May 29, 2009 -- New passport rules could hamper summer travel

With summer vacation season under way, Clark wants to brief you on new passport rules that could create some snafus for unsuspecting travelers.

You'll now need a traditional passport or the new passport card to travel -- even if you're only going to Canada or Mexico by car, rail or airplane.

The feds are so worried about the lack of info concerning the new rules that they've already announced they will permit readmission for confused U.S. citizens. But you can expect to be detained for an undetermined period of time if you don't have your passport identification.

So should you get the newfangled passport card or the traditional passport? Clark recommends the latter. More details about both options are available at State.gov.

Meanwhile, many states are experimenting with new facial recognition software for ID pictures. However, the software apparently can't analyze a picture of someone smiling. Virginia, therefore, is the latest state to make it illegal for you to smile when you have your driver's license photo taken, according to The Washington Post.

But you are allowed to crease your lips upward -- as long as there's no evidence of any teeth showing!

Unfortunately, Clark won't be able to answer any questions submitted via commenting. If you have a question, please try posting it to our message boards.

What others are saying

  • Fingerprints on driver's license.
I've got nothing to hide. Only somebody who does would object.
  • Facial Recognition Software
I am Okay with my fingerprint being taken for a license, but with facial recognition software, they will be able to know your every move if you enter a government or 'public' building. I am not a black helicopters guy, but with the decrease in freedom and increase of government involvment seen as late, I do not want them to be able to track me remotely.
  • Passport Regulations
Nothing wrong with a national ID card which the passport is. No...the communists are not taking over. However, guns will be next!!! :o)
  • Passport
I thought I was being smart, just getting the passport card for driving into Canada. It was cheaper.... But now, if I do get lucky and get to fly anywhere, I will still have to get a regular passport to do that. Cheaper is not always better.
  • Passport Law
There is too much confusion with the new June 1 laws that I watched on televison that minors under 16 yrs of age do not necessarily need a passport card or passport book as long as they present their birth certificate.
  • 1984
Welcome to Air Strip One everybody! Smiling makes you a thought criminal.
  • Passport
The full passport is a better deal IF going more than just across the border, such as to Canada. The passport card or enhanced drivers license (available in New York State) become better choices if you live near the border and like to go across on a moments notice. The passport is not convienient to carry everyday, but the passport card or enhanced license can easily be carried in your wallet so that it is available if you should decide to just "pop" over the border on a moments notice without driving all the way home and then back up to the border.
  • Passport
Hhahahaha....It's okay...really, if you want to leave the country, you really do need some acceptable identification.
  • just get a regular passport and call it a day.
  • First you can't get back in...
This is pure communism at work. First they will implement guidelines to protect our "safety" when none of the terrorists decided to creep over the border and stay in the United States. Hmmm. Next, they will want to protect you but not allowing you to leave. It won't be long.
  • Passport Photo's "No smile"
Russia has had the "no smiling" for official photos for years. They make fun of American's smiling in every photo and call it "dog teeth".
