Jul 01, 2009 -- Using governors to limit top speeds on trucks

Clark upsets truckers whenever he talks about governors on trucks...and we're not talking about Mark Sanford on an 18-wheeler! Governors are simply micro-chip controlled motors that only allow a preset top speed.

Such devices are especially common on the kinds of trucks you would rent to move yourself. They're a built-in safety feature because the moving companies know these rentals are usually driven by motorists that don't regularly drive trucks.

Wal-Mart had governors put on all its trucks, a move that greatly reduced their fleet's accident rate. That's also why Wal-Mart trucks go slower than other trucks on the road.

Steve Owings is a crusader for a nationwide law to limit the speed that trucks can go. He's a Don Quixote of sorts who's gotten some unlikely support from industry group the American Trucking Association (ATA). The consumer champ is a big fan of governors too.

Some Libertarian groups are opposed to governors, as are some independent truck drivers not affiliated with ATA.

Truckers say it's the cars on the road that are the real problem, especially motorists who jack-rabbit around tractor trailers.

15% of all fatalities in road accidents involve a car and a truck. It isn't the truck driver who winds up getting injured or killed, either.

Remember this key rule: Get out of the way of a truck or you could wind up dead.

What others are saying

  • GOVERNED TRUCKS
I THINK TRUCKS THAT ARE GOVERNED ARE UNSAFE, BECAUSE TRUCKS THAT ARE NOT GOVERNED CAN COME UP ON RATHER FAST AND IF THERE NOT WATCHING WHAT THERE DOIN SOMEONE GOING TO GET HURT. 4 WHEELERS ARE OUR MAIN PROBLEM ON THE ROAD THEY CUT YOU OFF. A TRUCK GOING 55 IS GOING TO DO THE SAME DAMAGE AS A TRUCK GOING 70, AT 80,000LBS. SO ALL UR DOING TO USE IS MAKING USE SEATING DUCKS, WHY SO YOU CAN SAVE $ ON FUEL PLEASE.
  • Truck Governor
how do i un-govern my truck? it only goes 63mph
  • All vehicles should be speed controlled
Are 4 wheeled autos involded in accidents not involving tractor trailers?

    Yes

Do people die in those accidents?

    Yes

Is excessive speed often a cotributing factor?

    Yes

ALL vehicles should be speed controlled to go the same maximum speed.

You don't like the way truckers drive so you demand that they change for your safety. I don't like the way "4 wheelers" drive (when I am in my big truck or my small car) so it is only fair that I demand all cars to change for my, and your, safety.

I drive the speed limit and as safetly as possible. Don't punish me for someone else's actions.
  • Speed limiters
I think first of all the only people making regulations should be people who have spent a month or two in a truck and know the real story. Cars and their impatient drivers are the biggest problem. What no one here has discussed and is very important is that owner/operators...they don't get paid if they are off the road..so wrecks are not something they want to be in...that truck cost upwards or over 100,000 and the paycheck stops instantly if they can't drive it. My husband runs our truck and he drives the speed limit, follows the rules and the only problems he's ever had were caused by the car....He's a professional driver...and has never had a ticket or caused an accident in his truck or our car. Another point to think of is how difficult your life would when every state has DIFFERENT rules...different speeds, load limits etc. They have a hard job and most people treat them like a dumb driver. Lets see everyone putting them down figure out how to load a truck to be legal, follow the rules in 6 states when going to unload and then make sure he is legally strapped. I look at it this way..you're driving on their job site..so be respectful and if you see a bad trucker speeding or being unsafe...CALL IT IN! Truckers that follow the rules don't like them any better than you. We've had one back into our truck...if you can't back up a semi with trailer..you shouldn't be driving!
  • Governors
    To Charles in SC:
You want all trucks nationwide to be governed to 55. When your new car costs $35,000 instead of $30,000, your stereo costs $1300 instead of $1000, and your loar of bread costs $2.99 instead of $1.29, let me know how you like that. Oh, and by the way, an 80,000 pound vehicle traveling at 55 will kill you just as dead as one going 70.
  • governors
As some have stated, thee problem is not the trucks but the morons who are on the road with them. You cut in when a tractor slows down for safety space in front, yoyu think because you pay taxes you can ignore the rule of slower traffic keep to the right, and you can't get the stupid cell phone out of you're ear because your "dying" to talk nonsense to someone at the other end. These are the imbeciles that should be regulated off the road.Sure, there are a few bad truck drivers out there, but for the most part they are a bunch of hard working men and women who are trying to make a living in this hard economy.Just let them stop driving for one week and you whining idiots won't have to worry about it, because you won't have gas to go on the roads, or food to eat, or anything else.So shut up ,get out of the way, get your heads out of your behinds and learn how to drive with respect on the roads, and thank a trucker when you can!
  • governors
why limit it to trucks only?
    why not all vehicles?
  • question regarding governors on trucks
a "co-worker" who's husband is a truck driver says "ALL TRUCKS HAVE GOVERNORS SO THEY CAN'T GO OVER 65". I'm saying - I don't think so..... Help settle a bet. please......
  • traffic deaths
40,000 deaths a year is the last number i heard on traffic accidents. sounds like every vehicle governed at 70 mph top speed would save lives.
  • Governors
What we do not have in USA are Tac-a-graphs. This instrument is common in big rigs in Europe. It simply records a drivers speed on a chart over 24 hour charting periods. By most European laws, a big rig driver can be ticketed for speeding if the graph shows hey have exceeded the speed limit.

