Jun 15, 2009 -- Negotiate for better deals on hotels, clothing and more
William Shatner has the right idea as the Priceline Negotiator. How good of a negotiator are you?
Consumer Reports reveals that you can get a better rate on hotels 83% of the time just for the asking. Remember Clark's mantra: "Wow, that much? You don't have anything better?"
Turns out it's not just hotels where you can reap the benefits of negotiation. You can get a lower cell phone bill and better prices on clothing and jewelry about 80% of the time. Ditto for new cars and air fares.
Then you have a 75% of negotiating a lower rate when buying an appliance, and a 71% chance when you purchase electronics and furniture.
Credit card fees can be lowered about 60% of the time through deft negotiation. Of course, that particular figure may drop radically in the near future when you consider today's anemic credit market conditions.
One area where people try to negotiate but usually fail is with medical bills. Yet even so, Consumer Reports says it will still work more than half the time.
Polite persistence is the key to taking advantage of negotiating power. As Consumer Reports says, "Be patient and be nice. Demanding a discount rarely works." Here are a few additional tips from the magazine:
Learn how to read the inventory tag on items. This will let you know the date when an item went on the shelf. Stores will be more likely to negotiate on items that have been sitting around. Offer to pay cash on the spot and to take the item with you. Be willing to walk if you don't get the deal you want.

What others are saying
Car Repair Discount
I found that if I reserve an appointment on-line with Brake Specialists, I get a discount. If it's 3 days in advance, I get a 15% discount. I always schedule my appointments this way.
Car Repair Discount
I've used the same repair shop for years. I had to have extensive work done on an older car. I asked for a discount, based on customer loyalty, and the amount of work and received one. You never know until you ask.
HOTEL PRICES
I tried to get a lower price at Quality Inn and had NO luck. I even tried calling very late at night and could get not reduction in price.
After checking out of the Quality Inn and driving home I noticed a charge on my statement for a "safe warranty". I was not told about this charge and did not even know there was a safe in my room. I am not happy about the charge. I have contacted the hotel but have not heard back from them yet. This charge will keep me from going there again!
Car Dealer Service
I had a major repair on my car due and I balked at the price. First, the dealer, said I could eliminate a few things the manufacture does not require. Second, he gave me his card with a 10% discount if I had it done there. Ask for a discount!
Have Companies Compete
We had to have a fence put up, and I narrowed down my options to three good companies that I had researched. I had them all come out at the same time and bid against each other and asked them questions all together. I told them I was doing this when I scheduled them to come out and got an amazing deal. This also saved me a lot of time instead of having to be there for 3 seperate times.
kids braces
I offered to pay cash up front for both of my kid's braces and got a lower price from the orthodontist.
Haggling
You never know what kind of deal you can get until you ask. If you do a little homework on what you are planning to purchase by checking prices of other similar items from at least three sources. Then you will be able to haggle effectively.
Continue the good work Clark !!!!!!
stealing?
yeh, you are right. we should all pay our "fair share". It is self righteous drivel like yours that has gotten every state and local government dug into the hole they are financially in.
When 5% of individual taxpayers pay 50% of taxes and 50% of taxpayers pay 95% of taxes, what do you expect?
You sound just like my brother...comfortable with raising taxes...on everyone else but yourself. Because after all, you really already pay "your fair share".
Vegas Hotel Deal
I was able to get a better rate at the Venetian/Palazzo because I called up. I looked up the rates that were offered on many of the popular on-line sites and manipulated one of the sites make your own bid to determine what the lowest rate was. I also looked up the hotel's own website, which had pretty good deals. I then called the hotel directly and shared what I had done and wanted to know if there was a better deal. The person gave me $10/night lower than the cheapest internet deal I found. Also, instead of booking at the Venetian, she upgraded me to their newer sister property - The Palazzo, which had higher advertised rates than the Venetian. I was very happy! Now all I have to do is stay within budget while I am there. I'm sure they are hoping that they recoupe their loss on what I spend/gamble.
Cheating the system
Yeah, Brian, stealing is wrong...unless your taking from "the man". Then it's just smart business. Why are people so willing to sacrifice their principles for a few dollars in their pocket? Wait, I remember: moral standards are obsolete.
cash is king
when dealing with virtually anything where you are dealing with the owner of a business, offering to pay cash works amazingly well to score huge discounts. And many times the sale won't even be "written up" so no sales tax also on what would otherwise add to the price.
