Jun 10, 2009 -- New cars actually a better deal than used cars right now

Are you one of the few Americans in the market for a car? There are more of you out there than you think.

CNW Research says 4 million used cars were purchased in the United States during the month of May. That's astounding when you consider that the market for new cars is only 9 million in the United States over the course of an entire 12 months!

Clark can't believe the advice he's about to give…but it's now possible to get a better deal on a brand new car than on a relatively new used car.

It's a classic case of supply and demand. The used car market is up about 25% and new car sales are down 34%, according to figures from The Boston Globe.

This is, however, a temporary phenomenon. Do not take this as gospel for the future! In most instances, a used car will almost always be a better buy. Just not right now!

Meanwhile, if you want to buy a new vehicle, Clark has new way to make the purchase easy. In the past, he's talked about CarsDirect.com and the wholesale clubs' buying programs.

But there's a new kid on the block known as Zag.com. This service gives buyers instant guaranteed up-front prices from a network of certified dealers. It also offers an easy delivery process that helps you avoid "the grind" at a dealership.

Zag is available to members and customers of Overstock.com, Capital One, UPromise and USAA at the moment.

So will Zag get you the lowest possible price? Well, it's a very good price, but a dedicated hard-working shopper can probably find a slightly better deal on his or her own.

What others are saying

  • Trusted Car Dealer an Oxymoron
Sorry Raymond. Not buying it. Dealers have a saying, "If you can't gross your friends and family, who can you gross?" This refers to gross profit. Given dealers are hurting, they are charging everyone in site as much as they can, including their friends. Can't blame them I guess, but you can defend yourself. Car buying services like Zag, CarQ, Cartelligent, Best Price Express and MyCarLady are definitely the way to go if you want to be sure of getting a good deal without a huge hassle. The average person is no match for the sharktank that is the modern dealership.
  • new cars cheaper than used
Edmunds.com regularly updates its list of new vehicles that are less expensive than their one-year-old counterparts:

  • New vs Used
Absolutely NO WAY will you ever buy a comparably equiped new over a used and the price be the same. I've been in the new car automotive business nearly 30 years and these times are challenging but no dealer is doing that anywhere. Believe what you want.
  • Zag got me a good deal
thanks to clark telling about about zag i was able to get a great deal on a brand new car.
  • Yes! Especially if its a car you love!
Buy that dream car, and then make sure you are buried with it!
  • New Cars
Now is a bad time to buy a car. All they have on sale is the old gas-burners. Who knows how much longer we will be able to buy fuel for them and if the dealership or even the manufacturer will be in business tomorrow. I am waiting for the dust to settle and for a plug-in or AFV.
  • AAA Participation
I clicked on the AAA option on the Zag site and got no action. Then went to local AAA site and could not find ZAG participation in New Car Pre-Negotiated Prices program. What gives?
  • USAA
I use the Zag Program through USAA and it was a great price but even a better process. I knew what I wanted and was in and out of the dealership in a short period of time. It was the best car buying experience that I have ever had.
  • Cars Direct and zag.com just put another layer of mark-up in the equation. there are many struggling dealers who sell near their cost just to exist. The market is under great stress with fewer trades on new car purchases and leasee's keeping their turn-ins longer creating a shortage in used cars, There is no definite solution but to buy from good honest dealers. Most of the old dependable dealers are still there needing your business. There are no shortcut nor sure bargains with some middleman between you and the car dealers that you have grown to trust over a period of time. It is still the best policy to buy from the friend who has proven himself to be honest through the years.
