May 12, 2009 -- Best and worst online retailers for customer satisfaction

Customer satisfaction from online shopping is slipping, according to a new tally from ForeSee Results.

But what's interesting is that some e-tailers are still doing a great job despite the overall negative trend. According to the Top 100 Online Retail Satisfaction Index, the business that provides the best online customer experience is NetFlix.com.

Wall Street analysts have long been bearish on NetFlix.com, but we've only had one single complaint about them on the show. They must be doing something right!

Amazon.com comes in as the No. 2 e-tailer. Meanwhile, Avon.com, DoctorsFosterandSmith.com, NewEgg.com and QVC.com are all in a four-way tie further on down the list.

On the flip side, the survey names Efollett, MarketAmerica, Etronics, UrbanOutfitters, ShopNBC, J. Crew and BlueNile, among others, as the worst e-tailers.

Interestingly, BlueNile is a site that Clark has in the past recommended as a place to buy diamonds!

Unfortunately, Clark won't be able to answer any questions submitted via commenting. If you have a question, please try posting it to our message boards.

Hear Ye All of Good Faith and Beware:

Recently I ordered a box set of DVD's through the Amazon website (The Wire - HBO / Complete Series). Instead of receiving the merchandise I ordered from Amazon, it was delivered to me by Amazon's representative "gr8dvdz" which is operated by a person named "Sunny B." The merchandise I received was defective (the DVD's had sound and picture Blips; and they were being played in a brand new DVD player. The DVD's also had adhesive residue on them from the packaging they arrived in; and one DVD was missing from the set. I returned the defective and incomplete merchandise, as requested, to "gr8dvdz / Sunny B."; and I was promised that my refund would be processed post haste. "Sunny B." also promised that he would compensate me for the return shipping costs personally.

I still have not received my refund, Amazon (who denies that "gr8dvdz" is their representative) is dragging their heels in assisting me with this matter and "gr8dvdz aka...Sunny B." has accused me of the following unethical behavior in my latest e-mail communication from him:

"First of all--your must behave yourselves and your manners when you are writing publicly

Secondly--we have sold you one set of DVD and not a car or truck or an airplane

Thirdly--if you buy something from a store and that product is not good and you want to return them--do you charge them for gas money ?

Four--You can write to CEO Mr Jeff or President Mr Obama --but what for-your case is really weak for what we have investigated ?

FIVE- We have checked your DVDs that you sent them-they are all working,in good shape and we believe that you have copied them and sent back to get your refund

and now we are going to fight for your every penny of refund and will prove you that you are a liar, a cheat and a fraud who just preys on genuine sellers"

If Amazon allows other businesses (gr8dvdz / Sunny B.)to distribute merchandise through their website, how can they possibly deny any affiliation with them?

This message will be sent to any website, posting board or forum that I can find to expose this type of behavior on the part of Amazon and "gr8dvdz / Sunny B." All potential buyers of merchandise from Amazon please read and heed this message. If anyone has any advise on how to bring this matter to resolution, I would greatly appreciate it being passed along to me.

    Thank you,

    Eddy A. Smith

P.S. I sent a letter to Jeff Bezos / CEO of Amazon; and it had been opened and sent back to me as "return to sender" mail.

  • New Circuit City Online Retailer
I wanted to add the NEW Circuitcity.com
online only retailer to the list of the worst customer service folks.

