Jul 13, 2009 -- Straight Talk's $45/month unlimited calling and texting plan

Last month, Clark told you about Straight Talk, a new company offering 1,000 minutes and 1,000 text messages for $30/month.

Now Straight Talk is offering unlimited calling and unlimited texting for $45/month! Verizon, T-Mobile, Sprint and AT&T all charge between $100-$145/month for their unlimited services.

Interestingly, Straight Talk actually uses Verizon's network to place calls. So you can go with Verizon and pay $125/month for unlimited calling and texting or you can go with Straight Talk and use Verizon's infrastructure for $45/month. You do the math.

However, one drawback with Straight Talk is that it won't support any smart phones.

In related news, Metro PCS customers can pay $5 extra for unlimited international calling.

    Straight Talk has purchased wholesale airtime on the Verizon cell network. That is all Straight Talk phones have access to. A Verizon phone also has access to other towers besides ones that belong to Verizon. The national carriers have deals to exchange roaming customer air time between themselves. Straight Talk phones can't roam, this is part of what makes their service cheaper. The coverage map provided by Verizon is not a map of their own private network, but a map of an area that either by their network or by contract with other carriers your Verizon cell phone should receive service. By the way, I have a Samsung r810c Finesse and just started my 3rd month of service. Happy so far.

    In a nutshell....STAY AWAY! Nothing but problems. Sort history, December purchased phone with 445 month unlimited text, web, etc. Try to activate online and porting a number, won't work. Call Straight talk... 41 minutes of wait time to speak to a Mexican that can barely speak English. No problem, I ask if Spanish would be easier and he agrees, Spanish it is. 29 minutes later, all is done, complete with auto payment. Phone to be activated within 2-3 days. 10 Days later, I still have no phone, clients upset over slow response time to their calls etc. Call Straight talk... 53 minutes on hold, and finally, I talk to Raymond who is actually, Ramon whose English is ... not that good! 2 hours later, and multiple times placed on hold, all is well, phone works, for 5 weeks. Turn on phone, can't conect to network. Call support, 37 minutes on hold 56 minutes wth tech support and they decidde my phone is no good, they'll send me another one. I ask, "will it be preset to my nmber, ready to go?" Yes is the answer I get, NO is the answer when 3 days later my phone arrives. Call straight talk, 43 minutes on hold and voila, a tiny Mexican voice comes on the line and my first thoughts are, crap, here we go again. 36 minutes of being placed on hold etc and my phone finally works. Until ffor 10 weeks and suddenly I think they snuck into my house and gave me my original phone back. Same problem, except this time I can't make or receive any phone calls as well as no browser (that very, very slow browser). 28 minutes on hold and I'm back in Mexico, talking to a young lady that after 22 minutes of going back and forth, moves me into the tech support jungle where you never get to talk to anyone and resolutions take days. Today, I'm going to swing by AT&T or Sprint and sign on, it may cost a few $ more, but at least I don;t have to go to Mexico for service... Do I?

    My wife and i decided to get on the straight talk band wagon, unfornately both our cell phones won't let us send out texts, is there a place to get a software update for these things, we called straight talk and they made us reset our phones several times, but we still can't send texts. as anyone else had this problema and been able to solve it.

  • FIX PREPAID DISABLED
    HOW TO FIX PREPAID SERVICE DISABLED. I did this yesterday and it worked!! Use ur home phone or someone else's phone to call the straight talk # (on the website under contact us)then get to the point where u talk to a live person. Tell them your phone says "prepaid service disabled" the guy/girl will then tell u it is because you messed with your code entry mode. DONT DO THAT EVER AGAIN LOL! anyway have ur phone ready so u can give them ur serial #, name, and etc. Make sure he/she repeats everything perfectly. Then eventually he/she will give u a huge long number to enter in code entry mode. Make sure u get it right and push "ok". The guy/girl will call ur phone to test it and other stuff, no big deal. ur phone should then work!!

