Jun 18, 2009 -- Supermarket ratings revealed, new Sam's Club auction site

Sam's Club has come up with a smart new way to attract members. The warehouse club has launched its own auction site, but this is no second-rate eBay. All the merchandise is brand new and brand name, plus it's from one seller only.

Auctions.SamsClub.com is strictly available to the members of the wholesale club.

Meanwhile, the May issue of Consumer Reports took an in-depth look at the big national players in the grocery industry -- including warehouse clubs like Sam's Club and others.

The top-rated supermarket in the nation was Wegmans, which got the best possible scores in service, perishables and cleanliness. But the prices? Just average.

Trader Joe's came in at No. 2, with a top rating for service and price, a good rating for cleanliness and an average score on perishables.

Publix (No. 3), Raley's (No. 4) and Harris-Teeter (No. 5) rounded out the Top 5. Whole Foods came in at No. 8.

What of the warehouse clubs? Costco is at No. 7, Sam's Club is No. 38 and BJ's is No. 42.

Meanwhile, Wal-Mart Super Center -- the nation's largest grocery chain -- came in at No. 56 out of 59! They got the worst possible score on service and perishables, a bad score on cleanliness and a good score on price. Kroger -- the second largest chain -- checks in at No. 37.

So who came in last at No. 59? The worst supermarket chain in America is Waldbaum's, according to Consumer Reports.

What others are saying

  • Walmart
Walmart has gotten way to big for their britches. The prices are ok but their customer service stinks. People need to speak up and demand the kind of store that serves the people.
  • Walmart
I agree with you Rick about Walmart. I am sorry that KMart went under although i still shop at KMart because they still offer lay away, Walmart got rich on the little guy who could only afford things if he put them on lay away. They have no regard for the customer and they hire anyone, and they don't give the proper training. This is all because they want to keep the bulk of their wealth and pass none of it down to us. Watch their prices they continue to raise their prices each week they go up a dime to a quarter. Shame on Walmart for taking advantage of the little guy. Not everyone has a credit card nor can they afford to have a card. Their only means to having better things is not that the price is low but that they have access to to get these products.
  • Walmart
I can believe the ratings on Walmart. There was a time when K-mart ruled the department store world. Walmart came along and buried K-mart because K-mart did not adapt to the competition. Walmart gave good service and low prices and blew them away. Now Walmart is the big guy on the block. People flock to their stores and they have become complacent and take their customers for granted. I cannot stand going to Walmart anymore. The only thing they have going for them is their prices. Their customer service is horrible, you spend much more time standing in lines at checkout and they act like they just dont care. I believe if Target can adjust their "target" market a little, they can bury Walmart and I look forward to that day.
  • Byerleys (Minneapolis-St. Paul)
I don't know if they were rated, but EVERYTIME we have visited the area, we have found this to be the best in ALL categories, and we have been fortunate enough to travel in all 50 states. (By the way, to Bill Pruyne, the word is warehouse, not wharehouse)
  • Wharehouse clubs
The only way Costco beat out BJ's has to be because BJ's shoppers didn't paticipate in large enough numbers. I've belonged to both and stopped my Costco membership.
  • Woodmans
I do most of my shopping at Woodmans Superstores. Prices and selection are great. Only drawbacks is produce, often not as fresh as you would like. Meat is good but often expensive. So those items come from either Sam's Club or a local Mexican supermarket. The Spanish market has excellent produce and good meat with really good prices.(One big draw of Woodmans-No tax). Crossing the boarder into Wisconsin saves 7%
  • Aldi's and Publix
All Aldi's stores in the Orlando/Tampa, Florida area are fabulous - clean, efficient service, great prices and the best bread ever. We save a tremendous amount on our food budget there without sacrificing quantity or quality.
As for Publix, best meat and outstanding customer service! Just this weekend we pointed out we were overcharged by 10 cents on a 10 pound bag of potatoes and were immediately given a full refund and the potatoes to boot!
  • Doesn't help me
None of the top 5 is even in my area. What good are the rankings?
  • Trader Joe and others
I may hold a minority opinion, but I wouldn't buy meat, fish or chicken at Trader Joe because it isn't always fresh. I like Harris-Teeter for most things, but prefer meats and fish from Whole Foods. There are 2 Kroger's in my town. One is good, the other is dark and dingy. Food Lion is awful -- only good for cheap paper products.
  • Grocery Stores
Sharp Shopper and Wal-Mart get most of my grocery dollar. Sharp Shopper is a small scratch & dent chain, so we go there first, to see what they have. I have found brands that I would not buy in a regular grocery, because of price. They are very helpful and still use paper bags. If you go to one, stop first at the customer service desk and pick up a pamphlet, that explains how expiration dates work. If I could afford to skip Wal-Mart, I would. My nearest grocery is a Food Lion. Ugh! I use it like a convenience store. i just pray the garden does well this year.
  • Food Depot is #1 for my family
We love Food Depot - cheap, good quality food...they are a little high on their meats but they do frequently have specials. I have "black-listed" Wal-Mart for anything I need - the cashiers are slow, the employees will practically run you over if you're in "their" way, and they treat you like you stole something as you leave the store. Food Depot is never over-crowded, they have fast, friendly cashiers and staff, and you can find almost everything cheaper than other stores with the excetion of only a few items.
  • $.99 store
If you get a 99er in your area, shop often. I love going there first for generous produce, bread, jams, spices and some dairy. Then I am ready to get the rest at Smith's (a kroger owned store).
  • Walmart
Walmart's own survey, they place store where the stupid live. They have destroyed America and nobody cares and its our fault.
  • GROCERY
...the only sewage dump I have been to is Aldi...tasteless cheap food, fruit and potatoes crawling with bugs and worms...but yes, cheap prices for produce in this sewage market...rotted food, too..that's Aldi!
  • I like walmart too
True, the help is non-existent and a lot of the other shoppers in the store are, for lack of a better term, dirtbags, but . . . the prices are amazing!