A tac-a-graph does the same thing as a governor/cruise control, except that it gives the driver the flexibility of speed and power in situations like uphill climbs and passing of slower vehicles.
Think about it... a truck governed at 62 mph passing anothertruck gverned at 61mph can hold a lot of traffic up trying to pass.
  • high milage cars
If you were to look at the reality of cost. there are devices with a proved track record of getting 30+ mpg on an suv. With out buying a bicycle. go to picc.com to find out the answer. people don't need a new truck ,they can make their old one a hybrid instead. at the fraction of the cost. stop trying to bankrupt people with your green ideas! Look and evaluate great products in the wings that are just waiting for you to find them.
  • Govenors on trucks
I am a truck driver and a speeding truck can kill me. My company limits our speed at 65mph. It is fast enough. With cell phones and computers in trucks they don't need to go any faster.
  • Govenors on trucks
If you are going to govern the speed with mechanical/electronic devices on the big rigs, than the same should be done to the cars, light trucks, and motorcycles. A large number of companies currently have govenors set at 62 mph on their trucks to save fuel and for safety. The main reason is fuel and making sure drivers do not get as many speeding tickets. But doing this does create some hazards to faster vehicles that come up on them rather quickly.
  • Governors on vehicles
I have no problem with governors on big rigs if you also put governors on every other vehicle on the road. I drive a motorhome and cruise at 60 to 65 mph. I see more cars, pickups and motorcycles speeding than I see truckers. Truckers don't cut in and out of traffic like cars, pickups and motorcycles do. So if governors are placed on big rigs; also put them on cars, pickups and motorcycles at a slower speed than the big rigs.

(AP)Police said they will give prosecutors the results of their investigation to decide whether to bring any charges after the chain-reaction crash on the turnpike that saw some victims pinned in the wreckage for up to nine hours.

Twelve-year-old Andrea Reyes of Phoenix, Ariz., suffered head and internal injuries when her family's Land Rover that was crushed. She was critical condition at Children's Mercy Hospital in Kansas City, Kan., the Oklahoma Highway Patrol said. Her parents, Ricardo Reyes, 39, and her mother, Ernestina Reyes, were killed.

Authorities said another survivor, Shelby Hayes, 35, of Frisco, Texas, was pinned in the wreckage of her vehicle for about two hours before being admitted to a hospital in Joplin, Mo., in critical condition. Two others with her, Randall Hayes, 38, and Ethan Hayes, 7, were killed.

Police said the other victims were Cynthia Olson, 55, of Crossroads, Texas, and Oral Hooks, 69, Earlene Hooks, 63, Antonio Hooks, 42, and Dione Hooks, 41, all of Oklahoma City.

The driver of the tractor-trailer, whom they identified as 76-year-old Donald Creed of Willard, Mo., was admitted to a Missouri hospital in good condition with head and other injuries.

Oklahoma Highway Patrol Lt. George Brown said a criminal investigation is under way, as is routine after a fatal accident, and blood was drawn from the truck driver. There was no indication alcohol was involved, he said.

Patrol Capt. Chris West said local prosecutors will decide if any charges are warranted after the investigation is complete.

An earlier crash had stopped eastbound traffic on the Will Rogers Turnpike on Friday when the big rig slammed into at least three cars, which then crashed into more vehicles, Brown said.

The turnpike's eastbound lanes were closed for hours after the accident, which occurred near the border with Missouri and
  • As much as I hate the idea, it's a good one
Governors save lives, no doubt about it. That being said, it's just a way to enforce the law anyway isn't it? Couldn't all cars have a governor set at whatever the max speed limit is, I think it's 80 in parts of Montana and Mississippi, sounds like plenty to me.

There's really no good argument against that is there? What, "I should be able to break the law if I feel like it?" For the enthusiasts out there, remember, I didn't say how fast you could get up to 80 . . . smoke 'em if you got 'em, right?
  • truck governors
A big Yes for truck governors. As our government demands smaller and smaller vehicles, we won't stand a chance! How about a "governor" on all that is gushing out of DC??
  • Behind me
I'd settle for a law proscribing trucks from tailgating me on the Interstate when I'm already going 5 to 10 MPH over the limit. Why are you less than 50 feet behind me?
  • Solution
If people hate trucks so much, Then quit buying stuff at the store and tell your employer that you don't want new equipment for work that trucks bring and pay off your averages of $12,ooo in credit card debt instead. I can only think of 2 things are not hauled by truck. Tap water and electricity.
I compare governors to Nascar restrictor plates. Takes 4 miles for two 65 mph trucks to pass one another. Then we have 50 cars behind, all bunched up, so the chances of a multicar pile up increase when the left lane clears and they (cars) are giving dirty looks to the trucks instead of watching the brake slammer in front of them.
  • speed governors for 18 wheelers
I have been a traveling salesman for 35 years. The most dangerous thing on the highway, except possibly the drunk driver, is the speeding 18 wheeler. They should all be limited to 55mph nationwide, with a governor to enforce the law. This one action would save countless deaths and injuries, mostly to 4 wheel drivers I might add. This would be good for the fuel crunch, and wonderful for most of the driving public's nerves. Also, they tear up the roads, and no, I don't care how much extra tax they pay.
  • Govenors on Trucks and Recreational Veh.
I feel this would be a great idea for Recreational Vehicles with 30ft. Lengths and better. I'm a retired Truck Driver and have seen many accidents.
  • Truck speed
I think trucks should drive as fast ad cars where roads are basically straight. If we all drove about the same speed we wouldn't have so many chances to collide with the big rigs.
I once drove a rental truck across much of the country and really enjoyed the states that had the same 75 MPH speed limit for trucks as cars. I do think that on hilly and windy roads that trucks should definitely go slower, but on straight roads, I feel safer when the trucks drive at the car's speed limit.

