Jun 04, 2009 -- New stats about college students and credit card debt

The level of credit card debt being carried by college students has risen dramatically in the last 5 years, according to a new Sallie Mae study.

For too long, the giant banks handed out credit cards like candy to freshman. In many cases, the schools themselves got kickbacks for every student that signed up.

82% of students now run a balance on high interest cards, according to the latest numbers. That's up about 37% in just 5 years. Even more disturbing, if you go back 5 years you'll see that nearly 70% of students carried no monthly balances. Yet today, only 15% pay in full each month!

The good news here is that the banks won't be allowed to target college students like they have in the past when the new credit card rules go into effect.

Yet it's still incumbent on parents to educate your children about the dangers of credit card debt before they go off to school. If they protest and say you're infringing on their freedom, you should explain that there is no freedom when you owe the credit card companies.

What others are saying

  • I am in graduate school directly after my undergraduate and I think my state NC has laws now about predatory credit card offers on public campuses now but they didn't when I first started. I went and got a card with good terms are high limit and I pay it off in full every month. I could'nt hardly even beleive this article what on earth is a college student with 0 income doing running up debt?!?!
  • My Dad told me...
When I was in college back in the early 90's, I asked my Dad about a credit card, he said pay the bill in full otherwise you give the cc company free money and they already make money on the transaction with the store. I've always paid in full every month.
  • credit card apps
I remember credit card applications hanging on the wall in my college classrooms. I got a card by forging my dad's signature as a cosigner. Everything was okay until a ran up a big balance and couldn't pay and the card turned the debt over to collectors who tracked down my dad.
  • Parents teaching kids??
How are parents supposed to educate their kids about the dangers of overextending their credit usage when they are just as bad, if not worse, than their kids?? Haha! Talk about an oxymoron!
