May 18, 2009 -- Woodchucks rip elderly women on bogus home repairs
RIP-OFF ALERT: Elderly women who live alone are cautioned to be wary of "woodchucks" -- fake home contractors who gain their confidence and then charge huge amounts of money for unnecessary work.
These con men usually have some level of handyman skills and will start the relationship by offering to do a benign job such as gutter cleaning. But after they finish that job, they'll find other imaginary problems -- such as a roof or chimney repair -- and convince seniors to fork over thousands of dollars.
Woodchucks also love to target people who have failing memories. In some of their most disgusting offenses, they'll even drive old women to banks and get them to cash bogus checks before disappearing with the funds.
Police expect the woodchuck phenomenon to worsen. After all, we're an aging population and we no longer live geographically close to our families as we did a few generations ago.
So Clark's challenge for you is to pick up the phone and call your aging relatives -- or go visit them -- to make sure they're not falling prey to woodchucks.
Be nosy if you're worried that their money may be in danger. With a parent, there'll be a natural inclination for them to not want to talk to you about money. But you've got to be pushy.
You don't want to find out that a beloved elder is impoverished at the end of their life because they were charmed, confused and basically robbed.
Unfortunately, Clark won't be able to answer any questions submitted via commenting. If you have a question, please try posting it to our message boards.

WORTH
....if you need a contractor, use a NARI contractor...only 8% of all of them are NARI...look it up on the net, you have a local chapter...do not just get any stray unemployed idiot with a ballcap..and pickup truck.
Builders
I can truthfully say that as a building inspector the majority of builders I meet are honest people who are trying to give people quality work at a fair price. The crooks who we read about in the news are a small minority and are despised by all of us who are affiliated with construction.
My advice would be to ask friends and neighbors for names of builders they have used, ask to see the builder's license and verify it with the licensing agency, check references, get several estimates, require a permit, and use common sense. If an estimate is too low, there is probably a reason for suspicion.

I really wonder who would end up on the short end of the stick with my mother trying to get her money. She squeeze's a dollar so tight that George screams. Beware all of you woodchucks, she might skin you out as new wall paper. And she can be what we call in the south as hard down mean when pissed off. Learned how to shoot a rifle hunting in the hills of Alabama in the 30's and taught oldest granddaughter how to shoot a pistol in her back yard (out in the country). I'll take your bet on how long you will last if you show up at here house with ill intent, That is if the dogs don't get you first. The dog's protect momma, they know where the kitchen is and they love it, they also know who rules the kitchen and wait for their share. If there is such a thing as reincarnations I would hope to comeback as a dog in that kitchen. And I would bite yah quick if you got in that kitchen or hurt momma
Mechainc's
Automotive, Aircraft, Industrial, I've done it. I love the quality of an aircraft mechanic, they work on and then go fly the thing if there is a question about the work,(an unwritten code of ethics)If they are not a pilot then they must fly as a passenger on the test flight, (usually to build flight time). Auto mechanics are another story, so you must educate yourself in the art before you attempt to make repairs yourself, ( I learned the art as a young hot rodder in high school). Now as for Industrial Mechanics the golden rule is that they all are primadonna's they know that they are good at what they do repair large and small thingies, whatucallets, thingabobs, whatisit's, chase electrons, or whatever you can think of. Wonder why my little granddaughter always wants grandpa to fix it. Questions anyone? Remember If you cannot fly an airplane, or don't know how to rebuild the engine in your auto, or know what a volt-ohm meter is then you are are a really limited type of person now aren't you.