Several staple items, like pasta and pasta sauce, are nearly 50% off what I was paying at Publix. It actually makes me sick that it means Publix thought a 100% markup on a $2 item was reasonable, wait, that's more than 100%, Wal-mart's still making their money, right? And don't even get me started on prices for things like shampoo and detergent.

My groceries used to cost around a hundred dollars a week at Publix, now I usually spend around $65. I can give up a few of the "niceties" at publix to save over a grand a year on the exact same brand name products.
  • Trader joes
were are patiently waiting for a Trader Joes here in Visalia, CA. Hurry up already!!!
  • CR has it right
Here in Sacramento we do not have Aldi, but we do have Raleys, Trader Joe's, Sams, WalMart, and Costco, as well as Safeway and SaveMart.
We are also members of our local Sacramento Natural Foods Co-op, which makes a big effort to buy from local farms, and we are pleased with that approach, not for any political reason, since we only buy what we really like there, and it is great to support the local farmers directly.
So, we are pleased with what we eat, and our ranking is right in line with Consumer Reports.
  • Good deals and clean
    Flagrant oversight
    What about Aldi??
    By Jill @ 06/19/09 02:23:38 PM
    ^^^^^^^^^
    What about ALDI'S?
They are finally in Florida yet we must still drive an hour north to go there.
They have their act together and have minimum personell yet are highly functional in every which way.
As for their shopping carts you will never see them strewn about like in other supermarkets because one must use a quarter to get one and when it's returned you get it back. That's German efficiency.
Now I'm hoping that they will move south soon below St. Pete.
  • High Prices in Austin
I live in Austin, TX. I never heard of Trader Joe's or Wegmans. They do not exist in Austin. We only have a very few grocery stores to choose from here, and they know it too. They all charge very high prices.
  • Consumer Reports Got It Right
I grew up in Rochester NY, Wegman's hometown, and even way back then it was a unique shoping experience. It's only improved with time. One visit would tell you why it totally deserves its CR top rating.

An adult move to Florida introduced me to Publix, arguably the Wegman's of the South. In contrast, stints in Texas, Washington and Colorado showed me just how bad other grocery chains could be.

I now live in metro Atlanta and feel blessed to have Aldi, Publix, Target and Costco all within a five-mile radius. They offer quality fresh food and store-brand staples in clean and friendly settings; I shop them all with a careful eye on price and nutritional value.