  • All should be limited
I drive an 18 wheeler and have done so for 11 years. I drive a governed truck that goes 68mph but has an option to pass with aproximately 3 more mph for 30 minutes every ten hours. This is very acceptable to me and provides a safe speed, ability to pass, and enough speed to make a living. All vehicles should be speed restricted at some limit arrived at by law. I don't understand how cars or trucks are allowed the ability to break the speed laws of every state in the union. Uniform speed for all vehicles would reduce the unnecessary slaughter on our highways by the general reduction of speed, reducing the lane changing that causes so many accidents, and reduce the tailgating so many aggressive drivers use to intimidate others. Slow drivers should also be forced to a minimum speed to keep the flow of traffic more consistant. Many of the minimums on the signs now are just too slow to provide for a safe flow. With uniform speeds and some common sense on being considerate, I believe we could be safer and more relaxed in our drives. All truckers are not out to get smaller vehicles nor are all cars inconsiderate, we are all in a hurry to get where we want in a system that lets egos control our emotions and our lead feet.
  • Truck Governors
I bought a 2008 Ford Ranger, new. The first time I attempted to go more than 80 mph, the engine started making a funny noise, and the truck would not accelerate. I called the dealer, and was informed that the truck was equipped with a system, which he named, and the situation I described was "normal". I protested rather forcefully, and informed him that had I been told the truck had a governor installed on it, I would not have purchased the vehicle. Car dealers should be required to advise potential buyers that "big brother" has decided the performance level of the vehicle, and there is nothing you can do about it. This is just another example of government interfering in our private lives. We need to take a look around us regarding the freedoms that are being stealthily eroded by the elitests in Washington !!
  • Truck govenors
There are new signs up on Georgia Interstates that says give clearance to trucks or get a ticket. I say truckers, don't jam up the right lanes and keep "fourwheelers" from getting in your lane to get further to the left lanes. Contrary to what you believe, TRUCKERS DO NOT OWN THE ROAD!!!!
  • govenors on trucks
i have a friend who is a truck driver and he talks about fixing his paperwork so that it shows that he is only driving a certain amount of hours a day. for this reason, i am for governors on trucks. maybe it will slow him down and he has no choice but to be on the road for a dedicated amount of hours per day.
  • Trucks, governors and safety issues...
I don’t believe in mandating the use of governors for trucks. If a company or independent wants to use them, that is different. That said, I do think some things need to change with trucking laws and safety standards: - Out law the use of retread tires. 'Tired' of dodging large rubber strips on the highways which cause accidents. - Out law trucks in the Left-lane of interstate highways (same law as used in GA and some other states). Keeps traffic flowing more smoothly and reduces traffic bog downs. Trucks should not be in the left lane(s) of any interstate highway. There is no need except in emergencies and when mandated for safety. This single law would dramatically reduce the instances were cars cut around trucks on the right and reduce the instances where cars weave in-and-out of the path of trucks. - 80 down the hill and 40 up the hill or blowing by the car while running down a hill to maintain momentum to go up a hill. Applies to the left lane and the use of governors. A truck should simply stay in the right lane; maintain the speed limit and when momentum slows the truck down, simply turn-on safety flashers. Cars can safely and efficiently pass on the left side of the truck. - Mandate the use of spray reducers which go around the trailer or truck cargo area (currently used in EU). Tired of zero visibility when near a truck when it rains. - Check for hanging chains, attachments and in particular the chrome attachments which seem to find their way on the road surface when inspecting trucks at truck safety checks or during weigh stations (‘chicken coops’ as the truckers say). Truckers believe that hanging chains are normal for car carriers (parking lots). They are a safety hazard generating a combustible spark as they travel down the road. - Out law the use of dump trucks that are not ‘completely’ covered and sealed prior to driving on any road. Too many broken windshields and those ‘I am not responsible for anything from the road’ signs are ridiculous. If it comes from your truck, bounces off the road and hits another vehicle causing damage; yes, you are responsible. - Lane merging. Trucks seem to take it as their 'code of ethics' to hold cars in lanes instead of letting traffic flow naturally and merge normally. - Governor pass. Truck one is governed at 55. Truck two is governed at 56. Truck two passes truck one and takes five miles to complete the pass. Meanwhile a ten mile backup has built-up behind the passing truck two. Once completed, truck two is now able to travel 1 mile an hour faster, which accomplishes absolutely nothing. - Rest stops – Provide tuck dedicated areas and car dedicated areas. Seems that most rest stops are inundated with trucks at night and no room for a car. Share the facilities, we also pay taxes…
  • Truck Speed Goveners
Clark I think you are misinformed on this. You should someday soon ride in an 18 wheeler for some distance, you will come away with a different opinion.
The Oregon & Wash. State Patrols recently have done ride along enforcement trips in the Cabs of Semi's
Car received tickets for cutting of Trucks, illegal lane changes etc. Why don't we govenor Car also, how many times have you been passed by a jerk going 20-25 MPH over the limit. A split speed limit on a 2 lane each way road a traffic bottleneck that cause impatient car drivers to due supid things. Go drive your small car and so a Truck some respect and you will receive it in return. I could vent a lot more but I have to earn a living.
  • governors on trucks
this is for jeanne in anchorage alaska. you say you want to see trucks slowed,to save lives. this was tried 20 years ago. it was called "split speed limit". after several years of 55 mph truck limit, and 65 or 70 auto limit someone finally realized that the disparity in the speed limit had in fact caused "MORE DEATHS"and was finally repealed in most states. The states that still have the split limit, which you can count on 1 hand, keep it in place as a "revenue getter"
  • Trucks that hit stalled traffic on road/freeway.
When there is shut down of roadway due to weather or wreck people can't get out of the way. It happens more often lately or it's reported better, that large trucks don't stop and people in cars are killed.
  • governors
I have driven trucks for 40 yrs. There are some "bad apples"ot there. I find that most car/truck accidents are caused by the unattentive uncaring "4 whleeler"Education, not speed reduction is the answer. Most trucks owned by the major corporations are already governored to 65-70 mph. What do they want us to do? just creep along"? That new tv or car or your grocerices would cost more because of the extra time taken to deliver. Emphatic NO for "more" governing. Yes to education of the public on weaving "in and out", quick stopping, and the forever famous "cutoff"
  • governors on trucks
for the ones that call truckers an annoyance, remember how your food gets to the store.Instead of governors, please educate the "4"wheeler public
  • governors on trucks
most major companies set their truck speeds at 65-70 by co mechanics.the slower you go the more likelyhood of an accident.autos are not considerate
  • govenors on trucks
I'm sorry but I think we have enough rules and regulations. Stay out of my life! If everyone would be polite drivers and use common sense this wouldn't be a problem. The people driving trucks with govenors already are causing a hazzard by going too slow in a single lane highway and people wanting to pass them taking chances on curvy or hilly roads. I'm not so sure it's the truck drivers fault. If they put govenors on all vehicles who's to say what speed is safe? The areas with no traffic and long stretches do not need govenors.
If I want to pass someone I sure would like to know I have enough speed to pass them. The government is much to involved with our lives. If they want to do something constructive make it impossible for people that are intoxicated to drive a car.
  • I am a truck driver.
Commercial trucks are involved in about 2% of the automotive accidents that happen nation wide. If you want to improve road safety, install governors on BOTH trucks and cars. If you aren't willing to install governors in cars, the least you can do it enforce the speed limits for all vehicles. Today's traffic laws are woefully unenforced.