Called July 31 on the telephone to order an Xbox 360 package. The price was quite a bargain compared to the stores. Placed the order with their customer service person. Was told that I would receive and e-mail confirmation. Never received the e-mail confirmation. I called several times and each time was told I would receive an e-mail. About 1 day went by, and low and behold got the e-mail and the customer service person put in my numerical portion of my address but not the street. I had to call back again and the other rep had to "intercept" the package, which meant they had to recall the box back to their warehouse. They told me they were sending out another one. I got a new order number from the customer service rep, but still no e-mails. I then called on Monday. Still no e-mail confirmation that the order had shipped.
Was told I would not be charged until the item ships to me. Tuesday I call again to check on the item and they tell me it's on "backorder" which means they ran out of stock. Now I ask the rep how can you run out of stock when my order was placed days ago. Not only did I not get my item, they CHARGED my credit card too. RIP OFF!!!!! I cancelled the order and demanded a refund. I am still waiting for the refund. I was told it would be here by Friday. If not I plan on starting a dispute with my credit card company. I guess legally I have to give them 30 days to issue a credit. So here I sit out my money and no item. Plus you get no customer service at all. All they keep repeating, like a parrot, is I apologize, I apologize. I told them that does not get me my item. The most they would do is give $10 off something else. Wow, $10 off. All because someone in customer service cannot take an address down. Customer No Service. Do Not order from them at any cost! Not worth all the hassle for nothing!
  • Sportsmansguide
Super Etailer and No i don't work for them, but ibuy a lot of stuff
  • etailers
Netflix is great, I've never had any issue with them that hasn't been resolved. Newegg is also a good one - fast service. Same with Amazon. I also have great luck with speed if I order online from Wal-Mart.
  • Etronics
Bought a bluetooth from them and it worked for all of ten days. When I tried to return there were so many requirements it was ridiculus. The cost, and steps required to return was more than it was worth. I WON'T EVER buy from them again. Lesson Learned
  • Drs. Foster Smith
They have great prices on lots of pet supplies. I love their vitamin products for my dogs and I've been happy with the quality of bird feeders they offer. they also have items not available in local pet supply stores. but they do have expensive shipping rates. I buy from them about 5 times a year. But always enough product to make it worth the shipping. I ordered yesterday morning and it shipped in the afternoon!
  • Amazon shipping has really gotten bad
I have been buying from Amazon for 10 years. Since they begin their new "Elite" service (Amazon Prime) whereby you pay $69 per year to have your items shipped in 2 days, those of us who refuse to subscribe have to wait 2-3 weeks to receive our items. I used to regularly receive my items within 5-7 days. Now they usually don't even ship for 7-10 days. I have begun buying from NewEgg, TigerDirect, Buy.com, and PCConnection so that I don't have to wait forever to receive my items. I still buy books occasionally, but I'll even go to bamm.com if it looks like it will take too long to get what I need. I have really lost confidence in Amazon. Lastly, they have outsourced their customer service to India and while I find them incredibly polite and helpful, I still hate to send my money overseas.
  • Best/worst online retailers..
Rule of thumb... stay away from any etailer whose name includes 'America' as the second word in its name.
  • glad to know
I have been shopping with Amazon for a long time. Very happy with them and glad to know that they are on the top of the list.
  • Zappos is Best
Zappos is by far the best website on the internet. I have ordered and returned clothes and shoes numerous times and have never had a problem. Depending on where you live, if you get your order in to them by 1 p.m., you will probably get your order the next day.
  • Drs. Foster & Smith
I totally agree about Drs. Foster and Smith. While they have wonderful products, their shipping fees are outrageous.

I was placing an order for a $3.99 bottle of catnip and when I went to check out, they were going to charge me a whopping $9.99! OK so I'm supposed to pay $10 to ship something that's only $4?? Please!

So I said, 'forget that', and took my name off their mailing list. Drs. Foster & Smith, if you want to stop alienating your customers, then stop charging ridiculous shipping fees!
  • Amazon
I purchased a lot of books from Amazon, but kept getting duplicate books! Weeks/months after I purchased a book, lo and behold another one would appear. I returned 2 such books and was refunded $2.09 due to restocking fees and shipping and handling. Now I purchase books from ebay or Alibris. No more Amazon for me!
  • EXCELLENT ON-LINE SERVICE
Absolutely agree with #1 and #2 for Netflix and Amazon, respectively. Netflix in particular, demonstrate a level of commitment to customer satisfaction reminiscent of other companies 20 years ago, and hard to find now-a-days.