    If you go to the tracfone website or the net10 website and click on the service/support tab then click technical support....enter your serial number and scroll down on the following menu and click prepaid disable/unit disable. It will give you the codes to enter to unlock your phone I just did it this morning myself for my Samsung SCH-R451c.

    purchased the Samsung R451C for my two teenagers and my husband and I. We love it. We all ported our old numbers over and it took -at max - 2 hrs! We have had our phones since Christmas and we could not be happier! My husband is a traveling consultant and he gets service everywhere! Can't be beat!!
  • quite pleased with Straight Talk after 3 months
    I've been using ST with the Samsung R451C (fill keyboard slides out) and have been thrilled with it. The first month I used the $30 plan and didn't like like minute warning, but I've been told you can disable that. I switched to the $45/month plan. When you set that on autobill with your credit card, the total is $45.89.

    The phone is solid and the service has been pretty good. The internet browser is not particularly good and the internet is slow, but it's been very convenient when I'm on the go. The camera is average quality and not particularly great, but what I expect from a phone camera.

    The phone can connect to your computer via blue tooth, extra memory card (micro SD), and via USB wire (you have to buy this as an extra).

    My biggest disappointment is that you cannot download the address book from the phone with tools like BitPim. You also cannot tether the phone to provide internet access to your computer through the phone.

    Ironically, you cannot buy ringtones for it, but you can upload any old mp3 or midi file from your computer and use it as a ring tone. I've also been unable to find any games that can be used on the phone.

    The unlimited service is fantastic. I had used Virgin Mobile for years and I so enjoy not having to think about minutes at all any more. And I'm thrilled to get all this without a contract.

    WARNING: DO NOT BUY the Samsung slider phone for Straight Talk..it is a piece of crap. It is possessed!!! Seriously! I never dropped mine or anything and it just started going crazy. After I first bought it, I noticed the time on the phone would freeze a lot. For example, it might show that its 3:30 p.m. for like 30 minutes and you have to shut the phone off and cut it back on to see the right time. Also, the buttons on the front started sticking and now none of the buttons on the front work anymore. If you press 2 it gives me a 3 and not just 3, but 3+ like its trying to add. If you press 4 it gives a zero or sometimes just locks the phone. The phone also likes to lock and unlock by itself. Also, a bunch of zeros is constantly popping up on the phone and it will eventually start dialing by itself. The only buttons that half way work right now is the keyboard and I can't hardly text anyone without it putting a zero before, after, and inbetween words. It's crazy!! Also, I leave the phone charging all night and when I first take it off the charger it shows full battery, but 2 hours later if im gone out somewhere even if I haven't even used the phone at all it will start saying low battery. Anothing thing, I would put my phone on silent while at work so it wouldn't go off, but it would still go off when someone text me or called me..like be the total opposite. Of course I changed it back to the sound when I got off work. Now the sound doesn't work at all on my phone. However, my fiance has the razor and it seems to work fine so I am going to change and get that phone! I don't know why my phone is doing that..I haven't done anything to make it act that way. Has anyone else had problems with this phone?

    i am new to this site so please bare with me. I just purchased the unlimited phone card and lg phone, activated it on line and still can't use it and HOW do you get ahold of customer service? i have tried all day it always says push 1 or collect call 2 for pin i enter my calling card pin and it says its too many numbers... HELP lol

    I am so excited about Straight Talk..and reading that it uses the Verizon network to place calls is extremely interesting. Verizon is KNOWN for having great reception. Therefore, Straight Talk's reception must be just as good! Also, unlimited text and unlimited minutes for just $45 per month is just a great deal. You really can't beat that anywhere. I also read that Straight Talk has no contract. This is a great offer. After researching the different options available, I am set on moving to Tracfone. I believe this is just what I have been looking for.

    Bought phone at WalMart (Samsung R451C). Activated online (did NOT port number, afraid I'd get caught in port limbo). Online Activation took about 10 hours, no problem, and phone was working fine, with a local number assigned automatically.

    Called TRACFONE Customer Support (1-800-867-7183). I did NOT mention I had a StraightTalk phone/plan. Gave them my new cell # and Serial #. Asked them to disable the initial "minutes remaining" message. Done in 5 minutes.

    Also asked about disabling Voice Mail (which I don't like). She said do one of 2 things:

    1) Just don't set up your voice mail (don't call it, pick a password, and record a message). Just leave it alone
    or
    2) Ask them to reset your voice mail if you have already set it up.
    ..
    Either way, callers will get a message saying something like "This number does not have voice mail set up." I tried it, it works. Voila!

    If you decide later you want Voice Mail, just call it (*86) and set it up.

    So far, so good. Verizon Network, or near to it. Good call quality (Samsung R451C). $30/month for 1000 texts + 1000 minutes is more than I'll ever need... and no more fighting with Verizon and paying their stupid add-on fees.