Don't just target truck drivers when they are not the problem. Treat all drivers equally.
  • Truck speed
All I can say is that it is a pleasure to drive in states that have a 10mph highway speed differential between trucks and cars that is enforced.

You can count on the trucks being in the right hand lane and not tailgating. Their mantra seems to be to not slow down no matter what.
  • governors on trucks
My husband is a truck driver and he is always talking about 4 wheelers and how they drive. He says 4 wheelers don't respect trucks and are always driving stupid and dangerous around them. So I think the trucks should go at the regular speed limit.
  • Truck governors
Truck governors are silly... I live in OH were we have disparate speeds legislated by law. Trucks are forced to 55mph. We have no measureable increase in safety as compared to other states. The nature of my job has me logging anywhere from 0 to 350 miles a day. I would feel much safer if we moved everyone to at least 65. As for your governors, that's fine as long as they are set at no lower than 105 mph. Quite frankly 65 is too slow. Out west they do 75 and 85 quite well. I lived in Italy and Germany and drove the autostrada all the time at much higher speeds. I would advocate driver training and licensing be MUCH more selective and more costly vs. regulation to the lowest common denomintor. In this case Clark needs to take his own advice and let the marketplace determine safe traveling speed, not the nanny state.
  • Truck Speeds aren't the real problem
In the US, we love to blame speed for everything, but other countries repeatedly prove high speeds and safety can co-exist. The real problem is poor training. If we took the approach of Germany or UK, we could save TONS of money by not building cars that can compensate for idiocy.

Like Sammy said, the problem with truck governors comes when one governed to 56.5 mph passes another governed to 56. Meanwhile, double stacks of drivers behind become irate. Is it any wonder they take poor chances to get by?
  • Speedy
How about something to stop two trucks traveling side-by-side for miles while the line of cars back up behind them?
  • Trucks
I wish the US would adopt the European practice of restricting large trucks to the right hand lane of multi-lane highways. How often have you been trapped by these road hogs attempting yo "pass" one another?
  • Truck Trains
I just want to comment on the Truck train situations some have proposed. If this would be a problem would it not already be? Most trucks drive at about the same speed already. I drive over 150 miles a day so I get a lot of observation hours myself. Most trucks actually drive the same as I do, at about 5 miles per hour over the speed limit and there are no truck trains. Well sometimes there are two or three who probably got on the highway at the same time 100 miles back. I think governors on all cars is a good idea and I agree with the 82 mile per hour high. I have been in situations where I needed to have high speed to get around something. But there is never a reason to go over 82. I really do not see a problem at a 75 high but have once or twice in the last 10 years needed more. There is never a reason to drive over 80 and this is especially the case for trucks. I recently saw a truck doing around 85, I saw him fly up so I followed him to see what speed he was doing. That is not acceptable. I agree that Drivers should get paid hourly not per mile, or at least come up with a better compensation system that will take the need to be unsafe out of the equation. I only do 5 over as I have found it to be safer to deal with all the idiots that are doing 10-20 over. I would prefer to do the speed limit. I am not Christian but I urge all the speeders and those who drive unsafe who are Christian to look to their bibles and see what Jesus would do. Does he want to to break the law? NO. Does he want you to put your fellow man in danger? NO. Does he want to you be rude and inconsiderate? NO. Not to be preachy but everyone wants to claim America is a Christian nation but does not want to follow the person they claim to believe in.
  • Accidents between Cars & Trucks
If you want to be more accurate, it's 75% of all accidents between cars & big rigs are CAUSED by the cars. See this on Dot.gov.Don't always be so quick to blame truck drivers for accidents.People do this for insurance payoffs as well. * DON'T CUT IN FRONT OF BIG RIG and clip the truck's front bumper trying to change lanes. * DON'T PASS ON RIGHT!! Trucks often change lanes to go around a vehicle(s) on the side of the road, then they get back over. Don't be too impatient waiting for the truck to get back into the right lane. When you pass on the right side of a truck, YOU ARE IN THE TRUCK'S BLIND SPOT. Despite all the mirrors, it's hard to see a small 4-wheeler sitting in blind spot. * DON'T PUT YOURSELF IN HARMS WAY. Steer clear of trucks. Give them lots of room. Truckers try hard every day to NOT run over and kill bad car drivers. You should thank a trucker for their safety (for the most part), and thank a trucker for the things in your life that you enjoy. Stereo, car, clothes, home, jewelry, music, stuff, etc..

