Jun 23, 2009 -- You won the Jamaican lottery?! Don't fall for it!

RIP-OFF ALERT: There's a new version of an old scam from the '90s that Clark wants you to know about. In it, consumer writer Greg Dawson of The Orlando Sentinel reports that people are contacted by phone and told they've won the Jamaican lottery.

The catch? You have to pay upfront to patriate your winnings to the United States. But there is no Jamaican lottery.

Years ago, there were mailings about similar lotteries supposedly originating in Canada, Germany, Australia and elsewhere. And people lost untold millions trying to get their "winnings."

"It's just an incredible amount of money that's coming down here," a rep from the U.S. Embassy in Kingston, Jamaica says. "We've got cases from Honolulu to Maine."

One New Jersey resident lost nearly $250,000 in this Jamaican lottery scam. This woman was a retiree and that was every penny she had. After being scammed, her disillusionment reportedly drove her to take her own life.

This scam has become so competitive in Jamaica that gangs are fighting and killing each other to get what are called "sucker" or "reload" lists of people to target in the United States.

Here's a simple rule: If somebody says you've won something, why are you paying money for it? Don't do it!

The key here is to be your own skeptic, be your own police officer. Don't let somebody sell into your desire for easy money. You'll just lose your dough and there's very little recourse after that.

Unfortunately, Clark won't be able to answer any questions submitted via commenting. If you have a question, please try posting it to our message boards.

What others are saying

  • fell for the scam and voted for Obama
First, let me say I'm proud I voted the way I did. Now, for the scam, sometimes these people get to you at a time in your life when you're at the very bottom. Depression, despair and bad luck will make you want to believe in miracles even just for a little while, (this does not make a person stupid). I don't think it's good to say a person is stupid unless you meet them and walk a mile in their shoes. Yes, something needs to be done, but nothing will ever get done when people can't have under- standing and caring for his/her fellow person instead of just setting back and calling them names.
I guess you can call me stupid in Virginia but I do care about people.

Please give our president a chance to do his job, Bush had 8 years to create this mess and Obama has only had 1 year to clean it up!!!!
  • Jamaican Calls
A while back--months--my husband started receiving these calls. Like everyone else, even after telling them NO and to NOT CALL BACK, they continued. We have no answering machine, which I'm sure frustrated them, but it didn't stop them. After reading that no authority can apparently help, I fixed it myself. What stopped them? Next time the phone rang, I recognized the number. Picked up the phone. Didn't say boo---just screamed at the top of my lungs into the receiver and hung up. It was two days before the next call and I picked up the phone and again screamed as loud as I could...no calls since then. Next call--if there is one--I have a coach's whistle ready to go!!!
  • Jamaica calls
is there any way to stop this... I was told by Sprint that there was nothing they could do. is there a way to block numbers on cell phones? the number one person left me I called to try and get off the call list and he told me I was calling FL 305-647-5886 lets all call the number and harass them! Sprint said that the 876 numbers I was getting were coming from a local area so they must have some sort of switch set up where the come through locally. Needles to say the men or women are very rude and will say anything when you tell them you are not interested. What a pain that we have to deal with this when it would be so much easier if our providers could just block a number.
  • Jamaica Publishers Clearinghouse Scammers
My father in PA was contacted by someone saying they were from Publishers Clearinghouse and said he won $265,000 and a 2010 Mercedes. He had to wire money to get his winnings. Unfortunately he did send some, but finally put his foot down. They even said they were at customs at the Philly airport with his money and needed more money to get it through. This was atr 11am. We called customs at the airport. They said no one was there and they don't even get international flights arriving until 1pm. Then they called later and said they were the FBI and knew we were scammed and wanted to help us get our money. Still wanted him to wire money, but this time to a judge in FL. When asked for his badge # he hesitated and gave us something bogus. Then he gave us his cell # (an 876 excahnge). We asked for his work # at the FBI and he said he wasn't there and to call the cell #. Then he said we could call the FBI at 911. At this point he said he was at the Red Rocks or Red Luck Casino Resort and Spa in Las Vegas. We have filed reports with Western Union, local police and FBI. Also spoke to our phone company about the calls. We were told we could do a few things: 1. When someone calls, after you hang up or they do, pick up your phone and hit *57. This sends a trace of the call's number to the phone company and this makes a record of the call received. 2) You can also pick up your phone and dial *60 and then list any phone numbers that your are receiving calls from that you don't want to receive. This will block the calls from being received by you. We did this for all of the 876 #'s they called him on, as well as a 708 number (supposedly out of IL). The numbers they called us from were: 708-617-8923, 876-452-6975, 876-596-1453, 876-535-3167. Please be aware that 876 is a Jamaica exchange!!! 3) We also put a block on our phone so my dad can't inadvertently make any outgoing international calls. They are still persisting and calling him pretending they are the FBI or a state Marshall and want to speak to my dad. He refuses to answer the phone at all for any number he doesn't recognize or even any out of area call. We need to do something to stop these JERKS from ripping off the elderly and others. Please pass this info on to anyone you know who has been a victim. I hope it helps! If it helps even one person I will feel that I did a little part to stop them from hurting other unsuspecting and trusting victims.
  • Jamaica phone based calls
876-282-4175 phone Same crap as previous complaints if I find out where they coming from they better hope they meet there maker before I introduce them to him. This number is harassing my 80 year old mother with phone calls daily have her address on top of phone number same scenerio you won millions,a new car, etc we need to give you a ride to the bank to pay for your prizes. Now they scared my 10yr daughter who is visiting her for the day. Low life scum
  • 876 scam
Beware! There is a new version of the scam.
Somehow, the Jamaican scammers, apparently more technologically advanced than our phone companies, can somehow clone your number and have THEIR calls to you charged on YOUR account.!
Happened to us and our phone company refused to "forgive" the charges. Had to change phone companies AND numbers.
  • Jamiaca Lottery Scam
I have for 3 days been getting these harassing calls. The 1st one was a woman I couldn't understand a word she said, told her I couldn't understand her, she kept repeating herself. Meanwhile there's a dog barking in the background. I told her again I didn't get her and told her I could hear the dog, she hung up. The only reason I knew it was from jamaica cuz my caller id said jamaica and the #. Now the next day I keep getting calls, number doesn't show up, says unavailable (really starting to drive me nuts, sick of them bothering me) I tell them over and over to quit calling me and I want nothing to do with their SCAM! You can always hear stupid unbusiness like background noise (BIG GIVEAWAY THERE IT'S A SCAM)I can't barely understand a word any of them are saying to begin with. It's driving me nuts, i can't stand it and it's only been 3 days! One left a message the other day and I couldn't understand a word of it except the last 4 numbers of the phone number i was suppose to cal back! (Yeah Right) They call 2, 3 4 times a day!
What can be done about this, how can these people get away with this crap? This is not right at all, and meanwhile the fools that actually fall for it are making these bastards rich! Why don't they just take no for an answer?! This is bull crap!
I just want these phone calls to quit!
I just feel bad for the elderly people who actually fall for this crap.. they have no clue what they are getting themselves into! DO NOT FALL FOR THESE FAKE LOTTERIES, please be Warned! It's a SCAM!
  • kingston crooks
i got a call @5:30 am yesterday from these people and when i told them i did not care how much money i had "won",they started to get rude before i hung up on them.they had also called my elderly mother numerous times before my older brother happened to be there once and answered the phone.when he told them not to call back, they cussed him and then called right back to attempt to talk to my mother.
  • Does anything make them stop???
I am STILL getting the calls. I refuse to speak to the folks from Jamaica. If I see their name in caller ID, I just pick up and hang up. But they keep calling, sometimes three times in a row. Why can't we get someone to help us block these calls???
  • Phone Company, Cops, and FBI Useless!!
I have been getting calls for 2-3 years now on my business line!
I get called from 876-528-6700. I have been cursed at and everything else.
He told me I won 2 million dollars and I told him I had the Brooklyn Bridge for sale.
Another time he told me he wanted to get to know me and I told he can meet my husband who is a cop (lie). Then he told me he was an FBI agent and gave me a fake badge number.

