Jul 23, 2009 -- Zer01Mobile jeered, Straight Talk cheered in the cellular world

Zer01Mobile announced back in the spring that they would offer an extraordinary plan for wireless phone service. But new details that have emerged about the company suggest it's all too good to be true.

According to NetworkWorld.com, Zer01Mobile is worse than just vaporware; it may be an out-and-out fraud involving multi-level marketing. No word yet on if this allegation is true or not.

One of the company's key players has been in trouble with the law over securities fraud, has filed for bankruptcy and allegedly diverted money that he collected for investments to spend on jewelry.

Clark's advice is be very wary of this company until they prove they're an actual legitimate business. Where there's smoke, there may well be fire.

Meanwhile, in more positive news, people have been signing up for the $45/month unlimited calling and texting plan through StraightTalk.com like gangbusters. This is about a third of the price you'd pay with Verizon, T-Mobile, Sprint or AT&T for similar service.

Straight Talk actually uses Verizon's network to place calls. So you can go with Verizon and pay $125/month for unlimited calling and texting or you can go with Straight Talk and use Verizon's infrastructure for $45/month. You do the math.

The biggest complaint about Straight Talk so far? A limited selection of phones.

If you don't need their unlimited plan, they also have a $30 monthly plan with 1,000 minutes and 1,000 text messages. That generous offer has prompted T-Mobile to respond with a similar $39/month offer in many markets.

What others are saying

  • Straight Talk
The customer service really stinks..I have to keep repeating myself, and their website is so user unfriendly. I hate to call them. That is why I am switching to another company
  • straight talk does not deliver
straight talk does not deliver the verizon wireless performance. i purchased two of these phones and since then i have had numerous calls that can not be completed as dialed, or people get a message that my number has been disconnected, and very often, that they can't get through because the network is busy. I use this for work and can not afford to miss any calls. I had to go to verizon today and sign up for a two year contract and will drop straight talk tomorrow once the number is ported over. However, if straight talk can get they act together in the next month, i will switch back. but time will tell. It is very unreliable.
  • Moving back to Verizon
Ported my verizon number about 2 months ago to Straight Talk. A move I totally regret. I think the thing to remeber is you get what you pay for. I had web access for a week then it just went away. Have called their cust. service dept 6 times. Each time the same response is given...the ticket is being exclated, call back in 48 hours. They are located in Colombia and there is a definite language barrier in addition to complete lack of service. I'm going back to verizon where I may pay more...but always get great coverage as well as customer service.
  • Straight Talk
Note that although Clark states the Verizon infrastructure is used for Straight Talk, the coverage maps are quite different.
  • Overbilling
There customer service is almost non-existent. It took me an hour on hold an theatening them with every thing I could think of to get the problem resolved. There tactic is to frustrate you with the hold time in hopes you will go away. Things seem OK until you need help. There is no chat, no email address, only snail mail and somebody in God knows what country constantly putting you on hold. Once I save enough to cover the cost of the phone, I am moving to Verizon or Sprint.
  • Misleading coverage -tech department
I called ST to ask about coverage in my area. Tech support department pulled up a VERIZON PREPAID map and told me i had excellent coverage. Then i asked about an obvious NO SERVICE area as shown on Straight talks map. (Lubbock TX) Again, she said "coverage is great in that area"
i asked her to pull up that map on her own site (she didn't have access to their own site)
Notice the coverage map is VERY different than Verizon's.
So, the technicians are telling customers they will have equal service area to Verizon prepaid, when their own coverage map shows way less. Something is fishy. She talked to her supervisor twice because she wasn't aware of this.
    they "escalated" it to corporate.
  • I had my doubts about coverage, but it is great, same as my friends with verizon! I had my doubts about service, but it has ben great as well. My first razr phone had no lighting on the keypad, straight talk sent me a brand new phone first with a prepaid envelope for the old one. I feared I would lose the balance of my 1000 minutes and have to purchase A new card for the new phone, but they activated my new phone not with the remaining 500 minutes but with a fresh 1000 minutes for the hassle! Maybee all of these negative complaints true or not are helping? I have never had any network comp me any minutes! Free 411 also!! Very happy!
  • straight talk
this is the wort freaking co ever do not buy this product! they have ripped me off for pre paid minuted and the effing phone was never activiated
  • straighttalk.com
I not only have a problem with the phone choices, very bad, but also the cupport line is only open til about 7 or so and when we had a problem with them taking the minutes from one phone and adding them to the other phone they were not open to fix it. Tech support was closed, refill was closed and you can't change info online without calling the number, which was closed.