  • Speed Goveners on Big Rig Trucks
Most trucks already have them. They've had them for over 10 years.Cars need speed goveners!!ADVICE FOR CAR DRIVERS: Don't speed up when a truck has blinker on to change lanes.Don't speed up to block truck.* STOP BEHIND WHITE LINES at intersections.Trucks need clearance for their trailer turning.* DON'T PARK IN TRUCK PARKING in rest areas & travel plazas.Cars can park anywhere, trucks cannot. You're taking a parking spot away from a tired trucker that needs sleep.* Most trucks have company phone numbers on truck & trailer. * DON'T STOP IN FRONT OF A TRUCK!! if you can help it.Move off the road.If you are on a offramp, if truck coming behind you is coming too fast, Get out of the way!! Driver may not be paying attention, you get rearended and die. Be alert.* DO THE SPEED LIMIT everywhere, especially in commerce areas like gas stations, shopping centers. This makes it easier for vehicles to pull out into traffic and/or pull into business driveways. If you are going too fast, you upset the timing of the other vehicles on the road. By timing, I mean, they time it to pull out into traffic. They often have to jackrabbit out into traffic due to too high speed by other vechicles on the road. I am a truck driver. • chris using wrong example
his point is any moving vehicle over 1ton should have this.unless he is riding on 2 wheles.he wants one for himself.most all cars weigh over 2ooo pounds.the best i can remember the interstate system was made for military&commerical use.so if he rides on interstate he is the annoyance to us.if you dont think trucking is regulated.go to your local dot. get rules®. books including log book and see if you can follow same rules in car.
  • Limiting trucks and cars
82 mph is a reasonable speed to be governed at. No need to burn 25 % more fuel in a vehicle that already gets 6 mpg. Most truckers drive about the same speed which is over 60 and well under 80.
  • 80 MPH
There are 80 mph limits in Texes and alot of states have 75 mph limits. Limiting all trucks is foolish. in the end you would end up with 30 and 40 long truck trains moving down the road unable to pass each other.
  • Governors
Why not put governors on all vehicles? The maximum speed limit in the US is 70 mph anyway.
  • Governors on BIGRIGS. Y-E-S
This should be a federal LAW for all semi tractor-trailers and any moving vehicle that weighs over 1 ton. If there is anyone that needs to stay at or under 65MPH it's heavy trucks. Make this law and make the punishment for anyone that disables or modifies the governor SEVERE. I really don't blame truckers for anything other than being an annoyance on the road, it's the companies they work for or contract through that put the pressure on truckers to be quick and safe, almost an oxymoron. I know it's the cars, light trucks, motorcycles and SUVs that do most of the death on the road, DAH. But trucking is an industry that CAN and SHOULD be heavily regulated. And if being a trucker is just too tough and/or expensive, make a career change like I had to.
  • Speeding Semi Trucks.....WHY?
I sympathize with all truckers because of all the regulation they have to contend with but think speed limiters is a great idea. Why does a semi driver, company or independent, need speed about 75 mph? Torque is more important than hp and I shudder at the thought of a triple cruising down a highway at 85 mph! Some trucking companies, like SWIFT, have these in place and are still in business. But the limiters should be an option best left to the company with the trucks. More federal control is not the answer.
  • truckers lane change
Sounds good to me for company drivers but not for owner\operators. I don't want anymore government in my life. But how about a device that forces the trucker to look in their mirrors BEFORE making a lane change. A high percentage of my fellow drivers proceed to change lane, then put on their signal, then look.
  • governor
why not but 65 mille per hour governor on all car
  • Truck speed governors
Law enforcement is busy enough! If truck speed governors will allow law enforcement officers to focus more on other aspects of their job, while still maintaining public safety, I say approve it!
  • Truck speed governors
Here's one problem for cars caused by speed limiting trucks. The trucks wind up forming a "truck lane" because they all travel at nearly the same speed and many cities limit trucks to only 1-2 specific lanes. This creates almost a rolling roadblock because most cars would not be caught dead in any but the farthest left lanes, no matter how slow or fast they travel and how close or far is their intended exit.

Now oyu have fast cars all to the left of this line of trucks and what do you suppose happens when cars need to merge onto the interstate highway or one of the fast cars in the left lane wants to exit, usually in the last 5 feet before the exit ramp closes off? You have a fast nimble car jumping in front of a line of heavy and slower trucks and creating a multi-vehicle panic stop. Think of some spectator jumping in front of a group of runners and then bending over to tie his shoes as the runners come up behind him. Runners will be swerving everywhere to avoid the "train wreck".

