May 19, 2009 -- Cheap sports tickets can still be had in the era of $2,500 seats
New York is known for its great expenses, but enough is enough as one of the Big Apple's hometown sports teams recently discovered.
If you've seen a New York Yankees home game on TV, you've probably seen a lot of empty seats in the stands. That's because the Steinbrenners bumped up the price of premium seats at their new stadium.
So how high is too high for the fans of the most valued franchise in pro sports?
Well, first consider that baseball teams play 81 home games during the regular season. So when the Yankees made the best seats in the house $2,500 per game, you're talking about $202,500 for an entire season!
The next level of tickets is $1,250, which equates to $101,250 for the season! After that, you have tickets at $850, $600, $500 and $325. Even with the $325 tickets, you're still looking at $26,325 for the season.
So what are the Yankees doing to try to get these premium seats moving? They're now offering a "buy one, get one" special. Clark still thinks these prices are outrageous...
People have the perception that you can't afford to go to a major league event anymore, that it's priced away from the regular fan. But that's not necessarily true.
During the NBA playoffs, you can find tickets for $5 in some off-markets. In another example, certain baseball teams have $1 seats.
In fact, the Atlanta Braves used to sell "Clark Howard seats." They had an entire section of seats for $1 a pop. Clark would actually sell tickets at the box office for a day every year!
