Jun 15, 2009 -- Your chance of hitting the Mega Millions jackpot? Don't ask!

Do you ever participate in the office lottery pool? Have you ever actually stopped to think about the odds that you'll hit the Mega Millions jackpot??

Physicist John Swain (aka Dr. Knowledge) of Northeastern University ran the numbers for The Boston Globe. His findings show that you have 1 in 175,711,536 chance of winning.

To quote Jim Carrey in 1994's Dumb & Dumber…"So you're saying there's a chance?!"

Meanwhile, Swain says there's a 1 in 10 million chance you'll be struck and killed by lightning.

Tell that to some members of Clark's staff. Christa readily admits she plays $3 in the office pool when the jackpot rises above $100 million!

Unfortunately, Clark won't be able to answer any questions submitted via commenting. If you have a question, please try posting it to our message boards.

  • $1/per week lottery ticket vs. $50+/month cable?
Hmmm - the need for entertainment is inherent in humans. There is nothing wrong in indulging responsible, legal activities. I'd rather waste $4 a month on lottery tickets vs. $50+/month on cable TV, alcohol, cigarettes, etc...
Remember, "wasteful" is a term that is greatly affected by personal preferences and biases. Heck, some would consider posting on a message board wasteful!
  • lottery
I know someone who bought a 5 million lottery ticket in columbus ga . If you don't play you can't win.
  • Lottery
Everyone has some vice. As slim as a chance that you might win, its better odds than smoking or drinking. Someone playing the lottery isn't hurting me so I say leave them alone. If its not your thing that's fine but don't try to force your values on others.
  • Lottery
I attended the Paralegal program at Clayton State University and now I have a job as a paralegal. ALL paid for by the lottery. Many thanks to whoever funded my education and helped me get this job.
  • keep playing
i hope all the fools continue to gamble in state run lotteries, etc. In fact, I wish they would expand all such schemes.
Mostly poor play these lotteries under the dilusion they can actually win and now become rich. Good for them. Keep playing. After all, since these poor misguided fools pay virtually no state or federal income taxes, it is nice to see them actually pony up some money that goes to the state treasury.
Of course the state always trotts out the mega-winner showing a car sized check with the gross "winnings" on it. Unfortunately the state also grossly overstates the "winnings". After reducing to present value the series of payments and paying the real tax liability (as opposed to what is minimally required to be withheld), the dollars available to the lucky winner is cut to a fraction of what shows on the gross check. And the poor sap now is hounded and bombarded from thousands of friends he never heard of and every charity under the sun is holding out their hat seeking a cut.
Given Clark's message, you would be far better off buying a large term life insurance policy on yourself and standing on the roof of your house, holding your trusty nine iron high in the air during a lightening storm.
Oh, and the promises by the states that lottery winnings go to education or other such heart-tugging causes, the state really does put the profits to these causes...and at the same time reduces the normal funding from other tax sources by the same amount.

The profits in Ga were supposed to go to school programs but our Gov. changed that around....and as far as getting rich goes, the president of overseeing the Ga. lottery earns a 7 figure salary, for what? approving the new scratch off designs? picking the guests to draw the numbers, making sure the politicians get the appropriate kickback from the profits?....get real!!!
  • Mega Millions
Simple - You can't win if you don't play. A $1 ticket is all you need. I think it's worth it - you never know when Lady Luck will strike.
  • Lottery State of Oregon
You can't win if you don't play.

What gets me about the lottery is that they pitched that it would pay for all of the school's needs. They would drop, stop or not raise taxes on the citizens of the states that have lotteries. But of course.....they lied to us tax payers again....
  • Lottery Rip Offs
In NC the top administrator of the lottery earns over $300K; 50% of funds were supposed to be for reducing public school class sizes to 18 pupils per teacher, last year I had 22 K students. Our state cannot afford PreK/public daydare.
  • Get off your high horse about the lottery!
You complain about the lottery and what a waste it is. Yes, there are people who don't know how to control themselves, but the lottery has helped millions of people. We have already received more in return from the lottery than we will ever put into it. Both of our children attended UGA and had Hope for all 4 years, that's $20,000 in tuition per child, $40,000 total. What about all the AP classes they took, which if you take them in other states can cost upwards of $1,000? Both of my children took AP all through high school and it only cost us the fee to take the tests around $10. So on the low side, we probably received around $12,000 for AP classes. They didn't take advantage of dual enrollment their senior years, but that would be a great return for our money also. My daughter also qualified for Teacher's Hope, which was another $3,000. So we are up over $55,000 in benefits we've received from the lottery. You've probably benefited from the lottery and you didn't even put a $1 towards it. I would guess that your younger children took part in Pre-K programs, most get funding from the lottery money. What about your oldest daughter, I would venture a guess that she has Hope. What about AP classes, did she take any? I think instead of criticizing people for playing the lottery, you should be thanking the people who have made it such a great success!
