA for convenience reasons but I still use their credit card. Maybe
I haven't had problems because I pay in
full every month and pay on time!
  • Amex Blue
I've got the AmEx Blue card and LOVE it. The 'what's so nice' feature is that when the once a year rolls around that you can cash out your reward you just do NOTHING. The cash is just credited to my card. Other rewards programs may offer slightly better rewards but you have to work to request the cash or gift card or whatever. This one I just use the card and every now and then I get a bonus!
  • Credit Card
Pentagon Federal Credit Union Visa Platinum has the best card with a 13.99% fixed APR, 5% cash back on gas purchases at the pump, 2% cash back on supermarket purchases and the cash is credited each month. They just raised my credit limit to $50,000. Balance transfer offer of 2.9% for the life of the the transferred balance.
  • Credit Cards
I find that all credit card companies are basically mega crooks. I have AMEX Blue, Discover, and BOA. I primarily use my AMEX Blue for most purchases. AMEX does have a good reward program with a variety of products. Discover and BOA are used about twice a year. If I cannot use my AMEX card I pay cash. The way I keep from going "past due" is I pay my card in full on the second day after my previous month bill is posted. In other words I do not wait until the actual due date to pay and I do this through on-line access. My back-up is automatic debit 4 days in advance of when the bill is due. This process works for me.
  • Amazon VISA card
I really like the Amazon VISA card. It has a rewards program that pretty regularly sends me a $25 gift certificate to use on their site. Amazon's site includes many other vendors and sellers and I've found that typically I can get things for less than buying locally. I recently bought an HP computer and got it for $100 less than any of the sales locally. Because I'm a regular shopper, I most always get free shipping.

Though under the covers it's really a Chase card, I have no issues - I don't ever carry a balance.
  • Chase Credit Card
After Chase took over our old bank with which we had a credit card since 1990, we assumed the card was no longer valid and hadn't used the card for several years. We got a Chase Freedom card and were using that when Chase sent us a card from the old, inactive account. We assumed it was a replacement for the Freedom card and started using it. Didn't find out until we got two statements in one month for two different cards. Their response: "Too bad; we won't transfer your balance on the old card to your new Freedom card." Their benefit: no rewards to pay and a higher interest rate on the old card.
Our benefit: none. What a sneaky, deceptive to do business. We will be de-activating and paying off those balances. We LOVE the Costco True Earning Card. Never a problem.
  • PAYPAL 1.5 PERCENT cash back
Can't believe nobody has mentions paypal cash back. I use it ang get back 1.5 percent back with every purchase as soon as I use it. That adds up to fast
  • Bank of America Credit Card
In June, Bank of America raised my credit card interest from 5.99% to 11.99%. That, my friends, is a 100% increase. I pay more than minimum every month and have never had a late payment. I called and I got the same story about lowering the rate as long as I didn't put any new charges on the card. This is not possible, because I have to use it at least once every month.

I told them that this was not a company that I wanted to do business with anymore. I am working hard to pay off the card and cancel it.
  • Bank of AMerica is bad as well
I opened an account with Bank of America about less than a year ago. They had a 0% APR intro offer that would end this coming September. I transfered a balance from another account to my B of A one and started making payments. They kept on changing the payment due date and one day I paid 24 hours late. They raised the APR immediately and when I tried to talk to a customer service rep "Mike", he was as rude as he could!!! I was outraged, as this was my first time late on a payment. Needless to say, I am paying as much as a I can every month to finish my debt and burn that credit card - ah, and close the account. I would stay with Blue and Gold from American Express. You do your thing and they are fine.
  • Chase and Bank of America
Unfortunately, I have both Chase and Bank of America credit cards. I find Bank of America to be worse. When I complained about the soaring interest rate (although I have never missed a payment in over 8 years), they lowered my credit line to just dollars above my outstanding balance, which really screwed up my credit rating. I just received a home equity loan and will get rid of both my Chase and Bank of America cards, and NEVER do business with either again!
  • Sears Citibank/Chase/Wamu
I used Clark's "laddering" technique to pay all of these "customer no service" creeps off!! (Most recently Sears Citibank visa) I am now free of CC debt.! I have joined a credit union, and soon will be free of these mega bank creepos.
  • 1st late fee with Chase
I've had a credit card with chase for well over 5 years. Each month I pay off my balance in full. For the first time, I was two days late on a payment and was charged a $39 late fee. I asked for a waiver and was laughed at. I will NEVER do business with them again. Stay away from CHASE and every company that they are affiliated with or eventually they will screw you over too.