I cab live with a governor, my trucks have all been limited to about 65 mph ever since I staretd driving, but it's a bad combination to limit their speed to less than cars and force them to a few specific lanes. In some very large cities they have "express lanes" with limited on/off access which are meant for through traffic. Express lane traffic runs at a higher speed, has very little merging traffic and is much safer.

Good news, all road problems can be fixed with driver education. Bad news, most drivers will not sit still for any driver education. Car drivers act like jet skiers jumping the wake of cruise ships, except these "jetskiers" like to stop in front of the cruise ship and they expect the multi-ton "cruise ship" to stop as quickly as they.
  • have a heart for a trucker
I am not a trucker, but my Dad was one for over 35 years. Instead of governing the speed of the trucks how about educate stupid car drivers that do not unstand what it takes to be a truck driver. I would not blame a truck driver that smashes into an idiot driver that cuts in front of a semi! I think it should be part of when you have to take the test when you get your license to understand why NOT to pull in frot of a semi. Be realistic. These men and women are making a living delivering the things that you buy in stores. Try to understand their side of the situation for a change.
  • Governors on Trucks
I am not a truck driver but I do know what I see on the roads. For the most part truck drivers follow the laws of the road more so than automobile drivers. I see some stupid things done on the highways by auto drivers. When we see accidents on the roads and it involves trucks we immeadiately think it was the truck drivers fault. Many trucks are equiped with speed reducing technology now. I believe that law enforcement needs to be stepped up and fines should be much stiffer for all speeders and thoses who drive recklessly.
  • Governors on Trucks
I assure you as a 23 year truck driver that limiting the speeds of trucks at less than 80 mph is as dangerous as not. People will do some extreme things to get around a couple trucks who are forced to pass each other at 1 or 2 mph. Many times a trucks ability to accelerate are as important as being able to stop.
Most truck fatalities come from tailgating and falling asleep.......we are well monitored for speed. Having slower trucks bunched up on the highway will not lead to less accidents.
  • same rules for everyone
the governors and black boxs are already on the trucks.and should be left up to the owner/company to set controls.not everyone else.i would like to see the same done to cars.like to see cars log a 11 hour day.that starts when they leave home.go to work[includes time at work]do what they need to and be back home in 11 hours. p.s. don't care about thr grammer.point is still made.SAME RULES FOR EVERYONE..
  • "professionals"
Most, (95%) or better truck drivers are
    professionals. I cover 100 miles a day,
interstate. The idiots I see in cars,
    pickups and suv's are unbelievable.
75-100 mph in 55 zones, zig zag, cut
you off, no turn signals etc. If a
trucker were to do this, he would
last a couple minutes before a cop
would nail him from all the cell
phone calls. Go ahead and vote for
more nanny state gov. laws. The next
time your in Wal Mart looking for
    toilet paper, beer and mayonaise,
    your speed governor vote killed
the J.I.T. system. Or maybe your
heart meds are just now leaving
    CA. bound for ATL. 20/285/85/75.
  • TRUCK SPEED
TAKING THE FREEDOM FROM AMERICANS IN ANY FORM OR FASHION IS WRONG, HAVING ALL TRUCKS TRAVELING AT THE SAME SPEEDIS A DISASTEROUS IDEA. I WOULD BE MORE ACCEPTING OF THIS IDEA ONLY WHEN CARS ARE GOVERNED AT THE SAME SPEED AS TRUCKS AND SPLIT SPEED LIMITS ARE ABOLISHED THEY INCREASE THE INCIDENCE OF ROAD RAGE, JUST PUT YOURSELF IN A TRUCK DRIVERS PLACE AND YOU WILL UNDERSTAND, THESE IDEAS ARE BROUGHT ABOUT BY LARGE COMPANYS WHO HAVE REDUCED THIER FLEET SPEEDS AND WANT TO MAKE EVERYONE LIKE THEMSELVES SO THEY CAN STILL COMPETE ON THE SAME TIME SCHEDULE...
  • Libertarians are nuts
Libertarians are idealistic nuts. It's one thing to talk about freedom, but what about responsibility? Unfortunately, most people don't want to take responsibility for the results of their poor freedom of choice. Hence are current financial implosion. Governors are a great idea.
  • DRIVERS
Anyone can "operate" a motor vehicle, though there are very few "drivers" on the road. "Drivers" being those who do it for a living. Truckers are "Professional Drivers." They have many hours of "expreience" that have given them the opportunity to observe and learn the behavior of other motor vehilce "operators" that {don't} share the road. I, myself, am a professional driver, but on a smaller scale as I am not a trucker. But, my many hours of windshield time have given me the chance to truely learn the skill of driving. Those who drive for a living come to know the safe limits of the maching we are operating. Also, those with proper skills are the ones having to navigate through all of the unsure, inconsiderate and cell phone using motorists out there.
  • Annuity and Insurance Companys
Not all annuity sales are bad I am a Farm Bureau agent in Fl and a Clark Howard Fan.Our annuity has no yearly charges for unless under 30 000 then it is only 35.00 per year and our rates are not bad.We are the only major Insurance company that I know of that has not stoped writting in Fl.If you google bad faith claims that is a good indication of how a insurance company treats its coustmers and I think that you will find no flaws in Farm Bureau.I have been an agent for sixteen years and have yet to have a customer complain about how their claim was treated.I was a teamster and a truck driver for many years,I have taken every kind of driving class that I could find and the answer to most of our traffic problems is driver education. You are a great source of entertainment and knowledge especially for such a cheep nerd.and in a way that is a compliment. Please keep up the great work.I do wish that I was younger and knew how to apply spell check but it is late and I have never heard you knock anyone for their shortcumings

