Jul 10, 2009 -- Google Voice out of beta

Google's latest free service, Google Voice, is being rolled out to the general public after beta-testing among an initial audience of former GrandCentral users.

Google Voice offers users a single number for their cell, home phone, office phone and more to ring on. Other features include free voicemail, call forwarding and conference calling.

It also offers free unlimited long distance calling in the United States and cheap calls overseas. This could be very beneficial for someone with a monopoly landline who has to pay for expensive long distance calls.

With the voicemail feature, you're able to listen in as voicemails are being left and pick up in the middle of the call -- just like you would with an answering machine. You can also have voicemails automatically converted into a text message!

This is a lot of functionality wrapped up into one package.

So how do you get it? Go to Google.com/Voice to watch an introductory video and Google.com/VoiceInvite to get in the queue as new users are added.

What others are saying

  • Google voice invite
Invites are available for purchase on Ebay. I got 3 invites for three separate numbers for .99!!!
  • Mobile to Mobile
I like Google Voice and use it to combine my phones while I travel. One thing to note is that you lose the benefit of mobile to mobile minutes when you are using Google Voice on your cell phone. Pay attention to the number of minutes that you use as Mobile to Mobile on your wireless before jumping in head first with your wireless. The increased number of billable airtime may bite you.
  • Google Voice
Signed up for Google Voice today, but I'm not sure what the big deal is. I already have free nationwide calling on my cell phone - unlimited minutes. I don't travel overseas, so I'm not sure I have much use for this service.

Plus, their ability to "save" my voice mails online and transcribe them kinda creeps me out.
  • google voice
LOVE GOOGLE VOICE!!! cheap calls overseas, free calls within the U.S. plus voicemail feature is GREAT "Listen in as voicemails are being left and pick up in the middle of the call" and with the new goolge app for blackberry, No need to be on a computer to place a call.
  • Google Voice
I was invited, out of the blue, and tried Google Voice. It amazes me how easy it made it for me to place a U.S. long distance call for free from my monopoly land-line phone, so that's the end of long-distance charges and pre-paid phone cards, and even "Skype-to-go" until they make that free. Drawbacks: you cannot add money in smaller increments than $10 for international long distance, and SMS from overseas does not seem to get to the Google Voice phone number from overseas at all. On the other hand, I was able to SMS from the Web to a phone in Hong Kong--for free--which I wasn't supposed to be able to do, so that might be a bug. There ain't no such thing as a free lunch, though, so I'm wondering how long the party is going to last.
  • Grand Central
I have been on grand central now for about 2 years. It has improved since google bought it. The unlimited capacity of the voice mail and the number for life concepts are the best features. Thanks for the tips...
  • Google Voice
Due to Clark's outstanding recommendation joined Google voice and couldn't be happier. Once Google gets into the cellular business it will change the way the "old school" cell business is run. Thanks Clark for all your work and thanks Google.
