May 05, 2009 -- Cheap generic drugs available from many retailers

Looking for an easy way to save a fortune on your prescription drugs? Clark's got it for you!

Did you know that 1 in 3 prescriptions sits unfilled? People will go to their doctor, get the script and even drop it off at the pharmacy. But when they're told what the final cost will be, they let it just sit. Meanwhile, your condition can get worse, especially if you have a chronic illness.

Last year, the consumer champ's allergist wrote him a prescription for a sinus infection that contained 10 pills at a total cost of $110. That was $11/pill!

When he saw his allergist again, he asked her about the expensive script. She explained that doctors have no idea what medications actually cost.

So what can you do to protect yourself from the high costs of medication? Retailers like Wal-Mart, Target and others offer a wide-range of generic drugs for $4 per month or $10 for a 3-month supply.

Print out their listings of cheap generic drugs (or grab a brochure at the store) and bring it with you to your next doctor's visit. Clark's cheap prescription plan guide offers links to all the major retailers' plans.

Now, there may be a good reason why a $4 prescription won't work for you. But if it will, why spend more?

Yes, what a great idea. Instead of your doctor choosing a medication based on your symptoms, let him choose it based on WalMart's list. That should really help in taking the most beneficial medication for your illness.
  • $4 generics
NEVER go the pharmacy ASSUMING your med. is on their $4 plan. That's where they get you. Medtipster.com website tells you what local pharmacy to find your med. for $4. Best of all is that they sell nothing on the site. They also have a free Rx program going on now for Michigan residents. Not sure about the other 49 states.
  • consider discount prescription drug cards
consider discount prescription drug cards for drugs not covered by the Walmart and Target drug lists. You can get from 10% to 40% discount on many drugs not covered by those lists. You can get discount prescription drug cards at the site www.takerx.com/discount.html
The site www.takerx.com also has a list of patient and prescription assistance programs.
  • veterinary meds
An addition to my post about Canadian drugs - my vet suggested Dasuquin for my arthritic cat but it was very expensive through her. I checked with Canadian pharmacies and got it much more cheaply - and, BTW, it works great!
  • Canadian meds
I am a retired RN and have been getting meds from Canada for years. I have gotten meds from probably 6 different pharmacies there after price comparisons. I have never had any problem with them even though some are made in other countries. My doctor also ordered one med for me at double the strength so I could break it in half. And, by the way, the Medicare D is a ripoff. You are forced to buy it or pay a penalty for every month you don't have it if you want it later, so I checked for the cheapest one here in NC and got a plan for $15/month. I have never used it because even Med. D can't match Canada. I have also heard of people getting their meds from N. Zealand.
  • The Rite Aid in town will NOT matchthe price and get very rude when you ask for it. I took all our rx to Kroger and willnever use Rite Aid again.
  • Prescription Drugs
I am a pharmacist and some doctors are becoming aware of the Walmart and Kroger lists and try to prescribe drugs on the list. Rite Aid matches all drug prices. KMart, Costco and Target have lists as well.
  • Costco....!!!
Don't forget to check Costco! Its store brand are the lowest from what I know.
  • Generics
I've gotten generics for years now. They are great. Why help pay for some companies fancy ad campaign? I get the $4 and $10 prescriptions at Target. What a great deal!