I have called AT&T and they won't do anything about it because it's in Jamaica. The phone company keeps saying call the police department and the police department keeps saying call the phone company. The local police said the only thing I could do was file a restraining order for someone in Jamaica, what a joke! Called the FBI and nothing! FBI told me to call the US Consulate in Jamaica!

IT IS USELESS TO ASK THE AUTHORITIES FOR HELP- ANOTHER EXAMPLE OF WASTED US TAX DOLLARS!!!
  • Jamaican scammers keep calling!!
I never fell for the scam, but they keep calling from 876-505-7518. Call block won't work on out-of-area calls. The phone company won't help with these calls. Is there anything I can do?
  • Jamaican Phone Scammers Are Harassing My Eldery Mother
I just wanted to report on the (876) Jamaica phone scam. My elderly mother is 77 and has been receiving calls from the same caller ID name. CB Kingston. She told him that she could not understand him and not to call her again and he got really ugly with her and told her to "shut up and listen to him!" She hung up and he continues to call. He even called and left a filthy, nasty and harassing message on her answering machine. She called the Police and he listened to it but said there was nothing he could do about it. He took a police report and that was it. I am getting tired of this person harassing my mother. I have discovered online that these folks are still doing this alot. I am reporting these people to anyone that will listen. We need to get this stopped. The phone number he calls from is 876-295-4919. I found out on Intellius.com that it is a cell phone in Trinity, Jamaica but that's all I could get. Everyone needs to know this is still going on and they are harassing and cussing people over the phone.

  • stick to the subject
i agree, only a five year old or an idiot would fall for something like this. but as for brian's "extra stupid" comment below, quit interjecting your own narrow political view into something that has nothing to do with politics. typical far right idiot. divisive and unconstructive.
  • A fool and his/her money will soon part.
  • It is easy to fall for if you think about it.
Maybe not this lottery, but think about how many people were taken in by Bernard Madoff and perhaps R. Allen Stanford. These aren't stupid people, by in large, just people that want a quick return on their money.
  • Jamaican lottery
Well, I don't understand how anybody can fall into a trap like the "Jamaican Lottery". If I have to pay to get my $$$$ … duh … I believe common sense tells me that this is stupid. I got in the past quiet few emails from Africa stating that I can get a high return by helping to transfer funds into the US or so ... sure ... just use your common sense.
  • Jamaican Lottery
The old saying "there's a sucker born every minute" is not quite true. There are three.
  • extra stupid
extra stupidity is not confined to those who convince themselves they won a lottery they never entered and willingly wire thousands of dollars to someone they never heard of. It is also common today in the "i can borrow my way to prosperity" crowd. I would imagine in most of these cases if you were to gaze deeply into these people's eyes, you would only see the back of their head.
and yes, there are millions of them out there, as is evident by whom we now have as our fearless leader.
  • Really Stupid People
It is hard to imagine that anyone would believe they won a lottery that they never entered. Life is tough. It is really tough if you are extra stupid. Anyone who looses money on this thing should be legally declared incompetent and their not be alowed to look after their own affairs. Then again, Obama needs the votes.
  • Cash for Clunckers
What type of cars have to be bought?? Can you get a used car using this deal or does it have to be 2009 or newer?