    PS: There are some phone accessories available at straighttalk.com (chargers, covers, etc.) but I usually get a case at Dollar General, and a car charger tip at Radio Shack. I've used their iGo charger for years. New phone? Just get a new tip, about $10.

    Skinit.com has vinly sticky covers, just search for Samsung Messenger or r450 if the 451c is not listed yet.

    I live in Mississippi ported my cellular south number to straight talk saturday morning with no problems the entire process happened in about 40 minutes including number port.I read this forum before I purchased there was a lot of negative about porting without the mention of the problem existing from the old phone company involved. I think that if you have all the info such as account number login and password and if you can remember your name I don't see a problem. ALSO for the cry babies that complains about 7 days porting it tells you that when you sign up for straight talk online it tells you this process may take 7 days and you have to agree before you go any further in the process. So for the ones who are thinking about buying that read this first take the negative with a grain of salt. Start and complete process online, if you don't have a computer go to the library. I ended up with Verizon service, unlimited internet, voce, texting, and the 411 service is answered by Verizon information humans. I have to recommend this product you can;t beat it in America for $45 a month.

    I ordered my Samsung phone on Monday December 21st online because Walmart was sold out. Received via Fedex on Thursday December 24th. Decided to activate it Thursday afternoon and transfer my old number which I've had for 5 years. It is a number from Iowa but I have lived in Tennessee for 3 years and decided to keep this number to lessen the headache of informing everyone of my new number. Well this has been a huge problem. It is now Tuesday December 29th and all I get is "it will be another 24 hours". Then this morning I was told I couldn't transfer an Iowa number to Tennessee. Verizon has no issues. WTF? So after seeing red for a few minutes I decided to get a new number, but then they said it would be another 24 hours. I took my phone and info to Walmart and the lady said she could get it turned on. Well, I just left Walmart and they told her it would be 72 hours. Man, sometimes it's worth to pay a little extra and get good service. I have no issues with Verizon other than they are a little expensive. The customer service with VW is great; at least it was for me. If I don't have a phone soon I am definetly switching back to VW!!!

    I just bought one of my daughters a straight talk phone with a $30 card. I am answering some of the questions here about the texts for the 1000 text limit. When you send a text that counts as one, when you receive a text that counts as one as well. So the answer is you get 1000 texts for sent and received combined. So if you do alot of texting, the $45 unlimited card is a better value for you.

    This is my third month with straight-talk and VERY happy!

    I have traveled into multiple states, some very remote, and have had -0- issues with reception (thanks to the Verizon backbone!). I was initially worried that the service would be regionally limited and this was NOT the case.

    To keep things simple for those considering/wanting to take the step:
    1.) buy your phone from Walmart so you can have an easier option for returning the phone if you are upset or if the phone is broken when pulled out of the package.
    2.) if transferring/porting your old cell number-- GIVE THEM A BREAK!! it takes time, and may be a few days, or even weeks, as they have clearly stated in their documentation.
    3.) Buy only the unlimited; if you are worried how they break down your text charges- just go unlimited and there will be no confusion. $15 more for the unlimited is a no-brainer as 1 heavy month of usage would require you $60 spent that month (2 $30 cards!) to keep active. See my point?
    4.) use their auto-pay feature! It will keep you from forgetting to pay or buy a new card. If they over-charge you or double charge: do a charge-back with your credit card company! That speaks loudly to a company working out the bugs!

    I'm currently planning on getting a straigh-talk phone and card, but I have a question. Here's my question..
    For the $30 card, It gives you 1000 talk minutes and 1000 texts, when someone texts you does it count as one of your 1000 texts? For instance, incase I was unclear, I texted my friend, and then they texted back. Would that count as 2 texts, or only one?

After more than 24 hours am told, "should work in 24 hours"! spent a long time on the phone with difficult to understand customer rep who was NO help. If this is normal operating procedure, I can see why it is not catching on.

    I ordered my ST phone from Walmart.com in the event there was a problem I could return it to a local store. So far it has worked perfectly ... yesterday I drove all over some remote areas of Lake Co FL and never dropped a call. The only feature I found annoying is that when you place a call you hear a recording with your remaining minutes before the call goes through - simply call Customer Service and ask them to remove the "Pre-Call Announcement" and they'll do it while you're on the phone. I got right through with no wait time and the change took effect immediately.

