Jun 10, 2009 -- Tagged.com promises photos but delivers headaches

Have you been "Tagged" lately? Clark recently became a victim of this annoying e-mail ploy that automatically signed him up for an expensive voicemail service.

The consumer champ and his wife recently had lunch with another talk show host and his significant other. After the meal, Clark got an e-mail from Tagged that said his friend had some pictures available online. Clark naturally assumed the pictures were taken during their meal together and wanted to see them.

The catch was that he had to register at Tagged.com in order to view the supposed pictures, according to the e-mail. Once he completed the registration, he got another e-mail saying he had been signed up for a voicemail service. The cost? $14.95/month automatically billed to his home phone number!

The penny-pinching guru immediately called to cancel the service and got a real runaround before he was able to do so.

Several days later, he got an e-mail from his friend explaining that Tagged is a virus-like program that goes through your address book and falsely blasts out notifications about photos online.

Snopes.com has a lengthy explanation about the dangers of Tagged.

Don't fall for it if you receive an e-mail asking you to register for Tagged. Be sure to let the sender know you received the message, and then direct them to read the Snopes briefing.

Unfortunately, Clark won't be able to answer any questions submitted via commenting. If you have a question, please try posting it to our message boards.

  • Tagged and Annoyed
Me too, a friends address book was automatically read and sent emails. The uneasy part is it already had my home address and telephone numbers. I set up a dummy email account, got the activation code, then deleted my email and made the dummy account the primary account. Also, at the bottom of your account profile, you can delete your tagged account which I did after the switch of my email addresses, just in case they try to win me back. Good luck all.
  • Tagged
I too was tagged, and stopped the process; however, I did put in my cell #, but realized when they sent a password to my phone I was getting into something not right, and deleted the message.

This is LOW DOWN, STEALING!!!! I am out raged that this is allowed. I called ATT and told them nothing is to be billed to my account ever, I use cards for Long Distanced with cards,I learned this that "hard way" and a $700.00 bill, I had sprint then. We need laws to stop this and I'd like to send them a virus, if I knew how!
  • FCC Complaint on it's way.
I too was a victim of this kind of fraud.I am stationed overseas in the military, and have my bills automatically debited from my account so that I don't miss any payments. Upon looking for areas where I could reduce my spending, I noticed that my phone/cable bill had gone up nearly $16.00 per month.
Immediately,I went to my monthly statement and noticed this charge for a Voicemail service. The thing is,I already had voicemail service through AT&T for my homephone that I was paying $6.00 a month for,so why would I need a second voicemail service?
When I called AT&T about this, they referred me to the company that was billing me.My wife called this company to inquire about this charge.Their associate said that we had signed up for this service when we had entered our phone number on their website. My wife and I both checked out this website and neither of us had ever been to this website before, ever.
The associate that my wife spoke with from this company when she called offered to refund one month of the premiums that I paid them.My wife did not bow down to their tactics and vowed to go to the FCC if they did not not refund our money in full. They refunded our money, and,we will be filing a complaint with the FCC as this company is bilking people left, right and center and should be stopped.I mean, look, even Clark has been duped by these crooks.
All I can say is don't take no for an answer with these guys and I think I see a class-action coming down the pipe-line.

  • Tagged.com scam
I think this scam got me .. what do I do??? I check the web site for a # to call but didn't find one. I sent a message but I'm not sure that us enough.
  • Same thing at www.SendMeMobile.com
    Hi,

I had a similar experience with www.SendMeMobile.com after I did an online quize, they asked for my cell phone number. Not knowing that it was to sign up for a subscription for ring-tones. I wasn't aware of this until I saw my phone bill with they charged $9.98 twice to my phone bill for two text messages that they sent.
  • Tagged
I found a $14.95 charge in my AT&T monthly (landline) phone bill -- "tagged" against one of the "alternate" phone numbers on my Choice Account. Evidently someone who was signing up for Tagged supplied a phony phone number ... mine! I cancelled it immediately.
  • Fraud
MC is correct. This is outright fraud and the law enforcement types should be after them. And if the phone companies are complicit, they should feel the heat of law enforcement too. For some reason if the internet is involved, this type of thing seems to get a pass.
  • There's more bad stuff
During the signup, they also ask (or at least used to ask) for your email account password. They would take this and send out emails to EVERY SINGLE PERSON YOU HAVE EVER EMAILED saying that you're inviting them to sign up. STAY AWAY FROM TAGGED!!!!!!!!
  • Where's the LAW in this country?
So why doesn't the FCC simply shut them down? Disallow all those phone charges and prosecute the perpetrators. Why does the Internet have to be a free-for-all where crime is sacrosanct and only the victims get blamed?
