May 28, 2009 -- Friendly fraud finds consumers ripping off businesses

RIP-OFF ALERT: Here's a case of the shoe now being on the other foot! Some unsavory consumers have come up with a new way to rip off businesses who sell their wares by phone, internet or mail order.

What being called "friendly" fraud by The Wall Street Journal has spiked by 50% in the last 6 months, according to some retailers.

Here's how it works: A consumer will order an item, receive it through the mail and then dispute the charge with their credit card company. They'll say they never received the merchandise, or it was misrepresented, or whatever other lie they can devise.

Businesses are fighting back any way they can. One retailer documents the entire packaging and shipping process with digital photos so they can dispute a charge-back if one arises.

Others have found that signature confirmation or other tracking methods are equally effective insurance policies.

The monetary toll of friendly fraud can be staggering. One photo equipment supplier averages $130,000/week in fraud orders. About a third of those are of the friendly fraud nature. The rest are people using phony credit cards to make off with expensive equipment.

There's actually nothing "friendly" about friendly fraud at all.

  • Package stealers
When I went to Dallas to see some family around Chrstmas; there was a news report out that a crew of theives were following UPS, Fedex and USPS vehicles around waiting on them to leave packages outside of homes to steal. It was so bad that Fedex stopped delivering for 2 days because they had so many disputes. There was a sting and they caught some of the guys but that was crazy.
  • Impersonation
This post was not made by me. It was posted by some loon that gets his jollies out of posting rude and false comments about the USPS, whom I work for, to get back at me for having him suspended from the Ebay discussion boards several times. Please remove any and all posts that are signed with my name. Thank You
  • This is true
You can contact Fed ex and UPS and request that they not leave packages at your door. Consider contacting your local facility. Instead of complaining online about it do something about it. We often get credit card disputes that are untrue and unfortunately the consumer wins most of the time even with proof of proper shipment and delivery. If people would stop spending money they don't have our country may not be in half the trouble it is in. All the way from regular joe to CEO...
  • $8000.00
I lady at my church said clark talk about some how saving $8000.00 for a new or only one time home buyer I cant find out what they were talking about anyone know? judy3200@gmailcom
  • This is sad
I spoke with an owner of a local restaurant. Our food was $28 and he accidently rang up $8. I pointed out his mistake and asked he charged me the proper amount and he stated that he gets ripped off alot by people that will eat, pay with a credit card and dispute the charge. He loses out. We get pissed when retailers and scammers rip us off, yet we turn around and do it to retailers. Whatever happened to honesty and ethics???
  • UPS failures
I stopped having orders delivered to my home, but now send them to the office. The UPS guy kept leaving packages sitting by the mailbox! He was too lazy to come down the driveway and bring it to the house.
  • freindly fruad
I don't believe this story I think the companies are making this up to get the credit card companies to stop allowing us to dispute charges. I ordered three items in the last month and none arrived as promised and it was not the delivery service at fault.
  • packages left outside door
Same here with Barbara, I had a package left at my door when I was at work, and when I got home it was gone. I got my money back, but was extremely upset with ups with doing such a stupid tactic of leaving a package outside my door, expecially when I live in Downtown San Diego! I have neighbors that leave a note outside the door telling the ups guy not to leave packages outside the door!
  • Unfortunately, it goes both ways. I kept calling for a package I didn't receive and finally had to dispute the charge before the time ran out to be able to dispute it. Guess what - the package showed up after I disputed the charge and the postage ship date was the day after I disputed the charge. Coincidence? I think not.
  • friendly fraud
UNFORTUNATELY UPS AND FED EX JUST LEAVE OUR PACKAGES OUTSIDE. I IMAGINE ANYONE COULD FOLLOW THEIR TRUCK AND PICK UP MERCHANDISE. THEY HAVE LEFT STUFF THAT DOESN'T BELONG TO US AND WE CALL THEM. THEY COME AND SAY THE PACKAGING IS TORN AND WE HAVE TO FIX IT WHEN IT WAS LIKE THAT WHEN THEY LEFT IT. BY THE WAY IF THEY LEAVE SOMETHING THAT YOU DO NOT ORDER YOU DO NOT HAVE TO CALL.