    I had an AT&T $39 plan plus $20 for unlimited text (no data) - my bills came to approx $73/mo after all the fees. Now I only pay $30 plus 8% sales tax - $32.40 - and I also have 30Mb data included. More service for less than half the price ... very happy with Straight Talk.

    Same as below Prepaid Service Disabled on the screen. Don't know how this happened. Nothing but problems with this phone Samsung SCH-R451C. Run from Straight Talk...service is crap and the hold time is about 25 mins. per call. Yeah I have all this time to spend on the phone, NOT!
    Beware, this company does not provide any type of reasonable service...RUN!

    I signed up for Straight Talk. Received my phone 4 days later by Fed X. I called Straight Talk to move my existing phone # from ATT and my new Straight Talk phone was working with in 5 minutes. I had a signal every where I went and talk-text-pictures-Internet was working great. I liked it so much I called Straight Talk and singed my credit card up for automatic renewal every 30 days. I got my credit card statement and saw they charged me another $45 8 days after my original service started. I called Straight Talk and after a lot of typing things on the computer and telling me 15 times sorry for the delay that they were verifying every thing they told me Straight Talk does not carry over minutes that you can only add minutes the day you run out or you lose the previous minutes.I told them I originally bought an unlimited 30 day card with the purchase of my phone and then called back to sign up for automatic renewal every 30 days. Finally I demeaned to talk to the supervisor she had been putting me on hold to talk to every 3 minutes. The supervisor and me got the extra charge refunded and (hopefully) I am signed up for automatic renewal.THEN I was trying to lock the keyboard so the phone would not accidental call or take pictures while I carried it in my pocket and I accidently locked the phone up FOR EVER now it shows Prepaid Service Disabled on the screen. It will not make or receive or send calls (makes a good paper weight). WELL Straight Talk said they could not unlock it and they would send me a new one by Fed x. That was last Friday now it is Thursday afternoon. I called them every day this week to see why they haven't emailed me a tracking number for Fed X
    So far they verify my information every day but they don't have a clue why the replacement phone has not been shipped. So here I sit day 7 with no phone and the bad thing is you have to be home to sign for the phone When Fed X bbings it. Does anyone know how to unlock a Samsung SCH-R451C. I would appreciate you help.     I have straight talk and have had no problems with it. I get 1000 min. and 1000 text(or picture) messages it comes with voicemail as well. i personally do not use the internet(terrible eyesight i need large screens lol) but if all you want is to talk and text then i recommend it. I switched from virgin moblie (pre paid) they charged me $20 for just 200 min. for $10 i get so much more and they dont charge you for 411 calls either! i also get better coverage than my mom who has att.. however service depends all on where you live and on the website they have a coverage map(i live in the southeast and the coverage is great) there are many variables you have to consider when buying any cell phone but for the money i believe it is well worth it!

    I'll give this to you straight. This provider sucks! I'm actually reporting them to the FCC. They are in violation of fraud because of charging me for the fractions of minutes when my phone was in the process of being ported, which took 5 days. The FCC defines air time differently than ST, is that legal? As soon as I make a call, my minutes get eaten up with their reminder of how many minutes I have left. When I go to retreive my voice messages I have to listen to a long explanation about what is already in my phone manual and my minutes are being eaten up. My issues are also with the non-American speaking reps who wasted so much of my time on a question/issue that could have easily been answered if one of them knew how to comprehend, not just speak the language. Nowhere on the website does it say you MUST purchase the phone from Walmart or on their site so I, to save money since that's what this is all about, got mine from E-Bay. I just couldn't understand why it wouldn't activate. Duhh! That's when I realized I had to buy their phone that is no good if I decide not to stay with them. So, as many of you are, I am really disappointed with Clark's endorsement of this product. Go figure, a Verizon phone, Net 10 e-mail notification, TracFone plan, and Straighttalk all mixed together out of the Philipines. Even when I called Florida I got a foreigner. I'm not a happy customer and regret cancelling my Verizon account for a cheaper phone plan. I believe the plan is to get you so frustrated with the $35 plan that you switch to the unlimited one.

