Jul 21, 2009 -- Reduce your unlimited calling plan with Google Voice

Are you a talkaholic who wants to save money? Google Voice is a free service with great promise for penny-pinchers.

When you sign up for the service, you get a new phone number. That new number rings simultaneously on as many of your existing numbers as you want.

(Editor's note: This service is being rationed out slowly, with groups of new users added from time to time. That's why Clark encourages you to sign up today.)

Google Voice also transcribes voicemails and converts them into text messages. Other features include free call forwarding and conference calling.

But FierceWireless.com recently reported on something that didn't occur to Clark.

Google Voice may allow you to stop paying big bucks for unlimited calling to a select group of "favorite" numbers. You'll be able to route your calls through Google Voice for nada, thereby freeing you up to cut your plan down to the lowest level for unlimited calling. See FierceWireless.com for more details.

What others are saying

  • google voice's "one number"
when i receive a call, how will i know that it is from someone that i gave the google number to?
  • drawback
The drawback is that you can't see missed calls if you want the calls to be unlimited. If they leave a message then you'll. If they don't then you need to access the mobile website.
  • google number
You don't necessarily need a number in your town, just in your area code, or whichever location doesn't cause most of your friends/family calling from landlines to incur long-distance charges. I just got Google voice, and it's great! I'll probably ditch my landline. Transcription of VM isn't always accurate, but it can be hilarious!
  • Google Voice
My town wasn't listed, so I put in a town adjacent to ours that is within our local calling area and it works. Try that.
I haven't used it extensively but I'm anxious to start using it.
  • Careful there
Careful if you're going to use this exploit against T-Mobile's myFave's plan:

*Your five numbers must be US domestic numbers and must not include 411, voicemail, toll-free, 900, calling card, and customers' own numbers; and single numbers allowing access to 500 or more persons.

Interpret it as you want - but it could be prohibiting you doing what FierceWireless was suggesting.
  • Google voice
I have been invited but no number is available for the city I live in. So now I guess I need to wait until it happens. Bummer.....