A Walmart Super Center is my closest grocery venue, but I get items there only if I'm out of a national brand item or staple, and the other stores are closed. Why? This relatively new Walmart already has cleanliness, customer service and checkout problems.

Personally, I found best-price-only and coupon shopping strategies to be poor bargains. They focus on poor quality and/or highly processed foods that mean health problems down the road. I'm in my 60's now and better understand the importance of a healthy diet with fresh quality food. It's cheaper in the long run.

So, IMO CR got this survey right. In the end, you really do get what you pay for. Just watch where and how you do it along the way.
  • Walmart (and elsewhere) merchandise
Great points, Richard! There are too many factors to attempt to say all Walmarts or Harris Teeters, etc are good or bad. It's simple; shop where you get the best products and service in your area. Walmart is cheap because they get everything from China, but have you tried to find anything made in the USA ANYWHERE? That's the reason our economy is in the trash and there are no jobs----the US doesn't make anything here anymore and we buy everything from China even though they try to poison us with lead paint on our kid's toys, melamine in our dogs' food, and filth in our drugs (e.g., heparin blood thinner). Nothing will change until we start making and selling things in OUR COUNTRY!
  • Publix
Love the store. CS is awesome and the selection is varied. Love the Bakery and Produce department. It's true, Publix...where shoping is a pleasure, truly.
  • Meijer vs. Kroger
I used to love to shop Meijer. The price and produce was much better than Kroger. But Meijer moved out of our area and now I mostly shop Kroger. I love the Kroger brand products. I find that the Walmart brand products aren't as good as Kroger brand or Meijer brand. There are much fewer Sam's choice products, also. The worst part about Walmart is trying to check out. Kroger is the best at checkout. They have many baggers and are just extremely friendly.
  • Consumer Reports
This organization has it's biases and you never get a true picture of any situation. The surveys are done among members only so unless you are a paid member you will never be allowed to contribute. Members don't typically rate with any discretion, everything is either great or crap. Clark is the same way, he has recommended some real bozos in his time.
  • Before we forget ourselves.
After reading all of the comments re: grocery stores, I find that all people have preferences and that they are all different. We shop at all of the stores listed, although Walmart seems to get most of our dollars. I will not begin to feel superior to people shopping anywhere, because our economy is bad to everyone now and we cannot begin to judge people for trying to make ends meet during this very difficult time. I can find good and bad about each of the rated stores, so make my choices based upon what I find, not what I read in either CR or this site.
I think people can make their own decisions if and where to work, and we have no right to tell them what to do with their lives. My problem with Walmart is that almost everything they sell is made in China (which allows for the cheaper prices) but loses better paying jobs here. That is why people will work hat Walmart in the first place. They perhaps lost their jobs and are now working for the company which caused them to lost their jobs in the first place. I wonder though, if walmart were not around, how much higher our unemployment rate would be.
    Ah, what a catch 22.
  • Supermarkets In General
I wish the comments would have been about those subjects supermarkets can control. Where someone parks their cart or how they permit their children to behave is beyond the control of the store.

I find any chain will differ from location to location, depending on the management team and the employees they hire.

If I walked into a strange city, I would want a Kroger's and an Aldi's store. Both have good store brand products and each serve a purpose in my grocery shopping.

Having worked for Kroger's on two different occasions in the mid-west; I know what they expect and the cleanliness expected at all stages in their process. I was in processing locations where I would not have hesitated in eating off the floors. Totally spotless. Customer care was always a top priority when I worked for Kroger's and anything other than total courtesy was a quick route to unemployment. If a product is not up to par or what you expect bring it to the attention of the management. If management does not satisfy your concern then contact the regional offices.

I have only recently relocated to the south where I have found Ingle's and I enjoy my shopping in their stores. The stores are clean and inviting and the employees are very customer oriented.

  • Grocery Stores
I regularly shop at Ingles,Bilo , Publix and Walmart. I buy most of my staples and some produce at Walmart and shop the weekly bargains at the other stores . Service is poor at Walmart and they have a big problem with their pricing, especially on marked down items

I have a remote connection to a person that works for Walmarts produce supplier. He says that Walmart insist on the highest quality in their produce but then leave it in their warehouses or storage rooms to long.