    I bought the phone and tried to activate it. I gave them my credit card for monthly billing and it is good. After over two days I can't make a call because I get a message saying there isn't enough money. They claim it is still being processed and I'll just have to wait. Horrible service. I'm going to cancel and try someone else who will hopefully do that they say they do. Clark, you need to check these things out BEFORE you willy nilly recommend them. What good is the phone if it is unuseable!

    I use Sprint's Everything plan, and with an employee discount, I pay $102.65 monthly for 2 phones. It includes unlimited calling, text, and data(internet). Check with Sprint to see if you qualify for an employee discount.

    I apologize, I misread your posting, and skimmed some others. I thought you wrote down the names of the other carriers because you wanted to comparison shop. Then when I saw other posters posting about Cricket (which helped me), and Boost Mobile, etc, that reinforced my misread.

    Sorry. But this thread was very helpful.

    P.S. I think others are confused with where it says "other cheap unlimited plans" right above the "Add your comment" section (if you skim fast...you'll miss the details).

    Sorry again, I hope Straight Talk is good. I would like to try it too.

    BUT, it's weird when my old phone (I'd dropped the service for at least a year, but kept the phone as a watch/alarm clock) started receiving voicemail notification and alerts for the person who had my number now. I assumed that the guy (I called my old number--it was still in my phone) was getting his voice messages, but after it kept happening, I called and left him a message (I guess he got it) just in case.

    SO fast-forward to Oct or Nov 2008 when I'm buying a new phone and service plan with them. Ok, so I had the phone for I think 3 days before I decided to return it and get my money back.

    It turns out, when I decided to check the phone to make sure it worked (I had a feeling it was used...), I called MY phone, that was in my pocket at the time, from a school payphone, I left a voice mail message too.

    When I pulled my cell phone out of my pocket, NO missed call, NO voice mail (it didn't even ring).

    Ok, I thought I hadn't missed dialed, but just in case, I try it again, this time with my cell phone in my hand and I watched, NO ring, NO lighting up, NO indication of an incoming call AT ALL....So, I leave a voice mail message for myself, THINKING, ok, MAYBE it only shows up AFTER you decide to leave a voicemail or not (which is SO wrong, but I was broke, and I wanted to give a VERY nice company the benefit of the doubt).

    I leave a voicemail message, MAKE SURE it's delivered. The delivery is confirmed and well...NO voicemail message indicated on the phone, I think I even went home and called the voice mail from a landline (if not dialing it on the phone first), you have NO messages (new OR old!).

    Ok, problem because I ONLY wanted the phone so that I could receive voice mail messages, and calls for jobs that I would be applying to (I was moving, and I wanted to have a contact number on my resume).

    Not to mention, that YEARS ago, metro worked...well...not even in the Metro area that I was living in reliably. It roamed at the place that I was staying, so I couldn't use it...constantly "looking for signal." I thought that years of popularity (more people buying MetroPCS=better coverage...they could buy more towers or something?).

    I was wrong. My younger sibling and his friends along with one of my friend's family members (with the exception of ONE person...not a reliable source of information though) ALL have the same notion of oh, Metro doesn't work here, or there.

    So. VERDICT: MetroPCS may cost you a job offer, or something else. When people leave a voice mail, they kinda assume that you'll get it. So when you Don't return a call, it just looks like you're not interested.

    Porting an existing number is reliant mainly on the carrier you are currently with. Once ST puts in the request to your existing carrier, it becomes a waiting game for your current carrier to release it. The carrier, ST in this case, is at the mercy of your current carrier. Most carriers will do anything to interfere and hold up the process in hopes that you might have a change of heart and stay. ST cust service told me up front it could take anywhere from 2-10 days to port my #, however it took only 3 days. I can't understand how it can be so inconvenient as you still have you current phone service. And if you don't have the patience to wait, just stay with your current carrier and pay twice as much(at least) for the same deal.

    I've been trying to transfer my number to straight talk, I'm currently on day 4 and have just been told we're going to day 5. Don't understand what takes so long, and no one has been able to explain it to me. They tell me to call back in four hours, one hour, half an hour, tomorrow morning, every day for four days. It's torture, and hugely inconvenient.

    I have had this plan for a month and could not be happier. Everything was easy to set up. We ported our land line # to the new ST phone in 3 days. Reception is great even in fringe areas. I have experienced fantastic coverage while traveling around the mid-atlantic coast. Cust service has been great. A few people have moaned about web service. It's obvious ST isn't a pushing a web heavy plan, re: the data amount. But for a plan to make calls and text I don't think anyone else can touch it. A great plan to replace a land line with.
    I agree with a previous poster questioning why so many people post things here about other carriers and plans. I also orig looked here for ST info and don't understand why people post about other carriers plans.