  • Truck Speeds
More driver education is needed for all drivers.A lot of truckn freight is time sensitive and the drivers can be held financially responsable and this should be outlawed
  • Trucks
Mr. Truck as a owner operator I would have to say you are wrong about us speeding. We pay for the fuel in the truck. Every 5 mph you do over the speed limit can result in 1 mpg diffence. Times that by 100,000 miles per year and you see why we don't speed, it cost thousands of dollars of extra money a year. This might have been true in the 70's and 80's when diesel was a $1 gal. Most trucks that speed are company trucks that the company didn't set the speed governor on.
Illinois has repealed their law requiring trucks to travel at 55 mph vs cars 65 mph. Having spilt speeds makes the situation worse. Trucks can do 60 without getting a ticket, but cars can run up to 75 without worrying about a ticket. it's simple, when our law enforcement start enforcing the speed laws, we will have less truck-car accidents. Remember people, trucks can't see you if you can't see their side mirrors.
  • fault
Yes a lot of auto drivers are stupid around 18 wheelers. Do they really think an enormous truck can stop on a dime! Of course I've had too many truckers zoom up from behind and stay on my tail! Fault lies with the ones who think they own the road!
  • Governers are not already there
The top speed of a truck is determined by the ECM (Electronic Control Module) is already installed on all trucks built after 1995.
When a computer is connected to this devise, either trough a hard wire or bluetooth, top speed, top RPM and idle time are all set. There is no added cost for any fleets running trucks built after 1994 to set a limit on the speed of their trucks. In fact every major transportation company has speed limits. As much for safety as for fuel economy.
The trucks that run over 70 miles per hour are typically owner operators that generally run older equipment. The real danger is in these drivers.
  • Physics of stopping
The reason trucks should go slower than cars is because of the physics of braking. It takes longer to bring a heavy truck to a stop than it does a passenger car. By going slower, it makes it possible for trucks to stop within a distance that will save lives.
  • And once again... Watch prices rise
I understand why the public wants this but what about the unintended consequences of doing this? Time is money in transportation and limiting the speed a truck driver can drive will in turn result in an increase in transportation costs. Since companies love to pass this on (along with a nice margin), we can expect to see a rise in inflation... Boy yet another wonder glorious flipping idea from the nanny state!

General rule of thumb... Truck BIG, Car SMALL. It is like those ride crotchrockets (which I personally think should be outright banned from roads) - You dart through traffic and get hit - better have life insurance!

