May 21, 2009 -- Thinking of dumping your land line?

The dam has burst: suddenly millions of people are dumping their monopoly-company land lines, and going cell-phone only. This is especially true for those under age 45. It's due to the economy: As people look for ways to trim bills, the land line seems the most redundant, and it's becoming one of the first things people choose to cut.

Monopoly phone companies know this. There have been allegations that they've been making it hard for you to port your land line number over to a cell or internet phone service. But the Feds have recently addressed this with a new sanction that requires them to port (transfer) your number over in one business day. Now, this doesn't include weekends -- so here's a tip: don't port your phone number over on a Friday, as you may find yourself without any phone service at all until the following Monday! Port your number early in the week.

Executive Producer Christa dumped her land line this week, which was tied to her DSL modem. She and her family are now cell-only, and chose to get their internet through Clear, a wireless high speed service that's now in the Atlanta area. She said it was fast and easy to make the switch. And bonus? Her download speed is faster than before. Clear is a new 4G Wi-max service that's newer and faster than Clearwire's previous service, but is only offered in some markets right now. You can check Clear.com to see if it's available in your area.

So is dumping your land line right for you? There are some issues to take into consideration when making your decision. Christa was warned by the phone company that 911 service is not always 100% reliable from cell phones. And if you have a home security monitoring, you'd need to switch to a wireless system.

Finally, try to avoid getting into any long-term bundle contracts with your phone company, as there are a lot of options coming just around the corner.

What others are saying

  • 60% of landline's bill are taxes!
This month, it has risen again! My landline service is $15.99, and my monthly bill is $43! This is close to abuse. What tax has such high percentage, other than property tax (and not even). I only kept the landline for the alarm system, but I am switching to a battery backup and prepaid cell. Refill with $10 a month, end of story. I am sick of abusive taxes for a service I do not even use that much.
  • Clear in Atlanta
I made the swith to them clear.com and found out they over charge your creadit card for starting the service, send you a email stating one amount then bill your card over that amount and then act stupid when you call saying all billing is none online and the dont allow one to see the billing. Also they set me up to automaticaly take money from my debit card with out me nowing. They have fine print hidden away someware Have used there service for 4 weeks now and looking for a way out of it total cost for a months service is a little over 200.00 dollers. Would like to see more posts on people getting riped off on there start up charges.

