Jun 17, 2009 -- Jet America offers 9 seats for $9 on every flight

When you're talking about budget air travel, it doesn't get much cheaper than the hard discounters in Europe and Asia.

Ryanair -- the most successful of them all -- has stripped every frill out of its planes to deliver the lowest fares. For example, the seats don't recline, there are no seat-back pockets and you won't find any window shades. They even cram 199 seats onto a 737 that usually only holds 150 people.

But, oh, what savings: Clark took a flight from England to Ireland for the equivalent of $1.75!

Now an American airline is launching with prices to rival the international hard discounters. Jet America offers 9 seats for $9 on every flight, and fares step up from there. They're starting with one single aircraft per route and will add more over time so they don't risk growing too quickly.

(Editor's note: Jet America has since gone out of business. If you are having difficulty getting a refund, contact your credit card issuer to do a charge-back. You have 60 days from the date of purchase to do so.)

The only other hard discounters in the United States include Spirit Air and Allegiant Air.

Clark compares the hard discounter trend in air travel to the discount bus services that are available in the United States. Bolt Bus (fares starting at $1) and Mega Bus are both prime examples.

What others are saying

  • Cheap Tickets
None of the airlines that are requested fly out of Atlanta. Looking for cheap airfare from ATL to Virginia (ORF, RIC or PHF), will be traveling back and forth for the next several weeks due to family reasons. Need to know the best priced airline – Can anyone help?
  • Where are we going?
Are cheap flights safe? Is cheap national medical care going to be safe??????
  • Jet America
The same person starting Jet America started Skybus $10 tickets was bankrupt in six months. Flew from Greensboro NC. How can he do it for $9. Look into it.
  • is this real?
again, is this real things? I have a hard time to ..... it!
if it is real, how can I get the ball is rolling? i like to travel a lot
  • Allegiant Air Rocks!
The casino in Las Vegas bought our tix if we would book a room. We live in small town Bellingham, WA. Sometimes they offer $38 one-way and $58 back! I love these guys.
  • Spirit Air
I use Spirit Air to go to Ft Lauderdale once a month to see a friend of mine.. the flight is $9.00 taxes are $31.00 and the seats are extra.. but still it usuall runs around $60.00 round trip. Can't beat it.. Hope they don't stop it.
  • Special Deals - NOT!
There are never any special deals from Austin, Texas and not even near one on these you refer to. So frustrating.

Signed, "Would love to take advantage of travel savings here in Texas"
  • Price=Safety?
The public has no idea of the number of incidents that don't get reported in the media. Just because you don't hear about planes "falling out of the sky" doesn't mean serious incidents aren't occurring on a frighteningly frequent basis. There were dozens of incidents with ValuJet before the famed accident in the everglades, but most people weren't aware of any of them.
  • Price=Safety?
If the discount airlines were dangerous, they would be falling out of the sky on a daily basis...and they aren't. Using one tragedy (Buffalo) to condemn the whole discount industry is not logical.
  • Jet America
Of course it can work. I've used Ryan Air and Easy Jet many times in Europe with never a problem whatsoever. They are successful, as well as SAFE. These types are good for hop, skip, jumping around Europe--so why not in the US?
  • Pilot Pay
"Likes Cheap" obviously knows nothing about the airline industry when it comes to pilot standards. Pilot pay DOES NOT ramp up very quickly. Pilots endure low pay for the promise of higher pay at "the majors". The problem is the wait to get to a major is longer and longer, and the pay at the majors has gotten lower and lower. The ROI on investment for pilot training no longer make financial sense. My pilot training and education cost me $100k over 4 years, then it took another 10 years of building experience before I made it to a "major airline." Once at a major I experienced 42% pay cuts and the termination of my pension. Most pilots will no longer recommend aviation as a career to their children. This means smart people will chose other careers that require less investment and offer quicker/higher returns. This means the airlines can no longer attract "the best and the brightest".

All pilots meet the same standards? The captain of the Colgan flight had failed 5 FAA check rides. Think about that the next time you book your ticket based on price alone.
  • $9 Airfares
One slight problem - they don't leave from ATL.
  • Safe at Any Speed
They all have to pass the same FAA inspections and standards. Entry level pilots have been paid next to nothing for years. That lasts a very short time. They endure it because their salary rises VERY quickly.
  • Thanks for sharing.
  • Cheap = Safe
That's why Colgan Air paid their co-pilot $16k a year flying for Continental Express. That ensured the safety of their flight to Buffalo, didn't it?
  • Back to reality.
The whole premise of turning the airplane into a bar or a resturant is rediculous. People can go a few hours without eating, drinking or watching a movie.
  • I don't see any evidence that cheap = unsafe
Read the article. They cut all non-essentials. They want to stay in business, so I'm sure they have the same saftety checks that large bloated airlines have. They may have even streamlined that process to be better than the bloated carriers. Is Delta safer than AirTran because the tickets are more expensive?
  • You want safe or you want cheap?
This is the same guy who started Skybus. See how long that lasted.
  • Cut corners
Certainly gives one pause when when you peek into the cockpit and the pilot still has acne and she looks like she should be staffing the drive thru window at McDonald's. If the airline is cutting back on things you can see, you know they are more so on the things you can't see, like maintenance.
  • Cheap flights
Makes you wonder if they can even perform routine maintenance on the aircraft for those rates. Good news- save a buck. Bad news- plane crashes because of poor maintenance.