  • Unlimited Talk and Text for $39.95/Mo.
Page Plus Cellular stepped up into the prepaid wireless unlimited game by offering unlimited talk and text for $39.95/mo. (including all those "junk" fees). It runs on the Verizon Wireless network. Moreover, Straight Talk does indeed run on the VW network BUT it does not have VW roaming capabilities like Page Plus Cellular does. Straight Talk confines you to three phones and does not allow VW phones to be flashed on its system; whereas, Page Plus Cellular allow you to "flash" your VW, Alltel, or even Amp'd phone to its system. Thus, Page Plus Cellular is cheaper and better than Straight Talk. The difference per line with VW unlimited calling and texting to Page Plus Cellular unlimited calling and texting is $83.05 (before "junk fees"!). That's a $996.60/line savings ANNUALLY!!!!

after reading all the comments about poor customer service from straight talk I will stick with my phone plan from the big phone co. at least you have someone answer your questions that speak english
  • Poor Customer Service
I have been trying to get my phone activated for over 2 weeks. I have been contacting them every day and each time I get a different story of why things are not working/progressing. They keep mentioning that the problem will be resolved in the next 12-24 hours which is never true. I have experienced the same customer no-service as described in the other comments. I am currently looking at other possiblities for phone service as I am waiting for ST to activate my phone. The ST plan is probably a great deal and works for 90% of the people but I judge a company on how they deal with the 10% that experience problems and in my case ST fails.
  • Availability
The locations where the phones are available is very limited. I went to their web site and none available where I live or plan to move to. Went to Walmart site none within 100 miles of either loacatin. If you buy one in another location or have shipped to local Walmart, can you get a local phone number?
  • Verizon
We have the same complaints with Verizon as you have with Straight Talk. If it costs 1/3rd the price as Verizon with the same customer response, then why not take Straight Talk and be happy? As far as not having to wait long for a response. We still wait several minutes and get help that is really no help. My response:If it is the same across the board except for the price being higher at Verizon, pick Straight Talk.
  • modifying other phones for ST
It's possible (though it requires some technical skills) to get a cdma phone (eg any sprint, alltel, verizon, etc... phone) to use with Straight Talk. There's some info on howardforums.com concerning unlocking for straight talk.
  • Straight Talk Phone
I just activated my straight talk phone
about a week ago. Porting my old cell number from Verizon was not a problem, and coverage has been great. What really makes me happy is this:

Two months ago Verizon charged me over $ 200 for overage minutes. I was changing jobs so I needed to use my cell phone a lot. I did not pay the overage charges right away because I figured I would be able to negotiate some kind of refund if I agreed to a more expensive plan. Verizon's response: Pay or we will cut off your phone! They had me. I thought that changing phone numbers would make me look flakey to my new employer so I just paid the bill.

I am happy to be no longer doing business with Verizon directly, yet still using thier network with more minutes at about one third of what I had paid them before. Thank you Straight Talk!
  • Straight Talk Coverage Area
Check it out at Straight Talk and then check out Verizon. ST does not use all of Verizons coverage area. Disappointing as I see it...
  • Poor Service
I believe Straight Talk could be a very good deal, but I have not been able to resolve an issue with connection to their browser. After repeated attempts talking with customer service I am still not able to access the browser. I requested a new phone, but have been left hanging with no response from their headquarters. I do not consider this to be acceptable at all.
  • Poor Customer Service
I have used Straight Talk for almost a month, and I still cannot access the Internet. Repeated calls to customer service have proved extremely frustrating as I first have to wait for a rep (usually about 10 minutes). When a representative answers the phone, I have a hard time understanding the person because English is not their first language. I'm told to perform the same steps on my phone repeatedly. When the steps don't work, they assure me that they are emailing my problem to a technician who will correct the problem within 48 hours. After going through this day after day, I still cannot access the Internet. There is no email address to contact Customer Service. As I was waiting for a customer representative about 20 minutes ago, I was cut off. When I called back, I was told that Straight Talk was closed "FOR THE HOLIDAYS"! What holiday is July 27th?!! The website also just went down for maintenance. I have had so many problems with Straight Talk that I would advise other people to think twice before switching over. Maybe the company will be fine in a few months, but if you have a problem with the service now, you will receive very little support. To add insult to injury, Straight Talk also will NOT restore the minutes that customers spend on the phone seeking help through their own customer service department. Frustrating!
  • A mixed review of StraightTalk
I've had StraightTalk for 2 months now, and I've had one major problem. StraightTalk dropped my number from their system completely, and it took them 20 hours to restore it. Of course, it happened when I was driving 400 miles by myself. On the bright side, the 1000 minutes is covering all my phone usage. I found StraightTalk had good coverage on my return trip from Myrtle Beach. The reception in the Atlanta area has been excellent.
  • coverage map
My biggest complaint about Straight Talk so far is the crappy coverage they give (check their service map). But Georgia is well covered, so that's all that matters. Used to be the same for Magic Jack. They didnt even have an area code for this entire state, and now they do, but the closest local number we could get is at the opposite end of the state. (WV)
