Jun 22, 2009 -- Clark's tips for getting a better night of sleep

Are you getting enough sleep? The Dallas Morning News reports that only 1 in 4 of us get the recommended full 8 hours of sleep every night.

In addition, one-third of workers say that lack of sleep has affected them on more than 10 working days during the last year. Lower productivity, weight gain and higher mortality are just a few of the repercussions of losing your nightly shut-eye.

Meanwhile, the premium bedding industry and the pharmaceutical companies have both gotten rich providing supposed solutions to the sleep dilemma.

But there are some cheap ways to ensure you get a better night of rest.

• Don't drink caffeinated beverages after 2 p.m.
• Don't have more than one glass of wine, beer or other alcohol.
• Don't discuss money with your significant other just before bedtime.
• Don't place your smart phone by your bed to respond to e-mails.
• Don't watch TV before bedtime.
• Get into bed half an hour early and read a calming book.
• Exercise regularly.

What others are saying

  • Insomnia
It might help if I could find employment. The worry about paying bills doesn't disappear when I go to bed. It surfaces in nightmares which wake me up constantly during the night.
  • Sleep Problems?
If you're having trouble sleeping you should consider getting a sleep study. You'l be amazed at what you can learn about yourself and learn how to get a good nights sleep.
  • It works for me!
Great tips from Clark! One thing I do every night before bed is to play some "Sudoku". Believe me, those numbers will put you to sleep all through the night. I don't know how but it works for me.
  • 3 week old infant
No offense Grandpa Gene, but grandparents only spend part of their day(a 24 hour period) with the infants. I have a 3 week old, and it's a 24 hour a day job for 2 people. Believe me, we spend plenty of time playing (not really able to teach at this point) with her, but at 2:00 am if she doesn't want to sleep, we don't either. I was able to sleep from 11:00 pm to 4:00 am last night, and now I'm working a 10 hour work day.
  • Fussy Infants???
Whats this about fussy infants, are you talking about congress or the senate and or the president? All of my grandchildren have crawled up into Grandpa's lap or bed, snugled up, and slept soundly with no fuss at all. Oh yeah they boot, punch, kick the ole kidneys at time but a two year old can't hurt yah much and something that is expected and protected against if you use your head for something more than a knot to keep you spine from running down the back of you legs. Wonder why grand kids love this old wild fart, must be the ice cream and candy bar ration. Spend some time playing with them an teaching them and they won't be so fussy.
  • fussy infants grow up
and you will sleep better. promise
  • sleep great
A cpap is the way to go. It took me a year to get use to mine. But,it works!
Eight hours on a cpap and a mild sleep aid medicine and you feel like a million dollars! hooray!!!!!!
  • bye bye sleep
I have another tip: Don't have a fussy infant.
