Jun 15, 2009 -- Garage sales present opportunities for both buyers and sellers

Garage sale listings are up 80% on Craigslist over the past year, according to The Chicago Tribune.

It's no secret that people need to raise cash however they can. But there's real opportunity at both ends of this deal. Sellers can unload whatever is cluttering their homes at a profit. And buyers get to steal a deal on furniture, accessories, sporting goods, gently used exercise equipment and more.

Clark once picked up a pair of nearly new ski boots for $6!

There are some warnings you should know about before undertaking a garage sale. For buyers, there's always the concern about purchasing recalled items, especially if you're buying for children under the age of 3.

For sellers, you need to know that people will try to shoplift. Beware of people working in pairs, where one person talks to you as a distraction while the other steals. You need to have multiple sets of eyeballs on your merchandise!

Finally, know that serious buyers will show up hours before the start time to steal your best deals.

First Clark wishes his wallet looked like Adam Sandlers, but I can see the geeky resemblence.
Next, as far as garage sales pro resellers at flea market at antique shops hit the advertised ones early to get the full selection, they usually bring a truck or trailer and leave it running. they know what to look for, will offer a fair price for multiple items,(with room for a little bargaining) then without wasting too much time will make the deal and leave. they are some of the best and easiest customers you can have. I would help my wife with the watching out for thieves when the crowds of immigrants came shopping, some people bring bunches of kids and with them all runing around it can be distracting. My wife would keep a small box of freebies and offer 1 thing out of the box to any young children. Afterwards we list the remains and take them stright to goodwill, but I have seen some people adverise on craigslist for the leftovers. We even got a nice picture that way. the lady said the sale was ending at 3pm and anything after that was free (we showed up promptly) and by the time we were leaving 6 more people had shown up to help clear out the garage.
Lastly, the best garage sale I've been to is in Honolulu. Two days a week they have a flea market/ giant garage sale at the stadium downtown....they use the areas outside and it can almost encircle the outside of the whole place.
there are many true antiques available because of the high amount of asians that live there and the many older Hawaians, most stuff is passed down and shuffles back and forth in the islands and never goes to the mainland.
  • Garage Sales Oregon
20 years ago garages where everywhere here! Good stuff "usually bought from California" was up for sale as people moved here, and cleaned out what they brought with them in the U-haul.

As for California garage sales, I lived there for 33 years. You only advertised a garage sale. NEVER write your ad as a Estate Sale, Resale Sale, Antiques Sale etc--thats when the taz nazis show up....
  • Don't advertise in CA!
I kid you not; if you advertise your big garage sale here in CA, State Tax Reps show up and tally up their cut of the profits! The intelligent individual quietly advertises through other means locally and shuts down before 8 a.m., as most of the tax-types aren't out that early.

It wouldn't be a surprise to see Tax Gorillas shaking down little girls' lemonade stands soon...

It pays to advertise in your community newspaper. Early birds may be a pain, but they're serious shoppers. And your goal is to sell things, remember?
  • Garage Sales
Early birds are not theifs! They get there early because if you go late it is all gone! If you have a sale to get rid of things and have things left at the end of the day, you value your items too much to let them go and that's okey. As a seller you need help for at least the 1st 3 hours, yes to deter theft but also because you won't be able to handle the money, questions and people all at once. Please have theives arrested.
  • someone else
I happen to think he reminds me of that guy in the Bruce Berman (i think) commercial about starting your own business and this one actor says "Uh huh, Sure!" in a loud high pitched voice. But we love him anyway...