  • More gov rules
    Some people, want gov. monitoring
    everything. They have a personal
tragedy, and want gov. to step in
and ease their conscious. Kind of
like the ridiculous ban on fire-
crackers in Ga. Were a nation of
    wusses. Our founding fathers would
    commit suicide, upon seeing what
we've become. Mama and Papa gov.
Let's ban this, let's monitor this,
let's add another law. This is not
how I grew up, and I'm okay. Other
    countries, that have been choking
on gov. reg for years, are starting
to see the light. Were going the
other direction! If you don't like
the way it is in the USA, just leave.
Quit screwing it up for everyone else.
PS: Go ahead and tell me how many
diction mistakes I've made, like I
    really care...
OH, I almost forgot. When the Ameri-
can people finally wake up to how
    bad the governments screwed every-
thing up, you'll have 300m to deal
with. Good luck, there won't be a
hole deep enough to hide in...
  • delivery driver
I drive medium duty class 6 delivery trucks up to 26,000 pounds with 24 ft box vans on the back. We get paid by the hour and still are under constant pressure to hurry up and get back to reduce overtime and so the trucks can be reloaded for the next days run.
Sometimes a short burst of speed is needed to pass a slower moving vehicle, get out of the way of cars behind us, or start up the steep hills we have here. I usually go no more than about 4 over the limit, which is up to 70, but most being 55. I've had cars tailgate me so close the only thing I could see was their headlights shining under my back wheels.
The best thing we can do for safety is improve road conditions. Make the roads wider, flatter, straighter, smoother, banked properly, drained properly, marked clearly, well lit, and well engineered. Make more of those early warning lights that say "prepare to stop when flashing" so people can have more time to stop before the lights turn red.
  • Big Truck Speeding
I believe this would be a great thing! I also believe that "normal" drivers need to slow down.....which will never happen. As far as the big trucks, WHY NOT DO THIS. The drivers will never do it on their own. Think about it people...would you want your loved one to be hit/killed by one of them? Drop the speed and maybe lives would be saved!
  • truck governors
you do not make a living driving a truck @ don't have any idea what it's like.get the cars off the road @ you won't have to worry.or learn how to drive
  • Your supportive comments today
Thank you so much, Clark, for noticing supporting our efforts to get this common sense rule in place in our country.
The organization that my wife & I founded in the wake of experiencing every parent's worst nightmare is called Road Safe America. This organization has worked for 6 years to establish alliances within the trucking industry, which is a crucial backbone of our economy. Unfortunately for everyone involved, during the past 30 yrs. shippers & receivers have bid down transport prices as much as possible. This has led to our current set of circumstances: truck drivers are worked unmerciful hours and still do not make an income commensurate with the responsibilities they shoulder.
Please know that we are far from being anti- trucking/truck driver. We are simply pro- highway safety.
We do fervently believe that the obvious first step is to require the use of ALREADY INSTALLED speed governors. These have been standard equipment, according to the ATA, since 1992 so virtually all trucks in use have the equipment already. There is NO capital expense required. The U.S. is now the last technologically advanced country in the world not to have such a requirement for heavy commercial trucks. Japan, Australia, all of the E.U. countries, and as of 1/1/09, the most populous provinces in Canada (Quebec & Ontario) require governors to be set on such trucks. The top speeds around the world vary between 55 mph (Japan) and 67 mph (Australia).
The next highest priority is to require Electronic On Board Recorders. This is a "black box" that would electronically record how long the truck's been driven, where it's been, etc. Today, one of the very few truly national rules in trucking is that a driver can "only" drive 11 hours a day (increased recently from 10 hours). Again, in arguably the world's most technologically advanced country, the way drivers prove that they are not violating that limit is by filling out paper log books themselves. It is truly amazing that our government has not yet required these units, which cost less than 1 tank of fuel, on trucks. Interestingly, the only method of freight transport that doesn't require some sort of black box is trucking. We certainly don't lose 5,000 lives a year on planes or trains...think there may be a cause & effect relationship? We do.
Once we can get these two rules in place, removing the unsafe and unfair use of speed & fatigued driving as misguided competitive advantages, we will be the most vocal group in the country advocating for professional hourly wages for EVERY hour worked, including waiting while being loaded/unloaded AND including overtime.
  • What is the real reason Wal-mart put governors on? I bet it is because they watch their operating costs and they figured out that driving slower saves them money. There is strong correlation between fuel cost and truck fleet bankruptcy. Fuel is one of a fleet's greatest operational costs. I do not think wal-mart did it lower their accident rate.
  • Common sense
If we are going to do this, do it for everyone. I am sure that every Chevy Corvette, Dodge Viper, Mercedes S class, and BMW 7 series owner would love to spend over $65,000 on a car that will not do over 75, which is basically the highest speed allowed anywhere in the US. While we are at it, why not ban speeding. Oh wait, we already have. Folks in cars and trucks alike will just go to a mechanic, and have the computer reprogrammed to go as fast as they want. I guess we need the government to hold our hands every step of the way. And the most devestating wrecks are airplane crashes and train wrecks. Just like truckers, these drivers/pilots are far more well trained than the public, but when one of these things crashes, hundreds of people may die. Just remember that whenever you slow a truck down, you pay more for whatever is on that truck. For example, part of the price you pay at the pump is due to the transportation cost. You want to ship your package UPS and get it there by the next day at 10 am, but you want to govern our trucks. You want to get your fresh produce, but you want to govern our trucks. I do not understand.
  • Coomon sense
Oh, by the way, we routinely spend 70+ hours a week in our trucks, and no, we do not recieve any overtime pay. Why this is legal is beyond me. The government as well as the general motoring public, as well as shippers and recievers treat us like we are garbage. The truck I drive does not even have cruise control, and the AC only works sometimes.
  • Common sense
Most truckers get paid by the mile, which is generally unfair. If you could travel at 70 mph with no traffic, then it would be a good deal.Suppose there is a wreck, and you are in traffic for three hours, and you only move three miles. If you are paid 33 cents per mile, then in three hours, you will make 99 cents. So a trucker would make 33 cents an HOUR, or just under a dollar every three hours. Most people will never understand what we go through. Can you imagine working at the office, and not getting paid because the computer network was slow. We can't pay you because of something beyond your control. Not to mention that we do not get paid to sleep in our trucks, or to get loaded or unloaded. Some truckers wait for days for a load, away from their families, and do not make a dime sitting there. Want to make highways safer and reduce traffic fatalities? Then pass a law that all truckers must be paid by the hour.
  • Governors on trucks
As a truck driver I wouldn't have a problem with governors, if police would enforce the speed laws. Too many times I see motorists going 10-20 mph over the speed limit and do not get pulled over for speeding. Channel 2 news in Atlanta reported in 2007 that Georgia Highway patrol does not pull motorist over going through downtown Atlanta, unless they are doing 15 mph over posted 55 mph speed limit. We need our police to enforce the law to within 5 mph over speed limit. I believe this would help reduce accidents involving a cars and trucks. Yes there are truckers who do not know how to drive the speed limit also.
  • Speed
Mr. Bernath, I have not been to Oregon lately, but here in Georgia, the speed limit is widely ignored. There are stretches of freeways here with a speed limit of 55 that the average vehicle is traveling 75. Surveys show people want 55 mph speed limits and yet noone does that. I guess people vote with their gas pedal. Watch what people do, not what they say.
  • Governors on Trucks
I agree with Mr. Bernath 100%. Perhaps GPS locator tags on all cars/trucks registered at the DMV as well. The sky is the limit here.
  • GOVERNORS ON TRUCKS & CARS
I HEARD YOUR COMMENTS REGARDING A LAW TO INSTALL GOVERNORS ON TRUCKS. I BELIEVE THIS IS A GREAT IDEA. WE ALREADY HAVE SPEEDING LAWS WHICH SHOULD BE OBEYED. THE USE OF GOVERNORS WOULD ONLY ENFORCE THE ALREADY EXISTING HIGHWAY LAWS.
I BELIEVE THIS SHOULD ALSO BE INCORPORATED INTO CARS FOR THE SAME REASON.
IN THE STATE OF OREGON, THE MAXIMUM SPEED IN THE STATE IS 70MPH. WHY SHOULD WE BE ABLE TO GO FASTER?
I ENJOY LISTENING TO YOUR SHOW, KEEP UP THE GOOD WORK.

    AMERICAN VOTING CHRISTIAN,
    RON BERNATH