  • ATT 911 service only?
I heard that AT&T has a plan which is around $9 per month for emergency service only. Then if you have to make a call, you are charged by the call. Anyone familiar with this?
  • dumping landline?
I'd rather get cauliflower ear than a tumor on the brain (CNN report: 240% higher in cell users) and keep asking everybody to repeat what they said. One thing I can say about the cell: It's easy to call the person back when the call drops. ed
  • Dump the landline? Get better pricing!
When I called the local telco (AT&T) and stated that I was no longer needing their landline service, the Rep. immediately went into the "special rate" mode. She first offered to reduce my monthly price by about 20%. I said "no, thanks, just don't need the landline." She then made another offer that brought the monthly price down another 15%. Still, I said 'no'. Finally, she gave me a pitch to let me keep my landline (although giving up the 'special features'...caller ID, call waiting, etc.), AND keeping my DSL service...all for a monthly rate that was about 60% below what I was currently paying. Now, to be honest, she said it was a special 'promotion' and was good for only 6 months. I took it. That was about 7 months ago. When my new bill came and the price had gone back up about 20%, I promptly called and went back through the 'take my landline out' routine...and they magically 'found' another special 6-month promotion that brought the price back down again. Amazing what you can do when you threaten to walk away from their service! Give it a try...what can you lose?
  • Is cell signal is poor will Clear.com be poor too?
We live on the side of a steep hill and cell signal is very poor & non existant in some parts of house. Will Clear be the same way? We'd like to use it for television viewing on Hulu.
  • clearwire
is christa still happy with clearwire?
It sounds perfect for me on the website but there are so many negative reviews I have read, but they weren't current. Anybody else out there in ga happy with it
  • VOIP
I wish I could dump our landline. We have had Vonage for 6 years or so, back when we had to get a number from 3 towns away, we still have the same number. I can't dump my line because we live in the boonies of Maine. I need high speed and fax for work from home, so I am stuck. I have never missed having a phone the few times a year I lose power, but then we always get it back the same day. I am also stuck with AT&T for cell phones since there are so many islands I visit, and they are all roaming. Almost 70 bucks a month just for 2 cell phones. If it wasn't for rollover I would use prepaid.
  • Land Line
I've been living without a landline for 8 years and it is the best thing I've ever done. Especially considering, I have shopped around for a great cell phone deal! I encourage everyone to drop their lines! If you are worried about the power going out and not having a phone, try keeping an extra charged battery on hand. An even cheaper option would be to get a friend's old phone and keep that charged so you can just switch sim cardrs when your primary phone is low on battery.
  • prepaid replaces landline
In many cases landlines have become obsolete since there are a good number of prepaid plans that offer you the minutes you need at a fraction of the cost. Take STRAIGH TALK by Tracfone, for instance. Its a new prepaid plan for just $30 per month. You get 1000 anytime nationwide minutes, 1000 photo/text messages and 30 MB data. 411 calls are at no additional charge and there are no additional fees. The plan is available in select markets only including Chicago, Atlanta, Phoenix, Cincinnati, Dallas, Las Vegas and some others. Would love to hear fro anyone's that's bought this plan already.
  • phones
I live in florida and you can always charge your cell in the car when your power goes out.
  • Looking for Better Way
Switched to at&t u-verse couple of mos. ago and it has been total nightmare. Thought bundling all services would be better, but aggravation/non-cust-serv/billing screwups have cured us forever. Plus the at&t/yahoo webmail partnership stinks: Pay to read mail online and still get all the disgusting popup ads I don't need! at&t, you're fired!
  • land lines
I live in a townhouse with 3 floors and 6 phone jacks. How could I use only 1 cell phone, especially when family visits? Also, if power is out you can't recharge a cell phone or use a cordless phone. Only a landline is reliable. Also, please don't think 800 numbers are obsolete. Some of us don't have unlimited long distance calling.
  • security system dialing out
Many security panels will accept a "card" that interfaces between an ethernet cord going straight into your modem. The security system then "dials out" through the internet connection to your providors digital download equipment. Make sure the modem and alarm panel are on a UPS system in case of power outages. Only experienced alarm companies should be trusted to get this right and make sure your fire signals go out as well. Works like a charm- no more land line, no VOIP problems and cutting edge tech. all in one.
  • Safety — medical, police, fire
When our power goes out and stays out for three, four days, even a week, because of an ice storm or other emergency — and this has happened a number of times in the years I've lived in Atlanta — it's impossible to recharge a cellphone. I need to be able to call an ambulance, police, firefighters in an emergency, not to mention staying in touch with family. Please don't make landlines obsolete. Everyone would be more vulnerable as a result.
  • Dumping Landline
I dumped AT&T for Vonage and it was the best thing I could have ever done. My phone bill was costing me close to $80 a month and when I asked for a cheaper plan I was told that I had the complete choice plan and that was as good as it got. When I switched to vonage I only pay $32 a month and I have unlimited long distance and I can also make international calls. I love it and will never go back to At&t ever again.
  • Dumped my landline.
I don't need it. If I need a land line so bad, I can go use a payphone at Wal-Mart. Which will be never.
  • landline
got rid of my landline; never miss it
  • windstream
Windstream called with deal of highspeed internet, landline with perks. 59.90 mth. I would like to drop landline. I don't think it is going to get cheaper. I've checked Dish, At&t, clear(not in my area). Can't find anything better. Can anyone else? Hoschton, GA area.
  • Landline vs Cell Phones
Everyone seems to be cell phone and tech crazy. I agree with Kim on 5/22 living in FL I would not give up my land line for a cell phone due to hurricane season. In case of an emergency at home, I want a phone to work and I know my land line will. I had my power go out but my land line phone still worked. I have a cell phone yes but only on a pay as you go plan and use it only in an emergency while on the road.
  • Landline Lover
I guess I'm old fashioned; I enjoy to hear every word. Cell phone reception is way to imperfect for me; I can always hear the person on land line!
  • Landlines-pffffffft
I haven't had a landline in 3 years and don't miss it one bit. My girlfriend is next to dump it.
  • DUMPING LAND LINE
My wife and I did away with it 3 months ago and use our cell phones exclusively. The additional bonus is that her job allows her to use the cell phone they issued as her own! So we only pay for mine!! MagicJack was not only a disappointment but they've yet to credit me for my having returned it (via UPS to their corporate office) back in Nov.!
  • Failure on Day 8?
I just called Clear and they only offer a 7-day risk-free guarantee. Sprint offers 30-days. What is Clear afraid of? That their service will fail on the 8th day and you are locked in? If they have any confidence in their service, they should at least match Sprint's 30-days.
  • Landlines
Living in FL I would never dump my landline. The year the "triple hurricanes" hit I was unable to use my cell phone for almost 3 weeks and had no power for almost 6. At least I was able to speak to my family as they could call me on my landline....so they weren't worried....until I get a whole house generator I'll be keeping my land line
  • Landlines
I got laid off of my job last August. I set about reducing expenses wherever I could. The landline was an obvious choice. The 2 issues that I had to address where use of the landline for faxing and the limited minutes that I have on my Verizon cellphone. I figured out how to scan my documents into pdfs and emailing them instead of faxing. I got Skype unlimited outgoing calls for about $3 a month to cover the lack of minutes on my cellphone. I've been mostly happy with the new set-up. Skype is great about 99% of the time. It can be a pain about 1% of the time. I did try Magic Jack, but got too many complaints from the people I called. I could hear them fine, but all said that it sounded like someone was jumping rope on their end.