As to the wild children, well thats the problem of poor parental supervision. The bigger problem is adults that do keep their buggies to the right. Both problems are not unique to Walmart.
  • Why I shop Aldi's & not Wal-Mart
I used to buy almost all my groceries and necessities at Wal-Mart, until I visited an Aldi's store. Aldi's not only has cheaper prices than Wal-Mart, but their house brand items are excellent quality. Their cashiers are top-notch - I never spend more than 3 minutes waiting in line at Aldi's. I waited in line 5 to 15 minutes regularly at Wal-Mart. I can't afford to wait on cashiers who obviously where putting in their time at my expense. Aldi's pays their employees very very well, but is not unionized! And they take their job seriously.

You get what you pay for when it comes to employees - I get more than what I pay for when I shop at Aldi's!
  • Kroger
    Well! Clark!
Why did you not tell us about Kroger? Where do they rate? Higher that you like, I imagine. There was a time when I did not shop Kroger because their prices were too high, so I remained loyal to Publix. Now Publix is too high and the prices at Kroger are always lower than at Publix.
  • Wegman's quality v Costco
Wegman's bread does not contain the nasty, unnecessary "partially hydrogenated" crap. Their coffee bar and seating areas are rather European. OK to loiter, browse the web, eat. Costco, I love you but will not buy your baked goods. Why? The nasty, unnecessary "partially hydrogenated" crap. You don't need it for short shelf-life plus it hardens the arteries. Come on, the evidence is in.
  • trader joes
I can do almost all my shopping at this one small store, and my diet is restricted.
  • walmart
I am a vendor and have been in the back of many Walmarts my advice is shop at Publix,
  • Grocery store ratings
The Consumer Reports article equates Trader Joes with low prices??? My experience with Trader Joes is it is a neat place to shop, and that they have a lot of fairly unique items - but they are definitely not low priced. Additionally, shopping at Trader Joes is similar to shopping at a boutique store - very limited selections. If you're shopping for national brands, you will find very few of them at Trader Joes.

The local Harris Teeter stores and Bi-Lo stores beat Trader Joes in prices, offer double coupons (always), have at least 20 times the selection, and are very good places to shop.

If I want to go to a boutique food store, I'd choose "Fresh Market" over Trader Joes in a heartbeat. However, I don't understand how such stores are rated in comparison to national grocery store chains in any manner.

I read the article in Consumer Reports magazine (online via my library), and there isn't a category for "broad selection" - one of the more important reasons to shop at a particular grocery store. I don't think I'd even find some of the things we buy regularly at local grocery chains at Trader Joes, and if I found such items, I would probably find only one of that item (and not in the brand I was looking for).