Too bad the complete list is apparently "secret".
  • TaylorGifts and its affiliates
Imagine purchasing 3 items. The first arrives in the wrong size and they eventually ship the correct one. The second arrives and it's the lower-end model (not the one I bought) and I had to ship it back before I would receive the one I actually ordered (still waiting to receive it). The third item is on backorder (still waiting to receive it). So that's 3 transactions in the same month, all of which had something wrong with them. Steer clear of TaylorGifts, Get Organized and their other e-tailer affiliates!! 3 Strikes in a row = out for good!
  • Amazon.com
Generally, they are great! I had one situation when I bought a printer...they couldn't ship it (back ordered)so I called next day to cancel it and they told me it was shipping next day...and I couldn't cancel it because the order went to the vendor warehouse already. So I had to refuse the shipment and write to the credit card company to dispute it. Other than that, I have used them dozens of times with no problems.
  • Blue Nile was Great for Us!
After doing TONS of research about diamonds, I ended up buying an engagement ring from BlueNile 3 years ago and the service I received was excellent! Maybe things have changed? The person on the phone was knowledgeable and helpful and there wasn't any pressure at all. They resized the ring for free since it was slightly larger than my fiancee's finger. We then got the ring appraised at 2 different local merchant and they both appraised the ring for more than $3k higher than what we paid. And my wife loves that ring to this day. Don't know why Blue Nile has gone down hill. They're still good in my book.
  • Overstock.com stinks!
Beware that most electronic and some other products are refurbished/not new items. They charge re-stocking charge on returns! Just be sure to read the fine print.
  • Good and not so good
Zappos is great...stuff arrives FAST! Love Amazon...never a problem (dozens of orders). I love Buy.com prices and selection, but return policy is terrible...make sure you won't need to return it! I also love cafepress.com but shipping can take FOREVER.
  • Zappos
Zappos is amazing! Free shipping for delivery and returns, typically 1 to 2 day delivery, every size/width shoe/boot imaginable, and ridiculously friendly customer service! You just don't get service like this anymore!
  • Amazon
Have dealt with them on numerous occasions, and have returned some things, never have had a problem with them. They have always been up front and on top for reliability!
  • Amazon
Amazon may rate well for some, but I do not recommend it. I bought a blackberry from them some time ago and instead of charging me for the *one* I bought, they charged me for *30*! Then, it took them nearly two months to get the mistake reversed with my credit card company, and it just so happened it was over Christmas so I was unable to charge anything else over the holiday period. All the while, Amazon's top executives didn't seem to care about the "little mishap."
  • J.Crew
Tried to buy wide-calf boots online from JCrew. The website didn't give measurements, and the boots were anything but wide-calf. Not as advertised! They could take a lesson from Zappos.
  • Zappos should be number one!
I wear a 10 1/2 sized shoe, and need wider-calf boots. A trip to the store to buy shoes or boots usually ended in frustration and no purchase. Zappos is my savior! They have everything - wonderful selection, customer reviews, fast delivery, and no hassle returns. And no, I don't work there, but I'd be proud to say I did!
  • Buy- Google
I have had great experiences with Buy.com using Google checkout.
I buy most of my electronics there.
  • Staples
I have been very hapy with NewEgg and Staples.
  • Oh Clarke...
"Interestingly, BlueNile is a site that Clark has in the past recommended as a place to buy diamonds!"

Maybe that's because he's never TRIED IT! Anyone else notice a theme of recommended things that turn up to be absolute pathetic trash? Just because your blogger buddies mention it, you don't have to latch on and sing praises the next day, Clark.
  • Blue Nile
Well maybe I've been lucky, but I've ordered probably close to a dozen pieces of jewelry from blue nile over the past 8 years and have been nothing but pleased by the quality of their products. My wife feels the same. I've spoken with them on the phone twice I think and they've been very nice and helpful.