    I have three #'s on this plan. One Rzr and two LG. I have had no problems! I even had one # deactivated due to non-payment on the owner of the #'s part and had no trouble with a VERY helpful American operator. My guess is Phyl called on the weekend. Love it!

    We took Clarks advice and got straight talk. We've had nothing but trouble with the company. If you need help, you get someone in the Phillipines! Never allowed to talk with an American operator. Our service was supposed to be on an auto renewal plan, but the phone got cut off. Was on the phone to the Phillipines, for over 40 minutes (3 different times) trying to get help. Am concerned about the safety of my credit card number. It makes me mad that I have to get help from the Phillipines and NOT from an American.
    Would not recommend this service and if we have any more problems, we will throw the phone away, count our losses and try to find a plan with someone in the U. S. we can talk with.

    Of course you can get cheapo service without web. The other companies are $100 - $145 for unlimited everything, including web.

    Here's the thing though, do I need truly unlimited everything?

    With Verizon I can get unlimited web and texting and 450 minutes with free nights/weekends and free calls to any Verizon number and free calls to whichever 10 numbers I please for $69. With free calls to 10 different numbers I rarely use more than 150 of my anytime minutes.

    If I didn't care about those 10 numbers I could choose t-mobile for $69/mo too. Or Virgin for $65 . . . but then you're stuck using sprint's service, which in my experience, drops calls like nobody's business.

    The "other cheap unlimited plans" Boost and Virgin for $50/mo listed also don't include web. Boost is $100 and Virgin, as I stated, is $65 w/web. And contrary to what Clark always says, both require a 2 yr plan if you want web--and who doesn't want web nowadays? Check or send messages from your web-based email ie yahoo mail or google mail or hotmail. By the way, if you're still using outblaze or whatever else you have to be at your home computer to use, please step out of the early 90's. There are zero advantages and tons of disadvantages. Half of the goodness of email should be that you can check it from anywhere! Back on topic you can get traffic, weather, pull up google maps if your lost . . . or better yet, never get lost and get turn by turn navigation at no add'l cost. That's right, with just about any decent phone you can throw away your GPS!

    Next time, lets make sure we're comparing apples to apples. $30/mo for a basic phone plan is pretty good, but it's not the same as a plan that includes web.

    We loved the direct connect, however stay away from them. Clark was right, they stink. I had 3 phones with them. 2 lines had the contract satisfied, and one didn't. The 3rd line was not getting used at all and I called to see if they would drop the contract on it, or at least comp me something for having to pay for a phone that wasn't being use for 4 months till the contract ran out. I told them I would drop the service on the other 2 lines if they didn't do something. Well they did - they crammed me into another 2 year contract on both phones. They claimed I authorized it, but would give me the name or employee ID of the person that did it Illegal to say least here in Washington State. I had to spend over and hour on the phone with them to back it out & I am going to file a complaint with the state attorney genera's office. BEWARE! Swithced to Straight Talk, and am paying the minimum plan on the one line left with Sprint - canceled the other 2 lines.

    I see your information on virgin mobile usa being among the more reasonable plans. I've been with Virgin Mobile for at least 10 years and love the affordability but the phone service is not what other plans offer. I cannot use my phone in many, many buildings and in order to have a conversation, I need to go to the nearest exit and step outside to make calls or have conversations. I am on my third phone and still have the same problem.

    Boost Mobile was atrocious in Central Florida. Calls were horribly noisy, some were dropped, coverage was sketchy at best. Research online revealed this to be a long-term problem with lots of excuses. Some were even lamer. I recommend not using their overcrowded, below standard service.

    I am going back to MetroPCS or either Straight Talk after being with Verizon for 6 months. The Verizon service is horrible. My Blackberry connection is constantly going off-line. I am also losing alot of calls. All of my friends are tired of paying high cell phone bills-so Straight Talk and Metro PCS here we come. It only makes since to me to save money not waste money.

    I am convinced that most people use their cell phone wastefully. When you really analyze the content of their conversations it is mostly trivial and unnecessary. I’m not talking about someone who needs the phone for business, but rather the private phone user.