My guess is that some of the folks doing this survey wanted stores like Trader Joes to be included. That's why such the category of “broad selection” was not included.
  • Wegmans
The best produce and deli and they would never sell any food outdated! Harris Teeter is the biggest ripp off!!
  • Best produce and Deli that i have ever seen
For some reason i keep bring home products out dated on harris Teeter shelves and it amazes me how they can get away with it!
  • Supermarket Rating
Aldi is tops in my book! I've never had buyer's remorse from any of their products. Their prices are very low. Excellent shopping experience!
  • PUBLIX
THIS CONFIRMS WHY I LOVE PUBLIX.
  • Best Grocery Stores
I think Kroger should be higher on the list than 37. They double my coupons on every item with no limitations as other stores such as Ingles. I think they should be on the bottom of the list with Walmart.
  • Publix
You are supposed to get the item free at Publix if the price is incorrect, unless you are buying Alcohol or Tobacco products. I've never had a problem.
  • Price is all that matters to me >Walmart wins
This survey can't be trusted. Some of the highest rated stores don't even have nation wide locations.
  • Publix overcharges!
I refuse to shop at Publix because often things with a special price do not ring up at that price. When I point it out to them and am proven right, I don't get an apology, a discount, the item free...nothing! They just waste 10 minutes of my life waiting for them to confirm their mistake. So I don't shop there anymore. Watch yourself budget buyers!
  • Walmart/Bashas/Frys/TJ's
If you shop at Walmart, check the meat labels; some show you're paying for water added! Here in Arizona, Basha's produce can be rotten; be careful; their prices tend to be high. Fry's Marketplace is consistently excellent in price and customer service. Trader Joe's is a favorite of ours; wonderful foods, helpful employees.
  • No wonder I shop at Costco, Publix, and Trader Joe's. They all ranked in the top 10!
  • Harris Teeter Rocks
Harris Teeter has awesome customer service. After participating in a phone survey about my HT shopping experience, the Manager of My Harris Teeter actually called me regarding a product I requested they carry. Although the product is no longer available, he was kind enought to let me know and offer me alternative products to try. Way to Go Alan and the Harris Teeter in High Point, NC.
  • WalMart
I shop the Walmart in Owasso, OK, and for the most part find it very satisfactory. Earlene's comments pretty much covers it all. Our store has just been remodeled and the only complaint I have is that the moved everything and I spend too much time looking for something. And another BIG complaint I have, is they took out the fabrics and sewing notions completely. I have also been shopping at a new Aldi store that recently opened and they beat Walmart prices on a lot of things, especially fresh produce.
  • Grocery stores......
I like Giant Eagle in Frederick, Maryland-it is my favorite. I go out of my way to go to Trader Joe's-I am addicted to Joe's O's! I have been to a Wegman's once and it was quite an experience! One is coming to the Frederick area. I have Super Fresh (it is in need of refreshing and updating), Food Lion (I like Food Lion), Safeway (nice and clean-good selection) and Weis (used to be filthy dirty with awful produce but it has improved-it is a bit out of my way so I don't go there often). Giant Eagle gets my vote! Judy
  • Kroger is the Best!
I really enjoy going to Kroger above all other retailers in my area (incl. Wal-Mart, Biggs, Pamida, Meijer, Target). I love that they double coupons up to a $1 all the time. So I clip coupons (paper and Internet) and use them when those items are on sale at Kroger. I save on average b/t 30 and 40%+ off retail on groceries and household items. I do not enjoy going to Wal-Mart because they do not offer a variety in goods such as Kroger. The stores usually feel dirty to me and have the "Wal-Mart smell". Their prices are not always the lowest (I have compared). Also, I do NOT think it is right that they profit from the advertising expense of other stores by honoring other store's printed prices.
  • Trader Joes
I used to shop frequently at Trader Joes in Seattle,WA. I felt like I was in TJ withdrawl after moving to Atlanta, GA. Then, low and behold one day I open my mail box to find the TJ flyer. The Atlanta area has several JT stores. Great place to shop for items you will not find in your regular grocery store.
  • Ingles
UGG!!! Have you been to the Ingles on Hwy 92? Stinks and is dirty.
  • Trader Joe's (TJs)/Walmart
Trader Joe's or TJ's as we call it offers a wonderful shopping experience in my town. The store plays nice music and is visually attractive, clean, and staff is friendly and helpful. Prices are great and there is a bigger varity of healthier food than found in the mainline groceries stories. Plus it is fun to taste food samples on every visit. Down side is the produce is okay but not great. A lot of the produce is from outside of the USA. Not enough fresh local produce.

