Jun 05, 2009 -- Regular exercise may not be enough in a sedentary job

Clark has been obsessed with exercise since he was 19 years old. He exercises on a daily basis -- either running, using a stair master, an elliptical glider or lifting weights.

But a new medical study finds that exercise may not be enough if you spend your days in a sedentary job.

A Canadian study of 17,000 people that started in 1981 found that if you sit at work, you have a higher death rate from a wide variety of illnesses -- even if you exercise regularly! The results were published in Medicine & Science in Sports & Exercise.

To combat the dangers of sedentary jobs, Dr. James Levine of the Mayo Clinic has developed the Walkstation. The Walkstation allows you to walk slowly at 1.5 miles per hour on a treadmill that's equipped like an office desk.

Clark himself has long stood while doing his job. When he owned a travel agency, he held standing meetings because he believed they were more efficient. He also does his radio show on his feet because he's a jitterbug.

Unfortunately, Clark won't be able to answer any questions submitted via commenting. If you have a question, please try posting it to our message boards.

What others are saying

  • How healthy are Canadians?
At first this seems disheartening, but upon further reflection, how healthy are Canadiens really?

Canadians usually have to wait several months, if their lucky, to see a doctor, which inevitably causes easily treatable illnesses to worsen, and possibly becoming untreatable. Therefore, we should view this report askance.

Many Canadians come to the U.S. for medical treatment and now private clinics are popping up there, just as in Great Britain, that can see people within 24 hours of calling!

Thus, I think it's safe to say this report isn't one we should worry about.
  • Exercised really hard with almost no results
From 2005 to 2008, I did 3 full hours of exercise from Monday/Friday faithfully week after week, month after month rarely missing a day. I exercise first thing in the moring to an step areobic tapes, then went to the gym for 2 more hours of water aerobics.

I only lost 30 pounds. And struggled EVERY DAY to keep it off. Then I discovered that many of the diet foods I was eatting weren't really diet at all.

1.Soya products all of them are just carbohydrates and oils. Very fattening. NOT a good choice of weight loss of any kind.
    2. Calories DO COUNT. Too many diets today, want to just remove the fat, salt, sugar and processed foods from your food, but allow you to eat any amount of calories you want a day. This doesn't work, calories are still calories regardless if they have the above bad indgredents mentioned or not in them. So make sure you count those calories.
    3. Dairy is not a diet food. It adds chemicals, hidden fats, and makes you constipated. Not good. Skip the dairy all of it, from the fruit in the bottem yogurts to the hard boiled eggs--organic free range chicken and all. I have always suspected that my free range chicken eggs, where from the chickens that were allowed to roam around that nuke power plant in California anyway--some of them really stink when broken open into the frying pan!

My new number #1 diet rule is: Eat what you want to smell like:

If you eat fruits and low fat veggies, you will smell like fruits and veggies.

If you eat garlic, you will smell like garlic.

As for the work place walk station, If I owned my own business with employees I would have recess breaks where we walk around the block, or walk to a local restaurant for lunch, and/or my business would by gym memberships for all the employees.
  • I would love to have a walkstation at my office, but not at that price!
  • uggghh
I can believe this. I have a very sedentary job, but I try to counter it with walks around our office floor and using the stairs instead of the elevator. We are on the 7th floor, so it seems to help a bit. I don't think my employer would go in for treadmills at our desks though.