    A great example of what I’m talking about is my daughter called me to tell me something totally unimportant, and she did it while she was driving to my house and was only 15 minutes away. She couldn’t wait until she got here? My point is most people don’t really need 1,000 minutes per month, but they use them because they have developed bad habits just as the phone companies planned.

    I have had a Tracfone for about five years and am thoroughly satisfied with it. The coverage is excellent and the service is good. I purchase 1,000 minutes at a time for $100 ant it will last me for almost a year; after all 1,000 minutes is over 16 hours! To me that’s a lot of phone time. Ten cents/min. is high, but it is still costing me only a little over $8.00/ month.

    Don’t complain to me about high cell phone costs, it’s because of your wasteful bad habits.

    I switched from my Verizon plan to straight talk this past month and the coverage went from excellent to terrible. Their customer service is no frills and I realy have nothing nice to say about them. I just switched back to Verizon who I will gladly shell out my $76 a month with unlimited anywhere minutes, unlimited texting and 2 phone lines over the $46.50 for terrible coverage and service. Clark really struck out with this one.

    I have used Net10 since last fall. I drop a few calls in some areas, but for the most part, I am happy with the service and have used it across the U.S. I am spending $15 a month. All calls are 10 cents a minute with texts costing 5 cents.

    The phone is an LG 600 w/ Bluetooth. I was spending $50 a month w/ Verizon before. I recommend Net10.

    AT&T charges me $49.99 for 450 minutes per month plus $9.99 for Text (300)plus
    $9.99 for being able to talk on the phone after 7pm without being charged, plus junk fees the total usually runs $70.03 per month! I have another year on the current contract so tell me when another company will help people out of contracts to switch to their company which charges less. These tough economic times we are all hurting. I don't use my phone during the day but have to wait until 7pm. What a crock!

  • Straight Talk good for regular folks
    I've been with Straight Talk for 3 months. I switched from Verizon, where I was paying $60 plus another $12 in junk fees for only 900 minutes voice (no txt, no web, no data). ST now gives me 1000 minutes/1000 txts/30MB data for half that price, and no junk fees. Total monthly bill is $30 plus $1.43 for tax.

    Portability from VZW occurred in 24 hours after activation. The support person was probably non-US, judging from the accent, but their process was straightforward (no pun intended) and the changeover was quick and painless.

    My experience is that Straight Talk provides basic service with good coverage. No, it doesn't support every cell phone model available. No, it's not for international calling. It does what I need it to do: call anyone in the US with good call reliability, no contract, and inexpensive cell phones. No thanks VZW, I don't want to pay $500 for your entry-level phone AND have my contract extended for another year.

    Note: Power users go elsewhere. If you need good call reliability with relatively inexpensive phones, consider ST.

    Well Tracfone runs it. Just go look for some of the no-support horror stories about them. I understand Wal-mart and Verizon are partners with them. From the coverage map post, I conclude it is native Verizon (with Alltel?) coverage. One of the better coverage maps if you can stand CDMA.

    The phone selection is pretty rotten. Like all RAZR phones, theirs is lousy. W385 would be similar, possibly better, and the LG is essentially a $10 Virgin Mobile Aloha. It isn't so much that no "smart" phones are allowed. [b]No decent phones are allowed![/b]

    Then they have a this in their terms: "You agree not to tamper with or alter your Straight Talk phone or its software... Improper, illegal or unauthorized use of your Straight Talk phone may result in immediate discontinuance of Service."

    It has precedent. TracFone has been known to render their own phones inoperable. Worst of the worse, I declare. Do better: Get yourself a nice used CDMA Razr, flash it with Cricket firmware, and get yourself an account.

    sure you can try these new companies with cheap rates, but the service and the reliability you need when you travel to other states far out way the "dollar" you save. I don't want the hassle, or the concern of what if I need to make a call and there are no signals. sure other companies might run into this problem, but you can usually find a signal quickly.

