Jun 29, 2009 -- Consumer Financial Protection Agency proposed by Obama

President Obama's proposal for a Consumer Financial Protection Agency has brought the long knives out on Capitol Hill.

Such a regulatory board is long overdue, according to Clark. People's trust in capitalism requires transparency. You need to be able to understand your options, whether you're talking about buying insurance or investment products or simply doing banking.

Comptroller of the Currency John Dugan is supposed to be watching out for the American people, but it often seems he instead wants to protect his buddies at the giant monster mega-banks.

It doesn't take a prognosticator to see that the unholy alliance of banks, brokerage houses and insurance agencies will litter Capitol Hill with money to shoot down the CFPA proposal. But the irony is that many of them are only alive because they've been pumped full of taxpayer bailout funds!

It is so past too late to have a CFPA. If one had existed through the latter 1990s and the early 2000s, we would not be in our current mess. Honesty, transparency and disclosure should be required.

As always, Clark invited Dugan to come on the show if he wants to offer rebuttal.

Unfortunately, Clark won't be able to answer any questions submitted via commenting. If you have a question, please try posting it to our message boards.

Sorry Clark, I don't think even a CFPA could have stopped the buying frenzy. The ONLY thing people want to know about being a consumer is what their monthly payment is gonna be.

If this proposed agency doesn't come with some mandated consumer education courses, it is not gonna do anything for joe "credit" public!

I suppose these overpaid clowns we elected in washington d.c. will watch out for consumers best interests in the same way they did with the banks and insurance companies with the lending/subprime real estate fiasco. These elected clowns can't even balance their own personal checkbook. How do you expect them to responsibly look out for consumers. The only thing for sure is that the good times will continue to roll on in d.c.

    Coleen,
Sue them! I am not kidding. I had a problem with an auto and could not get the dealer or the auto company to straighten up. I filed in small claims court, including fees for my time and headaches, and suddenly they decided to get serious and fix my problem. Here in Gwinnett county Georgia, it is real easy. I don't know where you live, but go to nolo.com and they should show you how to do it.
I paid the extra fee for a sheriff's deputy to serve the court papers. I'll bet they crapped in their starched undies when a uniformed deputy walked into their office while they were trying to sell cars and served them with the court order. I ended up with a fixed car and a nice refund check hand delivered by their attorney who pulled up in front of my house in his white cadilac. My wife didn't believe it.

I have a 2006 Sonata and for 3 years the turn signal have intermittenly stop working. The dealer has fixed it twice but it is still happening and unless I can get to the dealer when the mechanic is working and the turn signals are not working they refuse to do anything. This is a safetly issue, I have had warnings from cops, was not able to change lanes on highways missing exits because of this. What will it take for them to fix my turn signals when I am in an accident and maybe get killed or kill someone else. While the Hyundai may have a good rating when there is a problem Carousel Hyundai refuses to fix the problem. I have not been able to get anywhere with them. I spoke to Hyundai's consumer affairs but I am still waiting for an answer but do not hold out much hope of success.
