Jul 15, 2009 -- Banks investing in ATMs that scan and photocopy checks
Large and mid-sized banks across the country are investing in automated telling machines that allow customers to receive photocopied proof of check deposits.
This is really just an extension of what some small business owners have been doing for years. Clark recalls manually photocopying every check in his travel agency days before making a deposit at the bank. That way he was protected if the bank tried to say he did not make a deposit he knew he did.
It was actually Fidelity Investments that pioneered the idea of ATMs giving photocopies of checks.
And under the new Check 21 rules, one additional benefit of these new ATMs is that you'll likely get credit for a deposit one day sooner than before.
Yet this all begs the question: Why are banks spending money on purchasing and installing these fancy devices? Simply put, they save a fortune by eliminating labor costs involved in manual check processing. The payback period on these machines is 14 months, according to The Boston Globe.
In another banking trend, some smaller institutions let you make deposits from home by scanning your check and then e-mailing it. That's exactly how Clark's brother in Phoenix does his banking with San Antonio-based USAA.
Unfortunately, Clark won't be able to answer any questions submitted via commenting. If you have a question, please try posting it to our message boards.
I don't like them. If they cannot read the amount on a machine-printed check and make me enter it manually, I have no assurance that the bank will credit me with the right amount.
Medicine
They should do this with medicine too. Imagine how much money drug stores could save on phamacists if we all got medicine from a vending machine.
USAA
You actually scan checks through a java applet via their secure website. Emailing wouldn't be a very secure option.
New ATM's Are Great!
On Point Community Bank/Credit Union, Branch Manager Mr. Dave Deveny, uses this new ATM Machine. They are great! And we would highly recommend this bank branch to anyone looking for a small, solvant, community bank or credit union. 1. Gives me a photo copy of all checks we deposit, and logs the denominations of my bills deposited--1's, 5's, 10's, 20's, 50's, and 100's times the number deposited. 2. Takes the cash right out of our hands, no need for envelopes, with deposits slips, or having to write (in Chicken stratch)our account numbers, names etc on outside of the envelopes anymore! 3. Accurate. No agruments on what was deposited in the ATM. Once had a friend clipped for a $500.00 she deposited from proceeds from her garage sale. The bank counted the checks taken from customers but not the cash. She had no way to prove that she also deposited cash. ( we think an early morning teller took it). So, the new ATM's are harder to steal from.