Shopping at Walmart is like experiencing a train wreck. There are so many crying and fussy children and the employees are subpar and can rarely answer any questions. So much of the merchandise has been made in China and is defective. Walmart is destroying the American economy by importing so much from China and with it's employees depending on the gov for medical help. Let's all stop shopping at Walmart.
  • Ingles
Ingles stores are clean, bright and carry a wide assortment - especially compared to the primary competition Food Lion.
Ingles ranked 23rd in the survey and Food Lion was 53rd...
  • HEB
I give a thumbs up to HEB too, they are awesome! Wish there were more in North Texas. Their store brand is awesome too!
  • Kroger
They do NOT want your business, based on the way they treat the customers. Unempowered store management and just plain bad customer service. Stay away!
  • Price isn't everything
I agree that Wal-Mart has the best prices, but there is more to it than price. I shop almost exclusively at Publix (which is by far the biggest grocery chain in Florida) and they beat Wal-Mart hands down when it comes to service (try to find someone that speaks English in Wal-Mart) freshness and cleanliness. In addition, checkout al Wal-Mart is a nightmare. They never have enough cashiers and for some reason they are always very slow. Publix’s motto is “Where shopping is a pleasure” and compared to Wal-Mart it certainly is.
  • Wal Mart has the best prices
I go to the Super Wal-Mart on 71st in Tulsa, OK. I collect ALL of the sale ads for other grocery stores, drug stores and Target. If you take those ads to WalMart they will honor all those prices with one stop. They will also except internet coupons, which alot of grocery stores do not. I am very happy with the quality of produce and meat. The employees have always been helpful (how much help do you really need?) and the lines are not long. However, I do shop during "off" hours, week days or very early morning.
  • Kroger
Kroger is getting better, but I really appreciate what they're doing for the consumer with the $.10 off per gallon of gas for every $100 you've spent in the store the prior month. The points remain in your account till the end of the following month. I've saved quite a bit of money on Kroger gas that way. Their produce is getting better as they build new stores and remodel others.
  • Wegmans
If you don't live in an area where there are Wegmans supermarkets, you are truly missing out on a great shopping experience. The stores themselves are terrific, service is superb and the merchandise quality is only the best. Want something you can't find in the store; no problem, ask the manager and they'll get it and stock it for you. You only have to shop at a Wegmans once to become a steady customer.
  • I love WalMart
I love WalMart and shop there regularly.I've never seen a dirty one. I agree that there's no service, but I don't go there for service. I go there for low prices!! I agree with Earlene. It's the customers who make a store dirty. And I, too, hate it when there are kids running around without any parental supervision. But that's not WalMart's fault. And who cares if the Walton family makes money on the store?! And who cares if they don't pay well or offer benefits. If you don't like it working there, quit and go somewhere else. If you don't like the benefits, get another job. Or get an education or some training so that you'll qualify for a job that requires intelligence and a skill! An entry-level job at WalMart doesn't require education and skill. Therefore, they shouldn't have to pay any more than what they're paying for entry-level jobs. If you can't live on that, get another job.
  • Trader Joe's
There many, many reasons to move out of the state of California, but one great reason to stay...Trader Joe's.
  • super stores
I do everything I can at Costco / they are for real and do have your interests in mind.
  • Trader Joes'
I am a crew member at a Trader Joes' & the management absolutely does not care about the crew. They have great customer service & good benefits. The benefits are basically worthless because of the high turnover & few opportunities for advancement in the area. But from firsthand experience if you nose isn't 90% up the customer's rear end 100% of the time you are a "bad employee". Its more a matter of the employee always being wrong, rather than the customer being right.
  • Trader Joe's
There are many, many reasons to leave California. But, there is one good reason to stay...Trader Joe's.
  • Ingles
Where did my favorite store rate?
  • Wal-Mat
I shop at many different Wal-Mart stores and find them all very clean and service has been great. The employees are great. I like Consumer Reports but think maybe they may have some people working for them that may slant a story.
  • Two Thumbs Up for Walmart
The Walmart in my hometown is clean, prices are low, service is fantastic, and a great one-stop shopping place for sooo many items. I know many of the employees, and except for the usual grumpiness we all mouth about our jobs, tell me they are satisfied. Several have been promoted and are long-time employees. A neighbor and his wife (retirees) are both employees of Walmart. The wife recently had major surgery with a long recovery. Walmart allowed her keep her job and work on her own schedule when she returned. It must be a local thing. Sorry about yours.
  • I'd never get in a Publix without a bio-hazard suit. However, Walmart stores are always squeaky-clean in my area. That goes to show how biased CR's readership is.

Then again, I canceled my subscription when realized that at a car survey, when they managed to get the Audi S6 rated but couldn't get statistically enough responses to rate the Mustang.