I managed to hook into Comcast's high-speed internet for $19.99 a month on special. Whenever their specials expire, I call them and get placed into whatever special they're running at the time. They've actually been very accomodating about putting me as a current customer into internet and cable specials. I mention this because high-speed internet is required for using the Skype phone.
  • Dumping Your Landline
No one banks on electrical storms. No one banks on cellular towers going down. No one banks on leaving home without (or losing) their car charger, but all of those things and worse, have been known to happen.

If you drop your landline service in favor of cellular service, you are far more vulnerable to electrical outages, switch problems (the brain of your cellular service) and loss of battery power. In today's fast-paced, often scarey society a landline can be a lifesaver.

I am less than thrilled about VoIP phone service, because a few times my cable and internet went out, and so did the home phone.

And lets not talk about what can happen when you call 911 from your wireless!

As soon as AT&T (or someone) offers a reasonably priced local and LD service plan, I'll be dumping my digital phone service and going back to what has always worked for me...a good old landline!

We live in a "grab it while it's hot" culture but I'm finding that most of the junk that cellular services are pushing, can not perform anywhere near the level that the advertisers and manufacturers promote! I am no better off now with a $700 wireless than I was with the first model I ever purchased. The keypad stops working and you have to replace the entire device. The only thing that can be transferred is your contact list. Forget about your calendar of events and other information that you have saved...it's gone if you don't have a back-up somewhere or a paper copy! For $700, I am bewildered as to why the phone doesn't automatically save anything you input, until you erase it!!! For $700 I bet you I'D save your planner information)!!!

Technology is great and I do enjoy it. But I am learning to hold on to the old paths and "tried and true" methodologies, until such a time that the kinks and bugs in the newfangled stuff is no longer worth complaining or writing about!

For me, landline is the way to go!
  • Keep land line????
I use a fax machine occasionally. We have a home security system that is not hooked up anyway. I am not paying for long distance on my landline and that bill is roughly $45 a month. It is just my husband and I and we would have to switch our cells to unlimited minutes so would that be anymore inexpensive? We currently pay $69.99 for 10000 minutes for the two of us and it makes it about $85 with taxes. Now does Magic Jack have to be plugged into your computer USB all the time and does the computer have to be turned on all the time? We are enjoying AT&T Uverse also, Internet, TV. Any advice appreciated.
  • MagicJack and Cell
MagicJack and a cell is my ticket all the way. No worries about 911 service with magicJack either - once I had set up my E911 configuration in the MagicJack software, I did a 911 call-and-hangup (yeah I know, naughty me) and the police responded to my address in no time flat. (i blamed it on my kids :)

Anyway, at $20 for a full year of unlimited nationwide, MagicJack has my A+ vote for replacing your landline.
  • DSL Direct+MagicJack. No cell
Here's what I ended up doing, and couldn't be happier: dropped my landline, swiched my DSL to DSL Direct (AKA Naked DSK), use MagicJack as a replacement for my local phone. Don't need a cell phone, no headaches.
  • Land line with security system
Looking for a way to drop land line phone while inexpensively maintaining connectivity of my security system with the monitoring station, again without a solution that breaks the bank too.
  • No Cell for Me
For some of us, and I admit few of us, a cell phone is NOT a good fit. I DON'T want bad phone reception. I don't want someone calling me when I'm driving, shopping, or out. I don't want a phone I can lose. I don't want a phone whose numbers are tiny and hard to see. I don't want another mini- electronic gadget. My house alarm system also goes through my phone line.

I pay $30/mo for my landline AND if I dropped my landline, I would not have internet service. A cell phone is NOT what I want.
  • Clearwire has a CONTRACT!!
why does he continue to recommend clearwire? Do they advertise or pay the show to do this? They have a contract here in FL and are bad news...customer service and the service itself is terrible and not reliable.