  • Straight Talk Unlimited Great So Far
    We were looking for a reason to get rid of our land line and have finally found it. The total for ST's unlimited plan with taxes and fee's is about 46.60, which is almost identical to what our 24.95 land line totaled after taxes. The plus is we now get unlimited long distance and can take the phone with us. I ordered the phone online from Walmart and had it in 3 days delivered to my local store. It took 2 days to port our existing number, although we were told it could take much longer. Customer service was always very polite/knowledgeable and I never found anyone that had an accent so bad I couldn't understand them. I bought the W85 for 80$. Yes, there are only 3 phones offered are are not the most feature laden. But, for phone use and texting are fine. I do not plan on using the data so it is a moot point to me that the phones are not that great for web access. The phone gets a better signal and is clearer than my expensive ATT smart phone. We are able to get a signal at remote places where my ATT phone gets no signal. I think this is a great plan to replace a land line. I plan to set it up to auto pay from my credit card so I don't have to refill it each month. Also, we will keep track of the minutes each month, and if we consistently use under 1000 minutes we will switch to the 30$ plan.

    I have used Virgin Mobile for 4 years now, and have always been satisfied... until last week. Somehow I was "signed up" for a news texting service, charged $9.99 and sent 7 text messages at .15 each. That's money that came directly out of my balance, and I never signed up for anything! After filing a complaint with the BBB, Virgin Mobile refunded the charges, but I had to really get ugly with them.

  • Frustrated with Straight Talk
    I just switched to Straight Talk, and I am so frustrated. It took a week to activate the phone even though I was moving a phone number from Tracfone to Straight Talk, both owned by the same company (I think). I still cannot access the Internet from my phone. When I call customer service, they tell me they can't do anything to help until I call from a different phone - kind of defeats the purpose of having a cell phone. Additionally, when I call Straight Talk, I have to wait 5-10 minutes for a customer service person. Then when I do have someone who helps me, the person is often very hard to understand and repeatedly says condescending and patronizing things such as "Thank you so much for being so patient." If you want to contact someone at Straight Talk, you have only 2 options: make a phone call and wait for a representative (while your cell minutes click away) or contact them through snail mail. The website does not even list an email address! I am frustrated and would not recommend Straight Talk to anyone until their phones and service improve!

I already pay $40 a month for unlimited minutes and texting alone, with Sprint. I get a small discount, and I don't want the other stuff, but if I did, yes I would pay it.

    if you look at cricket closely you will notice that the unlimited plans don't include any roaming. that is how they make money. it is unlimited in your home city and then when you leave they tack on roaming charges. i thought roaming charges were a thing of the past.

    The international rates Metro PCS has for unlimited calls around the world from your cell phone will put phone cards out of business! Only $5 extra unlimited calling to your most countries. If thats not saving you and your family money every month, I don't know what will. (I just didn't think it was fair for a one sentence mention about Metro PCS's international calling service, which is why I commented...)

    Also MetroPCS can put Verizon, Sprint, Cricket, Boost mobile, Alltell phones on Metro PCS service. All plans include unlimited calling without a contract and first month free for new customers. Now granted they are without picture messaging and internet on the phones mentioned from different companies, but in this economy it comes down to the bottom line...cost. You can spend some more money and get a Metro PCS phone with all features including GPS, unlimited Data, text, and calling (now also including Blackberry service) for $50 a month. The bottom line with Metro PCS is cost to the consumer overall. The highest plan they have currently is $50, and there will never be any mysterious overage charges or $200 early cancellation fees.
    If you are worried about coverage, you need to see their coverage map which includes over 4000 cities and towns including New York, Chicago, most of FL, LA, and too many more to list.
    I have been with metro for years so I am an avid supporter...
    You will be doing your relatives and friends a favor by suggesting Metro, I know I am.

    I switched to Straight Talk from Verizon because of the lower priced plan. I was expecting a drop in service commensurate with the drop in price, but I was shocked by how terrible the service is. After spending 3 hours on the phone with people that can barely speak english, I found out that there is no online support for customers that switch over from Verizon (the network they use). I made it through the first month and had no idea when I was out of minutes because I couldn't check and they told me to call back to setup auto refill which is possible only the day before you run out of minutes. The date they gave me was July 30th so when I ran out ahead of time I called customer service the next morning (this morning). My cell number which I have had for 5 years is no longer associated with my phone(I'm probably going to lose my number). Worst of all the customer service person mentioned the problem with my account and when I asked to speak with a manager who was unavailable she quickly took my credit card number to refill my account and assured me my phone would work. After an hour it still doesn't work. Calling them back to cancel my phone, try and save my number, and get this months bill refunded. STRAIGHT TALK IS ANYTHING BUT WHAT THE NAME INDICATES.