I guess that CR's readership in CT doesn't bother about Mustang or WalMart...
  • WAL-MART
I WORK FOR WAL-MART AND HAVE SINCE 1997..I HAVE BENEFITS..I HAVE NEVER SEEN A REALLY DIRTY STORE..BUT THEY ARE ONLY AS DIRTY AS THE PUBLIC ALLOWS..I SEE MAINTENANCE CLEAN UP..AND CUSTOMERS THROW TRASH. • Why does Wal-Mart have 500 check-out lanes...
...when they never seem to use more than 5 of them at a time?
  • Wal Mart
Wal Mart scores low because it has no service. I used to shop Wal Mart when Walton was running the joint. But who wants to wait in line for 30 minutes to check out? I'd gladly pay a few dollars more to have a place I can get in and out of in a reasonable amount of time.
  • walmart
the one and only reason you see walmart publicly bashed so often is their no union stance. the liberal mainstreem press and tv love to play up to that. sure the wages and benefits are low at walmart. do you think they are any better for mostly entry level jobs anywhere else? Maybe head over to mcdonalds, burger king and see who they hire and at what wages and benefits. I would guess probably walmart is equal to or better in that regard. just as a previous writer said, these are entry level jobs and probably should be viewed as just that. they hire people that couldn't get a job elsewhere and gives these people a stepping stone via experience to higher paying jobs or positions.
So, i guess if you hate walmart, that is fine with me. but you walmart haters are definetely in the minority. just go to their stores and see the throngs of people saving money. And that is the untold story you walmart bashers won't discuss. The savings for everyone shopping there. And that includes the low income people you feel are taken advantage of.
  • WalMart
WalMart makes all there money on the backs of their Associates. Teach them how to get on welfare. Pay low wages, charge high prices for insurance. There meat is terrible. It is pack in gas so you have no idea when it was cut. Veggies are not top of the line. Stick to the National name brands
  • walmart- low cost at a price
If anyone seriously thinks that walmart is a great place to shop, they should check out the facts in the documentary called "walmart, the high cost of low price". On a personal note, my friend works for the state's welfare dept, and he confirmed that walmart does indeed tell its workers to seek govt. aid as much as possible- and the walmart insurance costs are very expensive for their low paid workers, too. The Walton family should be ashamed of how they treat their employees.
  • Supermarkets ratings and Walmart
I do work part time time at walmart. Full time is 34 hours+ a week. There are benefits. Even part time, I'm in the 401K and profit sharing. Each store operates as an independent store. Some are clean. Some are dirty. Some have better markdowns. Each has prices set by corporate, but they aren't the same store by store. Walmart does hire people no one else would employ--old, handicapped, students--folks you don't see at Publix. I had been out of the workplace for 30 years, I applied for 40+ jobs. Only Walmart hired me. I was promoted and offered full time employment. I refused it and I went back to school. They let me work around school. You bashers need a bit of truth tossed into the mix. Do I want to work there forever? No. But, had they not hired me last year, I'd be out on the streets.
  • H-E-B
I'm going to give a local shout-out to this awesome Texas chain. Amazing prices, clean stores, and many, many, items prepared in-store. The HEB and Central Market-branded items are at least equal to national premium brands at 2/3 the cost.

Case-in-point: HEB-branded Fresh orange juice was $2.50 today for a 1/2 gallon. It was 3.99 at a Winn-Dixie in Orlando where we were vacationing this week!

I love Costco. Just bought a car through them and got the deal Consumer Reports recommended. I am a faithful subscriber to CR. I agree that Walmart is dirty and their produce 2nd rate. I don't buy meat there either since they ship it in frozen and don't employ butchers like Costco or Publix. Trader Joe's is a good place but limited items. Sam's is just a big Walmart. Have bought items there like cereal that was out of date; have seen meat out of date and baked goods. Won't do anything there except get gas. Nasty place here in the burbs of ATL.
  • Wal-mart quality
I think the overall cleanliness and product quality in regards to Wal-Mart is completely exclusive to each individual Wal-Mart. There are 2 location in my town, and I can honestly tell you, one is very clean, and the product freshness and quality is superb. The other location...I'm not sure I would let my dog eat anything out of that store, it's just that trashy.

    Laura,

Not sure where you get your information, but 391/2 hour work week does not preclude a company from providing benefits. 30 hours per week is considered full time. Aside from that, I go to Walmart for most items because they are cheaper, but do buy meant and some produce from Publix. The Walmart I go to is very clean and the prices can't be beat. As an example, a small box of Cheerios at Publix is almost $4. I can buy the larger size box at Walmart for $2.57.

