Jul 23, 2009 -- Wal-Mart starts price war on computers

A new price war in the computer business among retailers promises great deals for consumers.

Clark recalls when bought his first computer for his travel agency back in 1982. At the time, he needed specialized software to do travel accounting and specific hardware. The price? $25,000! Used!! And that was considered a deal back then!!!

Now his $19 Casio watch has more capability than that old computer. We forget how technology actually gets cheaper over time, unlike some other consumer items.

Recently, the consumer champ bought a new Acer laptop for $299. Then he opened up USA TODAY and saw that Wal-Mart is selling the same model for $1 cheaper!

Computers are getting so affordable that they're almost becoming impulse purchases. What a world of difference from the beginning of this decade, when buying a computer was a major financial decision.

Netbooks, meanwhile, remain so hot that most retailers are inflating the price. But Clark thinks by Christmas they'll be in the $100-$200 range.

Wal-Mart isn't a place that many people would consider buying a computer. But the mega-retailer is revamping many of its electronics departments to capture more market share.

Best Buy was expected to gain a lot of market share following the collapse of Circuit City. Yet it's been Wal-Mart, Amazon.com and the warehouse clubs that have picked up most of the business. As they all fight it out, it's the consumer who really wins.

When it comes to back-to-school shopping, Clark is often asked by parents if they should buy their son or daughter an Apple. He's basically agnostic on this question, leaving it up to each individual family. His own daughter uses cheap PCs at college.

It's important to remember even a cheap computer today is more sophisticated than what was used to put a man on the moon 40 years ago!

  • Wal Mart stinks
I do not shop at Wal Mart. i haven't in over 2 yrs. I do not miss nor need to go there. I buy my groceries and other items at a cheaper prices and I use coupons. I don't have the time to deal with all the white trash that go to Wally Worls...
  • Computers
On Friday my husband bought me a Acer netbook.
Since I didn't need a lot of graphics and software, it was perfect for me.
We went to HHGregg and saw several of them.Different prices of course and Clark, you'll like this part.
We found one Acer, open box, price?
    $238.00!
Bought it and a new carrying case with a mouse. Total price...
    $284.07!
And yes, I turned down the extended warranty. This little thing even comes with a International Travelr's Warranty!
    Pretty cool huh?
  • Apple Computer is what we chose.
Both of our daughters are in college and we struggled over the same question Apple or PC. They are very happy with the Apple, while Dad here plucks away on the PC. Too many crashes and visuses on PC's. They have commented many times they are so glad they have the reliability of the Apple.
  • Win 7
They are already offering the free upgrade to Win 7 if you buy a computer now.
  • Made in America?
I guess that Chris doesn't own a computer or a TV, or buy generic drugs, because none of these are made in America, even if the label is a good old American brand name.
  • Wal-Mart $298 not a real notebook PC
The Acer I see at Wal-Mart for $298 is a netbook, with a 10" screen. That isn't a real notebook PC.
  • Walmart
Walmarts employees by and large earn more than the minimum wage. Besides, if you're trying to live on 7.25/hour, you're an idiot.
  • HMM
This Walmart monster is getting too big, Walmart is a perfect example of how weaker and poorer Americans are. The WallyWorld in my city sits in between two mom&pop grocery stores, a fleet farm/farmers market and a small strip mall, Walmart is the only one ever FULL and the parking lot is gigantic! I do shop there sometimes, but I only buy American made so I don't usually walk out with much. I understand people needing cheaper prices but at what cost? I thinks it's more about convenience than prices sometimes, a person can get their groceries, necessities and almost everything else in one stop, and now computers! But for some reason they don't have a butcher. lol At least we can all rest assured that all Walmart workers now make at least 7.25 an hour, about half the amount an hour one needs to live a decent life.
  • All Cattle Line Up For Walmart
Anyone else starting to think by 2020 there will only be Walmart to shop at?
  • computers
I say, wait until Windows 7 is out. It will be released Oct. 22. Usually, they offer a coupon for an upgrade with any computer for a month or so before the release date.
