Jul 23, 2009 -- John Beck's get rich quick schemes targeted by the FTC

The FTC is cracking down on three prominent "get rich quick" schemes that robbed consumers of $300 million.

John Beck/Mentoring of America is the marketer behind "John Beck's Free & Clear Real Estate System," "John Alexander's Real Estate Riches in 14 Days" and "Jeff Paul's Shortcuts to Internet Millions." People who bought into any of these programs were unknowingly signed up for additional monthly charges of $40!

"To con artists, today's challenging economy presents just another opportunity to play on consumers' worry and bilk them out of money," David Vladeck, Director of the FTC's Bureau of Consumer Protection, said in a statement.

On our show, we've seen a steady rise of calls and e-mails about these "dare to be rich" programs that are often marketed through seminars and hotel-ballroom presentations.

As Clark said back in the 1990s, be very wary when someone tells you about a magic strategy to get rich in real estate.

The consumer champ knows a man who had a great career that many would consider a dream job. But he was a bit bored with it. This man responded to an infomercial, went to a hotel ballroom and got so fired up that he quit his job in mid-career and borrowed 100% of the cost to buy rental properties in three states. Not a smart move.

The whole philosophy with these kinds of schemes is to get rich using OPM (other people's money). It dovetailed perfectly with the loose lending standards of the '90s.

And it's very similar to what happened before the stock market collapse of 1929. Back then, you could borrow up to 90% of the cost of a share. More recently, the failed Lehman Brothers and other institutions were allowed to do 30:1 bets. They only had three cents in the game out of every speculative dollar. The results were disastrous in both instances.

Remember, you make money the old-fashioned way -- one step at a time. There's no overnight (or 14 day) way to do it.

He has been on TV for years so you think he must be legitimate. I am guilty of being sucked in. It is a big scam. They don't help you like they promise to when you buy in. Not even close!!! Then the salesman will not return your phone calls. They charge everyone by how much your credit line is. I had two different coachs and the last one was starting a new business so you know where his attention was. The first coach left to a better opportunity, why were they leaving if John Beck's program is so lucrative? I need an aggresive lawyer and DON'T waste your money.
  • Banner Get Quick Schemes on this site
If you allow so many "get rich quick" scheme banners on your site, how can we trust you?
You chastise these rip-off artists all the time, yet you promote their schemes.
    Where is your conscience?
    You sure have lost mine!
  • Banner Ads
The ads you see are targeted ads that come up based on the content of the page. The editors don't pick them. If an advertiser pays for space and a page has the keywords that match, the ad goes up. It's no different than what you find on Yahoo or Google pages.

  • PLEASE
Look at the ad at the top of this page! "I'm Rich. You're Not" "Click here to find out how to make $3m doing nothing." The ads shouldn't blatantly conflict with the advice we're reading from you. Please have your staff be more selective with the ads they accept for your site.

  • John Beck's Free and Clear
Hopefully I won't see those Free and Clear infomercials anymore. They are so annoying since I know they don't work. Maybe they can replace them with the Clark Howard show!
  • Banner Ad
It's a bit ironic, if not sad, that as I read this article right now I am looking at a banner ad on this Clark site web page entitled "Now is the best time to make millions in Real Estate!" CLICK THIS LINK TO LEARN HOW which leads you to Dean Graziosi's get rich quick site.
Clark, I'm sure you get big bang for little bucks on this banner ad rich hosting site but it's quite the conflict of interest and is confusing to readers who may think, "Oh, but this get quick rich site is legit."

For integrity's sake you need more control over ad content on this site. Just my opinion.
  • Incomeathome.com
Yep! It's another one. I hear it advertised on the Glenn Beck Show. I have what's called "Web of Trust" on Firefox and on Internet Explorer. It warns me of disreputable web sites prior to entering them. It's really handy folks....and free!

When I go to "Incomeathome.com...sure enough! "WOT" warns me to be prepared.

Clark has legitimate work at home operations listed on his home page. They make sense. These other fraudulent sites like those using "Google" as a buzz word aren't even associated with Google.

This latest scheme mirrors something that happened several years ago. Buying houses for no money down. Don't worry....be happy. They'll find renters or buyers for you while you cook the records to flip the houses.

It follows that ALL of us need to practice the old saying of "Buyer beware." Always use caution and go in with your eyes wide open as we say.
  • John Beck Article
As I'm reading the article on John Beck and FTC cracking down on get rich quick schemes -- on Clark's site there is a sidebar ad advertising an "As Seen on TV" book about getting rich in real estate. Smooth move Clark.
  • Too Funny
I have often watched these infomercials with the get rich quick schemes in real estate. Yes people get rich in real estate but it takes a lot of work and some working capital. I usually just watched these to humor myself and get a good laugh - but I always felt sorry for the person who was watching the same program and buying into the nonsense - I guess Darwin was right
  • Get Em!
Let's all grab some torches and pitchforks and chase Tony Robbins down! lol
  • Other financial institutions?
Lehman failed, but what about the other financial institutions that speculated? Thank you Obama for bailing out the other gamblers. Moral of the story: don't gamble with other people's money, unless you are too big to fail.