  • Chase
Chase is the WORST. Followed closely by Capital One. Capital One sent notice of a huge raise in rates...I have NEVER been late with a payment. I had no choice but to close this account. Shortly afterward I went on vacation and my CHASE card was declined at the hotel. Once again, I have NEVER been late, in fact I carry a very small balance. Called Customer Service and Chase had CLOSED MY ACCOUNT without any notice to me. They claimed a letter had been sent, but I never received one. I have worked hard to rebuild my credit to a good score and this is how I am treated?! It would be better to never use credit just so we don't have to deal with these SHARKS.
  • Chase, I agree
Chase did something similar to us. We moved our balance to another card. Thank goodness we could do that. Apparently they just want to get rich off of our hard work and the poor economy.
  • Can't believe this .... me too.
I can't believe this. I was just getting online to find out what to do when a credit card company raises your interest rate to an ungodly amt for no reason. Chase did this identical thing to me. I cannot belive that this is what they're doing to their customers across the board! How outrageous!
  • Chase
I totally agree. Chase is making my life hell.
  • Chase BP Visa
Anyone who uses Chase is asking to be screwed. This is the greediest credit card company I have ever dealt with. I will never use Chase for anything again!
  • Chase Visa card
Chase is absolutely horrible. We were late on ONE payment and our interest rate was raised to 29.99% on a $5,000 balance! My husband and I are self-employed and used this card for business. (We have since stopped using it and closed the acct.) I called to request that our interest rate be lowered to something more reasonable & explained our situation. All they would offer was to lower our monthly payment for a while. I told them nevermind. That's just throwing our money in the trash. They refuse to lower the interest rate. I'm not paying another penny on this account! What is the alternative?
  • Old Wamu - New Hhase
It does appear that Chase has taken the spot of the top bank in screwing their customers. Not sure what market Chase is after, but I sure does not appear to be people who pay their bills on time, pay more than minimum payment and carry a balance under 30% of their limit. My old Wamu card, now Chase had my credit limit cut in half for no reason. I think that they are nuts and although it will hurt my credit score, I am closing this account because it is clear that this bank is run by fools.
  • In response to the comment on Citi
I currently work for Citi and PLEASE UNDERSTAND THIS VERY TRUE STATEMENT*** I'm not the kind of employee that only speaks highly of her employer even when they have done wrong! I believe in truth- but on BOTH sides of the coin. As a Customer Service Rep, I've seen both the evils and blessings that Citi has offered there customer's, and what I can assure the individual who posted a comment- H T Whitehurts- is that what you just described is called a 'Default Pricing'. It's not something that is 'just raised' on you. Even when we send out new Change In Terms Agreements, any balance transfers or promotions that you have already accepted CAN NOT be tampered with UNLESS you default on your card agreement. Rather you are late by a day or an hour after the cut off times, according to your card agreement, you run the risk of being placed into a Default Price bracket (a higher apr). I hate when I see this happen and on alot of incidences, we (csr) can reduce the rate as a one-time courtesy. But please know, your rate on a 'fixed' ( and only by reviewing your account can I be sure it was a fixed- perhaps you thought something was fixed, but actually had an expiration date),if truly fixed, remains the same unless you're late on your payment. I COMPLETELY understand the financial dilemas americans are facing and it is never your intention to default on your payments, however, in any case, its always BEST to pay at least the minimum by the due date to ensure your apr remains, rather than pay more than the min on a later date.
  • American Express Blue
I don't get it: What is so great about the Blue (card) from American Express? The APR, like virtually every card, varies from person to person and the reward points earned are 1 for every 100 in spending (with 2500 reward points needed to earn a $25 AmEx gift card). 1% reward cards are a dime a dozen...Combine that with the reality that few, and not the majority, of American businesses accept American Express and this card is junk. Schwab, PenFed, Fidelity, and (the available online only) Associated Bank Visa cards top the Blue from American Express card any day.
  • CHASE IS HORRIBLE!!!
Not only did they raise my interest rate from 11.99% to 31.99% for no apparent reason but my current credit rating but now they have chosen to close my account although I have always made my payments on time and paid more than the minimum and even paid off my balance at the first of the year. For being such a great customer, that is how I am rewarded, my account closed by credit granter....thanks for the ding in my credit rating!!! I advise anyone to stay away from doing business with CHASE!!
  • CITI Interest Rate
I have a fixed 2.9% - that's right fixed 2.9% on my current balance ($9.33 interest a month). But if I use my card at all, everything switches to a 17.99 % rate. I recently got them to lower to that from 19.99% but not lower. Never been late or made a payment less than the minimum. Go figure. Will I use the card? Never.
  • credit card
How does one obtain a credit card when I have always paid cash or check for purchases.