I LOVE COSTCO,I also shop SAMS, but have found COSTCO to be the best between the two. Wal-Mart is the pits, I quit shopping there yeaars ago, mosty because it stinks, secondly I know the history of how poorly the women workers are treated, and numerous other infractions on all employee's, health care Ins./benifits are well below the national average for a company of it's size and wealth. What's up with that Wal-Mart?
  • Walmart
I shop at Walmart when the item wasn't available at TARGET. Luv the TARGET. Shopping at Walmart is like going to Tiajuana.
  • Walmart
My sister works for WalMart and notonly gets a reasonable wage, but gets VERY GOOD benefits (health insurance, sick days, paid personal days off, retirement plan). I shop there and find a mixture of goods from poor quality to good quality...you have to look.
  • Walmart
Give me a break. The Waltons are billionaires, everyone of them and they can't give their employees a living wage or insurance. I don't support leaches on society like them. How come they can pinch pennies when it comes to their employees and yet in their own lives can live as extravagantly as they please.
  • Flagrant oversight
    What about Aldi??
  • Pathetic Produce
I totally agree about Walmart's produce. It always looks a day from rotten. Last week their grapes were the size of blueberries. I just got some at Publix that were 3 times bigger. And I actually bought some blueberries from walmart the other day and one day later they had mold on them. And LASTLY, on that same walmart trip, I bought some pita bread only to find out when I got home that it expired that day. USE BY, not SELL BY. so pissed.
  • walmart
i will take walmart any day any town..the prices in everything is the best and reasonable .i hate those cards u have to present to suposebly get the bargains..and the buy one get two free if you do this or that bah humbug.and sacking your own groceries is a pain and paying cash..or debit..
  • Super markets
We just don't go to one place. We go to Walmart, Target, Publix, CVS, Walgreens and Sams. We look at ads and know what to buy where.

Walmart is good for staples like canned goods and boxed items. But would not buy meat and some of their produce. We find those items to be of low quality.

CVS and Walgreens have good sales you just have to look at the ads.

Our local grocery is Publix they are also the closest so reguardless we go to them. But I have found them to be pretty expensive on non sale items. They get you in the store using sale items, then kill you on non sale items. You learn this and do not buy those items from there.

For instance Publix right now has peaches for 2.49/lb. Albertsons has them for .99/lb and last week Walmart had them for .89/lb. Look at all the money you would lose at 2.49/lb!
  • Walmart
I don't know what the heck Consumer Reports is talking about when saying that Walmart is bad.

Their Super Centers are very clean and their vegetables are just like in any other chain.
  • Not so
I welcome anyone to visit Walmart Super Center Wimauma,Fl. One of the best for prices, cleanliness, organization, in stock and friendly employees I've in
seen. I don't work for Walmart but have thirty years retail experience

Can't say I shop in any of these places. I don't shop at Wal-Mart/Sam's Club and haven't since they started.--Long story, but they put 3 mom & pop businesses out-of-business where I used to live, yet didn't want to pay ANY benefits to their employees so they would only hire for 39-1/2 hours/week. They lost my business for life then. Haven't shopped there in 30 plus years. Others can shop there.

Of the other stores, we only have Costcos. I refuse to buy a membership to any store because it wouldn't pay for me, so I won't be going there either.
  • Everybody hates Walmart but 95% of people shop there. It is what it is.
  • Doesn't surprise me at all about Wal Mart. It has always be a terible store. Now it is worse with all the "poor" people in there. You can get things cheaper at the regular grocery store with coupons and have to deal with Wal Mart. I haven't been in a Wal Mart in over 2 years and don't plan on it. I drive by and laugh at all the fools....
  • I love my Wal-Mart Super Center
My local Wal-Mart was converted to a super center a few years ago. I absolutely love it. Seriously people, how much service do you really need when you buy bread, milk, and canned beans? And if their perishables are that bad, nobody would buy it. Where else can you buy a beautiful, delicious orange for $0.25?

I don't know why liberals bash Wal-Mart so much. Wal-Mart has improved the quality of life for poor people more than any other organization in this country.
  • Consumer Reports
Consumer Reports was once a fine organization but has become increasingly subjective of late. They clearly have their own biases. I take anything they say with a healthy dose of skepticism. Clark would do well to do likewise.