  • Chase greed
I bought a sleep number bed because of chronic back pain. I was denied the "good credit" interest rate and was put in for the 26% rate card with some obscure company. I then received a WaMu application offering 0% on balance transfers for 12mos. I signed on and transferred the balance. After 1 yr the rate increased to 11.99% I made more than the minimum payments til I lost my job and went back to school full-time. I then got a job part-time within the month and was able to continue the more than the minimum payments. Never missing a payment. Then WaMu was bought by Chase and I was notified that my rate would be increased to 29%. I called and was told that there was no way they would lower the rate. I could, tho, close my account and continue with the 14.99%. I had no choice really; I closed the account. When the economy finally gets going again, I hope we all remember how Chase beat us when we were down and hurting. Their greed is inhumane; may it come back to them 10 fold.
  • Bank of America is the worst
They sent me a letter saying they were changing my rate from a set 9.99% for my balance to a prime plus 11% (about 20% variable) for my balance and my purchases. However, if I agreed to not using the card, they would keep it at 9.99% but if i used it even once it would revert to prime plus 11%. I didn't agree to stop using it so when they changed the rate, I called. They would give me the terms that they offered but nothing else. I still did not agree and then the guy dropped my limit to $200 above my outstanding balance. Thus taking my debt to credit ratio from 50% to 95% of the card. All this and I pay the amount due plus some every month and on time. I've transfered as much as i can off that card and when it is paid off, I'm cancelling it and closing my checking and savings accounts with them that i've had for 10 years.
  • Chase fraud
A chase employee accessed my account and changed my mailing address to his. I found him on Google and reported him. Fortunately I caught this before he could do any damage but it makes me wonder what other info he has about me. He was a Chase IT guy.
  • Chase's new APR rape
Just received my Chase notice of my new APR rate of 29.24. I quickly closed the account and then spoke to a account support person.
I explained to them that I could not and would not pay their 29.94% rate. After all was said and done, my rate was reduced to 6% until the balance of $8,500. was paid in full. My monthly payments were reduced from $245.00 to $163.00. I can pay more if I am able. I can now manage these payments. The Clue? Ask to speak to an account support person not a customer SERVICE representative. I recommend one to stay away from Chase for any type of banking....personal or with credit cards.
  • Chase Credit Cards
I had a WaMu card they took a chance on me and gave me a 14.99% interest rate. I requested a lower rate because of my timeliness and extra payment every month they changed it to 11.99%! Chase took over and changed my interest rate to 21.99%!!! I called, tried to set up arrangements, told them I wasn't going to pay a dime until they lowered my interest rate. They would NOT give in. I filed a complaint with the OCC.gov after hearing about it on Clark's Sirius Radio show. I rec'd a phone call from some lady in administration. I agreed to close my account and continue to pay on it if they would take my interest rate back to 11.99%. Not only did she agree to that, it actually got taken down to 11.24% and they credited my account the difference for the previous 3 months of the high interest rate. I will NEVER do business with Chase again in my lifetime. I know people with excellent credit that refuse to have credit cards with Chase. They are greedy and not customer service oriented.
  • I'd rather have cash not some hyped up fund
I'd rather have cash. Those cards don't even give you 5% back on gas.
  • credit cards
Pentagon federal credit union is by far the best credit card I get 5% on groceries 2% on gas and everything else 1.25% and they give the cash back every month
  • Ask any millionaire.......
how did you make all of your money? Not one millionaire will tell you they did it with their credit card "points". Play with "fire" you will get burned.
  • chase
Stay away from Chase...company reflects total greed. customer service at its worst. You cannot trust any agreement with them...they simply change their terms.
  • If you are eligible to join, USAA has some great rates on their cards. I have a good credit score, and my rate went only to 6% from 4% as a result of the economy. Most any credit union card is better than a bank card too.
  • Schwab - Pays Monthly
I'm still mad at Schwab because of their High Yield Plus fund. I was in the process of closing all my Schwab accounts until this Schwab Visa came along. I decided to keep one account open. With the extra 0.5% rebate compared to my last card, it will take me about 100 years to make up my lost money.

Anyway, the Schwab Visa card is quite superior because of the monthly rebate payments. AMEX Costco pays once per year.
  • Stay away from Chase!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Chase rewards is average but if your late on one payment they raise your interest rate to 27%. They did this to me and my credit rating is over 800. What an insult. Chase is also known to mail your statement late giving you only 10-12 days to submit your payment.
I'm looking for a new visa card so if anyone has other suggestions please advise. I do have American Express Blue and love it but not every merchant uses them. Bob, keep trying this card is worth it. You might want to ask them why they are turning you down.

    Thanks
  • Something screwy with the American Express Blue Card? I have had the gold card for about 12 years without a problem. I have applied for the blue card three times and I've been turned down on each occasion. Go figure???
